I have a 2013 Sport w/ manual transmission and have the same problem.. I just replaced the valve cover gasket a couple months ago. It was previously replaced by a local mechanic a year prior and I assumed that maybe he didn’t do a good job so I made sure to take my time and do it myself. I currently don’t see any oil seeping out again, but I did have the exact same noises these past few weeks. Oil light flashed on this morning and I added a quart. Sound went away instantly, but now I’m considering getting an oil analysis to figure out what’s really going on inside the motor.
Interesting to hear that. Do you do the oil changes yourself usually? How often do you top off, if at all? I've never had the low oil light come on which is concerning because the time I had it very low, the car didn't even recognize it. In my last video I added a quart as well and that was very low and making the nasty sounds. Are you looking to see if there are metals, fuel, coolant, etc in your oil?
We have the same issues with our 2017 Honda CRV with the 2.4. Honda seems to have really fallen off with the quality of their engines IMO. I switched to a high mileage 5w30 synthetic and it slowed down on consumption.
HI thanks for the video, I have the exact same problem and I see some sedimentation over the alternator and just below exactly like yours. It was 1st noticed by the Honda mechanic while I went for an oil change. I have the same pattern oil leak as yours so do you think it's the valve cover gasket? because I don't see any oil leak in mine the oil is almost the same in between the dots on the dip. Any suggestions? the mechanic is asking 200 juts for diagnostics, thank you
@@VKgunn If you see seepage around the valve cover gasket area there's a good chance it should be replaced. A local mechanic should be able to replace it for $200 or less Dealership wants like $450 just for that
Hey @Striker50_, great video! I have a few ideas that worked for me, that could possibly work for you. Typically, with these 2.4 Earth Dreams I like to bring the oil to the top of the dipstick, which is exactly 5 quarts after an oil change. From lots of knowledge on engines and with this particular engine, a half quart more oil will not hurt it and in fact, the timing chain likes the little bit of extra oil. The timing chains on K24's do not like low oil. Running the engine even at or below the bottom dot for hundreds of miles very much stresses that chain. For those of you, chains do not "stretch," they elongate because the little pins in between each chain link wear, causing the overall length of the chain to be extended, "stretched" chain; more so because of low oil/extended oil changes. I bought the car brand new and have 130,000 miles and does not burn a drop of oil. I change the oil at 50% or 5,000 miles from day one with 5 quarts. At around 80,000 miles, I noticed a little bit of a rear main seal leak. Around 3,000 miles, between 70% and 60% oil life, the level would be a little bit above the halfway point. Technically, this is "good," but the car did not burn a drop before and was always a tiny bit above the top dot after 5,000 miles. I switched to Valvoline High Mileage 0W-20 Full Synthetic and after about 3 or so oil changes, it does not move a centimeter. I still average anywhere between 34-38 mpg with this car for both city and highway driving. It's honestly been a great car. I would do 5,000-mile oil changes and give a high mileage oil a shot. Again, for me, it took about 3 oil changes before no oil loss. Thinking this "swelled" the seal as the leak hasn't returned. It can also swell valve stem seals in case those are starting to wear a bit, causing oil to be burned. I fixed this on a 2002 Toyota Camry that had valve stem seals going bad. Never smoked blue on a cold start again. However, in any "modern" engine, pretty much all manufactures switched to low-tension piston rings. With the older cars having stronger rings, they can "squeeze" out carbon that would typically clog a low-tension ring from people's "poor maintenance" for lack of a better word. And in today's times, you can't blame anyone, we are all busy and for a lot of us, cars are something we don't think much of. We take the built-in maintenance systems really for granted. Short distance driving, lots of cold starts; cold weather driving, extended oil changes, etc., will cause the rings to gum up and eventually burn oil. Frequent oil changes with a good synthetic will be the best cleaning agent, more often than not, slow oil burning or stop it all together. I would not recommend increasing oil viscosity with this engine. The older K-Series you could, but Honda's VTEC system in this car is very complex. I have seen it firsthand on a family member's car cause rattling, ticking, and in one case, a VVT solenoid fault. Now, I think this really is temperature dependent with the higher-grade oil, but imo, not worth the risk. It is important to note though, if the engine got damaged even in the slightest from low oil in any way, there is no fix that will stop oil burning other than a rebuild. In that case, just add oil. The engine will still last a very long time regardless. It's a Honda...
I've had this issue on my 2013 since day One. It burns oil for sure as there are no leaks anywhere. I check it every 2nd fuel fill up. It uses like 1/2 qt every 2500 or so miles. I think all 2.4ltr engines burn oil. I just keep some a couple of quarts in the trunk. This really isn't supposed to be normal but it just turned 180K miles so I don't care too much anymore. Really had no issues with the car other than I increased the battery size to group 24 rather than the original 51. No more dead batteries after doing that. I'll probably move on to Toyota after this. I won't buy anything with a Turbo.
Agreed. Thankfully it's not a big deal. I'm going to see how long I can keep mine. I'm at 155K mi. Thought about buying something else, but insurance is crazy for everyone right now

@@tonycj7860 I guess Honda started using "low tension" piston rings to reduce drag and increase mileage. Really ? how much is that going to increase mileage? .02% ? LOL.
@@billblane7725 It has more to do with EPA regulations. Using 0W-20 gets them that extra .2 MPG. Previously, manufacturers would list different viscosity, based on ambient temperature of where you operated your car. Now, they are required to ONLY recommend the viscosity with which they got their official MPG estimates. With exceptions to performance cars at the track. What I'll often do is look at the owner's manuals of the same cars in other countries. Usually Mexico, since the weather is close enough to where I am. You'll see that they'll often recommend both 0W-20 and 5W-30.
**filter spool valve** change it, that should fix your problem. It should not burn much oil at all. @@Striker50_ it’s the Earth dream engine in general actually many Honda engines not just on the accord Or even earth dreams it is more of a Vvt problem/issue, it’s fine that you replaced the valve cover gasket however, that is not why it is losing oil. @@Striker50_ No problem installing it. Just odd it did not make that clicking sound like I was used too in the past ones.
@@davidwell686 Hmm.. well as long as the screw is on tight it should be good

@@willpage79 There's no way to tell until you drive it for a while. Even so, it's not a big deal. Just add oil every month or 2.

It’s a built in design flaw like the 6th generation Honda transmissions in these earth dreams engines they also vibrate excessively tail pipes are usually super sooty and black in color if you have one go to the rear and observe your tail pipes Honda fans avoid them at all cost
Car is running great at 152k miles a little oil added goes a long way but yup, those are some symptoms
My Honda Civic 1.8 2012 oil consumption is high at 95k miles just barely bedding in. Going to replace pcv valve and then do an engine carbon clean to see if this helps?
You got the rare civic
How much is it burning?
Those are 2 good starts.
No oil seepage you can see?
@@Striker50_ i had an oil change recently before i bought the car and i have put a quart of oil in after 500/600 miles the light came on twice since owning the car of low oil level. When it did come on the car has a quarter on the dipstick. Slight leakage from somewhere the mechanic said but nothing excessive, could be a bad pcv valve so going to change it soon as i can. I use 0w-20 oil which is very thin but honda recommended using the oil on my car but i buy the honda genuine oil
Do you know who did the oil change?
no need to use honda oil since it's all pretty generic stuff for the motor, unless of course your pocketbook allows then go with your preference.
Reason I ask who did it is because sometimes staff overlooks the little details since theyre rushing, or sometimes people change their oil when their engine is cool, or don't add the amount that it says in the owners manual@@weatherwatcher5303
@@Striker50_ my car had an oil change when this car dealer sold me the car, like you said it could have been topped up wrong or not full. Are you meant to change oil when warm? I put 1 quart in recently so will monitor how much the car uses and go from there, was my car a bad bunch if you said it was a rare civic or another reason? What sort of oil brand should i use ? I appreciate your response thanks very much ! :)
@@weatherwatcher5303 Could have been rushed or not checked to make sure level is right. Always good to check or replace fluids when getting a used car since we can catch any issues like thinking fluid is new or improper levels.
Oil like many things expands when heated up so you get a better accurate reading. Now that it's come to your attention, you can monitor it and if it doesn't return, maybe it was the dealer cutting corners, but at least you're becoming aware.
Lol no nothing bad, it's just the 2012 Civic was only made for 1 year before they redesigned it again, it is very random but people complained on the looks. I had the 2013 civic but someone t boned it and totalled it. You'd be surprised with how good Amazon and Costco brand oils are. Reason I bring it up is because dealers love to charge an arm and a leg for everything

Does this happen to all HONDA ACCORD my first honda i own and not impressed next car Toyota for sure
It happens to a lot of cars in general. I noticed that as long as you add oil it is ok
Exactly what year Honda 2.4L & mileage is this?
2013 and 152k currently, but started at around 98k-110k

Have you tried high mileage oil?
I can look into it
do you fix the burning oil problem? can you share how to fix it .thanks..
It's most likely going to be the piston rings or something in that area. A proper fix is probably a lot pricier than just adding a quart of oil every 1-2k miles. Topping it off should stave off any issues
@@Striker50_ someone told me to do this.Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase and in the gas tank. Drive it like you stole it for 400 miles. Then Motor flush for 10 minutes at idle. what do you think ?

@@JesusPerez-nw3vi Nope, it only does it when oil is very low
what is the mileage you started having trouble with burning oil
Probably around 110k miles is when I actually started to notice based on the noise of my original video on this topic
I think that Honda did a stupid thing by puting a plastic valve cover, instead of an aluminum cover.
Contractions at high temperatures are not the same between plastic and metal.
Corporations are all about saving money unfortunately 💰
Do an oil flush and spark plug change . That’s way to low bro I have a 2016 accord sport 180k
i changed spark plugs relatively recently. A flush is a little more work and won't really do much as it's most likely the pistons/ piston rings that are burning oil.
I'll make a video soon changing the spark plugs and I'll show what they look like and such
My 09 Civic seems to be making the same sounds you experienced in the first video, but my engine oil is on max. I dont hear thw noise all thw time either. I can go days or weeks without hearing it, but then it starts while im driving. I hear it more during acceleration, but it remains while stopped. I had a valve cover gasket replaced a while back by the dealer, and an oil change only a month or so ago. I have no idea how to isolate the sound bc it seems to go away after the car cools down.
Interesting. If you park it facing downhill like I did in the first video, does it make the noise?

It should not burn oil. Bad engine
I agree, unfortunately it's quite common and there's no other solution other than keeping a closer eye that I've come across
But what is the ultimate issue here ? Are the rings getting caked up with carbon prematurely ?
Could be the thinner oil being more susceptible to burning off or mixing with fuel and burning off, as well as some loss to seepage through worn out valve cover gasket. Being on top of maintenance can possibly ward off some of this@@tooththrhr
