So what hands-on info do you want to know about the R18?
1. If the center of gravity is helping the bike handle better AND
2. Can you really ride with the fact that if the bike drops you might be looking at a cylinder head replacement? Why isn't anyone asking this question? The cylinder heads stick out so much, that's always been my fear with the GS as well but protection can be provided. What about this cruiser?
How much gasolin need for 100 km?.
What is the configuration of the fuel system? Is the pump inside the tank? The limited range is something that would keep me from replacing my GSA with this machine. I wonder how hard it's going to be to fit an Aux tank. Are the subsequent touring models going to have a larger capacity tank?
The rake and trail yes like one person ask engine guard until then might be just a garage queen for me I could stare at the engine for a long time and what is the lean angle

@@markchristensen5990 i agree. look at he presenter his knees are close to his chest. the lady in the vid is short thus looks appealing and comfortable. i am 6.2 and i get tired after riding my Vulcan 900 for 3 hours.

@@aahr100 They do, I have enjoyed time on Yamaha's Super Tenere 1200, could ride that all day without ever a cramp. I like my leg's under me but why they keep pushing our knees above out hips is beyond me. I see no options to fix this on the R18 except to raise the seat.

This motorcycle looks amazing, with the bobber parts is a dream. From an Italian road king and k1200rs owner.
I am a long time owner and enthusiast of the R1200C since April of 2000. I find it very interesting that they finally decided to build the massive 1800 boxer. Way back when BMW first announced the end of the R1200C, I was disappointed and wrote them a letter about it. Much to my surprise they actually responded. I had included a few suggestions about how to take a cruiser into the future with the boxer engine. Among those were a larger engine of 1400 to 1600cc, better quality chrome on metal parts not plastic, a 6-spd transmission with a taller top gear, and a better selection of touring components, like various sizes of windscreens and saddlebags in various sizes but all fitting the same mounts. The one thing about their response that now surprises me is they said, "the boxer engine does not lend itself well to larger displacements." I'm very happy to see they overcame that obstacle, but feel they may have missed the center of the target a bit. I still believe in all of my suggestions right down to the size at 1600 tuned a little better like the other higher HP and torque found in the current wet-head 1250s. I also think they should have stayed more with the original design of the R12C. In my mind and that of 1000s of other fans of the old C; it was aptly called "rolling sculpture."

I like it a lot, I think BMW got it spot on, and I was very sceptical that they would. The retro look to the bike is the big winner. It will now be interesting to see how the product line develops. Marc in South Africa 🇿🇦
I'm a boxer fan, own an RT and a 1995 Mystic, and have always been a fan of BMW boxer motorcycles. I love the vintage look, wouldn't want a huge fairing but a reasonably sized windscreen would be an extra I'd want to install for rain and bug protection.
I ride long distances on my 1200 rt so don't think lack of forward controls would be an issue. I live on Cape Cod and ride in the northeast US. I don't think the R18 will appeal to my Harley friends but will certainly appeal to the many BMW fans in the US and elsewhere. It's a beautiful motorcycle.
I has BMW 1200 GS LC, Guzzi 1400 California. This seems to be' in life with the Guzzi that desire the terribile back wheel suspension it was a dream engine.
I really would love to buy this one but now.sure why I need 1800 ...why they did not create one with the new 1250 I would have preferred this engine that is absolutely awesome

Aww in addition to this...why BMW needs to produce a motorbike 1800 so heavy and so expensive! Optimizing cost and allow your customers to buy vehicles at lower price range will make you happy by selling more motorcycles and the clients
Again please make a nice version with the 1250 LC similar to this one.
BMW created R Nine scrambler with the old 1200 air cooler engine...I am still waiting to see the 1250 LC scrambler.
Personal recommendation.
~ create an R12.5 with this engine lighter and.cheaper
~ create a R twelve scrambler with 1250 LC...with the same optionals available on the R1250R...
I was going to buy a second end R1250R and make it a custom or scrambler myself but the cost to transform it and buy it, it did not worth it
I have a 2017 r nine t. I will keep my r nine t and add an r18 to my garage...IF it is comfortable, otherwise I’ll get a Softail Heritage. There is no doubt however the r18 is a gorgeous machine. Well done BMW.
Outstanding design and engineering but BMW lacks a strong Motorad dealer network necessary to cover the entire U.S. They should consider displaying these bikes through their BMW auto dealerships to generate interest since these customers understand the BMW lineage. My Motorad dealer is 2+ hours away and my Harley dealer is 20 minutes. Upstate New York.
Yes, it's hard for us Europeans to comprehend this about dealerships in the USA. My brother lives in Maryland and in the end he purchased his make of bike based on closest dealership distance, which was still 70 miles away!
In his neck of the woods test rides are almost non existent, they just expect you to buy a bike without a test ride. I believe is the correct expression is, go figure!
Love the bike from United States. Price might be a lil high for me new but it is competitive. I look forward to the more touring ready models.

Seems to me that BMW did everything right, I love the design.
I own a 1200C and I've been very happy with it. I also own a R1200R with windshield and bags for long rides.

Absolutely beautiful. Owned an R75 in 1978 and loved it. Currently ride a Kawasaki Voyager with no reverse, 760 lbs. is a piece of cake. Vero Beach, FL
I’m from Canada - and while I generally like the BMW R-class airheads, the R18 is not my cup of tea.
First of all, I’m not a cruiser rider and secondly, the beauty of BMW boxers was that they were much lighter than other bikes in their respective displacement classes and so the R18 is going completely the wrong way on weight in my view. As for the ergonomics - I agree: those high “ape-hanger” bars look absolutely awful and would likely result in permanent shoulder injuries within a short time. In any event, most cruiser guys around here will only ride Harley’s - no matter what.
Anyhow - to each his own.
Switzerland here. Yes, I’m interested in getting one. Comfort is not my concern, as boxer owner I know You can stretch your legs over heads, when needed. With the 16l tank and 1800cc You can’t get too far anyway :) I want to see how close You can get to the Concept bike look. The bobber version is a good starting point, I’d say.

I watched you lambast a Harley, and cruisers in general, maybe 6 months ago, then you turn around and praise this. All the things you hated about the Harley you seem to love about this bike. I own a Harley and BMW so I have zero doubt that mechanically this is a superior bike, but now it's clear to me that if I put a BMW emblem on my 2007 Harley Super Glide you'd come out with a video on how BMW perfected the V-Twin and made the cruiser that Harley failed at for years.
I don’t disagree with what you say at all. But from all the bikes that i’ve test ridden (even though i didn’t ride this one), I would buy it to have next to my GS. Not at this price though. I’m a cheapskate.

Well I do enjoy your videos but you understand that I can no longer believe criticism of bikes because you just said that the exact same feature on 2 different bikes could be good or bad based on the manufacturer alone.

My only concern is the placement of the footrests. I still have a 2002 BMW R1150 RT, in pristine condition, because I have difficulty getting comfortable on long trips and, consequently, doesn't get used much. So its relegated to sitting in a heated garage looking pretty. I can't see the R18 succeeding as a touring bike, but as a cruiser, they knocked it out of the park!
Very good video... as always. For the record, the R1200C was not a failure. BMW pulled the plug for inexplicable reasons; sales was not one of them. Their biggest problem with this R18 is going to be seating position. Most of those shots were with a woman of probably 5'6" and a 28" inseam. My chiropractor told me to never ride with my knees higher than my waist, which could be a problem with this bike.
€27.200 here in The Netherlands, with reverse and and some other goodies around 30K. I'd have to ride and feel the weight, but as things are I can't afford one so I won't be wasting the dealers time for now.
Even though current curreny is low, i very liked the bike. If i had money i will buy it tomorrow. Turkey

I love this motorcycle and coming from my beautiful 2018 Indian Scout will be a nice move up to a smoother ride with fabulous engineering. It’s about time we moved forward in this category from the archaic HD culture and all the copycats that followed. The resistance to change is common as we’ve seen with the iPhone and the PRS Silver Sky (for all you guitar enthusiasts). Both were game changers and the hate was drowned out over a relatively short time as it will with this bike. Just sayin🤷🏻♂️. Btw. I’m 5’4” & carbon neutral. Canada 🇨🇦

I absolutely love the design and the huge Boxster engine my only concern is the riding position but I suppose the only neat I will be able to determine comfort is to ride it. CAN’T WAIT.

Yeah the engine is unnecessarily huge and the mufflers are bizarre but damn... the thing still looks incredible. Very timeless design imo, I think it will still look great in 20 years.
I've had five Harley's and frankly i'm bored with Harley lately, there is little to no innovation . I dig R18, give me one with the bobber kit with 16 inch apes and I'm all in. writing from Indiana

Looks decent overall, but that Boxer engine is an eyesore !
Aims to tap into US Cruiser market which itself is on a steady decline (and Harley is looking beyond the Cruiser segment !)
All in all, this Motorcycle is a surprise of sorts for me !
Anyway, I’m from India and reasonably sure I’m not going to see it in flesh on Indian soil !!
Hi, iam 65 living in Amsterdam and have a 2003 BMW R1150R with 120000km on the counter. I think the R18 is a very nice bike. But without those stovepipes. Nice that you can changes parts. I can not buy it, because the risk of being borrowed unsolicited without return. Nice vlog.
Awesome bike, love it! The only question is the sitting position: how comfortable is it during the long run when you have no option to stretch your legs properly? And the price of course... Russia

I am sure my grandpa rode something like that through the steppes of Russia, before having to reverse engineer it while being in a gulag in the Ural mountains. He eventually was allowed to walk home.
Seriously though, looks to be uncomfortable on long rides especially for peeps taller than 6.0 ft. Perfect for the Starbucks crowd though.
I prefer the R1200c. And it's now a collector's item. I agree about the chrome, but at least it was forward-looking not a retro cash-grab.
IDK... I loved the 2 concept bikes but this thing looks like a Honda Shadow Phantom.
James Cooper I think the Honda shadow looks like the R18... cruisers construction started way before Japan put a motor in between two wheels...

The single seater model looks great.
Harley is king here in Texas, no surprise. Not sure how this will sell in the US, that engine is stunning but over long rides there’s no way to stretch your legs out and in warmer areas of the US the engine heat could be an issue. That said I love the looks and would consider buying one after seeing some riders/owners reviews and test riding one myself.
AT 10:10, the knee angle says why this is not (and never can be) a long distance tourer. Those massive boxer cylinder heads can never let you stretch out.
I really love the bobber style, and I]m sure its a superior bike, but i cant see them selling many of these at 20K.
Most are going to buy them and resale within a year, because the wife cant ride along.
I cant wait to buy a garage queen at half the price next year
Nice vid! As for the R18, I saw it, liked it, test drove it, bought it. Pipes aren’t my thing so will change those out, otherwise, I’m going to enjoy it as it is (for now). Handles great and the torque is nice when you twist the throttle. I’ve owned a HD Fatboy and enjoyed it for what it was, this is different and I like it more. Northeast USA
I love it's looks and the concept and the fact that it is a heritage motorcycle. The build quality looks A1 and the engine is a thing of beauty. My one concern would be the riding position, it looks like the rider will be cramped and on long journeys there appears to be no way to stretch out your legs as the engine blocks are right in the way. They do. Just go on the website and build your own. They have straight black parts. Chrome. And even two tone. Which is chrome and black.

I've been looking at this bike for a looong time they look great. They are great. Good to see another competitor to Indian And Harley. And still use the tradition BMW styling. I hope they sell well I would buy one if I had the money. No doubt

From California: This R18 looks fabulous; however, despite having had 9 BMWs (including my current 2014 R1200RT), it doesn't hit my "run out and buy this immediately" button. I also have a 2016 Indian Chief Vintage, and the beautiful Beemer doesn't seem to offer anything my Indian doesn't already--lovely nostalgic looks, massive 1.8L engine with 119 foot-pounds of torque, and the Indian has those gorgeous tan leather bags and a quick detachable windscreen to boot. If I were in the market for a new cruiser, I'd certainly consider the R18, but like I said, it doesn't offer me anything I don't already have. BTW, I am not strictly a cruiser type--I've also got a 2017 KTM Superduke GT, and the Indian was my first-ever "cruiser". It's a style of riding I've only come to appreciate after 45 years of riding "hell for leather" (not that I've given that up--witness the Superduke :-)). Anyway, I greatly enjoyed your review (and others before it)--please keep up the good work!

Class review! Put a smile on my face, and more than once ;-) Went today to the BMW dealer and sat on one.... the weight is pretty intimidating for a small guy, but I want to see if I can handle that weight on the road... so if the sun shines next week ( winter's approaching ) I'll take her for a test ride :-)

I live in The Netherlands.
The configurator is limited compared to the USA or even Australia.
No cilinderhead covers or handlebars among others.
I know how the bike feels while sitting on it.
Was at an exclusif event in March where a group could see the pre-production bike (90% ready)
PLanned a testride when it becomes availeble.
looking at parts to add for all the tall guys out there. you can put highway pegs on the crash bar attachments going off the accessories catalog.
This bike will be great when you want to toe a CARAVAN, in stead of BMW building a bike for the small cruiser market, how about building a smaller adventure bike for the BIG ADVENTURE market, I'am talking about smaller BOXER engine with SHAFT drive (for the boxer LOVING adventure riders) the same as the 1250 GS only SMALLER around 750 or 800 should do it. (HOW ABOUT IT BMW???)
Looks like a nice bar hopper. It's clearly not a touring bike so leg/knee position shouldn't matter. My H-D friends seem to dig it. However, if I had to spend $18-$20k at a BMW dealer, I'd get a R9T/5 or a R9T Scrambler and pocket the change.
I ride a 2008 Goldwing which has mid control. Low seat height (690mm) of the R18 is not going to work too well with mid controls. I can only ride my Goldwing for 2 or 3 hours without using the Highway pegs to straighten my knees. The seat height of the Goldwing is a bit higher(739mm). I hope BMW comes up with an option for highway pegs. Otherwise it is a beautifully crafted bike. I am from Canada, 170cm tall, 76cm inseams.

Love it, just bought first bike in 30 years...the RNineT, almost wish I had waited for this beauty. Hate the exhaust but understand it...would go with the straight black ones and black cover racks for bags and a shield.
Better pipe on that one (not that fishtail). Smart thinking on the customisation approach. I still don't think the Americans will buy it, but it will sell well in Europe.
From midwest with some of the best riding roads. I think the price is too high but I love the bike. If you take the fish tale exhaust off, which I love that bmw made it possable to to easy exchanges, then it would just be amazing. I like how BMW is giving owners the chance to customize their bikes and make it their own. I think that's something alot of other companies miss or choose not to focus on.
Concept was looking better! Carburators in two other side for example.
I ride a Harley Crossbones & have an old BM 1100 GS in the garage & I find this new BMW very tempting ......I like it✅👍
Good video. I'll stick with my Road King. Better seating position in regards to moving me feet around and I like that my side cases came with the bike. I'm not a Beemer hater either, I've got an 86 R65 mono shock that I've had a long time.
Will you inquire from BMW corporate what their business practice is for customers who order an R18 and spec various accessories from BMW's offerings? For instance, if a customer orders an R18 and adds a particular seat and wheels with a specific size tire, does BMW build the bike in Germany with equipment specified by the customer with his or her order? Or does BMW send bikes down an assembly line without modifications for those a customer specifies off the BMW accessory list?
Is a customer saddled with the expense of accessory parts without an off-setting credit for OME parts?
I do not want or need a motorcycle seat and a set of wheels and tires that sit in my garage forever after my local BMW dealer uncrates my new R18 and adds equipment that I specified on my order.

From Lodi(yes, as in, Stuck in Lodi), California. I had a R750/7 years ago. Now have LT. I love to tour. I still love the R look and have found the R18 looking sexy. Thanks for the video. I love my LT but if I won the Lottery, I'd get the R18.

Beautiful to look at and to hear, it even has a decent price, but it has two serious strikes against it:
1) I have two full-length, adult-size legs
2) BMW pretty much every new model BMW launches has reliability issues until the first batch of owners completes the development the factory didn't.

I see the German guy sitting on 1 of 3 different variants of the R18. The one that resembles the concept (looks like a chopper or bobber) is the one I was hoping they would offer for sale. Will they offer this version as well, or only the boring upright version he was sitting on while talking?

Where was the ‘unboxing’ video for this bike? Seriously, other than the exhaust that looks like a backyard still seized by Prohibition agents in the 1920s; the bike’s aesthetics are all there. The weak Australian dollar might double the price to land one here but I doubt the Berlin bauhaus team would be too worried about the small Australian market. For now, my combination of a Victory Judge and R1150R will do me just fine!
A pretty nice looking bike with a critical design flaw... No way to move the controls forward. No forward controls no deal.
I was actually fully excited for this bike until you pointed out there was no forward controls. It never even occurred to me that I wouldn’t be able to stretch out the way I do on my current cruiser.
