      There is a documentary film that covers the decline of Kung Fu interest in Hong Kong, and the growing interest of Kung Fu in the west.In it, a Hong Kong master moves from Hong Kong to Germany, I believe.
      Eventually there will be more masters of Kung Fu in the West, than in Hong Kong.

      Yep, and often that knowledge appears with experience, which of course the young, who are attracted to flash, can't generally be expected to have. I remember my instructor showing me for a particular escape I didn't need to do anything flashy, but just first apply and deepen a basic stance that I had learned as a White Belt, before attempting a further technique.

    That dude certainly knows the small weight distribution effects. He told them but they'll never understand it, until the feel the opponent falter under the technique. When the opponent slips or makes the mistake and gets caught, it's not JUST the physical aspects. The mental damage from having two strikes blocked and then finding yourself in a highly unbalanced position where your neck is the target....motivationally crushing in the mind. The feeling of casually being FAR outclassed, as well as the throw/grapple/strike.

      Look is like this, for any martial art to work you have to simplify the technique. The moment you start adding complexity to it, you start loosing the idea.
      The problem mostly is with the sparring part of the training. You want to keep a certain level of safety and at the same time be able to demonstrate the technique. That's kind of impossible when the techniques themselves, to work require to cause injury.
      Bottom line, it doesn't matter which style. A groin kick or an eye poke is still going to cause injury no matter who executes it!

    • @punisher7772
      @punisher7772 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yes, real Kung Fu is a different story. Many people have only seen the forms but know nothing about the practical applications of the forms. Many effective Kung Fu styles. Especially the internal Chinese fighting arts, deadly stuff. Also iron palm and Dim Mak are for real although majority of people think they are a joke or a myth. That is because very few people know anything about them.
      It's not something your average martial artist is going to know. And your typical MMA style fighter will scoff and underestimate these arts but that's because he doesn't understand them. Nothing wrong with sport fighting because it can be applied to the street but how effective will that type of training be against a guy twice your size who also knows how to fight or what about when you get older and you no longer have the speed, stamina and strength you had when you were younger ? Wu Dang arts are also very good for fighting but rarely seen.

    FANTASTIC!
    It's amazing seeing how some martial arts tie into other martial arts to varying degrees and variations.
    Hung Ga Kung Fu is almost exactly the same as Ip Man's Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu in some ways.
    For example, the hooking hand is the Lap Sao in Wing Chun.
    I watched some others of your videos about seeking the bridge or pulling the bridge down, again, that's like Wing Chun.
    I'm pretty sure I've seen Steven Seagal perform this move in some of his movies, so his Aikido is also some Hung Ga and Wing Chun Kung Fu.
    I love what Jackie Chan said to Jaden Smith in The Karate Kid remake.

    So TRUE!

The other 2 are Kung Fu/Martial Arts and TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine). Northern & Southern China do both, Dragon & Lion Dances. But the North is mostly associated with Dragon Dance. And the South is mostly associated with Lion Dance. Also, the Chinese Lions aren't lions from the wild as they are commonly viewed. Chinese Lions are mythical legendary creatures called Lion Dogs. A creature of mix, of Lion & Dog.

    What this Sifu said here is pure gold, and I think all traditional martial artist should take note, and it has nothing to do with styles.
    Way too many traditional martial arts practitioners are obsessed with flashy and unnecessarily complicated moves. But when it comes to real fight (street fight, self defense, sports...) , all that matters is how we train and how we think. We need to keep them clean, keep them simple, and make them powerful.

    • @brdevans
      @brdevans  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      You are correct, although it’s not limited to that style. The long short of it is that there are many types of wooden dummies in existence. Each one serves a purpose. Since Choi Lei Fut is more of a long bridge style so they adopted this style of dummy. The same way Wing Chun (Tsun) adopted the style made famous in the Ip Man films. They are, generally speaking, more of a short bridge style which is what that dummy helps the trainer focus on. The dummy is just a tool to help the trainer realize a specific goal on top of the obvious conditioning of one’s limbs

      @brdevans I like the Choy Li Fut Dummy, and I like the Wing Chun dummy. Can't hit either one of them...
      I understand that different styles can use these Wooden Dummies. Choy Li Fut actually may have more than one type of wooden dummy. Still, when I see Wing Chun Wooden Dummy I think "They hit it with Wing Chun", and when I see a Choy Li Fut Wooden Dummy, I think "They hit it with Choy Li Fut".
      I have seen Wing Chun dummies and people hitting it with Praying Mantis. Rarely looks as "fluid" as hitting it with Wing Chun...

    • @brdevans
      @brdevans  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@hemispace641 that’s a common thing to think that! Really what it comes down to is the practitioners. It’s never the style it’s always who put in the requisite amount of time to hone their skills and techniques. Think of it like this: you can have an incredible sword (of whatever persuasion you’d like), but if the blade is dull, it won’t be as effective in combat. So one needs to sharpen and hone the tool to be able to use it in the most effective and efficient way. Studying ANY martial art is going to be the same way, so if you train muai Thai, use their engine to train the techniques necessary and do it a lot so that when it’s time, it’s used in the way the ancestors designed it be when in a stressful environment.
      As for different styles using dummies: it all depends on whether the practitioner understands what the dummy is designed to teach you (the practitioner). And because each style is like a different language, each style will have a different flavor in front of different dummies. I’d love to see the videos of mantis on a short armed dummy

    • @hemispace641
      @hemispace641 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @brdevans : The Lee Kam Wing book "Secrets of 7-Star Praying Mantis" has a set where they're hitting a Wing Chun dummy. TH-cam has videos with 8-Step Praying Mantis folks hitting the Wing Chun dummy. Haven't really seen many other types of wooden dummy being hit. Never saw anyone but a.Chy Li Fut stylist hitting Choy Li Fut dummy, but I'm sure it could be effectively used by another stylist.

      I don't train Hung Gar but have met a few people who do and did some light sparring with them. , I'd imaging they have different techniques for that situation. I guess they practice angles and not just stand there in direct line of attack . They also do a lot of forearm conditioning so the blocks are actually strikes and designed to cause maximum damage and can be used to enter in and take the throat, face, eyes. But against a skilled boxer who has high cardio fitness, conditioning, that relaxed smooth speed and knows how to lay traps and feints they would be hand full for most martial artists.

      You can also do this with elbows if they are punching well until you get close enough to bridge. The wider movements are circles, they deflect and the contact point is the other guy's head or neck. Think of it as a halfway point between grappling and striking. Boxers are very vulnerable to grappling. Getting them to block is where the grappling begins.

    • @MaharlikaAWA
      @MaharlikaAWA 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No doubt the guy can move with his arms with good looking technique and with power, but I am not convinced this motion would work in a regular street fight or self defense situation. The student he is demoing on does not even defend or react. Just holds the arm out. I can see that a real enemy would counter lunch easily because his arms are so wide and not protecting his face.

    It's because it isn't practical against other more practical forms of hand to hand combat. Jiu jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai, Kickboxing are the most effective and they work. A Hung Gar kungfu guy that doesn't know nor train in these other styles would be utterly dismantled VS an MMA guy. In every case where there are different styles put up against one another, it's never about which style moves better, it's who put the requisite amount of time into their craft to be able to understand the movement taught in the curriculum. In the case of that fight, the action directors wanted it to be established that both Hung Sifu and Yip Sifu put in an equal amount of training up to that point in their lives, which is why it was also a challenge for both of them. Exactly this. So many people just don’t get it. Just because something does not work against a professional fighter does not mean it’s useless.
      There are tons of stand up and grappling techniques that would devastate a common thug that a professional MMA fighter or boxer could counter.
      Not everyone has a professional trainer, water boy, nutritionist, and medic on hand to turn them into a well paid fighter.
      And seriously, what are the chances of a professional fighter jumping you when you’re minding your own business?
      MMA fighters=good people.
      MMA fans=don’t know what they’re talking about.

    I studied Hung Gar for 36 years, and this guy talks a lot. He has no idea what he is talking about. My sifu said very little and I learned a lot.

    Easy to say when you weigh in excess of 250lbs. What is he, close to 300lbs?
    With that much weight, a little bit of root, and some speed, equals devastating power. True.
    But that is not internal power development. If you can't demonstrate it, best not to make excuses and claim that's because the power is internal and somehow hidden within the body. Thats what breaking demonstrations are for. Good luck.
