  • YOU: There’s no way anyone could make an interesting highlight package of a long-forgotten football game from 25+ years ago, with only one measly touchdown.
    RETROSKINS: Hold my beer…
The days of Gibbs and Ditka may have passed, but Redskins-Bears at RFK remained a classic match-up. Like some that came before, this was a grueling defensive gem. Hey, defensive players not named Darrell Green don’t always get their due in post-game highlights, so this is heir day.
The Redskins were shaking off a disappointing opening day loss to the Eagles (the announcers in this one make it sounds like the Skins lost by 50, but it was only 17-14, gang). Here in week 2, everything was better. The offense was fairly crisp, despite the low score, with Frerotte sharper and Allen grinding down the Bears defense. Meanwhile, Washington’s D was unyielding for most of the game, and hung on in the end to stave off a Chicago rally in front of a roaring crowd at sunny RFK Stadium.
This would kick-off a delightful 7-game winning streak that rolled onto a winning season (their first in four seasons), though just shy of a post-season birth the ‘Skins really deserved were it not for some questionable officiating in a couple of late season games. Oh well…
The dependable duo of Dick Stockton and Matt Millen are on the call as the Redskins topple the Bears (the 4th of six straight over the Bears from ’89 to ’99, thank you very much) with defense that made Sam Huff proud.
