  • On April 1st, Universal Waste's 10 year county contract ended in the Santa Monica Mountains (they still service within the city of Malibu), but communities like Topanga, Monte Nido, Cornell, etc are now being serviced (again, 10 years later) by WM/GI Industries. On their first Wednesday, I headed up to Topanga and the surrounding areas to see what trucks were running. I knew it was going to be interesting considering that they only have about 10 mini trucks in service and nearly half of UWS's old routes require small trucks. It was clear that since this was one of the first days of GI in the mountains, they were still sorting out route/truck info, therefore a lot of their spares were being used.
0:00 - 101512: A Mack MR mid-size Amrep Octo running a greenwaste route in Fernwood, Topanga. I have never seen an MR Amrep collect greens, so that was pretty cool to see. The very friendly driver and I also recognized each other almost immediately since Aaron and I have filmed him before. As you can see 512 had a MAJOR oil leak problem, hence the clouds of blue smoke when he downshifts. In my opinion this truck and 511 were perfect for their routes in the mountains since they were large enough to pack more than UWS's crusty mini Rapid Rails, but small enough to fit down dead-ends and turn around up private driveways.
4:31 - 314 - 1 of 2 Mack LEU Amreps GI bought from UWS last week. Funny enough, Tony and I saw one last Thursday running for UWS and the next day it was already at GI having the logos scraped off.
8:00 - 105613 - GI's new Pete 520 Amrep that I believe has not been seen in action yet! I found it on it's last stop on Mulholland Hwy collecting recycling before he went to go dump. Probably wouldn't have wanted to get more footage anyway since it was very slow.
8:49 - 101293 - One of GI's infamous Midliner Mini Amreps. I found this crew collecting "commercial" recycling in Topanga which is why they are dumping WM bins. They kept these few stops after UWS took over since they were not considered residential. Very friendly guys and a very cool truck.
11:55 - 101511 - Another Mack MR mid-size Amrep finishing up its greenwaste route in Monte Nido. Didn't rev as hard as I wanted but it was a cool driver and pretty neat to see a second spare MR working residential in the new contract.
13:54 - 105563 - A "Mini Mini" Amrep HX-450 doing greens on the small roads above Old Topanga.
Thanks to all the friendly drivers who worked hard to ensure everything was collected on their first Wednesday in the Santa Monica Mountains!

What a cool video! The first clip was really something haha. The MRs were definitely my favorite, they’re just so unique especially for WM and I always appreciate a good sounding MR. I can’t wait to see the UWS trucks in WM colors! The scenery was pretty awesome as well, definitely seems to be a cool area. Great work!

Thanks! It sure was lol. They are pretty unique for WM in terms of ASLs over here, but they seem to be more popular over on the east coast. It was a very neat area to film in.

Wow G.I. has been evolving lately! First this and second is the purchase of Anderson Rubbish! 101512 was great, thats a serious oil leak problem, thankfully its LNG or else you would’ve been breathing in diesel for the majority you were there lol. I cannot wait until they respray UWS 314, I really want to see how that turns out. That 520 ASL looks great also, pretty cool to see dual axle for a change haha. The Mack Midliner probably is one of my favorite trucks G.I. has mini Amrep they’ve purchased, it’s just such a unique combo. It was nice seeing the mini “mini” Peterbilt again. Awesome post bro, keep it up!

Thanks man! Yeah but honestly I'd rather breathe in diesel than burning oil lol. I will be sure to film it once they do! The Mack Midliners they have are some of my favorite as well! Be sure to keep a look out for a full video of one in the future. Appreciate the kind words again!

Dang that first clip tho. Can't wait to see the LEU repainted! Funny that the Midliner driver used his hand to push the pedal to rev. Nice compilation!

Awesome compilation bro! Great to see what they're using out there. Practically all of GI's coolest trucks all in one area! Way to start out the video with the best in my opinion...
I was so excited when i found out 101512 was being used out there! And can't believe they put Arnulfo behind the wheel, that just makes it even cooler that he's back in 512 again. I've been trying to catch him in that truck for almost a year now so that's awesome how he's in it regularly once again. Really got the best of everything when you filmed 512 - fast driver, lid flipping, and old UWS carts haha. I could tell at 0:52 he was pretty happy/surprised to see you there LOL. Oh and can't forget about its smoking problem... I heard it was puffing clouds of smoke for like 2 years now but I had no idea it was as bad as in the first clip! But glad they're keeping it up and running on a real route now. Idk if you knew the story behind these MR ASLs but they were bought specifically for Topanga lol so I'm glad to see them in their natural habitat once again.
Glad you saw 314 up there! Mike texted me around midnight the day we went out there telling me about those and I couldn't sleep cause I was so excited to see them haha. Can't believe they actually bought those off UWS. It's like a dream come true for me being such a huge Mack fan! Damn 1015613 already lost a lug nut cover :( Didn't think they were gonna send that out there so that's really cool! Always good to see a Mouse on route. Crazy they have it working commercial recycling lol. I really want to find the sister unit to that truck. They just revived it from the dead and it sounds really good! Wow didn't think they were going to move Jorge out there - cool to see him running 511 pretty well. Fast arm so that kept things entertaining. Great to see a Rat out there too. Thought it would just be the UWS trucks out there.
Terrific work on this one! Really wish I could have made it out there to see WM on their first days out here, definitely looks like a lot of fun. Can't wait to head out there myself in the near future. Great video!!!!

Always appreciate a nice lengthy comment! Yeah 512 was definitely a cool truck and Arnulfo was super friendly. I was surprised so see that much oil being burned especially on an LNG, but I guess its just showing its age. That is so cool they bought the MRs specifically for Topanga back in the day.... I never knew that but now it makes a lot of sense! Its going to be so cool once they repaint all the trucks they've acquired over the past few weeks. Really glad you enjoyed all the trucks I filmed... GI never disappoints!

Enjoyed all the trucks in this one! Wow the firdt truck featured was smoking good lol. Do they plan on replacing all those UWS carts still? I thought UWS would want them back for their warehouse or for recycling. Super unique to see a truck in UWS color scheme with WM on it haha.

Awesome awesome Video Eli ! Loved 512, Dang That first clip was crazy ! 512 smoking hard. Cool to see the driver flipping lids too ! That LEU is gonna look great in G.I colors ! Cool to see it running down there sounds really nice ! Cool to see a G.I 520 too. Loved that old Mack mini Amrep ASl ! Cool he actually flipped lids with it and pushed down the gas with his hand to rev it. How many homes did that get in the Contract ? Cause I wonder how many trucks will run down there. Nice to see 511 like the sound of that truck. Actually liked the Pete 320 mini Amrep looks good in G.I colors , sucks the arm slows down when he brings the cart down so it won’t flip the lid. Awesome video Eli definitely a favorite !

Thank you! 512 is my favorite as well. They run 9 trucks up there on Wednesdays, which is their heaviest day. Glad you liked it

For those of who are wondering why 512 was smoking so much. It would’ve been doing a diesel particulate filter burn.

  • @zp12684

Wow 512 smokes A LOT! I'm really surprised they let it run like that. Are the old UWS guys riding along with the Waste Management guys? I'm glad you found 101293.That has to be my favorite truck in GI since its so unique. With the commercial recycling stops, do they have the option of dumpsters or is a truck to large to fit? I really enjoyed this video!

Nate garbage trucks and lawn care The county approved the contract on January 31st which didn't allow enough time for any of the haulers who won contracts to get new equipment in time. So WM and Athens bought the carts off the previous hauler and Ware asked Burrtec to work through April instead of having them take over.
