    Ryan, during WW-2, the British and Americans took almost weekly arial photographs of almost 100 percent of France. May I suggest an inquiry of the RAF Archives in England for additional detailed over-flight photos of the convent and surrounding area.

      I’m sure the war affected the nuns, and yes on the RAF photos the USAAF photos might take longer due to the size of the archives but the payoff I think would be worth it😊

    Go Ryan, your excitement is shining through this video! If you have "stories" accumulated for the convent, you can even do a picture book/e-book that can be sold to future visitors or for fund raising. Oh, and the Pethericks should just legally adopt Ryan, lol. He truly feels like family.

    The grout on the stone needs a DROP or two of brown to get that precise color. Otherwise it will be only gray, and the stones have a very slight tinge of brown in them. LOVE all of your hard work -- looking fab.

      You are creating voids by the cellar steps and the original void in the wall with all the stuff work to improve insulation taking down the false ceilings reverses this but shows the original ceiling design. The glassi or ice house was the original fridge to keep dairy and meat cool and fresher in summer ,below ground a steady temperature year round and natural ice collected in winter from lakes and ponds insulated to keep frozen for years untill needed , layered by hay, straw and wood to keep frozen year round.

    The ice house would have been used as a place to store bodies in the summer months ,there would have been a certain place in the ice house where bodies would be placed until they were buried as the warm weather would speed up decomposition of the body ,so the colder the better for storing bodies .

    • @bjbrown
      @bjbrown ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That is so different from here in America. An icehouse here is for storing the ice cut from the pond, lake or river and it was packed in sawdust, for insulation, and if done correctly it would last most of the year. It was the precursor to refrigerators. In fact the ice man would bring ice so ladies could have cold food. Yes, I am getting older!

    • @sineadsmyth846

    Thanks to Mary, whomever you are, for supplying the great photos. I think a display of found objects from the convent's past would be the best use of that space above the basement door. The grout needs a bit of brown to warm the color up if you want the grey to match the pointing in the upper stonework. It would be closer to the color of the stones which are definitely a warmer grey. As always, it's a pleasure watching Simon and Yannis working together. Simon is a fantastic teacher and Yannis is the most attentive and willing apprentice he could hope to have. Watching him observing the tips and tricks of the trade is amazing. Is there any way that you can get the village involved in renovating the gardens. We had a manor house here in Ottawa, Canada that became a restaurant, but the Victorian Gardens were taken over by Volunteers who restored it to it previous glory. Is this possible?

    hello EVERYONE!! Very interesting history tour by Ryan - great to see the various airial pictures too! (Well done - Mary!!) Having a look into the room space about the "morther superior" room, more rafters / beams exposed! The portable "chillers" for people to wear / use was an bonus in the hot weather! Good progress by Simon and Zannis - impressive! Best wishes from Lincolnshire

Can we get an interview with any of the nuns that lived there and maybe more of a intimate history of the convent?so excited to see what Simon and Yannis get done too!!

      Not sure Billy is good with the idea of a seance. He gets creeped out enough on the 3rd floor. That is to say, I believe all tenants Of that time period it was a nunnery have passed. I like the idea of searching british and possibly even american WWII archives for pictures and possible other info. Might be worth checking with the red cross as well if they have any archives. With what has been shown in the attic it is possible they treated soldiers during that time.

    The glass fronted memorabilia cabinet is a fantastic idea. Maybe the gap above that could be for a time capsule. We are loving the videos of convent work, apartment renos, history and the gardens.
    Maybe while you can tell which fruit tree is which you can get some of the pastic write on labels and tie them round each tree. Then come pruning time maybe a volunteer can offer their time to prune the trees correctly and you'd also be able to see what to keep and what to clear from the gardens. I would love to see a call out for volunteers for a week long garden clearing and tidy up with maybe offering rooms in the convent for them to camp in. Logistics of toilets, showers and food could be worked out later but stress the provide own sleeping bag and camp bed or air mattress, after all, camping is camping..... but no campfires in their rooms lol.

      My goodness, no need to get snarky. I have been a subscriber to Ryan's channel for quite some time now. I wasn't being critical. I was complimenting him for doing such a good job. Billy, himself, talked about what a wonderful photographer Alex is and I agree with him! Billy often remarks how busy he is juggling so many different projects at the same time. It was simply a suggestion that might relieve some stress for him. Sorry if I offended anyone!

    What an interesting video Ryan, Alex, Simon and Yanis. Yanis is feeling more confident in his work and is working very hard with Simon. That was interesting about the mortuary if it was one. Ryan why not ask who ever owns the building if you can see it? do not know if it is owned by the farmer (Billy's neighbour) or a company. I think when the nuns had the convent, do not quote me on this but the normal practise is they usually laid the deceased in the chapel (So I am lead to believe). What a lovely photo's Mary sent to you of the convent. Well done it is so exciting to see the life line so to speak of the convent. Have a lovely day.

      The ice room would have done double duty, and had a space for bodies…especially when it was a hospital as well. The bodies of Nuns and important people would have been laid out in the chapel for only a short time.
      The heat, especially in Summer months would have speeded up the process of decay too much for a lengthy laying in state. Bodies would also have been placed in the cold room during Winter, until the soil was soft enough to dig a grave.🖤🇨🇦
