    As someone who has studied Hung Gar in my past, it is a great video. These are great self defense techniques , but need to be supplemented with regular sparring by the students. Once they know how to spar , figure out distance vs a non compliant opponent , their confidence ,and ability to apply these techniques will improve.

    My father is an Internal and Wing-Chun practitioner, it takes a deeper understanding (feel of quality in techniques) to appreciate what is being shown. In his eyes he would see what you are sharing as more then generous, thank you for your insight sifu. As far as MMA, that is comparing apples and oranges. It is so sad when martial artist have to turn comments and ratings off just because others can not appreciate a teacher's generosity. If something does not work for you then it takes a modest person with good temperament to keep their opinions to themselves.

      There is nothing apples and oranges about MMA and traditional arts... If you can't apply the art in MMA then you can't apply the art against decent fighters under pressure... It's that simple...

      @@trondyne3513 No, it's not. Some techniques work in a sporting environment and may fail in the real world, ex MMA style, ground grappling against multiple opponents.
      That HAS failed in real life encounters. MOST traditional arts don't do it because they recognise it as dangerous.
      The only reason it works regularly in MMA is because MMA competition is always one on one.
      If they had 2 on 1 MMA fights...nobody would be grappling on the ground.
      MMA fights don't involve attacks from behind..at least not initially. But, traditional martial arts do address that.. people do try grab/hit/stab, etc, other people, from behind, in the real world.
      MMA is not the last word on fighting, dear sir.

      True kung fu and MMA have nothing in common, kung fu the power that you get just from the horse stance alone is unmatched and the breathing movements a fight will never last, my dad was a master I know he was shorter than me by the way I’m 62 had to be good 55

      @@trondyne3513 biggest lie ever told the power that you get from traditional original I’m talking about the old Kang fool, the stamina alone you can’t get from just running and jogging and kicking and punching, to push yourself with kung fu you become powerful in the breath movements and all the hands in his arm to hit nerve punches with fluid power a normal man who has not trained in specific art of breathing and internal organ conditioning you will go down, this is not just a head kick punch art form

    Applications are always contextual. It is not a question of the attacks themselves being often used and to defend those in a determined way rather than to be ABLE to use these techniques in the case of possible attacks. More to understand as technical options for the special kind of attacks.It also makes you less vulnerable if you know such techniques.You can´t defend yourself properly against techniques you don´t know yourself. Action and reaction..very very nice. Thank you for this one

    a very interesting and well done video! I read a lot of criticisms of traditional kung- fu in the comments section. I think some people fail to realize that kung-fu was a way of life, and not just a few quick lessons to prepare for a fight in a few weeks or months.
    I have gained much through traditional training as I have from non- traditional ( Wing Chun) training.
    Unless I missed something, I don't think any sifu expects a student to rigidly adhere to every fine point of his system in a real fight. My experience is that by practicing low stances and exaggerated postures, that in a pinch the body will respond with whatever degree of technique is necessary to achieve results.
    Thank you for sharing these techniques.

    • @trondyne3513
      @trondyne3513 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is not what a Sifu might expect a student to do in a "real fight" the problem is that the student should be fighting in class and there should be no question of what works... Those low stances have a purpose, just as in Western Boxing not all boxers dance around yet they knock people out... If people are wondering what will work then there is a real problem because it means you haven't learned how to fight you've learned something else...

    As a pratitioner of Taoist Kung Fu, I've had the same experience. I even taught "sticky" or "pushing" hands to my brothers wrestling team in High School with good results. A wrestler can not wrestle if he cant even grab you. And most wrestling matches happen because both people WANT to wrestle, or were trained to. It's not that hard to slip away and stay away for those who do not WANT to wrestle or brawl.

    Back in 1978 Sifu Yee palced more emphasis on the techinque rather than the target. The techniques were as I expressed them in my article 9 poison hands in IKF. Sifu Yee and I disussed this numerous times the main grouping of the type of technique double hands, no shadow kick etc. This makes it uniquely Hung Ga.

    Hey 1776JMB, one of the things you need to do is build up your finger strength and the squeezing power. Hung Ga has many training methods to do both (like Tiger Claw training). And then you can rubber band a bunch of round chop sticks together; then practice grabbing them, digging your thumb into and separating the chop sticks, and squeezing the bunch together. There are many other ways, but this one comes to mind immediately.

    Hi Jarrmful, the technique you are referring to can actually crack the eye socket - a major target since it's so close to the cheek bone- if your hands are conditioned and you whip it fast enough. Speed is no good if you don't train your body to withstand the stress you will encounter, that's why the conditioning of the hands, the feet, in fact, the entire body, is important.

If someone was to deviate from what is shown, then injuries can happen. That is why proper training is needed to do these or any other technqiues as stated in the "Disclaimer" at the beginning of the video.

    A friend of mine once show me this video asking me to teach him Sup Duk Sao. He is a police officer who wished to learn Hung Ga killing moves like Krav Maga sequences. I asked him to drill himself in the basics first. It is hard to teach someone something advanced without foundation and martial ethics.

  • @NewYorkHungGa
    @NewYorkHungGa  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @cal086 You're misunderstanding me; to best illustrate some of the ways to achieve the "10 Killing Hand" RESULTS (that's what I was talking about in the beginning of the video), I used these particular attacks (there're others but I can't show every possible way) - most from an attempted grab, but also some from straight punches. Its hard to film at full speed because then I'd have to counter at full speed and its VERY hard to pull your punches.

    Hi MrMidnightSpecialist, you are correct in that Hung Ga and Hung Gar is the same, The difference is that the usage of GA is the correct Cantonese pronunciation as Hung Kuen is a Southern Style a'la Canton. The usage of GAR is more Westernized and is used a lot too, but Ga is closer in sound than Gar - both meaning "family".

    @packie009 Well put. I don't know anyone who trains seriously in any of the fighting arts, whether it's kung fu, karate, bjj, mma, eskrima, savate, tae kwon do, etc., to ever talk badly about another style. It all comes down to respecting the hard work and discipline it takes to train and better yourself. Anyone who makes broad statements about another style is just that, a talker and not training.

    From what I have gathered from this video, Hung Gar at a combat only level is drilling in the places to aim for in order to take out the opponent. I like it, it's one thing to preach "all you have to do is hit this vital part here" and practicing it in an efficient manner/ getting the mentality down.

      Agreed, even if many would argue that real fighting is a lot more fluid than what is being demonstrated on his 'training dummy'. Punching people in the throat probably looks like a good idea to some watching this video, but what happens when their larynx collapses and you're left with a manslaughter rap ? I realise that 'martial' means war but unless your in Afghanistan, the legal system might not see it that way. Might seem an overreaction when we have YT vids demonstrating knives and guns being used for 'self defence', but that's presumably in situations where you are being threatened by an armed attacker not some drunk throwing a haymaker.

    Hi bornehere, The attack you are seeing is an attempted grab, although it can be done when someone tries to punch you too. What I'm doing is moving out of the line of attack, redirecting the force with my forearm as I step into their dead angle, riding over their attack, jamming their arm by coming over and trapping it. By sinking down, I displace their balance, and I strike their groin with my trapping hand, seizing it as I strike. And the rest is, well, there on the video...I hope this helps

    @BushidoCode72 Actually, I've seen friends practicing the first technique of hitting the ear. They had 40 plus years experience in the arts. One of them accidentally made contact to the ear, and not even that hard, and it incapacitated his partner. Also, most application drills are done with obvious or slow attcks first to allow someone to develop the range of motion, then, speed is added later to make it more realistic.

    @TheRoeliskoel Agreed, the attacks are not full blown attacks. More like "this is what you can do if someone does this". After all, this is not a "fighting" clip, but rather more of a self-defense clip using Hung Ga's 10 Killing Hands theories.

    So quick question and it may sound stupid but
    Does Hung Gar/Ga? deal more with power than speed ?
    this is coming from somebody with only a wrestling background
    wing chin seems to be more speed/reaction based
    Hung Gar does look awesome though just because i'm not that fast with my hands

      Wing Chun is actually more pressure based and alignment based
      Hung Gar is being sturdy, hard stances, lots of power
      Their purpose is to break your stance, a couple of strikes/blocks, break your balance, and deal the final blow (like shown in this video)

      Hung Kuen is essentially a combination of old southern China village kung fu and shoalin long fist, with the emphasis on the southern short hand techniques. Most of what you see online is in the power realm yes, because its what people learn first and it forms the foundation. But even here you see some more speed/precision based techs as well.

    in wing chun we are taught to use the hands in a double block by facing them upward at and angel between 90 degrees and 180. when i try to attack the ears with both arms i feel like it lacks power i guess this is the right way to do it.

      Hi Michael,
      Was commenting with a wing Chun practitioner that what I've seen, Hung gar looks great with all its moves, but Wing Chun's my baby!
      Used to practice only as a teenager, but the love of it has never left me! I still think 2 this day, that Wing Chun is the best fighting system inside + outside of Kung Fu.
      I may be wrong, Could it be that even Bruce Lee would've admitted this?

    oh man, these moves are dangerous! that's why kung fu is rarely seen in competition it at all.

    An awesome display of skills. But when the neck is exposed, how can a tiger not take advantage of the opportunity? I'm talking about life or death here. A tiger doesn't fuck around!! It is about life or death............

    OK listen up guys.. TMA or traditional martial arts is legit in many ways.. not all ways tho. MMA comes out of TMA but MMA has good and bad as well. MMA is a sport mostly, and TMA is really not effective as a sport, and only effective at the beginning of a street encounter. MMA and TMA complement each other, but there is no substitute for training in speed, power and technique including all aspects of fitness. All combat is about movement, application and impact.. simple, not easy

      @@johngr1747 Not true, you can if the streets aren't too dirty and if you're dealing with a single opponent. It's not as straightforward as MMA fans like to say it is, but, it can and has, been applied.

      @@davidbarnwell_virtual_clas6729 If you've been in a real street fight im sure you're aware very rarely does someone attack you alone. BJJ is not good for the street its origin comes from competition. I say this as someone who practiced it in the past and as someone who has been in multiple fights. I'm from NYC and I can tell you from the late 60's to 80's when NYC was rly bad these guys doing TMA were legit bodying people. TMA is practical what people fail to realize is the way they teach now is not the same as they taught before. I also have experience in kung fu and boxing.

    these r amazing techniques.but to use these techniques in a street fight against a fighter i mean not an ordinary punk.a fighter like kick boxer or mma it would require more and more practice.i gotta strengthen my body more for that n also do you have any techniques for grappling against such fighters? cuz fighters like bjj n wrestlers r not knowing about this. n if you have any techniques like both standup and ground grappling techniques,i'd love to know about it thankyou

    There are a few technics shown capable of at the least maiming your opponent. Some sufficient for possible death,blindness,dis-able. Very affective in application. The traditional Wing Chun from mainland China has some similar attacks. Kick to coxic or what ever coming up,heart punch with ginger fist, Pheonix eye strikes to eyes,temples,neck,arms. I being a Wing Chun man myself believe Wing Chun borrowed some Hung Ga. Keep on training. Peace

    "Killing Hands" easily applied to Bagua Zhang (or most other martial arts). Thanks, but maybe you should tell us what positives can be learned from Hung Ga. I've always understood Wong Fei Hung to be the "Good Guy ".

  • @neighbourinblack
    @neighbourinblack 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also consider these to be Wong Fei Hung's 10 Cheap Shots/Fight Dirty/Anything Goes techniques. Do whatever it takes to survive. They won't get you a standing ovation but if you rip a guy's neck tendon out or rip his penis off or uppercut him in the throat or actually land a solid strike to the tailbone, the fight will probably end.

    Pretty dangerous techniques, do you think, well is it allright to broadcast these in a public media?

  • @NewYorkHungGa
    @NewYorkHungGa  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @BushidoCode72 If you paid attention to what was SAID in the video, no one ever said these were "killing" techniques. Of course it's rehearsed, its an informational video. For your edification, I choked out a high school champion wrestler, weighing 100 lbs more than me, and had 8" over me, over 10 years ago - when I was less skilled, not with any of these techniques, but definitely with Hung Ga kung fu techniques. Brush up on what the term Bushido means before you use it as your call name.
