I remember one , only one. TH-camr who canned, or didn’t like or something negative about this song sung by John a few years ago. He’s supposed to be a top notch reviewer lol. I don’t think he ever played another Farnham song. I remember him saying the kids in the audience couldn’t even clap to the music- or something along those lines.

He's the most beautiful person. Loyal to his wife, who he married very young, hung out with all types of singers but never got into drugs and alcohol, he is charming, yet down to earth. You must listen to all the different styles he could sing. But also try my favourite Burn For You written for his wife. He's in his 70s and has been ill, but he has the love of a good family and all the Australians who grew up with his fabulous voice.

John Farnham is known as 'The Voice' because he has a unique sound, is a powerful singer with a big vocal range, can sing in over 20 genres, his interpretation of song is brilliant, he has a singing career of 6 decades, his music been a best seller and topped the pop charts over that time, is a consummate showman, is magnetic and charismatic, has wonderful rapport with his audiences, has books and a recent documentary film about him published and released about him and is is humble, gracious, friendly and kind. Day three of suggesting 'Please Dont Ask Me' by this same guy, performed with Olivia Newton John. Or 'When Something is Wrong With My Baby', with Jimmy Barnes. Or literally anything at all that John sung live. 'You're the Voice' is unofficially Australia's national anthem, so you can't go wrong with that one (at this same concert)
For some brief background, this is a cover of a Beatles song, or more specifically - a complete re-arrangement. I
He's had an almost 60 year career, which was likely ended last year by surgery to treat mouth cancer, and the entire country pretty much adores him. You're spot on about his personality - he didn't make much effort to crack the overseas market because he was content staying home with his wife and family. Just about any time Australia has some sort of benefit concert for natural disasters and the like, John is front and centre with his time. His crowd interaction and engagement is second to none, and there are plenty of examples of him just enjoying banter with both his backup singers and band members (eg, Angels - Live 2000, or 'Granada with Anthony Warlow (i think the best video on youtube of this one is called 'elevates us to high art' or some such)), but by far my favourite is his 'You're The Voice' performance at the Arias in 2003. It's his hall of fame induction and the love, affection and adoration shown from the who's who of the Australian music industry is just something to see.
Lots of people are going to suggest 'When The War Is Over' by John, and rightly so - but i'd highly suggest checking out the Cold Chisel live version first. It's an excellent contrast.

Thanks for the intelligent and astute reaction. It is a massive vocal performance by Farnham. As a singer with that range he is amazingly grounded. But that's just the beginning. One of the three or four best male vocalists of our era - genre for genre, opera to hard rock, maybe the best - but hardly known outside of Australia. The sax solo is great. The saxophonist imitates the qualities of John's voice masterfully. But then, just when you think the song has peaked, Farnham takes it next level and literally out-sings the saxophone.

John is the Voice and loved. You just have 53 years of music to hear. He is a showman and that is why he is always better live. He is funny, kind and he cares about everyone. The Orchestra love playing for him and. So does his band, his backup singers love him and we love them, they are all family.
As for what to play next, what genre would you like? He can sing anything including Opera. I have seen him do a funny Opera song and a serious one. He has some beautiful ballads like Burn For You that he co-wrote for his wife. Or Please Don’t Ask Me which was a solo but he sings it with Olivia Newton John at the Main Event Concert. We lost her not so long ago so we all prefer that one just now. He does have to turn his head away a couple of times so Livvie doesn’t go deaf.
Or his sound check song, Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog is a must. You will only find an album cover photo of him singing that one. I finally found a recording of it on an album I have never heard of. I think it was called rarities. I have even heard him sing Country a few month ago. Or the last night off Jesus Christ Super Star singing Gethsemane. When John makes a Cover he makes it his. Thank you.

    @stevegraham3817 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
This song is one of the last songs of the night after he has already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours, and Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul.
A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also.
The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one.
    -Burn For You..
    th-cam.com/video/4PPvOhPspEA/w-d-xo.html
    -Angels..
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.
JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years.
    th-cam.com/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/w-d-xo.html
-To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa.
    Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field.
    th-cam.com/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/w-d-xo.html
    -Please Don't Ask Me..
This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well..
    th-cam.com/video/2uV_tZODfK8/w-d-xo.html
-When Something Is Wrong With My Baby....
And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar.
    th-cam.com/video/AU_bCchDWF4/w-d-xo.html
    Or this version.
    th-cam.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/w-d-xo.html
    -When The War Is Over…
Possibly one of his greatest vocals.
    th-cam.com/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/w-d-xo.html
    -Or is the greatest.
    Gethsemane..
    th-cam.com/video/k5woMZtClhI/w-d-xo.html
    -How about a mike test.
He has the power and ability to distort microphones, amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol
    Black Dog.
    th-cam.com/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/w-d-xo.html
Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.

People who hear him for the first time are often left stunned and asking themselves why they've never heard of him. As for recommendations there's about 60 years of content. Gethsemane last night 1992 is one I always recommend, because it showcases not only his flawless vocals but also his mesmerising stage prescence. When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, with Jimmy Barnes is brilliant. You're The Voice is his biggest selling song and Australias anthem. When The War is Over, In Days To Come, That's Freedom, I Can Do Anything, It's a Long Way To The Top- the version with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is next level. Burn For You- a beautiful ballad. That's a start, and there are lives available for all these. Live is amazing because John is energised by his incredible fans and pushes his voice to exellence unmatched. He loves them, they love him. It's just a huge love in really.

I see you've finally found our Farnsey! He is very much loved in Australia and his song 'You're The Voice' is pretty much Australia's unofficial national anthem. My parents met him very early on in his career when he had a song called 'Sadie The Cleaning Lady' out and recalled him being so charming to meet and chuffed that they loved his song. He is well known for being a grounded, down to Earth individual. He appeared in a version of Jesus Christ Superstar (as Jesus, of course - you'll find that online too!) and friends of mine who were in show recall getting a random phone call in their hotel room from him asking what they were up to and if they wanted to go and do something. Sadly, he is rather unwell at the moment and has been struggling with health issues over the past 12 months, so Australians are sending him love and support any way they can lately.

Unfortunately no where near enough footage available on these platforms to remotely give him justice. Let's just say Queen wanted him to be their new lead vocalist & he said no!. Worth checking him out as the lead in "Jesus Christ Superstar" as well.
AND, the man had it all. The niciest, humble, funniest Aussie you'd likely ever meet.
Unfortunately in his 70's now & has had surgery for cancer which removed a part of his jaw. Chances are we will never hear him sing again.
I could list every one of his songs & duos but hopefully others will. Australia has an amazing array of talents who don't chase the international fame circus.
However he is the GOAT. He has had the best selling album in Aus since early 80's & that will never be broken.

John (for me) is the NO. 1 male vocalist and many many other people would agree.

Welcome to the John Farnham rabbit-hole. So many to recommend, but I'll begin with John & his entire band singing an a-capella version of Love's In Need by Stevie Wonder (one of John's favourite singers). It is outstanding. I'll follow that with It's A Long Way To The Top for sheer energy & vocal performance. Always watch the LIVE performances of John to have a true indication & representation of his vocal, lyrical & crowd-pleasing mastery. ❤

Yes, a phenomenonal performance, &, among the other suggestions, you would also probably enjoy him singing "Granada" live with another Aussie, Anthony Warlow. You'll also see their great character on stage as well

Hear hear to all the comments and suggestions here. My favourite is his solo rendition of the awesome Cold Chisel song When the war is over. He has one performance video out there with the MSO, another So, but not this particular concert. Love Farnsey.

"A vocal savage" 🤣 correct. And no there really isn't a better way to describe his singing than "the voice of an angel", he is basically Australian Jesus and is a beautiful human.

John is the best. Any live performance is the way to go. His voice is brilliant and his interaction with his band and the crowd are second to none. He jokes with the crowd. I like hearing him talk nearly as much as his singing. His duet with Jimmy Barnes called When Something is Wrong wit my baby and also his duet with Olivia Newton John called Please Don’t Ask Me. Otherwise him singing You’re the Voice or Playing to Win from the same concert with the orchestra are brilliant.

May I suggest 'Angels' sung with his long time backing singer Lisa Edwards, in a live performance. I'll try and find the link. It gives you s taste of his larrikin sense of humour as well as being an absolutely perfect example of brilliant ensemble work.

A further comment, try "Gethsemane", "Grenada", "You're the Voice" with the same Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, "Please Don't Ask Me" with Olivia Newton John, "Touch of Paradise", "Burn for You", "Black Dog", "Playing to Win", "Chain Reaction", "Two Strong Hearts", "It's a Long Way to the Top" (same Melbourne show), "When Something is Wrong with My Baby" (Hey Hey It's Saturday version)... seriously, there are so many live performances. He's best when he's live.

We are lucky to have these to watch as we probably will never hear John sing live again as we had surgery last year for mouth cancer.
I would recommend you listen to John sing Amazing Grace. A MA ZING!!! That was just last song of the night after 3 hours on stage. No gimmicks, just raw talent.
I may be biased but John is the best vocalist ever. She is a born showman. And the amount of times he tossed his microphone stand in the air, I can’t count how many lights he broke.
We love you John, get well, get stronger.

Yours was a very good, honest reaction to hearing John for the first time. One thing to remember, is to, where possible, react to John's 'Live' performances. His official videos are very good but do not reveal his showmanship in which he is consummate. For me, his performance of 'Gesthemene' from Jesus Christ Superstar, where he plays Jesus talking to God before he is arrested and crucified by the Romans, is absolutely 'Top Shelf' Farnham. Then again, just about everything he sings could be described similarly. I'm around John's age so I have been aware of his vocal ability for many years. His cover of Led Zeppelin's 'Black Dog' is a studio version but not to be missed. John uses this song as his 'Sound Check' before performing. A very young Farnham sang a Simon and Garfunkle song, 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' whick should also be viewed.

For acapella gospel try Amazing Grace with Venetta Fields and Lindsay Field. He worked with Ray Charles at a casino opening, and Celine Dion in Australia. Turned down replacing Freddy Mercury in queen after his sad passing. Worked with Little River Band for a few years. Try Gethsemane on the last night of JC Superstar in Sydney.

Having a look through your other reactions I agree with @micheleallen that John singing with Olivia Newton John would be right up your alley. Also based on the Aussie theme in some of your reactions, Kasey Chambers doing an Eminem cover (Lose Yourself" live in Newcastle might also be one for you to react to. Subscribed, liked and thought your reaction was great.
