the "familiar" melody is a rendition of "I Burn", Yang's theme. And a great rendition. The team is FNKI, with Flynt, Neon, and two named Kobalt and Ivori. But they don't show until later seasons.

Facts 🔥
My personal headcanon: Weiss stopped the theme music with the Fire Dust geyser, thus making Weiss the one holding the high note, since Casey is also Weiss's singing voice.
I see people have pointed out the melody of "I Burn" playing (the one that sounded familiar), but Weiss's trailer music was also reprised here: the vocals that played when Weiss tried to take out Flynt.
Also, for when you listen to the soundtrack, most of the vocals come from the song "Neon," but what plays during the fight is its actually own song: a mashup of music for each of the four fighters called "R.W.B.Y. vs F.N.K.I." I don't see a lot of people include it in reactions because in the album it's put with the instrumental songs. But tbh it's one of my favorites because of how it combines the different characters' songs/melodies.

I’m pretty sure Flynt is based on someone from Rooster Teeth, and Neon is based on Nyan Cat. not sure what the rest of Team FNKI is based on, but the theme seems to be internet pop culture

Her name is Neon Katt and she's literally Nyan Cat personified. I was personally a little disappointed in how it ended. Felt a little anti-climatic to just take her out with a random single shot in the air. Would have preferred to see Yang overcome her in a battle in a more climatic way.
This is one of my, and definitely one of the Fandom's FAVORITE episodes/chapters. Wayne below answered your question regarding the tune... it's a jazz version of I burn during Yang's big victory fight.
A couple of interesting references... Neon Katt is based off that internet gif Nyan Cat and Qrow made a reference to who Ironwood is based off of (Tin Man) when he said 'Sometimes I don't think he even has a heart'
Qrow of course is the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz, and you will meet the one representing the Cowardly Lion in Volume 5.

In the book, Dorothy's slippers were SiLVER (silver Eyes?), not Ruby. The whole story is an allegory regarding the state of the nation around 1900 where the Wizard was President McKinley, OZ was Wash. DC, the Scarecrow represented the farmer too dumb to compete against corporations. The Tin Man represented factory workers, and the Cowardly Lion was William Jennings Bryan.
@@ReggieWolf Dorothy is a character who has thus far only been introduced in the books and supplemental materials. He was SUPPOSED to play a role from v10 onward, but that obviously hasn't happened yet.
@@kenschortgenjr7540 "Dorothy" was introduced in the Fall of Beacon novels as well as the first RWBY V9 Beyond episode. I don't want to spoil it for Reggie so the only thing I'll say about that is that the "Dorothy" from a headmaster's name.

Definitely watch 10-12 in one sitting, but take a break after 9. The fans had to sit and think on this episode for 2 weeks because of an episode of World of Remnant. I HIGHLY recommend pausing after 9 and them finishing up the volume all at once.

1:02 If by "based on the end of that episode," you mean the song that was playing, then yes, you are correct. Not sure if you did a soundtrack reaction to volume 1 because I don't watch soundtrack reactions, but if you did, then you know what I'm talking about: the song "I burn."

This episode introduces Flynt Coal and Neon Katt of Team FNKI, a couple of longtime fan favorites who will have some minor importance later on down the line. All of Team FNKI are based off of memes in one way or another. Flynt is a combination of the skeleton trumpet and an RT in-joke from Minecraft. Neon is supposed to be the Nyan Cat. The other two members, Kobalt and Ivori, won't be introduced until much later and they're less important.
One interesting thing to note, Flynt's actions in the fight are actually represented in the score. All of the trumpet stings match up with notes he's actually playing, and it's picked up by a sax or a guitar when he's not on screen.
Once more with the foreshadowing. Penny says something VERY important here that will make more sense soon.
Big things to come moving forward. I cannot stress enough that you should take at least a full week after chapter 9, then watch 10-12 all at once.

Just to tell you how much Monty was a fan of RT before he got hired, he named Flint Coal after a bit in an early Minecrft video they made where I think Gavin made a joke about Flint Coal!

I don’t normally give these away, but they aren’t super obvious these days necessarily. They are kinda old memes now and Flynt’s name is more on the in-joke side…
Flint coal I think was related to Achievement Hunter or some other Rooster Teeth group… When playing Minecraft they mixed up flint and coal or something, so they started combining the names or whatever… I forget… Neon is based on Nyan Cat… That was fairly well known for a while, so I assume you know of it… The last two characters in their team are based on that thing about the dress where some thought it was white and gold, while others saw it as Blue and Black or whatever… I think their names are Kobalt and Ivori.

Just keep in mind Team Funky talks trash but they keep it on the court. In reality Flynt Coal and Neon Cat are really good guys. They the Homies we never see 😂 they know how to show respect and keep the trash talk down to a level where they can still be good sports about it.

plus they did fight how Like Weiss said people from Atlas would. The trash talking was to pick the partners, and if not for Weiss jumping in on Flynt, they might have won the fight, since Neon was running Yang Stamina down, trash talking to keep her focus on her.
I think he might need to do some research on Rooster Teeth. A lot of people, and even fans, have been mistreated because of their current management. It's partially why they're in this position in the first place.
Like I love RWBY, and Red vs. Blue, but I only like the old stuff because both series really got poor treatment after Rooster Teeth was bought out.
Up to you if you put reaction videos together or not. I personally suggest sticking with 1 at a time. That way it feels like you’re part of the group watching the series for the first time, back when you had to wait for the next episode to be released! The anticipation and cliffhangers building up make it so fun!
Penny’s teammate is human but acts more robotic than Penny does herself.
