I've been watching a lot of videos from the 3D printing community and I find one major thing in common. Every one of them has a pure joy from their creations. They enjoy the fact that what they have made is now a tangible object. They all show this spark of inspiration and satisfaction when the build is finished. Time to get me 3D printer and some inspiration.

FYI, a trademark _only_ protects the name: a design is protected by a patent. The company _was_ granted a patent on the invention of a "helical spring toy" in 1947. While that patent was in force, printing a toy like the one here would probably have been illegal (minor tweaks don't get you off the hook). It doesn't matter if it's for personal use: patents give the inventor a complete monopoly on making that thing. However, in exchange they have to provide instructions on how to make it and anybody can make them once the patent expires. Slinky's patent expired in the 1960s, so anybody can make an exact replica of a Slinky, and even sell it if you want. You just can't _call_ it a "Slinky," because that name is protected by trademark-which lasts forever unless you stop using it.

You're right with the exception of the "personal use" bit. Noone can stop you from making an exact replica of a patented product for your own personal use. Even a complete car. I guess you could have legal problems if you were trying to reverse engineer something more complicated, eg. computer code inside a product. But anything you can see with your eyes that you can build yourself, nothing is prohibiting you from doing so.

As someone who has been saving to buy a 3D printer I can't thank you enough for how willing you are to guide new printers along with share some amazing designs free of charge, I think it's going to greatly effect my ability to keep at this hobby.

It's due to the limitations of the 3dprinter. A full Size Moby Dick would be a lot harder to print.

I'm wondering if you could use a dual extrusion printer to alternate layers of plastic and dissolvable filament and get super thin spring-Os
I actually started trying this, but the super thin layers weren't sticking together.. plus the single material technique works so well I just dropped that idea

On a side note I was just playing with my first hand spinner and was wondering if your air powered tops could be adabpted to work as awesome air powered hand spinners with a bearing incorporated.

More people have access to Fusion 360. And I think it's easy enough to do the same thing in Solidworks following this tutorial

Hey Devin, I worked out another way to make a helix spline. Make two coils. Then project/include, use 3d geometry and select the two outer spiraling lines.
I love how the slinky had a stroke halfway down the stairs.
