1999 RetroSkins Highlights: Arizona Cardinals vs Washington Redskins

  • Back in the old days of the NFC East, the Redskins and Cardinals played a lot of games but not often with much on the line for both teams. This early December match-up between the 7-5 Redskins and the 6-6 Cardinals was a rare exception. With a one-game lead in the NFC East race over these Cardinals, the Cowboys and Giants (all were 6-6), the Redskins had some mid-season blahs to shake off. And so they did, with a methodical back-to-basics thumping of their former division rivals.
Stephen Davis cruised, Brad Johnson was sharp (except for one regrettable endzone pick) and the defense, led by rookie Champ Bailey (who killed the Cardinals in '99) and our old friend Darrell Green, smothered "Jake the Snake" Plummer and the AZ offense. The red-hot Redbirds, on a four-game winning streak going into this game, went from sizzle to fizzle as their hopes for a post-season return went down in flames.
The Redskins improved to 8-5 with a win that moved them closer to a rare post-Gibbs NFC East title. Prior to '99, the Cardinals (who lost 20 of 24 against Gibbs 1.0 teams) were on a 7-3 run against Washington from '93 thru '98 only to see the 'Skins turn the tables and take a 9-1 joyride vs Arizona from '99 thru 2011. Those were the days...
The reliable and relatable Dick Stockton alongside Matt Millen call the action from a joyful FedEx Field.

First, I would like to send my thoughts and prayers to the Tillman family and say what a special player he was but more importantly I’m sure he was more of a very special and important human being football is secondary. Pat Tillman displayed what it was like to be a real human being and that’s primary Now I would like to say lifelong Redskin fan. I honestly thought 99 was going to be their year team highlights from that season. You almost felt like they’re gonna hit their stride at the perfect time and run with it but everybody knows the history and thank you Mr. Schneider for running one of the most colorful Franchises in the history of the NFL into the ground, piss all over their history, disrespect the team, the city, and everybody who supported the team enjoy living in London !

The 99-01 era Redskins, if Snyder hadn't come along to mess them up, they could have been a legit franchise.

@@RetroSkins Jenkins was with the team through 2000; he appeared in every game in 1999 and even started a few. Unsurprisingly given his role as a blocker, he didn't rack up many stats, but he did get somewhat regular playing time in multiple-TE sets. His lone catch of the year was a 30-yarder late in Week 11 that sealed the team's second win over the Giants.
You're right that Gouveia was long gone by 1999, but he returned in '99 as a mid-season signing (Week 6) after having spent the previous few seasons with Philadelphia and San Diego. It was his final year playing in the NFL and his role was pretty small but he did see the field occasionally in large fronts and on special teams. He wore #56 that year -- having worn 54 in all his prior seasons -- since 54 was already being worn by Greg Jones.
I originally posted a comment with several links as evidence, but TH-cam seems to have deleted it, probably believing it to be spam. In any case, a quick look at both players' pro-football-reference pages can serve as confirmation.
