Bro i totally agree with you and i believe that you gave a valad point and recommendation that i intend to use in the future and present when dealing with Artist. Offer a recoupment for the money they spent for the beat. And then after they recoup back from the beat we start the splits. I think that is a great idea to add in a beat lease agreement. Thanks Pain 1. Sometimes we all can find Common ground in this world of Music Business especially for independent Producers and Artist relationship that hopefully can blossom. i would love to collab with you someday. I like your body of work.
I think producers deserve %50 if not more. I went to a Drake concert and watched him jump around the stage for a couple of hours & if it wasn’t for the beats he wouldn’t be able to even tour.
I’m so surprised Ruslan had that take, especially for his tenure in the music industry. Anyway, seems like artists are always willing to cut corners for the very thing that makes them an artist in the first place- the beat.

I can’t wait to get into this stuff. I don’t need the money, so if I spend a day on beat and I’m selling creativity with no rights, I’m asking for bank. I’m assuming most artists won’t actually have that amount of money to invest in a beat, so it’s splits all day $500 for a beat…that’s what I spend on replacement parts for my gear
This answered 80% of my questions and how to negotiate for royalties too and the reason why. And I understand a little bit how these royalties work now. Thanks🔥
I think the main reason why producers have reached this low point is misinformation. I mean, there are so many "music gurus", fake experts giving so much wrong information that young producers just don't know how to value their work. And the truth is that no one knows how to value properly the production work in this business. There is no standard reference for prices. Can't blame nobody for selling cheap just because they don't have the necessary information..It's just my opinion ✌️

This is a bit embarrassing. I commented on your community post where I mentioned "publishing" instead of "composition." Now, I know better, thanks to this video! This is something I should rewatch from time to time.
Thank you for sharing this video. I really appreciate the insight and detailed explanations. If only there were more big name producers in the industry like yourself that were willing to vocally advocate these points so it is more widely known to prevent unscrupulous labels, managers, and artists from deliberately pushing false narrative and lies to cheat unknown producers and beatmakers from receiving the fair share they are entitled to... Labels always recover their expenses before they begin paying royalties to the artists so artists can certainly do the same. It just seems like they are unwilling to give up any benefits to the producers or beatmakers.
I love everything you have said boss, the only challenge I have is, over here 🇳🇬 You would pay huge sums for production and still do your music promotion alone which the song may or may not blow up Once the song blows up, same producer you paid hugely, would pop up out of no where for royalties so where is the justice for us up-and-coming artists When it's not every producer that would want a Recouped bargain

Me and some other producers here make a kinda work similar to your, helping people in this music industry, it's not easy but it worth the struggle! Best vibes Bro and keep it going, grind dont stop!!
I personally believe we need to seat down as Producer and events and knowledge workshops were were Producers like you can raise up such issues and deal with them
Bottom line is in this free market everyone gets what they deserve, and the deserve what they get... Always put great value on yourself, but don't expect others to always see that value.
Producers does marketing too, wenhave to pay for loops, vst subscriptions, Beatstars subscription. Recupments should only be paid when an advance is paid by the artist or label, not when they lease a beat
Thank you ☝️ see a lot of comments on pains vids from artists saying “i have to pay to market, promote, do this that blah blah, then producers wants more money? He didnt help with any of it!” Bro if thats the case, where was your ass when I was making the fire track that got you inspired to bring pen to paper? Where were you when I was spending thousands on vsts and gear while im broke 😂
2 1/2 Questions: As someone that has a relatively high volume of sales, on a consistent basis, how do you keep track of all those recoupments? And, how do you arrange them when dealing with various distributors who may or may not offer splits, let alone recoupments? What section(s) of the BeatStars lease agreement would need to be amended in order for such terms to apply as a contractual obligation?
Honestly if anyone deserves 50% it's the producer we create the whole vibe and foundation of the song all the rapper does is add lyrics no one dances or zones out to acapellas and then a record label proceeds to make the majority of the money off of somethin they didn't create in many cases just to market and sell it time for a change fuck them labels
Wow you are such a valuable source of learning for me right now thank you so much. May I sound really newbie and ask what a point is please? How do you get PRO's? May I request you do a video on music business terminology for beat makers perhaps with a text download?
Thank you for this, I’ve been making making beats for years and was just thinking about sending some beats out to some artists I really like. I’m from the Bay Area but am hesitant that if someone likes one of my beats and wants to purchase it how to go about it. It would be dope if they sent me a contract or something to review it with someone like you so I understood the verbiage and everything I was getting or not getting but I’ll keep watching or rewatch these videos to game myself up. Thanks bro
I think recoup should end at producer price then everyone at zero. It gets complicated when artist might claim unrealistic figure for marketing. Their marketing input should be equal to producers marketing and years of study and investment. Could be simplified at a 15-30% cap for the producer, just to allow them headroom.
A lot of these rappers too trash for me to even consider selling them my beats. Let alone give them more royalties than me. Money not a factor to me. When money is your God then of course the money come first. You’ll sell your music to people who don’t deserve it. I’m looking for TALENT to make GREAT music that will make an impact. That’s harder than selling a beat. When I meet the artist who can do something I can’t do and vice versa then that’s a relationship worth forging
I do after 1 year of learning to mix 💯 agree that y'all deserve to get paid. What I see missing are options, not enough. For instance if a musician believes that their vocal on the best is a hit than a producer is like that's nice, but they got no hits so ya sell that exclusive to a bomb beat you may never get paid if it's whack. So I understand exclusives costing 2k and up to 10k but on the flip side why not offer something that makes the musician work just as hard and so Incitivize with a sales gimmick that protects you as a producer. Offer 100% Fully refundable on exclusives if the return hits double the investment so producer gets their money, if it's a hit than both you all still get paid, however the artist/musician feels confident enough than thier investment is 100 on them to put into the work to make it a hit. Which is something as an artist would not be mitch bade about. So I hear what you say on the recoop, but maybe sell it like. No future in fronts lol. Pay the standaed fee right now.
Thank you I'm learning lot from you. Sharing these information videos with my music producing family. 5he other thing to note is that, having this mentality and approach to royalities (the initial negative propositiin) may eventually encourage the larger labels to take even more advantages, playing on this kind of reckless ignorance with misunderstanding intellectual property rights. Don't buyers see this eventual dichotomy? Would they except the same from labels buying their music? Doubt it What do you think?
Hey man. First off, I love your videos, as a producer just starting out, I’m learning so much from you so thanks for that 😁 So I was reading down through the standard automatic Beatstars license and I noticed this section: “Subject to the Licensee’s compliance with the terms and conditions of this Agreement, Licensee shall not be required to account or pay to Producer any royalties, fees, or monies paid to or collected by the Licensee (expressly excluding mechanical royalties), or which would otherwise be payable to Producer in connection with the use/exploitation of the New Song as set forth in this Agreement.” Forgive me if I’ve missed something but does that mean if I were to just use their license template I’d be giving up my claim to a master split? If so, I’ve got a few questions. Is that standard for leases? As in, are you referring in this video specifically to exclusive licenses and placements? And if not, should I be looking at creating my own license agreement? I downloaded a template a few years ago off a producer who I shall not name’s website which I seem to have misplaced and it now looks like they’ve since changed it so you have to pay for their template but I seem to remember seeing that it included a split for both. Sorry for waffling and thanks for taking the time to read. P.s I got your pack Drums That Hit and it’s dope, the vinyl fills bonus was a nice touch. Peace. Wyrmhole.
Yeah, the default doesn’t give master royalties to the producer, but it does give producers master ownership. That part can be confusing. You can change that agreement to include a royalty percentage on the master side. In my experience, many artists just ask what we want if they’re willing to give a split in general. Recoupment is often more complicated than artists and producers are willing to figure out.
@@DJPain1 Thanks man, appreciate it! In terms of recoupment, can that work in the opposite way? For example, say a basic license is 30 and an unlimited license is 200. If an artist were to buy a basic license and it blew up way past the terms in the license agreement, could you as a producer recoup to make up the extra 170 ?

Well, it sounds like we need to get a little creative and come up with a 'rap-port' system! We can keep track of all the dough they're making with our beats, and then hit them up for our fair share. We'll call it the 'beat-keeping' system
@@iamdaledz Shit I work in tech as a UX designer, I'm wondering if this is possible if I sat down with some software engineers and did some more research together. I would be happy to come up with some mock ups of what that software could look like
Love this video. I have a follow up question. I want to think I know the answer, but maybe I don't. When a producer takes a known song that already has chords, lyrics, melody, etc and does a Remix, makes a new version w a different beat, but based on the oroginal vocals, chords and melody, is it the same splits as an original produced beat? Thanks! 👑
Haha, I love it! DJPain 1 definitely knows how to whip those beats into shape and take them to the next level, just like Coach Doucette does with his athletes! 🎵🏋️♂️
I really appreciate you making this video, I am relatively new to all of this and am trying to inform myself on how to do business properly when it comes to selling beats I've made. I am learning it can be pretty confusing and difficult to get something I've sampled cleared with the proper people and companies. I am hoping to get more information on whether the loops and one shots from sites like splice and even bandlab are as cut and dry to use (do they need to be cleared with splice or the producers they work with if they're used in a beat I make?) or are they actually just using language that makes it appear that the loops are there and free for the taking, you don't have to clear anything and you can even use it with no change to the loop (transposing the loop, speeding up or slowing down the bpm, adding effects or filters, etc) I don't if this is a dumb question or not but I think it would be even more ignorant to not know and still not bother to ask the question....thanks for the free game man, I definitely didn't know about this side of getting music out there 💯💯
So i have this burning question: How can I keep track of what an artist that either stole my beat or someone who leased it is doing with it so I know that the one who stole it is not monetizing from it and that the one who actually bought it with a contract is following that contract? is there like an automated system that helps me do that or is it a more manual process of steps that I have to take in order from me knowing that someone is exploiting financially it withought me the original creator benefiting from it? I've been producing for almost 14 years now have sold beats exclusively to local artists I know and online but haven't got into the beat licensing, leasing stuff and even tho I have released a couple beats online here and there for public showcase I want to really grasp how this shit really works in 2023 so I can get serious about it.
I'm new to this but I have been producing beats for years, just haven't released anything yet. I was thinking of putting it on beatstars but I never understood the royalty system. I just thought once you dell a beat its theirs and we don't see the backend of the royalties come through...which is why I was considering sync licencing. But if you are saying that for each beat sale we make on beatstars we can get royalties, how do we set that system up? Sorry I'm really new to music biz. Love bro!
Looks like you're in for a real treat! Just make sure to grab some popcorn and get ready for a wild ride. Trust us, the thumbnail doesn't do it justice 😉
hey bro, thank you so much for the info. I was just wondering about how to go about the recoupment process. How do you ensure that the artist after they buy your beat will pay you in your share of the master royalties? If there a way on beat stars or otherwise to legally lock it in/discuss it?
Nope, even with contracts, it’s the honor system. There are ways to register some royalties to yourself, eg registering them with a pro or pub admin, but it’s best to have cooperation with the artist/label releasing the music

Thanks! 👑
DJPain 1 is the Coach Greg Doucette of the producer world 😆
Haha, I love it!
I am hoping to get more information on whether the loops and one shots from sites like splice and even bandlab are as cut and dry to use (do they need to be cleared with splice or the producers they work with if they're used in a beat I make?) or are they actually just using language that makes it appear that the loops are there and free for the taking, you don't have to clear anything and you can even use it with no change to the loop (transposing the loop, speeding up or slowing down the bpm, adding effects or filters, etc) I don't if this is a dumb question or not but I think it would be even more ignorant to not know and still not bother to ask the question....thanks for the free game man, I definitely didn't know about this side of getting music out there 💯💯
Where can I find more business related videos like this Dj Pain

So i have this burning question:
How can I keep track of what an artist that either stole my beat or someone who leased it is doing with it so I know that the one who stole it is not monetizing from it and that the one who actually bought it with a contract is following that contract? is there like an automated system that helps me do that or is it a more manual process of steps that I have to take in order from me knowing that someone is exploiting financially it withought me the original creator benefiting from it? I've been producing for almost 14 years now have sold beats exclusively to local artists I know and online but haven't got into the beat licensing, leasing stuff and even tho I have released a couple beats online here and there for public showcase I want to really grasp how this shit really works in 2023 so I can get serious about it.
I want to sell more beats but tbh bro, this why 97% my beats are on a hard drive, artist be annoying af sometimes
Love bro!
Peace. Good video, thanks! The instagram link to the chart is broken. Can we get that Master / Composition chart somewhere? ✊🙏

How do you copyright beats ? Do you need a melody to do that ? Or can you copyright a drum beat these days ?
About to watch this later because of the thumbnail 😂
@@DJPain1 Damn, that's tough for us. At least producers are starting to get more recognition in the industry compared to before. Thanks again
can you please re-upload the chart? the link doesnt work anymore. thanks
