    In this beginners tutorial I will show you around the basics of the user interface in Allegorithmic's Substance Painter. The purpose of the video is to make you a little bit more comfortable with the user interface so you can jump in on your own and have some fun.
    I will only cover the very basics but more in depth videos are coming.

    Thank you Mike, for this introduction. I usually get distracted by repetitive questions and words during a presentation, but your use of "OK" helped me focus and confirm understanding of every step in my mind (Just in case you are tempted to change the way you present, due to youtube comments). I think you have a real talent for presentation and content delivery. Thanks again!

    I think it worth mentioning, that Allegorithmic team (developers of Substance) have EXTREMELY detailed and easy to follow series of tutorials for complete begginers on both Substance Painter and Substance Designer, so I highly recommend any beginner to watch them as well. You can find them on official Allegorithmic channel.
    Some tutorials may seem out of date, but they really aren't, because developers tend to keep interface & features consistent throught updates.
    P.S. They also always cover almost every new feature/workflow trick as they develop the substance, so it's very useful to follow, to get better ideas of upcoming updates.

    So if a mesh is just a 3d object, and you bring it in, and let's say you use that "texture" you built by adding the layers, with one of them being semi-transparent (translucent?). In my finished game does that mean that crate would be invisible and only those layers visibile? Or does it appear as a mostly gray crate in game with those two paint layers on top of it?

    Great tutorial thanks for putting it together! I've been looking around at a few other programs similar to this one that I would like to try out for the current character i'm working on to get a feel for texturing with more than just Mudbox and Photoshop. I'll for sure end up playing around with the 30-day trial for this one. However, right now i'm just trying to narrow the options down a bit more and would like to know how well this program does when it comes to rendering realistic images of a posed character. I've used programs Keyshot in class and absolutely love them, but they're also way out of my price and while there are often the student versions available I love being able to make mods for games as well. So i'm curious to know how well the renderer in this compares to something like Mental Ray in Maya or the Unreal Engine.

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Well in short when it comes to PBR texturing we are talking MARI, Quixel or Substance painter. Quixel is a photoshop plugin and performs well. MARI is the industry standard but very expensive. My personal favorite is Substance Painter though ( and very affordable )

    Is Substance Painter a program with a similar use like ZBrush? Or they actually have some distinctive features?

    • @MichaelBalchaitis
      @MichaelBalchaitis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zbrush uses Polypainting and does not require you have UVs on your model. Substance Painter requires UV to be on your model before using Substance Painter. Zbrush and Substance painter have similar tools. SP has layers and Smart Materials which is nice. Zbrush has the ability to Paint and Sculpt at the same time which is also nice.

      Yes it is almost as powerful and a fraction of the price! I actually bought the suite for substance designer to make procedural textures but the paint tools looked interesting as well.

    Where do I get the mesh from? I want to design clone armor for battlefront 2 mods.. From where do I take them?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to create it yourself or buy a mesh online ( like on turbosquid )

    Mari vs SP? whats better for Independent VFX Artist & Filmmakers?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SP is a hell of a lot cheaper ( USD 150 ) and supports multiple UV tiles. So clearly SP for an independent. If you are a ( large ) studio I would say MARI

    • @Mrcoolagainbuzy
      @Mrcoolagainbuzy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SP doesn't support multi-tile UVs as far as I know, if it does I am getting it instead of MARI.
