- Harry Dean Stanton is one of the all-time great character actors in American film. Today, he celebrates his 91st birthday with the release of his film Lucky. It’s his first starring role since Paris, Texas in 1984. In fact, he has been a supporting actor in every film appearance except for these two. Fans have seen him featured in Twin Peaks this summer, and his director pal David Lynch also co-stars with him in Lucky.
But true die-hard cinephiles and movie buffs recognize Stanton from many wonderful and offbeat films from the 70s and 80s. He’s one of the most prolific cult movie actors, appearing in Escape From New York, Red Dawn and Repo Man in the 1980s. He’s worked opposite Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman and Paul Newman, to name a few, all of whom won Oscars and achieved superstardom. But Stanton isn’t bitter about not being as rich and famous as he could be. He turned down opportunities to become a huge star because he just didn’t want to work himself to death.
His legacy is notable enough that he has his own special place in movie history. The late Roger Ebert once wrote than any film that featured Harry Dean Stanton “couldn’t be all bad.” This tribute reinforces that claim and combines interviews with Stanton to reveal a man enamored with Eastern thought and philosophy. "It's all a movie," Stanton says about life in this video essay, "And there you are."
Rest in piece a true American legend.
peace*
Paris, Texas is such a beautiful film
Tyler Smith - I say this so often. I'll say it more often now. 😢
Anytime you hear that Stanton is in a movie, you know that the movie is worth watching.
I loved Alpha Dog. Good movie.
Kelly’s Heroes
One of the lesser known but undeniably vital pillars of American cinema. He may never have reached the level of mainstream recognition as some of his peers but his career was so incredible, working with some of the most important directors of all time and spanning effortlessly across various genres with impeccable range. We may never see an actor of his caliber again.
I have seen Harry Dean Stanton in movies for years. Never knew he could sing like that. Wonderful!
Same! I’d love to have seen him sing in concert! But it’s great to see how well he sings in his movies & on David Letterman while wearing a camouflage jacket! Beautiful!
Paris Texas... greatest movie ever filmed, greatest performance by an actor.
Fun fact: Kurt Cobain said this was his favorite movie in an interview
His performance in paris texas is not only one of the best of the 80's but ever
What a nice man. I met him once and never forgot that moment.
How fortunate you are!
You were a true artist. Rest in peace, Harry
Awards don't mean much to him. He is detached from such trivial and ephemeral an temporal things. When he leaves, he will take with him much of the credibility Hollywood has ever had.
Crazy, he left not too long after this post. Rip
Had to respond to this one comment, it's my opinion that awards mean next to nothing.
Symbolism.
For OUR benefit.
However, there is more to that game than the masses are aware of, he knew it because he was IN it.
If I had a open and responsive audience, the stuff I could lay down through 4 decades with 6 of his films...would far exceed coincidence.
I've tried.
People don't care.
I learn more each day.
When it's time, I will tell.
tearing up watching this
Almost...almost...still holding (I'm at work, cant cry here )
Harry Dean Stanton, one of the best character actor's that ever lived. The fact he never ever received an award for his acting is a travesty. When Harry was in a scene he often stole it, he was that good, yet never received the recognition he so richly deserved. Shame on you Hollywood.
Damn, Harry Dean was such a legend. He'll be missed.
Best of the best.
I've seen him in so many movies and never realized how much space he takes up as a secondary character. I decided to look him up since I needed to know who sang in Cool Hand Luke... wow! What a great actor.
Harry Dean also taught Paul Newman to play banjo for Cool Hand Luke!
I met him 2 weeks before he died at USC. I'm from Kentucky. It meant everything.
he could sing to me forever.
fought with everyone to cast him for a lead once.
Do tell!!
The ending of this nearly brought a tear to my eye. Thank you Harry Dean, there YOU are, and we love you
I'm young, and I have never seen this man before I watched lucky...his last film I guess(rip) ...and it was beautiful, I could tell he wasn't "playing a character", it simply felt real, perhaps that was the most real film I have watched
they say that you shine the most at your last moment and that couldn't be more true in this case
GOAT, truly. RIP you incredible man.
Hi. I just wanted to know the meaning of the term G.O.A.T.
Thanks 🙂
@@DavidTorres-nj2ur G.O.A.T = Greatest Of All Time! 😊 (Sorry no one had gotten back to you.)
He reminds me of my Dad. Whom I lost too soon. RIP Harry. Lucky was a masterpiece.
Mr Stanton's brief performance in Twin Peaks S3 was my best part about the show. Tons of love and respect for true craftsmen of the field, such as Mr Stanton.
Vale sir. Thanks for being Harry Dean Stanton, one of the greats. Your uniqueness will always be remembered.
Thanks for putting this up, it's a great tribute to someone real within a very often fabricated industry and art. There is only a small handful, perhaps not even that much, of poet artist over the entire history of American cinema and Stanton was at the top of the list. Any filmmaker that was fortunate enough to have Harry say yes to participating in their film found themselves, so it seems, with base material, the raw ore, of what makes us human and longing, and when they were smart, knew not to try to fashion it, but let the movie fashion around him in some way. Even as a supporting actor. He was "Such stuff as dreams are made on."
Repo Man, Alien, Red Dawn, the list goes on and on for me. It’s almost a game seeing what movies he pops up, and he’s always a hidden highlight. May he rest in peace.
😢😢 I miss him ! GREAT ACTOR❤
I agree there's something very peculiar and unique about his energy as an actor. The 'pessimism and world weariness' I can see easily being an influence of growing up in rural kentucky. I've known a lot of people with that same story written on their faces--some of them manifesting intense nihilism and self destruction; others manifesting unflappable optimism and faith. On the one hand they appear to be crushed souls, but on the other hand they possess a depth beneath the surface and a powerful soulfulness.
Taking a break at popular driving range in The San Fernando Valley, I would sit and chat with Harry DeanStanton. What a pleasant gentleman he was. I looked forward to the many interesting chats wherein he offered so much in knowledge and conversation. Harry was the Good Guy rarely seen on screen. Roman.
Man I really liked this guy since I was a kid. I hope he gets a posthumous Oscar nod for Lucky. RIP Harry
Narrated in the great Harry Dean Stanton way. What an original tribute. Brilliant work, Pill.
Rest In Peace Dear One...
Wow he really has worked with a lot of amazing directors

What an absolutley fantastic presentation. Thank you so much for this.
I’ve never heard of this man and just recently found out he died. Already I want to mourn for him and watch all his movies. Which I’m definitely gonna do.
Why Fandor is the GOAT youtube channel
He lived a truly awesome life, rest in peace sir
Nomatter the film or the size of the role, Harry Dean Stanton made it relatable.
Just re-watched Big Love this week and he is by far the best character in that show. Always remember him in Alien, one of the first movies and characters from a movie I can remember watching as a kid, right along with RoboCop.
And he even made it into MCU no less. Just a little cherry on the top of an excellent career.
Man was the game.
Rest In Peace
This video will blow up for sure.
Hope so. It's a beautiful thing.
His death in Alien was terrifying
Although I love all his work but that Repo man character and the whole movie was hell of an experience for me. Definitely my top 5 of all time.
He is so missed these days and forever more.
Aloha...He was one of my favorite actors ever...he is deeply missed. Recently , I did my family tree and found that he was distant cousin. He never disappointed in any film he played in...Paris , Texas was the best and I agree with him on his best role.

If once they make a film about their life there is no doubt that the ideal actor Matthew Mcconaughey. They are equal.
Harry Dean singing 'Every time I go to town the boys start kicking my dog around' in Kelly's Heroes is one of my favorite scenes in a movie.
He was ninety years old when he got the Harry Dean Stanton award. Just shows if you stick around and keep pluggin away at it...
