1:20:45 Actually, you aren't locked into a bad ending route if you fail the doll room. There's something called the "Doom counter", and failing the doll room adds +2 points. You need 3 or more for things to go sour in the toy box, so you are safe if you don't add to the doom counter before or after the doll room.

Seeing you play this game made me remember why I love Horror. I watch your videos because of the way you handle horror. You don't freak out as badly as the others, and it's soothing. When I saw that you were playing this game, I freaked out. I was like... six when the original came out? I remember watching people play it on my Grandpa's Ipad. The OG introduced me to Horror, and it made me the person I am today. You playing the remake felt like you were a tour guide, guiding me through my childhood memories, so thank you, ManlyBadassHero. Even in the original game, I always liked Garry and found him an enjoyable character.
The way he does his best, despite his fears and worries, but doesn't hide it behind a strong facade... It's rare to see that in a character. He does what he can to keep Ib safe in such a weird world that neither of them expected to find themselves in.
He fell into the role of a guardian so quick, and he fills that role so well. Plus I like how he isn't offended when Ib asks him why he "talks like a lady" and is just outright honest with her about why he acts and behaves and speaks the way he does.
tl;dr I agree with you that Garry is a great and likeable character.

There's something so... brutal, I think, about Mary eating the candy from Garry in the Together, Forever ending. That was the one proof that Garry wasn't a painting in the world as far as we see as the player, and Mary just... ate it. Just like she essentially ate his life to get out.

The Forgotten Portrait ending really leaves me devastated. When i first got it, the moment Garry is dying after he gave the blue rose to Mary, i thought maybe we can save Garry later because of the status "Garry is sleeping...", like oh he just sleeping maybe we can go back later after we finish this. And then when i think about it as a 9yo Ib's perspective (or any children of that age in general), she can't tell the state of a person whether they're sleeping or dying. On the topic of it being implied that other people have entered the fabricated world, it is entirely possible that every portrait of a person that is made by Guertena is someone who was trapped in the fabricated world- whether they escaped or not. Mary refers to Guertena as her father, and it is entirely possible that she is actually Guertena's daughter- she just got trapped in the painting world and failed to escape (thus why she acts like she's always been a portrait, in the same vein as how Gary acts when he gets trapped in the doll room).
The only person that may have escaped would be the juggler, since in one of the books it is explicitly said that he is a real person (and people who are lost in the art world don't seem to exist in the real world anymore).

So since he made artwork that is supposed to be it's own independent being, they feel like actual beings and want to be with other beings - this is mostly the case for Mary, who was one of the last paintings Guertena made and is therefore also more powerful because Guertena gave her even more of his energy. Which is probably why she's able to create the dolls and the sketchbook and such.
Although I don't dislike the idea of "other people were turned into artwork", I don't think it's the case in this game. The book that helps Mary with what she needs to switch is talking about trading existences - so a living things against another

Garry goes insane though. I don't think he believes he's a creation of Guertena. But I suppose Mary never outright admits that she isn't real, so it's possible. I just don't feel like she'd refer to the other women as her "sisters" if she was a real person at one point. But as for the juggler, the book says he painted a real person, so I don't believe the juggler is someone who became trapped, otherwise his portrait wouldn't exist.

I still remember that doll room freaking me out. I'm not at all scared of dolls, it's just so intense and you know exactly what Garry's in for should you fail. The fact that it's still tense speaks to Ib's strengths. The range of the endings still impresses me, so many memorable bad endings for our trio. Of course, Promise of Reunion is the best by a huge margin but there is a part of me that likes Together, Forever too; I'm reluctant to call Mary a true villain, she does just want a chance to be alive, to experience the world. It's not worth losing Garry, but I do appreciate there being at least one ending where Mary gets out.
This remake was a true treat for me. I agree with Manly's critiques, but I do think the changed puzzles and improved art makes up for it. Beyond that, it's just nice to be able to thank the developer for making such a wonderful game by actually being able to pay for it. It's a big part of why I've loved seeing this resurgence of older RPG Maker games getting remakes and coming to Steam, and Ib deserves it so much.

I also love that they give you the option to fix things if you fail, but meet the requirements to get Garry sane enough to STOP TALKIN TO MARY'S BLUE DOLLS- like, they make sure your work was not all for nothing if you don't give up on him :)
Also I love the differences between how an innocent mind versus an adult one versus a painting views that room
Ib sees it as bunnies, Garry as reality and Mary as friends, because why wouldn't her creations be friends?
That's also why Welcome to the world of Guertena is one of my favorite endings and why it's such a shame we never get to see the painting that gets made in that ending. (Cuz Ib AND Garry AND Mary are in the world of Guertena)

I can see it happening, but not by Mary, nor Garry's choice. If it were to happen, Garry'd go first, then Mary would try to convince Ib to go (cuz she has no interest in leaving with Garry) and then Ib would just be like "...", shove Mary through and then the painting would disappear. Why? Cuz Mary wishes the best for Ib. And if the best doesn't include herself, then it doesn't. But that's only if Garry isn't a potential exit anymore.

I consider it the worst ending, personally, because she has to murder Garry to leave. Garry dies and his murderer gets everything she wanted. On top of that, Ib and her family are brainwashed and will no doubt be catering to Mary (or murdered by her) in the future. Seems like a horrible ending to me.
People can say what they want about Mary not knowing about life and death, not being taught properly, being traumatized by loneliness and just wanting to leave, but it all sounds like baloney to me. She's a painting, if she's lonely with her own kind, humans won't be better. She also had murder on her mind when she wielded that palette knife, so she knows about death. Her killing Garry gleefully and knowingly is why I really can't understand why people think she's too naïve to understand what she's doing. Heck, even if she didn't know fully about death, she knew she was stealing Garry's place and leaving him behind in the world she wanted to escape so badly.
We even saw her braining a mannequin head (which we know is alive) who never harmed her, there's definite signs she's 100% a psychopath that everyone ignores because she has moments of normalcy and looks 8, and I really don't get it. Maybe I'm just interpreting things more severely?

Plus, the game over music plays in that ending for a reason lmao. It's akin to the ending of The Witch's House for me. However, like Ellen, I'm sure her new life won't be what she's hoping for. Mary will most likely lose it when she learns that life outside isn't just playing all day everyday. There's probably a lot that she wishes to do and see that Ib's parents won't just let her do whenever she wants (because it requires time and money IRL), and I wouldn't be surprised if she also has to go to school (because she's a child). Have fun with that Mary!

It's always a blast seeing old RPG horror games getting a revamp, I love the new puzzles, dialogue, and other additions. Also a great trip for memory lane. (Spoilers belowwww...and some theories :D )
There's something on my mind this entire time however. We already know it's insinuated that all the people that got trapped and then killed in the art world were kept as paintings, while being forgotten in the real world. (ex. We only see Gary's painting in the real world only if he dies - we know this because in the ending where Mary "escapes" by herself, Ib and Gary don't show up as paintings despite still being alive and trapped in the gallery world)
But what's been stumping me this entire time is the painting of Ib's parents.
They're real and remembered, so why is there a painting of them? The parents also act like they never met the artist, so they weren't real people who were painted... So what's going on there? Sure, it's possible it's just the world trying to trick Ib, but they usually don't create paintings out of nowhere, as it's insinuated that all the artwork was created by the main man himself. Also, when Gary died he officially became a painting and was used as a deception in one of the endings to convince Ib not to leave the gallery world - just like how Ib's mom did...
As I watched both videos, I tried to come up with theories along the way to see if there's any hints to explaining the parents, as well as other stuff. Some theories I tried connecting was:
Ib is the artist's granddaughter - the one explained in the juggler's description and seemed to be someone he held dearly. This theory seemed nice since Ib would see her favorite bunny plushies and the painting of her parents, along with the existence of Mary, who seems to be similar in age to Ib and could be made as homage to Ib existing. However, it's clear this isn't the theory to go as Ib's parents dialogue acts like they never met the artist and it may be impossible for Mary to have been made based on Ib if the artist is already dead.
Mary is the granddaughter - The next theory sprung to mind due to another comment saying it, but it's the one where Mary is the artist's daughter, or in my opinion, their granddaughter. I say granddaughter because of the juggler's description again. The reason why Mary calls the artist her dad however, is because she believes she is a painting after getting caught up and trapped in the gallery world. It's clear she is beloved by the artist at least, because not only does she have a grand frame around her portrait, she also has her own world section, a deep toy box, and multiple artworks and toys seemingly dedicated to what she likes - circuses and roses. (the clown painting, the juggler, and the multiple rose art pieces) Though it can be argued that Mary likes these things because she's seen them in the art world as a painting rather than her already liking these things as a human.
Ib's mom is a painting - now this one seems crazy but hold on with me pleaseeee. I say this because not only does Ib's mother greatly respects or even obsesses over the artist like Mary does - but just in a more mature way due to being an adult - (she doesn't call him dad afterall) but she also recalls her husband having a "nightmare" about the paintings when he saw them for the first time... She also seems very dismissive about it - even when Ib seemed scared about the paintings as well. (this is seen in the bonus room when you talk to her)
What I'm thinking is, Ib's father got transported into the gallery with his wife, however, while he escaped, his wife died to one of the artworks and Ib's mother escaped and replaced her in the real world. I mean, it also sort of explains the eerie resemblance the mother has to the picture of the ladies in the paintings and heck, even Mary - the wide eyes, odd clothing choices, and obsession with the artist. The father completely forgets he was in the world at all of course, but the nightmare he remembers is just like how Gary in one of the endings slightly remembers experiencing things, but can't quite place why until he brings out the handkerchief. Ib's father not really having a physical item to remind him of his real experience, drops it down to just a dream, while Ib's mother dismisses the gallery world entirely so her husband is none the wiser of who she really is. This doesn't explain exactly why Ib's father is also in the portrait, but at the same time, maybe it does... After all, she replaces someone in the real world - would it be possible the person/people that she's attached to via replacing the other will show up in her painting, depicting whose life she replaced? Like imagine that with the ending Mary had with Ib - she and Ib became sisters, so would her original painting show her paired with Ib? This is the best I can do to explain the scenario with the parents, but it does make sense with all the negative space in both Mary's and the parents' paintings.
All these are just random theories my mind juice came up with and could all be wrong easily, but it's still fun to throw out there imo. Theories are always fun to just think of and share, so hopefully some of ya enjoyed em :)
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk

Oh, random addition that I'm too lazy to add via edit, but I like to think the original wife was the blue haired lady from the very beginning of the game - aware of Ib's existence and calls her a thief after she takes her rose - Ib's resemblance to her mother is uncanny after all, plus it could have been how the woman lost her life - Ib's mother could have taken her rose and/or it's commentary of how the mother literally took her life away from her.

    • @RainyDayTrainTracks
      @RainyDayTrainTracks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Her mother being a painting is a really interesting theory! I've heard of her being the woman the painting is based off before, but not that one! An interesting addition might be the blue and red paintings next to where Ib came down the stairs - they're the two prevalent colors of her mother and the blue-haired painting.

  • @ChoiShiki304
    @ChoiShiki304 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

I think the appearance of the room with the "Red Eyes" painting is based on the individual's perspective. Ib, being a little girl who loves bunnies, sees it as cute little bunny dolls and a painting of a bunny with red eyes. But Garry, as an adult who seems like he may have been through a lot, sees it as what it really is which is creepy dolls and a painting of a scary doll with blue eyes. And Mary, maybe because she's also a piece of Guertena's art, is also seeing it as the blue dolls since they're his works too.
That would likely also explain why there's a book in that room that's about illusions and one's mind twisting then breaking if put under pressure.
Edit: I made a few edits to this whole thing so if anyone is coming back to this comment and it looks different, it's because of some of the replies I read. Which, thank you to them for helping me straighten out this whole thing 😅🙏

Language of flowers spoiler stuff below, do not look until you've finished!
So a neat thing about colored roses is they all have very specific meanings. Yellow roses originally meant jealousy and greed, but have more recently been associated with platonic love, friendship, and care. They were also originally called "sulfur roses" and were very hard to sell, as the first yellow roses had an unpleasant scent, and unappealing black spots. Breeding and hybridization has gotten rid of these traits today.
Red roses, of course, are very strongly associated with romantic love.
Blue roses are mysterious. They represent an unattainable love, intense lust, and mystery.
So only the yellow rose has a meaning tied to the story, but I found it neat! Mary goes from a sweet little friend to a very jealous antagonist, reversing the yellow rose's meaning progression. I guess blue could also be fitting with how many people thirst for Garry.

Is the toy box area easier? I think I remember there being the mannequin heads littered around to act like damage spots. Making the chase a tad bit harder because now you have to avoid the literal death spots while being chased.

That bad ending where ib, garry, and mary stay in guertana's world always confused me. The lady and blue and the lady just have a penchant for murder? Like Garry had his mind broken already and was willing to play with mary but he ends up dead anyway since the paintings got a hold of his rose along with Ib's?
The museum certainly looks more polished but the horror was lost.

Yes, think of the painting world as a Youkai village. While not all youkai eat humans on the spot the inherent nature of such a place is anti human and will eventually lead to a humans physical or spiritual demise.

I first discovered Ib watching Cry Plays years ago. Knowing now the horrifying things about him, I still feel like Ib is "tainted" for me. Right now, this is helping me rediscover my love for the game.

I prefer so much this remake to the old version. I have the feeling that Mary isn't just a bad "person", she just desesperate to come to the real world. She hasn't learn what's good and what's bad so I can understand much better any of her decision.
I was hating her in the old version. I don't have any preference now between her happy ending and Garry's one. I just assum it's because the game was remake better, and I'm so glad of that.
By the way, even if I love Garry so so much, I do like others endings. Who think the same ?

Holy shit... They added the missing paintings to the True Guertena Exhibit!
So for those who have either forgotten or haven't played the original release, when the True Guertena Exhibit got added there were four paintings that never showed up. The "Fabricated World" (even *after* Garry straight up *says* its name), "White Ant" (which can *only* be observed, never interacted with at all) and oddly enough "The Lady in Blue".
I'm not sure if "Tones of the Dark Gallery" is also here given that Manly doesn't fully explore the Gallery's replica of Guertena's Art Gallery/Exhibit and we don't see him go back down to the where "A Well-Meaning Hell" would normally be during "A Painting's Demise" which means both graphically and in terms of interactions (unless stated/proven otherwise) the ending itself got one hell of an overhaul seeing as paint would've started to leak everywhere from "Abyss of the Deep" after some time had passed. (We also don't see Mary's inventory screen *at all* nor do we see all of Mary's interactions with several paintings just as an FYI. Mary's reaction to "The Lady in Red" while the Gallery gets darker is *really* heart breaking, poor girl just wanted friends and to be loved...)

Is it me or is the timer (the bell) for the doll room escape sequence is longer than the original? Then again, the room itself is more spacious in the remake.

1:36:16 something interesting I noticed with the ending graphic, Ib's shadow is normal while Mary's looks like it was draw with crayon
