  • Rodney Dangerfield makes one last visit to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson to wish his old friend a farewell on his last year hosting the show.
00:59 “I know I’m ugly. I asked the bartender to make me a zombie. He told me God beat him to it.”
05:11 “When you get older, they say the first thing that goes is the mind. I say they missed by three feet.”
08:11 “You know what they say? It’s lonely at the top… when there’s no one on the bottom.”

There's a video on TH-cam of Rodney Dangerfield on David Letterman's show but David Letterman kept interrupting the flow of jokes. Rodney D pauses before the punchline and Johnny Carson knows to keep quiet during that pause. David Letterman didn't know and tried to come in with his own wit - it's called 'treading on the jokes' and it ruins the surprise of a funny line. Johnny Carson seems to be doing nothing as an interviewer but in fact he is trusting the comic to fill the silence with something worth waiting for. That's a skill which many TV presenters are too anxious and too self-promoting to nurture.
