We're beginning to think Toyota made a wise move here. Several comments compare the new Corolla to the new Mazda3. Even if it's to say the Mazda looks better, that's good company for the Toyota...
Totally different buyers. Corolla buyers are not enthusiasts, we'd be surprised if most Corolla owners even know or care what kind of engine is under the hood.
I recently purchased a 2014 Corolla L with 6-speed stick for $17k out the door. What I don't like about the car is how road noise from the rear tires emanates inside the car. There is very little insulation underneath the car and inside the trunk. Any road irregularity causes a low level bass note projected from the back seat to the driver's ear. It's really annoying. Plus the 6-speed isn't the smoothest shifter and the clutch lacks feel. I like the car's roomy interior, fuel economy and the 1.8L engine is a decent, proven power plant for this price point. Overall, I would of passed on the Corolla and gone with a Fiesta or Focus hatchback. Hopefully - long-term - I can hang my hat on Toyota reliability. I'm certainly not driving the Corolla for joy of driving. It's an appliance.

I love cars and I know it's not all about looks but if I were the typical buyer my thinking would be 1st, does it look good?(why get an ugly car), 2nd Is it a good car?(no problems with how it runs etc.), 3rd how much?is it worth the price? If "yes" to all three then it's time to compare. This Corolla looks fantastic, inside and out and I think it looks better than the Mazda 3 mainly cause I'm not in love with the look of the front of the Mazda.
Corolla is the best ECONOMICAL car you can buy my brother owns a 2004 corolla we took it to vegas on a $45 full tank of gas all the way we made it no problem try that on a V6 or a V8 if you know what i mean lolz
It was about time Toyota redid the Corolla. It looks good. I hope the Matrix also gets a new look for 2014, but I'm hearing the Matrix will not go past 2014.
If people don`t like the old-fashioned 4-speed authomatic or a CVT, then whats wrong with a 6-speed manual? Unless you spend all your time in traffic, a manual transmission is a cheap, simple and effective solution for a compact car. More interesting perhaps: Will the US Corolla be available with the hybrid drivetrain from the Prius? That is already the case for the EU Auris, which is basically just a hatchback version of the Corolla with a different name plate.
Don't forget about Toyota's resale value, you may save money on things like the Dart today, but you will pay for it down the road. I don't think a Dodge has ever been a smart investment.
IMO it's not worth the MPG tradeoff with larger non-turbo engines in an econobox. They just suck more gas and the acceleration difference is negligible in the real world since you have to wind the engine out to feel the extra power. Now if there was a turbo engine offering then it's a different story altogether since the boost will make all the difference in the higher elevation areas, plus you can mod the turbos for plenty more power - well worth the mpg tradeoff.
Im torn between the Scion tc and the Corolla s. After seeing this video I think it will be more practical and I will get more for my money with a corolla. I only wish it had a larger engine option.

Have you looked in to the new Mazda 3? I thought this will be the year of the Corolla, with the looks of cars like the Sentra and the Cruze, but when I saw the 3, I knew the race was over before it even begun.
Mazda 3 is very stylish but the longevity and durability of the 3 is no where near as good as the corolla. Here in the UK we have the Auris, which is our corolla (they changed the name to make it sound more posh) ours has a different exterior but virtually the same interior. I have a 2012 model. I love it to bits. Really nice car. Great review :D
CVT would be so perfect if the driver could choose the engine speed or at least make it predictable...great for the average economy buff ...the 3 or a VWmark 7 for me....but a FiestaST would be ok if I were younger.

I got the Toyota Corolla Sport+ and there's one thing I don't like the seats... In the sport+ you get leather seats... BUT IT'S MIXED WITH CLOTH!! I mean I'm paying for the top of the line car AT LEAST give me ALL LEATHER so I can get my moneys worth.
It's too bad such pretty bodywork is wasted on an outdated powertrain and chassis. I'd never buy a Corolla, but it's a shame when a good looking car is outdated and outperformed from the very beginning.

most Corolla customers couldn't care about how many gears the transmission has, just as long as it's reliable, gets good MPG and maintains its value.
This is the best Toyota I've driven from the 70's to 2000's.
The base L model has a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission, that is true. All other version get the CVT.

I was set on one until they said it still has a solid axle in the rear and drum brakes. :( Until that changes I'm going to look else where.
