    Really helpful videos. My rescue parrotlet doesn't really know/like veggies so starting him on sprouted seeds and keep trying to introduce others. A bit harder to get out for some of these things right now but trying my best. TBH, when I brave a shop, most veggies I buy are for him

      I encourage my cockatiel to try new foods by pretending to eat them myself (or actually eating them if I can) and saying "om nom nom nom" and making pleasurable noises like I'm really enjoying it. Then whatever I have he's willing to try it at least once. You are your bird's flock, and if they see a flock member enjoying something, naturally they want some of it too.

    I just made chop for my birds last night and it took me forever because I couldn’t figure out how to use the food processor we just got 😂 My parrotlet loved it and so did the conures, but my cockatiel would not touch it. I just watched this and made a very similar chop for our 3-4 month old Pacific Parrolet Luna. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, they really are so helpful.
    Luna is still getting used to different foods so she hasn't really dug into it yet. She has been doing this interesting thing for over a week now where it looks like she is scratching her tongue on the edge of her top beak. I haven't been able to find anything online directly related to this behavior, have any of you had experience with it? To me, it reminds me of when you have a canker sore or bite your tongue and you get a bump and it drives you crazy but you can't refrain from touching it against your teeth or with your tongue. It also kind of looks like maybe her beak is sharp or not evenly ground and maybe that is what is bugging her. Again, I'm not sure if this is what she's doing, or what it means. I can send a video if it would help anyone diagnosis this.

    • @prosesroses
      @prosesroses 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tanner Gittins does she have chewable (soft wood, woven straw, even popsicle sticks) toys to file the tip? You could also visit a vet and they might recommend trimming her beak if that’s the issue but she’s very young. As for veggie, chop broccoli fine or grated carrots (worked to introduce my cockatiels to veggies). Also mix seeds into chop and or sprinkle on top (lightly press) so they see it’s there, I like using chia seeds.

      prosesroses thank you for your response! Yes she has lots of chew toys. Straw, rope, cuttlebone, etc. and she loves them! She chews them a lot. I’ve had some private messages and I’m hearing that it’s actually pretty common. I posted a video of the behavior on my channel. Thanks again!

      They tolerate one another, newt is a very good boy with respecting Mia’s body language and Mia is a particularly lenient parrotlet. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend mixing a parrotlet with multiple different birds unless you have the space to potentially separate them completely (and divide your time). It’s far more likely for a parrotlet to want to have its own space than it is for them to want to share. Parrotlets are not particularly social birds, some can get along, but it’s really unlikely with the species.

    Hello my friend
    Thank You for all of the excellent instructional videos you have produced. They are so informative, very well done. and nicely presented. The chop recipe is filled with great ideas for a healthy diet. I've learned a lot from your hard work.
    May I kindly offer to you just a single observation on your videos. The audio portion - your voice comes through very tinny especially in your large birdy room, not so much in the kitchen prep area but still noticeable.
    Please know that I am not a sound expert but before writing, I've checked the videos on several of my devices including the tv and it is consistent as described, sort of like an echo feedback. Perhaps you might try a head microphone speaking right into it possibly eliminating the large room reverberation, I really don't know but I'm sure you'll figure it out.
    Thank You Again for all of the hard work and great information you share with your large flock of birdy lovers.

    • @FlockTalk
      @FlockTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally it’s fine to add a cuttlebone for them to munch on whenever they’d like, it’s very hard to overdose a bird on calcium because they need so much of it. You can see physical signs of deficiency through their feather and beak quality, (dryness, flakiness, weakness) otherwise your avian veterinarian can tell you if they need more through blood work!

    Do you have to feed your birds pellets? I checked my local pet shop and they didn’t have any good quality pellets I was thinking of doing mainly chop and some seeds. Btw I currently don’t have any birds but am planning to get a few budgies

      Pet shops only have the easy and cheap options you can find good pellets online though, please dont give them only seeds😭

      It's been 2 years since you posted this so i dont know how relevant this is for you now, but I've been trying to find authentic research papers on bird diets and so far, the ones heavily supporting pellets and completely villianising seeds are either funded by companies producing pellets, or written by them directly. I do recommend looking into this further and not give up on seeds, they are literally what birds eat naturally. There are healthy seeds, and less nutritious seeds. Just ensure you're giving them a higher portion of healthy ones.
      Sadly, all the arguments against seeds provide points that are directly applied to pellets as well. I hope one day "research" will be unbiased and not just a means of expanding business, at the expense of health and wellbeing of our animals.

      @@ummii586 do you freeze and then let it thaw each morning before giving it to them? Or thaw in the fridge overnight? I have a parrotlet and she eats so little that I’m not sure how to make the chop last/ if it’s even worth making chop at all. Thanks!

      Try to introduce red fruits to them slowly, put some little pisces in their usual food( not too often, 3-4 times a week is ok I think, use it more as a treat)

      Maybe try putting less since you want more greens then other colours! :) Also they might just end up eating only carrots so yeah just put less carrot then greens. Figure out a good ratio of how much you want of each thing !

    How do you keep fresh the leftover salad? My bird doesn't like leafy greens. I always waste a lot and leafy greens one cannot freeze.

    • @FlockTalk
      @FlockTalk  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I freeze chopped veggies if I have more than will keep in the fridge and then serve select pieces as completely fresh which are usually foods that the humans will eat before it goes off. For lettuce I also just started growing my own so you can harvest small bird doses from it without it going bad.

    • @susannemichelsen8879
      @susannemichelsen8879 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @FlockTalk I made a beautiful chop which included bokchoy. I put it in the freezer, and after thawing, it wilted in minutes. I made collard greens and Radicchio with corn, apples, and cauliflower. He didn't even look at it. It's very frustrating. I have been trying for months. I can never manage to make a small batch. That's why I like your cup/spoon idea. 😊

    • @FlockTalk
      @FlockTalk  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah the greens will almost always wilt when frozen, I still add them in to the mix but just keep some whole greens in the fridge that I take a piece off of each morning so they get the fresh crunch. Storing them with the base in water helps them stay longer, ultimately some will still end up wasted unless the people eat it though!
      Aside from growing it fresh I really haven’t found a good way to keep the leaves crispy for a long time!

    • @susannemichelsen8879
      @susannemichelsen8879 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @FlockTalk In the morning I don't have time and he doesn't like leafy greens or greens in general. It is even a waste buying lettuce or spinach or kale. I am assuming he never got introduced to these foods as a Baby bird and 2 years of his life. He like Crunchy stuff and my baked bird cookies. Maybe I will hide more veggies in there. 😊

    • @FlockTalk
      @FlockTalk  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe! Some birds do just take a lot of time and finessing to try new foods! I’ve spent two entire years convincing a bird to try a new food before. Sometimes they just need the excessive time!

    You could use spinach for the calcium instead of the crunchy cuttle bone.

    • @FlockTalk
      @FlockTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spinach isn’t a great source of calcium because of how much oxalate it contains! Oxalate binds to calcium which makes it unavailable for the body to absorb!

    • @kermitthefrog459
      @kermitthefrog459 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on how long you stay away from home. Cockatiels love to be the center of all the attention. Make sure you have a big cage with a lot of toys so your cockatiel won’t be bored when you are away. And when you are home, spend as much time with your cockatiel as possible. But no, it won’t be a problem, as long as you give your cockatiel the attention it deserves. Having a big cage is really important btw, you need to make sure your cage is big and it has a lot of toys in it.

      Hi, I would contact a vet if it seems to be hurting him. If you just cut off his nail, it should grow back fine! I’m not a super expert and have only had my two birds for 2 years so am still learning, but if it is a nail it should grow back just fine! :)
