Such an awesome video at a pivotal time not only for the community but me personally. Lately I have been looking at getting retro consoles and games from yesteryear to arm myself for the digital future. I want to hunt through my local Facebook marketplace for people's 3DS' , Wii U's and Wii's and games. I'm not new to the idea of emulation but I am new to doing the emulation myself (hacking a console ready for emu). Thanks for including the links for the guides MVG. I'll refer back to this vid once I get the consoles. I'm so glad these games and services are being preserved.
See this is what makes emu/roms/game preservation so so important. I love the idea of the games, and live service still working instead of being defunct never to be experienced again. There are games from my past that I never want to forget. For instance, sitting in the floor playing on a small crt and booting up Ratchet and Clank, Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist of the Roses, or Capsule Coliseum, Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2, and so many many more exciting, wonderful games. If I lost access indefinitely to those games/memories and eventually the discs rot or console hardware fail, I'd be so heartbroken. I've already lost my childhood elementary school, and other things from my childhood. I'd rather not lose access to my lifelong favorite hobby.
Thank you for this video! I'm so happy to hear that once again our online community has done something so amazing. I'm very thankful to everyone who made Pretendo possible and to you for sharing this guide for everyone!

This is amazing, the homebrew community for Nintendo systems have been absolutely on fire since the Wii. I think this will set a precedent in widespread adoption of open source revivals like these, this is the first time the replacement to official servers is more or less ready to go before the official source even went down.
I actually got my first 3DS last week and I was SO disappointed to hear that it would be closing! like, what a bummer! Thank god I hacked it though, I'll be sure to stick around Pretendo and what it has to offer. I really wanna keep playing with people!
That's good news for all owners. This should be mandated by law to companies to provide for an exit path for their dying consoles: make the system available to users so that they can build and develop a successor or several.
Obviously companies wouldn't want a "successor" to consoles 'cause that's competition from using their stuff. At best they should just let people make their own servers, and maybe even help them set it up, for purely preservational purposes. Otherwise someone's gonna find a way to make a buck out of it and not in a good way.
@@MusicComet if they aren't even making money off of the platform (or even games since they shut down the eshop years ago) why does competition matter at all
@@memes_gbc674 I mean competition as in "I took your work and used it as mine for profit". Because to me allowing access to a console sounds like allowing access to how the console works (so like giving a McDonald burger recipe), which unless is like 60 years old I'd say it's still valid for Nintendo to defend that imo. All for preservation but obviously Nintendo doesn't want to spill the secrets, or any other company for that matter.
I played a TON of Super Mario Maker and Splatoon this past week or so dreading this day, but I'm so happy Pretendo exists so I can jump back in from time to time.
I've been around homebrew since before the Wii and DS online shutdown. The Wii community is stronger than ever right now, and the online features are really great these days! I'm very excited to see where Pretendo goes, because if the Wii is anything to go by it will be great.
Well, it's hard to believe today is the day. I'm grateful that we'll have these alternative solutions. Even if we need time to rebuild the other game features, I'm ready to see where this goes. I'm about to ask a question I assume got answered already. Is it not currently possible to use Pretendo with Gen 6 and Gen 7 Pokémon? I wouldn't be surprised if so. @@Omar_E11 Except that a ton of people say that. Just because you choose to be blind to it doesn't make it any less real. The amount of people that simp for corpos is staggering.
I don't know if they will, because I dunno how it all works, but hopefully Pretendo will be able to clean up the GTS on Pokemon X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, because it's just a mess.
I asked a question on the discord a few months ago now and one moderator did they yes, there will be support for Pokemon and it'll even have an "anti-cheat", stopping hacked pokemons and stopping crashes etc
If the DS Pokemon games are anything to go by, then some more obviously hacked mons will probably slip through the cracks of the anti-cheat, but it will be nowhere near as bad as official GTS. It is actually kinda funny how fans are better at running these games sometimes than the actual official people behind it.

It's hard not to be excited about the 3DS and Wii U with the incredible work the preservation community is doing with it. Just got and hacked a 3DS, now I'll start thinking about a Wii U...
I played it again today for the first time in years, and I have to agree. The game just feels way nicer than Splatoon 2, I should never have moved. Although I never played Splatoon 2 much, 1 was my main game for a while.
Good thing about servers for both Nintendo 3DS and Wi U, being shut down by Nintendo, you probably cannot get banned by Nintendo for modding those consoles, since there is no server you can get banned from on there due to not having an NNID account tied to those consoles' servers. Similar reason why you cannot get banned for modding a Wii, there's no account to ban from there. If my computer had an SD card slot, I would've tried to buy a 3DS to mod it, since my previous 3DS and it's charger have gone missing
I hope this works for the Pokemon games like Alpha Sapphire, because I loved going online in them, especially Alpha Sapphire. The GTS thing they had then was so much fun, and I really loved it back in high school. Just a shame I won't have my old friends once I get Pretendo, but them's the breaks, I guess 😢
I'm surprised nintendo has largely ignored this. With as egregiously aggressive as their legal team is about DMCA'ing things, you would think their brain damage would have seen this as some kind of capital offense as well.
Nintendo tends to turn a blind eye to people who aren't making money, like in the case of the Mother 3 translation patch or the ROM hacking community generally
@@agromchung yeah, they don't want to be seen as total asshats. Quite easy equation, Nintendo cares if it costs them money. And as the 3DS and the WiiU are out of support they only cost them money at the moment, so if the community steps up and makes them safe money...
I feel like this would have been a perfect video to also bring up the the SpotPass Archival Project, which can even been done without a modded console. Since the servers are going offline, the 'links' that allow the 3DS and Wii U to download the spotpass data also will go offline today (at least, from how it was described to me), which is why there's a huge push to grab the archived links and pull the data before it's too late to help allow the redistribution of spotpass over recreated networks like Pretendo. Edited 4/8/24 for minor spelling mistake. Oops.
The main reason I have a modded Wii U but not 3DS is because you cant remove CFW off a 3DS without erasing it. Wii U its litreally just 5 clicks of a button to remove it, or just remove the sd card and it will not boot cfw.
This is something I really apreciate about pc gaming. a lot of games usually have public servers backed into the game, so even after the stop of develper support, you can usually still find some online games without going out of your way. and if you do go out of your way, there is often a lot of community fixes.
Maybe I need to try again with Aroma, but my Wii U hacking experiment was miserable. I'm relatively tech savvy, but I struggled to use the environment(s), kept having to go back to forums to find fiddly things that had to be twiddled with, tried all the different ways to load images, etc. It seemed like every tool was in a rough alpha stage regardless of what the project pages claimed. I don't doubt for a moment the amount of crazy effort that has gone into that community, or that other people are daily driving hacked Wii U's, but I eventually had to give up.
Pretendo, Wiimmfi, Insignia, and every service like it are doing the Lord's work. As long as the scene can safely reverse-engineer online services, the games-as-a-service apocalypse can be forestalled. Every last one of their contributors deserves a Chips Ahoy.
I'm gonna try get a few games of Mario Kart on the official servers before it goes down. I'm just so glad that the community actually managed to create a way for people to continue being able to play these games online after this.
It is so sad that you cannot use the same PNID as your legacy NNID… you have to choose another username or it won’t work. I don’t know why the team behind Pretendo did not put any warning either in the official documentation or on the registration page about this issue. I know this is a Nintendo limitation, but there should absolutely be a warning about this since a lot of people will indeed use the same PNID as their legacy NNID.
The issue with at least Wii U servers is that most 3rd party games won't be playable online, games like call of duty or need for speed will lack multiplayer which sucks because they are very unique versions of these games and they were made well to run on the console. Like call of duty while lacking dlc had pointer controls for the guns and utilized the gamepad as a quick menu or even to plug in any ordinary earphones or headphones with a mic to start talking with people. These versions are usually the ones with the least hackers so we will be missing that as well.
Fact. 2+ undoubtedly has more features but there is a lack of reward for skilled players when you can just charge the special meter as fast as possible and spam the crap out of people.
I never play spatoon 2 . I don't know why it's not better. I really prefer 1 over 2 and only played 3 for 30 min . It much harder to join a server than the newer ons but still prefer 1 I hope a lot of players will go on pretendo with there wiiu. 🎉🎉

@stormydeath8121 There's a surprising amount of ps2 games that are online now but yes there's barely any players on any of them ,I haven't played it myself but I think socom is one of the more popular games with regular players
@@ThePolicenaut I know and I have but I don't care for the outdated jank, nor do I care for scam projects that go no where like Task force or HHour. The socom third person tactical shooter is too brutal for modern teens and people. They don't want to be punished for dying like a moron and watch the back of someone elses head for 3 minutes. They'd rather be thrown into a big ass map, with a few respawns, and if they die die well they just quit and start another match of warzone. I've already made my peace and moves on accepting that's the reality of things. Just like how pokemon games are dumbed down so children don't have to grind or spend time figuring things out like we did as kids.
@@CaptainBuggyTheClown It's almost like perma-death isn't fun to a majority of the people that play video games
I'm so glad these games and services are being preserved.
this feels like the halo 2 situation. i didn't get to have my "one last game" before it ended so im glad i found this, i can keep going.
Ooh, this is very good of the Pretendo developers. I wish them all the best in reviving the Wii U/3DS online scene!
This is awesome! Thank you for bringing this up!
You finally recognize pretendo network. Thank you
always did, just thought now was a good time to cover it :)
I’ve been following pretendo for a while. This project is amazing!
I just modded my new 3ds xl a few days ago, after owning it for 9 years lol. I’ll definitely be downloading Pretendo onto it now too, because I love playing with other people. I was sad the online support was shut down, but I’m glad Pretendo exists to bring the 3ds online community back to life ❤
Nintendo: You're not Nintendo! You're, you're Pretendo!
Pretendo: Yes, yes I am.
This is amazing, the homebrew community for Nintendo systems have been absolutely on fire since the Wii.
I think this will set a precedent in widespread adoption of open source revivals like these, this is the first time the replacement to official servers is more or less ready to go before the official source even went down.
There's been a huge leap forward for the GameCube in terms of homebrew recently too, which is amazing to see!
wiimmfi existed before nintendo WFC shut down
@@stormswindy3013 Wiimfi still needed a lot of time after GameSpy went down in 2014.
@@stormswindy3013 Wiimfi still needed a lot of work done well after the Wii services shut down though, but technically yes.
Thank goodness for the community. My 3DS already has CFW on it so i'll look into this.
Nice vid, thanks for sharing your PNID code
What a relaxing new new intro tune 😄
I thought the same thing, so I had to track it down. lol

I actually got my first 3DS last week and I was SO disappointed to hear that it would be closing! like, what a bummer! Thank god I hacked it though, I'll be sure to stick around Pretendo and what it has to offer. I really wanna keep playing with people!
it's been out for years and your just now getting one? that's kinda late no judgement thou 😅
Pretendo + hShop i've heard works good.
@@MusicComet if they aren't even making money off of the platform (or even games since they shut down the eshop years ago) why does competition matter at all
@@memes_gbc674 Maybe they consider themselves competition in a sense lol
Like, "buy the new thing instead!!"
3DS modders might not get as much attention as Wii and Wii U ones, but they are still going pretty strong
Otherwise, thank you for the fun memories, Nintendo Network. It's a damn shame you're leaving, but I'll fondly remember you from my high school and early college years. I'll have to use our remaining time well.
As a cemu main, pretendo on cemu works just as well as on a console would. All games that I've tested work flawlessly and people on my friends list can even see the games that I am playing on the friends list.
I thought emulators don't support online
They say emulation is evil and should be criminal. They say that it does NOTHING good. Then we have things like this. I am so glad to have been introduced to emulation and the romhacking scene when I was a pre teen.
Literally nobody says that. "They" exists in your head.
I just hope I can wonder trade agin after the Shutdown!
It must be stressful for the pretendo developers to have this much pressure now that they're the only option and not an alternative
imagine this: You'll now able to create your own 3DS / Wii U games WITH online possibilities. Wow.
LOL how?
@@ATOMIC_V_8Just use a normal system or emulator.

I hope that the Uprising community will preserve, that game is paradoxically made perfect for the 3DS but way before it's time.
Always happy to see a new MVG video
This is great! No console will die as long as the a community is willing to out work on it.
Love that these consoles have such dedicated communities to go forth with their own online servers
Great stuff, thank you for the video. I will definitely try this out on my freshly hacked white 32 GB Wii U.
Cool to see that the Wii U and 3DS will never really die. I may have to check this out.
I hope Citra's replacements like Lime3DS will implement support for Pretendo or some other online service soon. I was just thinking this past week about how cool it would be to be able to screen record Mario Kart 7 online play

You can restore the server browser for Citra rooms

It's hard not to be excited about the 3DS and Wii U with the incredible work the preservation community is doing with it. Just got and hacked a 3DS, now I'll start thinking about a Wii U...
The gyro controls on Splatoon 1 are unmatched.
I have been enjoying the odd match or so on both wii u and 3ds over the last month or so. Thank you pretendo!
I'm surprised nintendo has largely ignored this. With as egregiously aggressive as their legal team is about DMCA'ing things, you would think their brain damage would have seen this as some kind of capital offense as well.
Nintendo literally can’t do shit.
Apparently, Pretendo even has contacts with Nintendo. (They used these to raise issues with Mario Maker in the previous six months.)
@@KururuJi really? do you have sources?
The Pretendo dev team are actual heroes. I hope someday, I can see my long-offline game restored like that.
Only downside to this is that it's still quite new, so it will take a bit before it becomes really mainstream.
This is something I really apreciate about pc gaming. a lot of games usually have public servers backed into the game, so even after the stop of develper support, you can usually still find some online games without going out of your way. and if you do go out of your way, there is often a lot of community fixes.
No excuse now for people to not mod their 3DS and Wii U now.
I so cant wait, also if streetpass doesnt make it to the switch 2 then im hoping pretendo manage to somehow
and incase of wanting to play ds/ wii games and events online WIIMFI can also be installed alongside pretendo on the 3ds, wiiU, ds/dsi and wii
Congrats on breaking 800K subs. Wow!
So Nintendo has made their stance on using backups of games, but what is pretendo's policy on backups?
Pretendo, Wiimmfi, Insignia, and every service like it are doing the Lord's work. As long as the scene can safely reverse-engineer online services, the games-as-a-service apocalypse can be forestalled. Every last one of their contributors deserves a Chips Ahoy.
Nice. Very nice. I still am in the hunt for a 3DS and a Wii U (and a PSVita), mostly for homebrew/emulation.
Eclipse day and the Rise of Pretendo! 😂
@11:32 - The message from @MOTH on the community board - very clever!
Please mod your 3DS and Wii U and use Pretendo. We need as many people on there as possible. Don’t just pack up and leave 🙏
At least you can easily change it
*I'm so happy groups keep these games going...been playing Forgotten Hope 2 for 23 years...remember when dev's gave us the map making software....* 😞😞
yay Pretendo!
mario kart 7 was awesome during the test beta
The issue with at least Wii U servers is that most 3rd party games won't be playable online, games like call of duty or need for speed will lack multiplayer which sucks because they are very unique versions of these games and they were made well to run on the console. Like call of duty while lacking dlc had pointer controls for the guns and utilized the gamepad as a quick menu or even to plug in any ordinary earphones or headphones with a mic to start talking with people. These versions are usually the ones with the least hackers so we will be missing that as well.
this is glorious as somone who worked on citra back in the day I hope support is added to one of the forks.
@maddox121 citra wasnt targetted directly it was taken out with yuzu who also made citra. some yuzu devs did some stupid shit in the background
Finally, a tutorial that actually provides a link for how to Homebrew your 3DS. Thanks!

I had no doubt fans would find a way to keep servers alive, I didn't expect it to be resolved this quickly though. Mighty Impressive!😊
Let's pray to god Nintendo doesn't go after Pretendo...
Thanks for this! I don't want Splatoon 1 to end so bad
Multiplier on the original Splatoon is just better than 2+.
Fact.
2+ undoubtedly has more features but there is a lack of reward for skilled players when you can just charge the special meter as fast as possible and spam the crap out of people.
I never play spatoon 2 .
I don't know why it's not better. I really prefer 1 over 2 and only played 3 for 30 min .
It much harder to join a server than the newer ons but still prefer 1
