For those who are unaware. The "cat" that claimed Ellen's old body with Viola's soul in it was Ellen's familiar and a demon she had made a pact with. So the demon claimed Viola's soul while Ellen claimed Viola's body. No happy ending for Viola, not even in death.

@Kredex she had purple hair, hollow bleeding eyes, was leaving a blood trail, a deadly illness that caused the skin to be covered in rashes, and was chasing viola while speaking through pained groans. of course she seemed like a monster
So I'm guessing the 'wait 1 hour ending' is basically the witch waiting for the legless viola to bleed to death, thus removing all barriers in her way. Morbid.
Way more morbid than that. In the novel, it's stated that witches only die when they give in to despair. Basically, they only die should they wish to. So you're waiting for Viola to endure so much pain for so long that she just plain gives up.

@@mauricioaguilar7227 I sadly doubt that there is no way that Viola will able to switch back, the pact is already been sealed by both consenting party, and Viola's soul is claimed by the cat. There is no way of getting out of that situation for Viola, Ellen already made it hell for her in a gruesome way so Viola won't be able to learn how to switch their bodies back. It is also proven that Viola can actually learn how to use Ellen's magic shown how she manipulated the house to kill Ellen and casted a spell to imprison Ellen to never getting out of her house, Viola is not stupid and Ellen knows that from the beginning that's probably why Ellen gouged her original body eyes out and cut off her legs, and made a deal with her demon cat to claim Viola's soul. Sometimes there are stories with bad endings where the villain defeat the hero. Although karma does exist.
Canonically, everything was fine though. Just a cute witch girl going back inside her magical house to grab some things before heading out to a sleep over at her friend's house. :)
_All those little touches_ . . . The bloody limbs, the frog, the skulls, the noises & handprints, the knight, the kitchen - all those things and more combined with perfect music choices to make this scary & heart-wrenching. And of course that story, with the twist at the end no one expected that ripped your guts out reading it. Interesting, in the original poor Viola didn't end by saying "help". She tried to say "Father" and then "Daddy"... that broke me up completely. Along with Ib, this is tied for number one rpgmaker horror game of all time in my mind. Funny puns ("ribbiting" 3:55), all gruesome deaths, & a great playthrough! Thank you for playing again.
I feel like horror games in general could learn a lot from this game. It's scary, but it has a good pacing, with plenty of calm moments, and a good mix of scares. Sure, it has jump scares, but by far the most terrifying section of the game is going through that dark maze. I haven't played in years, and the memory of that sensation of "oh god, I have to get out of here" is still fresh.
I made it yay! Saw the end and had a thought the witch clearly stabbed out her eyes and cut off her legs. So when the father shot he had to have notice that he was shooting a little girl. She look normal except for no eyes and no legs. She even sounded like she was calling out for help. Like how did I miss this the first time I played this.

2 things: -I was kinda looking forward to the tadpole death and I’m sad Manly forgot about it -It seemed like at the end chase scene they pulled Viola back, didn’t they? I remember her being right up my ass the whole time, unforgiving of a single misstep
21:33 after this death you can go back and read the bloody writing on the wall in response. 21:51 if you keep talking to those tadpoles before you wash the shoes you could encounter another death
isnt that dialogue also hinting that his dad was the frog that the which fed to the hungry thing through the keyhole? sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious but I forget
Ay nice video! Still one of my favorite RPG game, oh boi brings back memories Also about the 1 hour ending : If the roses and stuff disappeared, it's not because Viola (in Ellen's body) is slowly dying because of her physical condition. In the novel, who's basically Ellen's diary, we learn that a witch can't die, unless she fell in despair. So that one hour ending is just Ellen, waiting that Viola loses all hope, and just give up on living anymore. It's more heartbreaking than just bleeding to death, in some ways.
I mean, I'd call a legless, eyeless, sickly monstrosity that's somehow managing to run with its arms and chasing my "daughter" a monster too. Would've been neat if the father somehow had the slightest fleeting feeling he'd done something wrong when shooting Ellen's old body or hearing Viola try to say "father, help me", though.
Other RPGs horror tried to mimic this game success so hard and all have failed. In my opinion The Witch’s House excels with its simplicity. Don’t tell, just show and terrify us ;p
The same could be told about other successes like Yume Nikki and Ib. They all excel in their own way, but then people tried to mimic them and either those mimics were considered fangames or spiritual successors or "based-ons", or they failed hard.
I'll go against the grain and say I like this ending. It makes sense. Ellen doesn't just die because 'horror game' or is taken out by a Dues Ex Machina. Her plan works. And it should. As the game pointed out it's her house, she should know how to navigate it. Old maid said it best, the odds were stacked against Viola from the start. I'll point out that Ellen's goal is not 'world domination' or 'the destruction of humanity'. It's having a parent who loved her. And that's really sad. She gave up her soul for this so she will pay in time.
If you talk a lot with the tadpoles without leaving the room they drown you. "My dad is dead" "He got eaten by a snake" *"YOU KILLED HIM!"* then the floor break and you drown
I still hate Ellen lol that didnt change. Poor viola, thought that monster was her friend until she used her destroyed her body then switched places with her and got her killed. Ugh.
If you read the light novel it shines light on Ellen's horrible pass, it'll make you understand how far she would go to have a loving family and friends that actually cares for her

Ayyyy not very. I personally read the novel and i kinda forgive Ellen for this, she deserved a good ending after all the terrible things she went through tbh
@@LunaPPK aaaa believe me she deserved it. She never was accepted by anyone and i don't mean like "yeah she's 7 so she didnt knew a lot of ppl anyways" She lived for so much years and nobody accepted her. Her dad never accepted she actually existed, her mom left her for almost nothing, all the kids she invited at her witch's house, in the first place wasn't to kill them, but after a kid she thought as a friend saw her sickness and freaked out, she just began to kill childrens to have more power Remember that Ellen is just, before being a witch of a lot of years, a child, who's 7 years old, that knew only sickness and pain, physical and mental. She never had any friends because of her body, and a witch can't leave her mansion. So she didn't had any choice.
I think one of my favorite examples of hard mode would be from this remake. I really love how it takes everything you know and throws it out the window! It changes many puzzles, made enemies much tougher to escape from, more cryptic stuff, and added more story! The final chase scene was also very hard!
I kinda wish there was an ending where the father hears ‘Viola’ talking about what she did and instead shoots ‘Viola’ because he realizes that’s not his daughter and they in fact hurt his daughter maybe he leans down towards the leg less body at the end and realizes that body is going to die and his daughter with it and so he apologizes for not being able to keep her safe

For those who might not have understood the flower puzzle, each statement the red grasses give you is a lie, but you can determine what the lie is based on their wording. The top grass says "either", meaning if it were truthful, one of the options would have to be correct. That means both options are wrong. The opposite is the case with the bottom grass, as it says "both", meaning one of the options is wrong. Since uprooting was mentioned by both top and bottom grasses, plucking is the correct option.

When he wanted the ring back, the statue had bend her fingers, making it impossible to take it back. Then bad things happened. I really love this story. 23:11 Are...
I love how Manly say that everything is fine when cleary bad shit is happening.
Canonically, everything was fine though. Just a cute witch girl going back inside her magical house to grab some things before heading out to a sleep over at her friend's house. :)
@@nyankers Yeah, your right! :D
I guess you could say...
She was *HALF* the girl she used to be

She was *legging* (lagging) behind.
She was really *shot* there
Wait what do you mean that's not a joke
That was *BLOODY* disappointing but I guess you just wanted to take a *STAB* at puns ;))
_All those little touches_
Wow I didn't realize the father-daddy change of word..
Also cut out her tongue.
christenlanger
Totally forgot that.
Alfheim's Aurora Jolteon
I honestly thought she did both but that makes more sense.
@@christenlanger I thought she drank something that burned her throat? My memory's kind of hazy.
@@NoriMori1992 you're right. I'm not sure if I misremembered the tongue cutting but it made sense at the time.
Whaaaat, alreadyyy? Why did I feel like the game was way longer? Lol anywho, super excited for the next part!
That's how I felt. Thought the last one was like 3 or 4 videos long
@@LILKJ111 Maybe the editing is different? Like he may have shown how he got the different endings in more detail, or he just got through the puzzles quicker since it's a remake. It's been a long while since I watched it so not sure 🤔 I'm thinking of giving the original another watch to see how much it changed lol other then visually, I looooove how this remake looks.
The playthrough of the first game is a single 90 minute video involving a clueless Manly.
@@jia9858 ...Yup, Imma watch it again 😂
now I'm tempted, too
-b-but I have a thesis to write D':-
After all these years, the jumpscares are still terrifying
Ah, that true ending still gets to me. It's just such a good twist, I can honestly say it caught me completely off guard when I first saw it.
2 things:
-I was kinda looking forward to the tadpole death and I’m sad Manly forgot about it
-It seemed like at the end chase scene they pulled Viola back, didn’t they? I remember her being right up my ass the whole time, unforgiving of a single misstep
21:33 after this death you can go back and read the bloody writing on the wall in response. 21:51 if you keep talking to those tadpoles before you wash the shoes you could encounter another death
kekapandaOuo if you watch Manly’s playthrough of the original game I believe he triggers it
isnt that dialogue also hinting that his dad was the frog that the which fed to the hungry thing through the keyhole? sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious but I forget
yes
What was the bloody writing on the wall?
Ay nice video! Still one of my favorite RPG game, oh boi brings back memories
Also about the 1 hour ending : If the roses and stuff disappeared, it's not because Viola (in Ellen's body) is slowly dying because of her physical condition. In the novel, who's basically Ellen's diary, we learn that a witch can't die, unless she fell in despair.
So that one hour ending is just Ellen, waiting that Viola loses all hope, and just give up on living anymore.
It's more heartbreaking than just bleeding to death, in some ways.
Let's be real here.
Who calls a legless, bleeding little girl that's struggling to survive a "monster"?
I mean, I'd call a legless, eyeless, sickly monstrosity that's somehow managing to run with its arms and chasing my "daughter" a monster too. Would've been neat if the father somehow had the slightest fleeting feeling he'd done something wrong when shooting Ellen's old body or hearing Viola try to say "father, help me", though.
@@sasdagreat8052 and this was a place where the witch was known to live and presumably looks monstrous

@@Craigthedingledingbat really? whats the name of the legend?
Other RPGs horror tried to mimic this game success so hard and all have failed. In my opinion The Witch’s House excels with its simplicity. Don’t tell, just show and terrify us ;p
The same could be told about other successes like Yume Nikki and Ib. They all excel in their own way, but then people tried to mimic them and either those mimics were considered fangames or spiritual successors or "based-ons", or they failed hard.
Chivi-chivik pretty much but sometimes there are exceptions here and there :3
@@spira-virgo5746 Yeah! Some people manage to make great games based on the greats! :D
Ventus!
True ending? Viola and her father love happily ever after.
There was no depressing twist.
Nope.
Definitely the second person I watched play this and you are literally the the manly man that got me in to this, stay badass manly (lol)
all endings already? damn, you're quick and manly!
"My dad is dead"
"He got eaten by a snake"
*"YOU KILLED HIM!"*
then the floor break and you drown
Someone should make an RPGMaker horror game and call it 'RPGMaker Horror Game.'
And then add the generation of RMMaker at the end of the title, like VX Ace or 2003
lol reminds me of my idea. an action movie titled "every action movie ever made"
17:40
"I've got a BONE to pick with you come back I got puns!!"
IM CRYING-
I still hate Ellen lol that didnt change. Poor viola, thought that monster was her friend until she used her destroyed her body then switched places with her and got her killed. Ugh.

We're all heartbroken (again!) by the true ending! RIP Viola. :-(

After those years... here it is again. the ending that cause me to hate many twisted endings. Even now, the real Viola will never have true peace.
Still a downer ending, huh?
I know they all can’t be good endings, but this one just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I had hoped that she’d receive some repercussions for what she did, but sadly, that is not the case.
Ayyyy not very. I personally read the novel and i kinda forgive Ellen for this, she deserved a good ending after all the terrible things she went through tbh
@@SorakanaChan at the cost of stealing a girls body and having her killed yeah nah bud
@@LunaPPK aaaa believe me she deserved it.
She never was accepted by anyone and i don't mean like "yeah she's 7 so she didnt knew a lot of ppl anyways"
She lived for so much years and nobody accepted her. Her dad never accepted she actually existed, her mom left her for almost nothing, all the kids she invited at her witch's house, in the first place wasn't to kill them, but after a kid she thought as a friend saw her sickness and freaked out, she just began to kill childrens to have more power
Remember that Ellen is just, before being a witch of a lot of years, a child, who's 7 years old, that knew only sickness and pain, physical and mental.

JESUS CHRIST. I forgot how depressing the ending was.
I guess i wont sleep for the next 37 minutes lmao
Never doubt the holy purifying power of firearms, though perhaps one should make sure to choose the right targets
I kinda wish there was an ending where the father hears ‘Viola’ talking about what she did and instead shoots ‘Viola’ because he realizes that’s not his daughter and they in fact hurt his daughter maybe he leans down towards the leg less body at the end and realizes that body is going to die and his daughter with it and so he apologizes for not being able to keep her safe
damn ending already, I thought this was longer than I remembered
Poor Viola. My heart broke when the truth came out. She didn't deserve any of this.
It's been so many years and that ending still makes me want to cry. I really enjoyed the playthrough for this remaster. The original version was the first time I actually came across your channel for spooks when I was in middle school. After that, I kept watching all of your playthroughs up until now. Thank you for bringing out such great content, Manly!
5:19 now I understand. It's king of *spoiler* but, since Viola is actually Ellen who exchanged body, she used her magic to protect herself from Viola.
i wish they did a secret ending where we can give viola body back
There should be a sequel that continues the true ending and Viola gets her revenge on Ellen.
impossible for viola
It would be impossible, the cat is a demon and Ellen's familiar, so when Viola dies, he appears to claim her soul while Ellen claimed her body
Remember everyone there is still the hard mode to go 😈
So no matter what, there's no good ending? 😭😭
yea, i saw someone on the comments saying even if Ellen(Viola) caught Viola(Ellen), the spell to replace the body need trust from both perspectives so... yea

i love the revamped graphics a lot. i own both misao: definitive edition and mad father on steam, so hearing about witch's house coming out on steam made me think it would be a re-release in that fashion. i'm glad i was wrong, the spriting is gorgeous and i'm happy to learn there's a new mode. i know misao had a new look to it, but i still felt witch's house did it the best
Am I the only person who thinks Manly's voice could be great for and anime villain? Especially when he chuckles.
I love how when manly left the room again after the statue broke she upper torso moved and he didnt notice
That or he didnt say anything
This is definitely one of the best games, and one of the best stories. Everything about it is near flawless.
This is a masterpiece... I wish more games were like it.
Getting spoiled by Manly (uwu)
i guess thats the power of storytelling, where the story sticks to your mind that many years later, that familiar heart wrenching pain still haunts you.
Ah yes, my favorite ending in the game... *"Game Over"*
26:40 Run!
*insert bgm: run*
A deep hole with no visible bottom.... like my soul....
Now I really wanna go play the game just to ensure "Viola" stays trapped in the house even if it means literally just standing there or dying (I know it isn't programmed to change anything even if I do but I don't care, I want her to be trapped)
Bro why is she so... *bouncy*
What about the ending where u didn't talk to the cat at all? It's not an ending but you'll get additional dialogues if I'm not mistaken

Wasn't there like... A lot more lore around the house? I remember the lore about the black cat, also somewhere there was something about the switching bodies method and some other stuff iirc. Did you skip it intentionally or was it removed from the game or maybe placed on the hard mode version?
CrisSrn02 it’s the no save run that gives you the secret ending about the cat, it requires you finding all the diaries and not saving though we don’t know if that’s still implemented or if it’s part of hard mode now
ScarletDevilCirno Thanks for the answer. My memory is not that good, but I remembered the lore in general terms. I didn't remember it being part of the no save run for some reason.

5:08 The head of the statue moved.
Also, this statue makes me think of a French short "horror" story called "La Venus d'Ille" from Mérimée, about a cursed statue of a woman. A guy put his engagement ring on it because it was bothering him to play a sort of tennis game with it. When he wanted the ring back, the statue had bend her fingers, making it impossible to take it back. Then bad things happened. I really love this story.

I really wish they would create a good ending where she was able to get back her body via you playing as the witch's body and trying to catch your own body on the end and somewhat the cat helping you to get it back
