1999: Detroit Lions vs Washington Redskins - NFC Wild Card Game Remastered NFL Highlights

  • The Redskins hosted the Lions in their first playoff appearance in seven seasons, and for one January evening it almost seemed like old times as Washington dominated Detroit for a decisive victory in the '99 NFC Wild Card Game.
Stephen Davis managed only a half on one good ankle, but made the most of it with 119 yards on just 15 carries, including two touchdowns. Fan favorite / wayward son Gus Frerotte was welcomed back with open arms - to the tune of 5 sacks (and two interceptions) as Washington's typically forgiving defense smothered the Lions. The Redskins rolled to a 27-0 halftime lead and coasted from there to the 27-13 victory.
This is the one and only Redskins playoff victory at FedEx Field (unlikely though they may be, any future home playoff wins for Washington won't be Redskins wins, now will they?).
Al Michael and Boomer Esiason on the call for ABC for this wild card weekend night-cap game.

Was at this game. Stood the whole time. Tailgated almost every home game this season, and this was an excellent way to spend the last home game for the year.

I could be wrong but I honestly think had Dan Snyder not mess with this particular Redskins team, Washington could have had a fourth Lombardi trophy. Instead he makes stupid decisions like getting rid of Brad Johnson and keeping Jeff George at QB among other dumb decisions. I think around this time frame is when fans were starting to really dislike him. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Norv Turner the ONLY other coach that won a playoff game isn't Joe Gibbs or George Allen in the Super Bowl era

And only two coaches have won post season games before we them - Ray Flaherty (a Hall of Famer) and Dutch Bergman, the latter only winning a playoff to break a tie in the Eastern Division. For as long as storied as this franchise is, there have been long stretches of total futility and we are in the middle of one now.

The 1999 Lions were a wacky team
8-8 with a negative point differential but had they 5 Pro Bowlers, beat 5 playoff teams, and only one of their wins was against a team below .500

When the Lions beat Washington in Week 13, that was their first time beating the Redskins since 1965. They also beat the St. Louis Rams, who went on to win the Super Bowl.

The game where Brad Johnson body slammed Porche!! Great editing once again, boss. Always loved qb’s who stood up for themselves. I must say though, as lopsided as the result was, I remember thinking that the kick block and return for TD seemed foreboding. It seemed to say “yeah, we’re decent but super bowl caliber - no way.” Was I the only one who had that sense of anguish?

This game was indicative of Turner's teams. Up 27-0 at half, don't score again, final score is somewhat respectable. This one should've been an utter blowout. That said, t don't think there's been a better Redskins team since that game. They really underachieved that year, despite winning this game. Lost to Dallas twice, then choked in Tampa. Hearing "Snyder's Redskins" here is a bit sickening as well, knowing what was to come.

How did they "choke" to the Buccaneers? They were legit that year.

@@fantasticvoyage262 They were up 13-0 in that game with two minutes left in the third quarter then let SHAUN KING spearhead a comeback. They choked.

@@wimpingus123 That's not much of a collapse to me. Buccaneers defense was one of the best in recent history. The Buccaneers wore teams down all the time that year with a suffocating defense and strong running game. Redskins only had 157 yards of offense. And the only TD was on special teams.
