OH MY GOSH THE SPRIG OF MILLET
I know this is an old video, but I'm so glad I watched it. My eclectus will ONLY train for millet (she will straight up spit out the other nuts and seeds I've offered her), and I've been holding out a giant sprig of millet to her rather than breaking off small pieces like I had initially. No wonder she's getting pissed off mid-training session. It never occurred to me that I may be inadvertently rewarding and punishing her at the same time.
Thankfully, she's been super tolerant of my mistakes thus far.

Girl, you are underrated! You can't even imagine how helpful your channel is! I have two budgies. Blueberry and lemon. Blueberry became tame within 2-3 days, but lemon isn't tame even after 2-3 YEARS! What do you think I should do...? Will he never be tamed? Anyway, still you have helped me a lot. Try taming him in baby steps and respect his boundaries. Maybe you don't even realize that you are moving too fast because you compare him to your already tame budgie. I had a similar problem with my bunnies. My male one would let me pet him but the female one would always run away and I didn't know why, I just thought she was wild and pretty much untameable. Sadly it took my male one to die and me getting her a new partner until I realized that I can tame her, I just need to respect her boundaries and respect that she just doesn't like to be touched. Now she is pretty tame, won't run away and will eat out of my hand, as long as I respect her and don't touch her too much. I know that bunnies and birds are not the same, but watching flock talks videos made me realize how similar these two pray animals work, so maybe that can help you as well. :)

Faisa Parveen Ali no we got her from somebody who didn’t want her anymore along with a male budgie and a few other females (deceased) then she killed the male she’s always been like this and I can’t find a way to change her because every time I try training she gets lost or flies away and hurts herself

Same I had cockatiel's and finches as a teen and now I have my first parrotlet I got him from a petstore he was injured and the girl working in the store with them basically told us she didn't like birds much was scared of them i fell in love so did my daughter and I had to have him he was not happy there but I've had him for months almost a year and he is still not wanting to be tamed i am the only one who can put my hand in his cage and sometimes he still attacks me the girl in the store was rough with him when she got him out he is missing a toe he loves it when i give him scratches but the only other people who can even get near the cage are my daughter's who look like me my step daughter can't even so its a long road with him but it's better than where he was

Part 2 please! Do you have any recommendations for when a bird is too fearful to take a small seed directly from your fingers? My budgies will nibble off a chunk of millet or avicake but they won't take a small seed from my fingers even when it's clear they see it.

Serve the treat in a little dish?
You might try what I did with mine: Every time I was giving them the chunk of millet, I was offering smaller and smaller chunk (so they had to eat it closer to my hand). Then, I started to "hide" it behind my fingers, so they had to reach out over my fingers to eat it. After some time, they where so comfortable eating it with my fingers around them, that I could give them one single seed from between my fingers... Hope you can do it too. Just take very small steps! Good luck!
The sunflower trick was SO HELPFUL. That was exactly what I was needing to train my birbs bc they used to get distracted while eating the seed. THANK YOU.

I've never heard of the millet thing. I do it all the time and my birds are just fine with it. If anything it makes them more excited because they see how much there is and it prompts them to continue doing it to get more and more. That's really interesting to hear though! You learn something new everyday and every bird is different. I'm getting two parrotlets soon and hey! Maybe that method of training would frustrate them. I guess it just depends on the bird individually.

Your videos are just too good. After watching your video I tried to train my budgie to play dead and for that I wanted her to get on flat surface for which she is extremely scared of. I ended up with all mess and she lose trust in me. I will try to build up the trust again. Pls make some video how to teach bird come on the flat surface other than perch. Thanks ❤
So I made this training tool - stuck a targeting stick to my clicker (so I can point and click with one hand easily), and stuck a wooden bead to the end of the stick (so my bird doesn't accidentally poke his eye out on it), and it has been amazingly helpful, and I can convey and he can understand so much better! :)

Ok I love your videos I just started watching them as I just got a bird a couple of weeks ago. He's a bitter. He has a bit of an attitude towards hands. Probably because of his wings being clipped. I think the other ownership kept them clipped.
I'm trying to just go slowly with him . Is there anything you know could help with biting? I really think it's just going to take patience and time.

How do you manage the treats? Are you keeping individual millet seeds in your palm then moving them to your fingers one at a time? I'm working with my new baby lovebird and it takes her 5 minutes to eat a tiny fraction of a shelled sunflower. She isn't really motivated by any food/nuts so far, but maybe millet will work. :( It's frustrating because I've clicker trained our dog and I'm so excited to get started with Lucy (9 weeks old.)

Where do you get those toys that are hanging up... I’m trying to find some to hang from my ceiling so my birds could have things to perch on while their out of their cage( I have four bugies). Also do you have a training video on how to get your birds used to a harness, and how to get them used to you putting it on them?

Had two questions -
1) How do you know when to transition to 1 rep = 1 treat, to 2 or 3 reps = 1 treat? I see you have Newt go to about for different locations with his target before giving him a treat (I’m assuming you gave it to him after the clip cut).
2) This might be a whole video on its own, but for a bird whose wings were clipped when they were little and don’t really know or aren’t confident in how to fly, how do you START that process? Like to literally get the first leap? What are the baby steps to take until you get that first little jump? I really want my bird to know he can fly freely indoors, but when I first got him his wings were clipped and nowadays he only flies when something startles him.

I made a personalized mix of treats for my parrot (panic, sunflower and base feed) I use a small glass to give it to him, am I wrong? Is the speech made (4:16) also valid for this?

Great topic and good information. Like the blooper! I’m going to try the clicker game! How do u have a little seed available for them to get when my fingers r so much bigger? Typically I lick my finger, dip it into a bag of chia seeds and then offer it to my Parrotlet. For a bite and then pull away. So I’m realizing I’ve made that big mistake! How r u grabbing the tiny seed?
also make sure they can see you when you fill their bowls . so they know you are their provider and not some ghost

I was wondering if you're having trouble finding oat spray in stores? You recommended oat spray for foraging in an old video and my birds LOVE it but I can't seem to find any lately in stores or online

It’s sometimes hiding in the small animal section instead of the bird section! I’d give there a good check if you haven’t yet!
Flock-Talk I actually have been looking in the small animal section; I’ve been checking stores like petsmart and petco as well as bird stores; even online everywhere; I just can’t seem to find oat spray. It seems sold out everywhere and no one is restocking near me (NY/NJ) Have you ever ordered any online?
I haven’t but I don’t see why not, Petco does have it listed on their website as well as petsmart so asking the company to special order might be an option as well to avoid shipping costs

my budgie has a respiratory infection and im giving her antibiotics right now, i havent taught her much because ive only had her a few months and shes pretty skiddish. she’s kind of afraid of my hands right now because i have to give the medicine to her through a syringe jn her mouth, so is it okay to pause on training until the antibiotics done? (a little over a week)
that's what happened when my budgie got scaly face mites! I had to grab him to treat him and he became super scared of me, before that he was really tame!

Hi guys! One question I've always had about training, how old should a bird be to start? I just got a new baby cockatiel who is 9 weeks old now. Should I start now for clicker training? Or would it be beneficial to wait for her to be older?
hiya! i started training my tiel around that age :) he knows plenty of tricks now and i think it is fine to start at that age!! it’ll stick with him better if he’s younger~ hope this helps!
Hello. A breeder had sold me my lovebird at 40 days old, and I started training almost immediately. As soon as he began eating the next day, I found out what his favorite treat was and used it for clicker training. He was recalling by day 4. He's four months old now and is doing wonderfully.
Side Note: I would teach your bird to step up before recalling. Even though my buddy Evo was recalling within a week, he didn't know how to step up. It was frustrating for me, having to teach him backwards.
I’d love to see more of this! I’m too afraid of improperly correcting some of my birds’ beahviours, but thanks to this video I might give it a try!

You need to test the bird to see what's it favorite.
What you use for treat them? Mine won't take anything from me, not sunflower or any other seeds or fruits.... Mine are in fact all picky eaters.
Can I train two times a day? After 8 hours?

I’m not sure what treats to use, I don’t want to give him something he’s not supposed to have...
Also, whenever I DO give him a treat, he gets overly excited and bites my fingers trying to get the treat.

How many training sessions can my parrotlet have in one day? I train her for 10-15 mins at different times in the day
10-15minutes is actually the same attention span as me.
A part two would be very helpful. I do not understand how you are gesturing with empty hands and then suddenly have a treat between your fingers. Editing? Where are you keeping you store of treats? The video as a whole seems to be helpful. I won't know for certain until my young hand feed cockatiel arrives in a couple of weeks. This raises an additional question: is there a minimum age at which you start training a bird...of course not until the bird is comfortable in their new home.
not sure about the other questions,, it might be editing but she has a little pouch made for dog training that you can clip onto your clothes that she uses

George Mohr she has a video called “my training gear” wear she talks about everything she uses for training if that helps :)
I think she either keeps them in her pocket or has a little fanny pack filled with them

Hey! My lovebird only likes spray millet, but my fingers are too fat to pick out individual seeds :( I don't know what to do
I usually pick out the millet little balls and let him take a bite, but he takes the biggest bites
Often millet will stick to your finger if you just press it in to a small pile, you could separate the seeds outside of the session (just squeeze and roll the ball between your fingers to get the seeds to fall off) the. Dip your finger in to the pile capture a couple of seeds and present them that way!
If you’re fine with the session taking a bit longer due to the time between eating and repeating the behaviour they can have the large bite it certainly isn’t the end of the world to do so. I would try to conceal the ball of seeds in your fingers so they don’t fully see how much they’re missing out on to reduce that frustration though!
@@FlockTalk yes! I try to conceal it, my problem is that the millet runs out too fast and I don't want him eating so much millet, so I have to do random rewarding, but when he is learning a new trick that doesn't work. I will try to do what you've suggested 💕
That video was very helpful but I was following your tutorial on how to train a bird to lay in your hand, my bird has successfully learnt the trick but won't let go of my finger what should I do????
Generally holding on that tight suggests there’s still some discomfort with the behaviour, I would slow down the training and see if there’s a point where the bird presents any discomfort and work on that.
If there’s no fear you could gently twist your finger and immediately reward when the feet loosen to adjust their grip, we don’t want to pry the toes off or take our hand away since it is a comfort thing for them. Always allow the option for the finger to be grabbed until you’re confident that they’re comfortable with their feet released. Gradually they’ll connect that releasing the feet is what’s earning rewards and you should be able to shape the behaviour from there!
@@FlockTalk OK thank you but the weird thing is when I pick my bird up and flip him on his back he stays completely still without needing to hold on to anything until I say good bird or reward him

Point 3 makes so much sense now. I was trying to teach my budgie to pick up. And she did great but everytime I took the millet back after she had some she would follow it all the way until it was behind my back! I feel so bad now! I think I’ll go over to sunflower seeds although she never had it so I’m not sure if she will like that. Thank you so much
How often can you train in one day? If training is only for 5 minutes. Is 5mins per day?
Usually training can be done two times a day once in a morning and once in the evening for 5 minutes

I have a 13 day old baby budgie and he is too young to train yet but I hand feed him and I want to create a huge bond with my bird. Where should I start? I want to harness train and for him to not be scared of me like petting him and holding him and stuff like that.
Help!!! The last time I had budgies was around 35 years ago. At that time I'd had them hand trained and got them to fly to my finger on call.
Flash forward to today. About 8 weeks ago I bought 4 of them (don't ask why 4. That's another story). They have free reign to my bedroom, master bath and closet. From 7:30ish a.m. to 3:45ish p.m., with a few quiet spurts, it's sheer bedlam (I love it.) 3:45ish they fly to the cage to perch for the night. I tried training them. Like I said, I've done it before but with 4 little maniacs flying around it was hard to get their attention. Finally I gave up. But, earlier today, I had an idea. Try training them when they've mellowed out like just as they're settling in for the evening. So, about 1 hour ago, I waited 'til they've all fed, then I came into the cage with a 6" long branch (real one) and slowly brought the end of the branch to just where their leg meets their body and gently pushed up. After several tries and a little chasing him through the cage, I got him to sit on the branch for a few seconds.
I THINK that's the way to go but I know very little about training birds; especially 4 at once. I should have gotten one, bonded with it then introduced the rest one by one.
Anyway, I figure 5 minutes per bird each evening but I've one big problem: How do I reward them once they've done good? They won't let me get my hands near them. That's why I'm starting with the branch. I figure advance from the branch to the finger over time.
So. Please. Any help is appreciated.
