- This week’s video is quite different than normal but it's an amazing bull elk hunt in Arizona. I had the opportunity to go bull elk hunting with A3 Outfitters, Ryan Carter with DC Outfitters, and JJ who had the AZ Governor/Commissioner's bull elk tag for the 2020-2021 season. JJ came to hunt Arizona in search of a giant bull elk and it just happens to be the big bull elk from one of my Stealthcam trail cameras. A3 put in a lot of time and effort watching this huge bull elk and keeping tabs on him before the opening day of the elk hunt. An inside look into these "Trophy" outfitted hunts and how they happen. I'm not a fan of an Army putting a bull to bed and claiming the bull, visiting camps to let others know that's THEIR Bull, taking 1000 yard shots with your Gunwerks product, etc. The whole Governor's tag scenario breeds this type of money hunt. I think those tags help the state in the long run but not enough to compromise any part of fair chase. I understand you had a tough situation on your hands and you made the best of a bad situation. I just came back from a 10 day archery bow hunt and brought a modest buck out in my pack. I have to believe that my hunt means more to me than that hunt meant to anyone who participated in the HUNT of that magnificent animal. Ryan is one of the hardest working outfitters and deserves to make a living from his efforts but I don't have to like that process. I respect you and like your channel a lot. I just found this episode tough to watch.
I couldn’t watch the whole video. Sad for Trent and every other hunter that knew that bull was around and drew that unit hoping to see him this year.

I hate the part that they just sit there and watch the bull suffer a true hunter would shoot and make the suffering stop. But then again it’s a typical trophy guide making thousands of dollars.
Agreed.. in my opinion that bull was robbed of all his greatness...he survived season after season, out smarting hunters sason after.season, just to be shot by someone who admits he's not a hunter..... it was hard for me to watch as well.. oh well... thats the way she goes...!!

Yeah, I read about that. Not sure how that all works. I wanted to ask him about his side of it. Probably just like the ROC with shitty contractors that lose their licenses, only to be back the very next week with a new business name and a new license number.
I read a comment he made on someone's Facebook page that he didn't do it on purpose he just didn't know they had crossed over to the reservation. Years ago I might have believed him but with today's technology there is no way anyway thanks for the videos you post!

We may not have bulls like this without people paying for it. I think JJ has spent over a million dollars in Governor tags and all of that money gets matched, I think even doubled, by the feds.

We spend nearly every weekend outdoors and we see the lack of investment and effort to maintain and support our az game. Especially with the lack of rain you would think they would at least bring some water to these tanks. Nope.
You think they would try to keep some of the donkeys and cattle out of some of the forest to help our deer and elk out. Nope.
Maybe work with USFS on Mitigating the damage from forest fires. Nope.
Only time you even see them is the week before season starts up here then you never see them again.
What do they do other than sell tags?

Wow! That was one of the hardest vids I have ever watched. There was nothing in there I would want to see again. In my mind Trent you and that bull were robbed. The story you told is absolutely unbelievable. As mentioned by others in these comments you sir are a better man than we. To have put in the work and be relegated to filmer/observer had to be tough on you. I will subscribe to your channel in hopes of one day bei g able to watch you take a bull better than that one. Wow! First one to show him the picture gets hired as the outfitter/guide service. Then he shows up the night before the hunt, goes to bed, shows up to pull a trigger and then flies back the next day. I don't begrudge guys for wanting to make money, but this was just sad to watch in my opinion. I get that he is a billionaire and can do pretty much whatever he wants, but his ONLY contribution to this hunt was his index finger muscle. I have been on guided elk hunts that were nothing like this so I can tell the difference...
Yep... all these rich guides, outfitters and wealthy landowners are destroying what hunting is, should be or at least used to be...
I thought that this was a hunting video. Hunting isn't walking up to where your guide spotted the animal, setting up your rifle and taking a shot. This is nothing more than a marksmanship exercise. When a gaggle of dudes can talk loudly without the animal hearing it's not a hunt. May as well go to the zoo.

All respect to rogue outdoors ,But this was just plain disgraceful, and this is coming from a 70 year old man who has killed over 35 elk. Everything in this hunt was wrong and done for the wrong reasons but what finally pushed me over the brink was how long the animal suffered and how long they sat their on their pompas asses while the bull lay their ungutted and no thought or word of how and what to do with the meat! this IMO is what TV hunting has done to hunting, archery included as well as muzzle loaders Hi tech and money GREED! people we have lost our way and when you do things like this just for the glory it is indeed a sad sad image that must come back to you when you look in the mirror!

@@cockadoodledayum7156 I got another one this year but it is getting tougher, the pack this year was really hard.... Bit it was skinned quartered and out of the woods fast the meat is first priority, pictures and hand shakes do not feed your family.
I realize many people didn’t watch to the end. @ 27 min it becomes a little more tolerable. Thankfully JJ does do a lot for hunting and conservation and he admits that he isn’t a hunter. For those who hated this video check out what he says at 27 min mark. With that said it’s still a bummer. Glad you shared this with us. Such is life.
I know you have heard this multiple times in the comments, but man this hurts to watch... the hardwork you put in, the fact that you had opportunities coming up this very year to potentially chase this bull is heartbreaking. Big game hunting is turning in to killing for sport. Change is tough. It pulls at everything we’ve known for so long. Hunting with friends and family is what is still pure and what draws people to hunting. 25-30 people on this hunt was a sad sight. Everything was about score and recognition. Not about the excitement of the hunt and the pure joy of being in the outdoors. Great video and man it just hurt to think about what you were going through watching this all play out.

Disgusting. Unethical outfitter behavior trying to bully everyone away from their target. Cant call this a hunt, he shot the animal from 1000 yards away, put no work into it except killing the bull. Trent definitely deserved the bull since he was putting in the work.

It honestly makes me sick we got people like this that honestly care more about the rack then making a quick follow up shot to put the bull down . This video is pitiful. Coming from someone who lives in Colorado and lives for elk hunting. “Don’t shoot, you might hit a horn”. This is the kind of thing that causes non-hunters to become anti-hunters.
Born and raised Colorado elk hunter here as well.. 230 acres of private land in unit 85. Its very tough to watch this type of shit...

It took some big guys being honest about how you thought of running the bull off and risking alot of hat comments toward you channel. I think that shows your a pretty honest dude! Guide's are defenetly just another challenge for us everyday hunters to get around to harvest that bull of a life time. I do think they should have paid you some money "Lord knows they made a chunk" I've been offered up to $10k before just to let them know the location (and assuming they harvest the animal). I turned them down just cause I don't agree with the people that are not true hunters and hire guides. But I also know we have to put up with them so why fight it. Sounds like you knew they had you painted into a corner....... and better to make new friend's. The enemy thing never works out.
I see no issues with paid hunters. Very difficult to be successful as a out of state hunter. Thier time is limited and hunting out of state is not cheap,, even more so with an outfitter. Locals can put more time into the hunt and into scouting during the year. The issue is not the hunters, but how the guides and outfitters treat the locals. Issues seem to arrise when there's money to be made.
As a archery hunter for 25 years. This is not hunting. This is disgusting and very sad. This is why honest hunters get the bad name. SICKENING!!
These big guide services watch channels like yours and take the information about large bulls and bucks. Not to far off from taking your sims card from your cameras. If you ever find another bull like this keep it to yourself and show us after you kill him.
Moneyandtime Freedom 😂 I thought about starting the first Internet guide service, we would have no guides in the field, we let everyone else do the work and preseason scouting, and just pay people to send in pics for the biggest animals and info. Keeps overhead costs down, we don’t own any cameras, or use our vehicles. Then just sub out the guides during the hunts.
960 yards is not hunting....that's target shooting.

It's not hard to shoot a thousand yards now......I'd rather be closer and know I made a clean kill myself. Guy showed up, stroked a check, and pulled a trigger from 1,000 yards. I bet he's going to tell the campfire story to his friends about the time he took a world class bull on public land and the hard work he put in.

From one hunter to another I want to thank you. Thank you for reminding us all what true hunting ethics are and to all the negative commentators you all need to read this. You could have blown him out and you didn’t. There was a time where sportsmen were for each other. You had every reason to do the exact opposite of what you did. JJ may not be deserving of a bull like that but none of that matters. He was the hunter that day, not you or anyone else and you did the right thing as painful as it probably was to watch it all play out, you shouldn’t have any regrets over this bull.This should serve as a reminder to all hunters that there is such a thing as hunter etiquette. Many have let their own selfishness corrupt the spirit of hunting. We all get frustrated when someone beats us to a spot, gets an animal we’ve been after or “ruins” a hunt for us but we have to remember they are out there for the same reason we are. In many ways it seems it has gotten worse every year, the intentional things people do now a days that hinder other hunters is sickening. When we are in the elk woods we should be supporting each other the same as you should in all aspects of life. It feels like we are on the verge of losing that unity in society. From one big time die hard elk hunter to another I have to say to you THAT SUCKS!!! but hold your head high, keep the wind in your face and continue to remind us and pass on to hunters what it means to be sportsmen and not be selfish. Good on you. Glad you are getting the replicas, I feel like you deserve an award for doing what you did but you and I both know the reward is being able to be there and hunt. That is a dream bull, you may not get a chance like that again but you never know! Best of luck on the upcoming hunts!! Bulls don’t get that big for a reason. That guy knew how meaningless it was after the kill. Like hiring someone to be your friend. You could see it in his eyes. He'll have the head mounted on the wall, and whenever someone marvels at it, he'll remember that time he hired six hunting buddies to do everything but pull the trigger. Maybe he'll try to hang out with them occasionally, and they'll pretend he's one of them for while, because it might lead to more money.
He will probably make up some heroic story how he climbed over 1000 feet of elevation because he has a heart for hunting some other bs.

Well Trent I don't think I could fit your character and integrity into the bed of my truck and applaud your resolve to document this.
I was impressed that the shooter gave all the credit to the hunters, the outdoorsman that make it possible for people Like JJ to even get outdoors at all. It was obvious that he wasn't physically capable of killing anything in that terrain without a lot of help. Of course he spent a lot of money to get that opportunity. I saw well over a dozen people that benefited from that money. Its what they do to feed their families and clients with deep pockets make that possible. Trent I think you got the best of it. You hunted that bull down, you have all the great trail cam footage, you walked and climbed all the miles they didn't to make that harvest possible. I know the replica set you get isn't the same as the God grown bone, but you should feel a lot of pride every time you look at them. Your attitude and willingness to assist in that harvest was as impressive as that bull. Great episode!

Never ever tell anyone where or when you find big bulls or bucks alive , dead, or just plain sheds. They always talk and then all plans are messed up . If you ask me there should be no such thing as a guide service.
He's so much bigger than I imagined once you can compare him to people around. Probably not a fair situation but it's all about the money. Frankly, Trent, you are a stronger man than me! I remeber as a teenager, hunting Elk with my dad, archery only in Washington state . Hours of hiking, glassing, just trying to find meat for the freezer. I guess the things that stick in my craw about this video are: it pisses me off that the rules apply to every ethical and conscientious sportsman, but the ultra rich can buy their way around the rules. And secondly, no one mentioned made the introduction of 'JJ' to Trent as 'here is the hardest working hunter we know and the guy we stole this bull from for you, JJ' .

Better man than most. To have history with a bull anywhere close to that caliber and have to stand by as someone who bought their hunt I don’t think I could’ve let it go down the way it did. True sportsman don’t hunt with an army they get it done by earning it

SCapache928 no money for me. Just glad I got to film it and be a spectator on a bull like this. Someone else tipped them off about this bull, he saw it while scouting for deer, and told his A3 buddies about it. They were already on this bull when I hiked in to check my cam. My IG posts only helped confirm it was “the bull” to shoot.
This is so sad it just shows that if you have money you can get whatever you want. You put in the time, effort, and work on that bull all on your own... I wish I could have seen you take him home with you!
Just wasn't meant to be I guess. There was no guarantee that we could turn him up later in the year, let alone be the ones to kill him. I think things happen for a reason. There have been some interesting things and coincidences happen to me this year with the channel. Just glad I was able to capture him on trail cam this year to see how much he grew from last year. Hopefully he got to lay some pipe last year and spread his seed around like a commercial fire hose in this area last year with all of his ladies, and we see some future giants come out of here.
@@RogueOutdoorsmen that many guys in that area on a hunt I hope its not ruined for those future bulls you could be hunting. Word of mouth destroys a lot of best kept hunting spots.

I couldn't watch the whole video because the longer I watched the more angry I became. I was taught that you respect the game you harvest and this circus shows no respect at all for the animal.
I know man, this is just bs, I just killed a buck, not from a far distance but I take my time taking a good shot, making sure he doesn’t suffer for long at all. Shooting anything over 500 is just gonna make the animal suffer so much pain. Farthest I’ve shot is 275 which is far but no one should shoot this far. Even with a high caliber, and good shot placement, it’s gonna take a while of suffering for the animal to die. Always respect your game man. It at just pissed me off this rich guy not a hunter could shoot such a beautiful bull which I would walk miles just to see something half the size. All he has to do was break a horses back riding up a mountain, take the shot, and ride the horse down. So disrespectful to hunting
I watched this not long after you put this out and had a negative view of JJ and crew for sure. Today I was listening to the Gritty Bowmen podcast and Brian the host was talking with Ryan Carter who is JJ's guide and it gave me a different view on the 'hunt'. Like many things going on there are always multiple sides to any situation to consider. Thanks for the film!
At least JJ had the class to admit that he is not a hunter and his "dough" alone enabled him to harvest this bull. Fair or not, big money provides big opportunities, but JJ will never know the satisfaction and reward of doing it the hard way like the rest of us do.

It’s just like the people who shoot whitetail in high fence and call it a trophy I live in CO and have elk hunted 4 seasons with nothing to show and worked my ass off at that. 12-20 miles a day. This guy didn’t deserve this bull you absolutely did. Shake it off you will get a bigger one his kids are out there somewhere.

Man I'm really trying to see both sides of this but it's so hard. I understand the money that comes from that tag does great things for conservation but is it worth it? Hell even if you make the tag valid for the entire season and for any zone but limit it the actual open season and weapon open at the time would make more sense all while still raising a lot of money.
I understand the position you were in, definitely a no win situation. Either mess up the hunt, make life long enemies all for nothing when they harvest the bull a week later or watch a once in a lifetime bull be taken out from under you. Props to you for keeping your cool and being level headed.

Yep, lots of mixed emotions out there on these big money hunts. Definitely an advantage over “average joe’s” with shooting the big trophy class animals. As long as the money raised truly goes back into habitat improvements and for the preservation of future hunting, I guess I am on board. Carter made a comment about how these big bulls don’t get killed without a team. Major props to the guys out there doing it all on their own or with their friends, making it happen every year.
@@RogueOutdoorsmen The money goes to the huge bureaucracy the Game and Fish have built over the years just compare their current budget with 10-15 years ago and it's evident. Very little if any gets to the field.

IMO, reading the comments thus far is more "enthralling" than the actual video footage, and I'm truly thankful the hunt got videotaped by RO. Otherwise, we wouldn't have anything to comment about, negative or positive, would we? Thanks, RO. Takes a "BIG" person to do what you did.
MANY people will watch this video as the years go by. They will live and die ... NEVER having the opportunity to go on an elk hunt. Capturing ANY elk hunt on film is priceless for folks such as this. So ... keep the cameras rolling guys! If some sort of disease such as Covid should decimate the elk population, video's like this will be the treasure of MANY young boy's hearts' as the years pass.

It's a great bull, so I value the animal for what he is. The situation he was taken in is not what most hunters prefer but its what money buys now days. Good for you guys to have located the bull and have a plan but sometime things do not go a planned. To me something that is worked for is more satisfying than something that is "bought" but JJ seemed to understand what he did...no problems here.
This bull was also on my cameras in Unit 27. Ben watching this and several other decent bulls for months. Unfortunately he wont be there this coming September 11th when we are out there on the early archery hunt. I sure wish I could have had the opportunity to see this bull in person at 50 yards or closer. To the victor go the spoils and to the wealthy. :-)

Fun fact: Jed Larson of A3 was convicted of poaching. He guided a hunter and took him on the apache reservation and illegally took an elk. He was fined but AZ G&F never took his guide license.
I felt for you the whole time through this video! I see where you were coming from that you couldn't just keep pushing the bull. Good on you for taking the route you did, but it was hard for me to watch and I didn't have any skin in the game. I was actually surprised to hear him say he was as gracious as he was for everyone involved in the hunt, but I'll never understand why anyone would want to hunt like that. I could be making millions of dollars a year and I'd still want to be doing it DIY smack dap in the middle of the rut. Making mistakes and having close calls and enjoying every second of it!

I see both sides to the argument on this. At the end of the day you can't hate on man that made life decision to benefit himself and his family. He made wise choices through out life to allow him to be in a position to do something like this. He was fortunate. Not everyone is financially able to do something this and just because the average "Joe" isn't doesn't mean we should hate on man that can. You could of went the other way like you said and pissed off a whole group of people but instead you made the decision you did and I'm sure made a whole group of friends. I commend you, for someone like you who watched this bull as long as you did i'm sure it was tough to watch it unfold but at the same time i'm sure it felt great to be able to get your hands on him as well. This hunt is as much of a success to you as it is to the man who pulled the trigger. You my good sir are a perfect example of what the sportsmanship in hunting is all about. Hunting isn't about Greed its about helping that youth harvest their first animal, helping your dad or anyone else for that matter kill that Bull or Buck of a lifetime. On this day it was about being there for you to watch this man harvest what is probably the bull of his lifetime. I commend you sir! Thank you for sharing this content for us all to share. Am i jealous sure anyone would be for this bull but doesn't mean i hate on the man.
Only thing that rubbed me wrong a bit was watching this animal suffer. He should of at least given the animal enough respect to end his life quickly and painless as possible. The opportunity was there and it wasn't taken. That was the hardest part to watch. As a hunter you owe that at minimum to the game we chase. Are bad shots taken out there yes they are things happen and mistakes are made but in this instance it could of been prevented easily. Long range hunting is hunting regardless and anyone who has taken long range shots knows its as much of a challenge to confidently pull of those shots in the heat of those moments as it is to stalk and gain ground on your prey especially to this magnitude.
Again, Thanks for Sharing! Great Video. But most of all thank you sir for being a sportsman and showing us all how we need to look at each other as hunters!
Great video Trent, I wish you had a chance to harvest that trophy bull. I'm sure those Governor Tags aren't beneficiating their original intended purpose with all the burocracy similar to State Lotteries. I know some States have lottery drawings for some Governor tags. It would be nice if all the Governor tags were lottery with a small non refundable fee to enter so it wouldn't be all about big money. They still could raise the same amount of money if a large number of hunters entered👍🏻

Trent, I have all the respect for you. I enjoy your videos of your shed hunts, knowledge and family. I just spent 3 weeks in 6a checking springs, & waterholes way back. There were commercial blinds left up 2 weeks before the season, trail cameras & salt baiting at nearly every place I hiked into. I am rather repulsed by it all. The commercialization of hunting here is awful. I wish the Game & Fish would make trail cams on public land illegal, at least at waterholes. Animals have a right to drink during a drought. I walked away from a 100” coues because I didn’t feel sitting his water was ethical. I care for you, this negativity is not directed toward you.
This was tough to watch, but I try to put myself in JJ’s shoes. A successful businessman with a desire to shoot a trophy bull. A guy who owns a franchise probably doesn’t have much free time to invest in the chase we all love so much. His substitute for that time, is money.
Although it seems a little cheap to some, he achieved his goal. Which more than likely feels the same to him as it does to the guy who hiked in 5 miles, set up camp, harvested a bull, and packed it out piece by piece.
The guy seemed very grateful for the opportunity. I like to think that had Trent been able to explain his history with the bull directly to JJ instead of the outfitter, the bulls fate may have been a little different.
