Clear, simple solution: Do not let water sit in bottle longer than 24hours, clean bottle with hot water and soup. Let it dry now and then. If its opening is too small, use bristle brush. THAT IS IT.

Why are we assuming everyone has a damn washer? I have never owned one and even when I lived in a house WITH one I didn't trust it and manually did it anyway

Use a bottle brush. Then boil them.
I usually air dry my bottles for hours or overnight, after rinsing it out, of course.

Besides the icky stuff building up inside areas that are hard to reach in water bottles, we should also be discussing which materials we should look for. It has been revealed that chemicals in plastic water bottles leech into water. An example is bottled water that you let sit in your car during the summer.
The chemicals from plastic even leach into the water at room temperature and the BPA free bottles aren't any better and can even be exponentially more harmful because instead of BPA they'll use potentially even more harmful chemicals such as BPS. It's best to just get glass water bottles. And filter your tap water with a filter such as the ones you attach to your faucet.

They do sell cleaning tablets for water bottles and hydration bladders. Fill with warm water drop it in, wait and then rinse it out

I'll stick with my double walled stainless steel. I like my water ice cold and glass and plastic don't work, the ice melts. Plus, I don't use a dish washer, I hand wash everything. I hate large openings on water bottles, I have a small mouth and Ill just spill it down my face. I have one of those small brushes and it cleans the tight areas just fine.

@@Moonwatery it's actually the opposite though. Plastic isn't good to drink out of. Even BPA-free plastic has shown potentially hazardous-for-your-health results in studies

Abby Beard Same here, been using a double walled stainless steel bottle almost everyday for over 2 years now.
I have a litre glass bottle which was originally sold with juice in it and I reuse it as a water bottle, and once/twice a week I fill it with boiling water from the kettle and washing up liquid, rinse and clean the top with a sponge, think it does the trick 😊
rosiehughes1996 Just make sure the sponge is clean. Sponges are often the dirtiest part of the kitchen, and the kitchen is the dirtiest part of the house.
Yep hot water detergent and a little bleach and let it sit for like 15 minutes.
you can clean it out with vinegar and hot water. But I reccommend glass bottles, plastic is no good for you in any way.
Submerge them in very hot water with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol mixed in for a few minutes before putting them in the dishwasher or hand washing them. My grandparents used to do it with a spoonful of bleach but I use the peroxide or alcohol instead cause I am not sure if bleach is too safe!

baby bottle desinfecters are BRILLIANT for cleaning water bottles, i highly recommend.

I deep clean my water bottle (Camelback Eddy) about once a week. A run thru the dishwasher for the lid and straw, handwash with a baking soda and soap the bottle because i have stickers on it. I also handwash and soap up the lid after dishwashing.
Scrub with hot soapy water every few days and pour hot water down the straw ones. simple.
Dishwasher.....HA! I wish it's all manual washing for me. Dawn does more so it's (less) of a chore. 😂
And i kept a water bottle in my backpack for 3 months...

I clean mine out with baking soda because I have found that soap residue stick to walls of the bottle and hence gives me soapy water taste
Just clean the bottle regularly, I avoid ones with straws, bottles that aren’t big enough to be cleaned properly, and bottles that are plastic (micro plastics.) It’s simple, just clean the bottle regularly.
I use a chillys bottle but I never washed it , you think it's bad? I only drink water from it and pour it in my mouth without touching it.

You can use vinegar or bleach with glass or stainless steel without harming the bottle. Use vinegar inside the straw and mouth piece on the straw lids.
I use a 1.5 Lt metal water bottle
For goodness sake just hand wash the things. Soap water and occasionally vinegar is perfect once a week or so (if it is only holding water)
White Vinegar is a great mold killer and all around cleaning agent.
Use that (warm vinegar works even better)

Your fruit and veggies and everyday food is going to have bacteria on them. The water we drink isn’t sterile either. I haven’t gotten sick yet. Going to keep doing what I am doing which is washing my bottles after every use. Not worried about it.

I use hot water with denture cleaning tablets. Let it sit and soak. Then use hot water and dish soap with a bottle brush.
Handwash with dishsoap. and bit of vinegar.

I had a camelbak for about 6 months.. I found this tiny plug that was completely full of mold and I could pull out the plug but couldn't put it back in. So I just threw it away. I originally bought it because of the hype of the camelbak bottle. I now have a big water bottle with big lid/mouth.

About 6 months ago I was feeling very sick at school everyday and not sure why, one day bored in class started pulling the straw in this water bottle and saw the mold when I got home and tore it apart the amount of mold I saw was disgusting ! After I stared using a new water bottle I stared feeling better.

pink. I could be completely wrong, but I think he meant this: let’s say I had a stainless steel water bottle doesn’t matter what type and I had just finished drinking out of it. Lets also say I’m in school. Well I can’t exactly bust out my soap and clean it. So I’ll just go ahead and rinse it out with water and then fill it up like normal. I don’t know if that made any sense whatsoever but I hope that helped :)
If you just have water in it, then it doesn't have to be washed every single time you refill it. It might just need to washed at the end of the day.
I'd buy stainless steel so that it can withstand hot water for sterilization.

My bottle is stainless steel and double wall so it takes like 30 mins to clean by itself and you have to wait overnight then brush it in the morning
12hrs and 30 mins to clean my bottle
The last minute is to clean the bottle with a brush so it rinses out a bit more
Just drink from a glass or cup. Easy to clean, no mold.
Water bottles are for on the go to hydrate when your not at home or a place where u literally can't just go get a glass my g🤦🏾♂️💀
Simple solution. Get some Milton tablets fill a bowl full of water. Dissolve the Milton tablet and completely submerge the bottler with all parts that can be removed are. Leave for the designated time and it's sorted. Do this once every 2 weeks along with a dishwasher cycle or 2 and your fine.
Don't be a grot just clean shit properly. I think this is directed more at the American market as here in the UK we have had stuff like this know tv and we didn't have N many trouble with mould and so on because they were cleaned properly.
