It's unfortunate. But the soldier itself make a mistake by talking while sleeping. He break the rules and got punishment that led to this death. This is not school, this is millitary. Soldiers are taught to be disciplined so they are ready for war. Any violation of rules will get punishment.

For those who who don't get it. Their laws don't have the same level of punishments that the USA does. I think it is a good thing over all instead of throwing away a person and them living off taxpayer money. BUT understand with that prison time and what it's for on there record their military careers are over and they are barred from a lot of other work. PLUS the social stigma in Korea is harsh. They'll have to "live" with their action and the consequences. And so will their kids. There is such a stigma for kids related to "murderers." and for it to be such a preventable and dishonorable situation. Ya, they do the time and then it's "dudes you are on your own" with a crappy future outlook.

The remorse they claim to have, shouldn’t be a factor in determining their sentences. Drug offenders in Korea seem to get heftier and longer sentences. At least they get a good amount of jail time. Some SK crimes/negligence ( worse than this) don't even get 5 years. The military need to have some major oversight for every " training decision" these commanders want to do and a thorough risk assessment. No military training will be done without a Battalion/Brigade commander sign off. Any impromptu training/punishment due to soldier misdeeds still need someone in that unit to do a risk assessment where no one can override it without good justification. There should be at least 2 sets of eyes to assess anything done in the military.
