It was not 'the' END of this particular concert. There was another encore with 2 more songs (Sadie and It's a Long Way to the Top) that followed this song on this particular night. John was known to mix things up between nights.

It’s a brilliant rendition of the song. Deep Purple actually sang the first ever slow version of Help which is not entirely dissimilar to John’s version. John however took it to a whole new level with his vocal prowess and emotive solo performance with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Just brilliant! ❤❤

John was born in England, but moved to Australia as a small child. He had a big hit in the 60’s that kicked off his career and we’ve loved him ever since. He was diagnosed with jaw cancer recently and had a 13 hour operation to remove it. We Aussies cried when we heard. He remains positive but I fear we have heard him sing for the last time. We simply love him. No auto tune. Just pure talent. He turned down going to America for arena concerts because he had a wife and small kids, and that was more important.

John should always be listened to in a LIVE performance. John's signature song is You're The Voice from this concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and is why he is colloquially called "The Voice". He is a true gentleman and consummate entertainer who interacts with his audience, he also performs duets with fellow Australian artists and we'll known International artists. His duet with Olivia Newton John from The Main Event Concert singing Please Don't Ask Me is enthralling, and not to be missed.

John’s voice can be felt on a cellular level “frisson” and the fact that he sounds that good at the end of 2+ hours of concert speaks to his talent. Others came after him with their arrangement of this arrangement, like Tina Turner, but this is my favourite and I grew up listening to the Beatles. Australia loves you John, get well soon.

Nothing wrong with preferring the Beatles version, you obviously appreciated Johns vocal abilities. He is known as "The Voice" here and he had this name decades before the reality singing program popped it's head up, because of his abilities and his hit song "You're the Voice" (which you should totally check out from the same concert).
He was never huge outside Australia because he didn't want to leave his young family behind to tour overseas. This is a man Celine Dion fangirled over getting to sing with him.
He is also one of the most humble down to earth entertainers on the planet. Unfortunately last year he was struck down with a mouth cancer which he is currently recovering from surgery for. We are all wishing him well and a speedy recovery.
Oh and this performance was at the end of a nearly 3hr concert.

John 1st recorded his version in 1980, just prior to Lennon's assassination. And although Deep Purple did do a slow version of the song in 68, it is just the original song at a slower tempo. John did his own arrangement of it and it was reported that Yoko said John Lennon had heard it and said this was the way it was meant to be done. Tina heard it when she toured Aust and added it to her repertoire.🙂 Glad you enjoyed our John, the legend, the "Voice" as he is known here in Australlia. That song was one of a number of encores following a 2+hr concert. Anything from this concert is Epic... th-cam.com/video/UWnm_qwa2Xg/w-d-xo.html

John Farnham’s version of Help! has almost wiped the original Beatles’ version from my memory. This is the one I hear in my head now. I understand he developed this arrangement while he was trying to learn to play it on piano.
I used to avoid all Live recordings of any vocalist or band because the recorded versions were clean and on pitch and they never sounded the same or as good when performed live.
But I underestimated the sheer brilliance and quality of Farnham’s voice. So now I much prefer to hear and watch him when he performed live. He gave it everything on every occasion. He showed those record execs and DJ gatekeepers what real talent can do. Shame on them for blocking him for so long.
I hope he will be able to sing again for his own sake, whether he ever sings publicly again or not. God Bless John Farnham.

Hey there, Sir Walterooski. We Aussies genuinely adore Farnsey as he’s often called. I grew up from the age of ten listening to John and Olivia Newton John on Australia’s music tv show Countdown (the UK equivalent was Top of the Pops). When John released this song I considered it (in my teenage mind) a completely different song to The Beatles Help but grew to love it despite being weaned on The Beatles. John is not only a legend for his voice in Australia but also as a true blue Aussie and a genuinely hilarious and kind man to absolutely everyone with zero ego. He made many many guest appearances on the extremely popular Saturday night comedy show ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’. He also performed in many stage musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar. Anything from the Age of Reason Tour is a hit. I feel so blessed to have listened to him for decades. He’s very sick right now with throat cancer and we are all praying for him and his family. Thank you for your lovely reaction. It meant a lot to me. Cheers, mate. From Tasmania, Australia 👋🦘🦘🐨🦎🇦🇺

I'm glad you enjoyed this performance of Help by John Farnham.
It's always great to see new reactors to this great Australian musical treasure. John Farnham's vocal range is very impressive, so much he has earned the respect of many music stars around the world. Tom Jones, Celine Dion, Richard Marx, to name a few.
You also probably noticed how when John sings, especially when he belts it out, that he has the mic a bit further away from his mouth. That's how powerful his voice actually is.

  • @stevegraham3817
    @stevegraham3817 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
This song is one of the last songs of the night after he has already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours,
Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing. Either way, it was one of multiple nights that he did on January 4-10, 1989, so his voice is still worthy of the accolades.
Not many other singers can belt like that for even 2 or 3 nights without a rest.
And besides picking at the exact details or this exact performance, Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul.
A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also.
The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one.
    -Burn For You..
    th-cam.com/video/4PPvOhPspEA/w-d-xo.html
    -Angels..
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.
JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years.
    th-cam.com/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/w-d-xo.html
-To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa.
    Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field.
    th-cam.com/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/w-d-xo.html
    -Please Don't Ask Me..
This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well..
    th-cam.com/video/2uV_tZODfK8/w-d-xo.html
-When Something Is Wrong With My Baby....
And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar.
    th-cam.com/video/AU_bCchDWF4/w-d-xo.html
    Or this version.
    th-cam.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/w-d-xo.html
    -When The War Is Over…
Possibly one of his greatest vocals.
    th-cam.com/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/w-d-xo.html
    -Or is the greatest.
    Gethsemane..
    th-cam.com/video/k5woMZtClhI/w-d-xo.html
    -How about a mike test.
He has the power and ability to distort microphones, amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol
    Black Dog.
    th-cam.com/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/w-d-xo.html
Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.

It wasn't the end that particular night. It was the end of the first encore. Sadie and It's a Long Way to the Top was the second encore and the end of that recorded night.

The Beatles sung this as a pop song. John Farnham took all the angst that were always in the lyrics and applied it to the tune.

LOL. Welcome to the Farnham rabbit hole. If you leave him with this song only… that’s unfortunate. Mind you, this was after a 2 hr concert with the MSO. His voice is ALWAYS perfect. This year he’s had some troubles. Surgery etc. we hope him all the best. ❤

If you are reacting to the Voice Australian’s just move in and your followers increase. That was an encore after using that voice for two to three hours. His Documentary of his life was released May 18th. His start was so hard.
You have about 50 plus years of music to choose from. John had a number one album in five consecutive decades. The Whispering Jack album was at number one for more than six months and even Michael Jackson couldn’t move him. John is humble, kind and wonderful, he is loved. He sings many genres naturally, even Opera. I am new sub from Queensland Australia. Thank you.

I like both versions of the song but John Farnham was the first guy I every fell I love with. My husband of over who I’ve been with for over 30+ years even knows he has to take a back seat to two people. My son and John Farnham. I believe the man should be given a new mane for everything he’s done for the entertainment industry and Australia…. Sir John Farnham

Farnsey is a living legend in Australia, fantastic and powerfull voice and an awesome human. Growing up i knew this version first and when i first heard the Beatles' version i was like wow the Beatles covered John Farnham...lol i was young 😂
I can understand what you were saying about liking the Beatles' version better but this will always have a pkace in my soul! And hey you're allowed to be wrong occasionally 😂
Aussie sarcasm btw..we have to qualify it sometimes so not to cause offence. 😅

The Lenon thing is apocryphal. There are interview transcripts where he says he intended it as a slow ballad but the producers insisted on the version they ended up with.

John first sang his version of The Beatles classic song Help at a Royal Command Performance, during his transition from Johnny Farnham the pop idol to John Farnham the adult entertainer; I believe he released this in 1977, this performance from the Classic Jack Concert is much orchestrated and performed.

  • @Tamara_Jean

I feel like the entire sentiment between the two versions is very different. I interpret the Beetles version as being a group of inexperienced young men growing up and asking for help learning how to be men. John’s version is almost a sequel of sorts, showing that even strong people can be vulnerable and need help sometimes. I think that’s why people relate more to one version or the other. Just my interpretation anyway.

Thi is how Lennon wanted the tempo of this song to be and I'm sure he thanked Farnham for singing it the way he wanted it to be sung. I'm on Farnham's side here it is a song that has lyrics deserving to be heard in that slow tempo. As you hear more of this English born Australian, just as much loved in New Zealand, you'll find out this legend can sing any genre. Here's some more you have to hear, this one is Cold Chisel's but John's version is way better, 'When The War Is Over' th-cam.com/video/BekbvlLzMWc/w-d-xo.html, 'That's Freedom' th-cam.com/video/JWjtlMBl3Xo/w-d-xo.html, 'Two Strong Hearts' th-cam.com/video/tqaMHMooiEU/w-d-xo.html, 'Reasons' th-cam.com/video/X4b5CYJz_lM/w-d-xo.html, 'Touch Of Paradise' th-cam.com/video/-N_rwDyGmyU/w-d-xo.html, and the unofficial national anthem of Australia, the song I recommend you listen to next 'You're The Voice' th-cam.com/video/6m2m_9Uijso/w-d-xo.html. So have fun listening to one of the greatest voices of all time.
