Same issue, only when I start the car. I don’t mind the noise! Is this something that needs to be replaced soon?? What if I don’t replace it and keep it for a year??? My car is not worth the repairs haha
Great explanation. Very common issue on the K-series engines. Often misdiagnosed as starter not disengaging after starting car. This like you mentioned predominantly happens in cold weather, and VTC actuator losing oil “prime” in the cold weather. TSB was out a few years back.
oh rickie, what you mean is that a bad Vtc actuator looses its oil? that's what is causing the rattle noise often misdiagnosed as bad timIng chain or tensioners... I'm having rattle issues 1/3 of the time when I cold start
Thanks Dave, best Honda videos on yt. I have a 2011 Accord with 120k miles with this issue. The rattle noise became more noticeable a year ago and I have probably driven 15k miles since. Fresh oil helps. I read somewhere that turning the key three times before cranking may help with the noise. Idk why this works but I do it every cold start and it makes the rattle noise less worse or sometimes I don’t even hear anything
turning the key on primes the fuel pump. the engine needs to be turning to pump oil thats why the rattle stops seconds after starting and oil is flowing through the vtc actuator.
I have the same issue with my 2014 Accord. A friend of mine advised me to turn the car electrical power first for few seconds before cranking the engine..it works. Although at times still behaves the same. But i'ts no longer as much as it was before. You guys can try.
@@MrValen214 so to be clear, you turn the key partially so the electric runs, wait a few seconds, then finish turning the key? or do you turn the key to electric, take the key out or bring it back to off, and then fully start?
Well explained video. I have a 08 Accord with the same engine and haven’t experienced this yet. I always keep an eye on my oil level and change it regularly.
I have this issue with my 2018 Honda Fit. Based on your description of the problem for the Accord, I'm betting it's the same issue with my Fit. Thanks for the vid.
@@percykersi. Unfortunately, my Honda dealership kept the car overnight, tested it, and concluded it’s a normal sound for “such an old car.” Obviously, they don’t want to do the repair, but just get me to buy a new HRV. I’m very angry, and will try to find a decent mechanic in our area (Southern Illinois). I want to keep the Fit, since this is the only mechanical issue I’ve had with the car.
@@SubbaReddy-hg8su. See my response in this discussion. I’m prepared to pay the $800-2,000 that it may cost, but the dealership doesn’t want to bother. I’m driving the Fit as little as possible, and using my 2013 CRV.
Getting the right mechanic makes all the difference in the world! Had a Check Engine light (P219A on a 2015 4cyl accord). This guy diagnosed a general code and got it right on the first try. It was the spark plugs, but scanner code doesn’t tell you that. I also did a few other things needed as well, which to my surprise took away the loud rattle at startup! Him nor I wasn’t really expecting that to go away!! He also got me his commercial discount at O’Reillys which saved me huge. Spark plugs NGK Iridium: Originally $24 each. Paid $11. Valve cover gasket: Originally $38. Paid $18. M1 Synthetic 5qt and M1 filter: Originally $64. Paid $40. So a little over $100 in parts which would of been $200, and $140 labor! I went to a shop before calling my mobile guy, and they wanted $550!!! For what? Also they we’re putting a generic synthetic blend! Wouldn’t even let me bring my own oil even if I paid full price! $550, I still can’t figure where that price came from. They charge $180/hr for labor. This is a 1hr job, took my guy 45 minutes and he didn’t have a lift for oil change. So if it’s $180 labor, how did the parts cost $370! Let’s say they charged $270 for labor (1.5hrs) That’s $280 in parts. What a rip off considering that If I paid full price at O’Reilly’s, it was only $200 for highest quality parts.
Just wanted to chime in for others here, I’ve had the rattle for a little over a year now and recently noticed some leaks developing on my rocker cover. I ended up replacing the gasket over the weekend and now every cold start since replacement - no rattle. It was a consistent occurrence before but now it has completely disappeared.
Yes, just the gasket. I don’t understand it either but perhaps something to do with having the right crankcase pressure with a fresh gasket in place to promote better oil circulation on startup.
Great video. Question 08 crv EX-L. Was getting 28 now barely 20 . Light was on when first started after fill up. The code said tps , misfire or bad ecm . Changes out the cat , new plugs new 02 sensor front and back . It's cold and when I turn the key to start I put the key in the second position an I hear a light eww eewwhh noise . Sounds electric strange in the front . No codes just low f,e. The rpms take a while to come down at highway speeds and then the rpms will bounce . Any idea ?? Thank you someone said it could be the tps but I need a whole new throttle body . Thank you
The EBS was making the noise. Code for erg valve. Unplugged the erg valve car running smother now . I'm thinking replace and it will be back to normal fuel economy. Hopefully. Ty to all
That's just pure luck. The valve cover gasket has nothing to do with the VTC actuator rattle. It has to do with the spring inside of it, that can be replaced. That's where to start - but you won't need to replace the entire actuator. Timing chain tensioner also needs to be replaced, as well as working over the locking pin in the actuator to clean it up and remove any burrs/high spots. That locking pin needs to move in and out of the detent freely.
I'm having this issue. My first thought was, "I'll change the VTC actuator!", but it's widely reported that this fix is only temporary and that it goes back to this state within a few months. So I don't want to spend on something that isn't a proper solution. Honda is aware of the issue, but has apparently stated that there's no permanent fix and that it (supposedly) won't hurt/damage the engine. But I'm scared of this affecting the tensioner and timing chain, leading to catastrophic engine failure (and there are some anecdotal reports of this on the web, though who knows, it could be a correlation vs causation thing). The one tip I've found is that moving your key to the second "on" position and holding for a few seconds before cranking helps. So on one hand, I want to do something about it ASAP to safeguard the engine; on the other, I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a solution that doesn't work when Honda claims doesn't actually harm the engine. Not sure what to do.
Having same problems. Actually thought it was starter initially (even bought an oem starter). Was also advised by mechanic not to replace vct actuator as it will happens gain. Have been changing oil regularly and checking level always (no leaks). Grinding noise getting longer then 2 days ago , car throws P300,302,303 and 339 codes, cel on and goes on limp mode. Read online it could be starter or crankshaft pos sensor so replaced starter yesterday but did not clear codes. Now Im waiting for crankshaft pos sensor to be delivered. Hopefully this will clear codes otherwise may have to replace vct actuator and timing chain.
@@soseriousgng Turned out my 08 accord (had 115K miles) is a PZEV, so parts were still covered. Had to pay dealer $600 for labor. So far no more grinding.
Damn! I needed this. Thank you. You solved my issue. Why the Honda repair technicians couldn’t give me this answer??? Beats me. They said it had to do with my pistons.. I swear, it’s a wonder why shop mechanics get a bad rep. Really appreciate this.
My Honda dealer said they didn't know or reproduce what I'm talking about on my 2012 crv a few years ago. I did my own research and it's a common thing, they don't want to address
For our 2018 Honda Fit with the startup rattle from the VCT the simple fix was to change the oil to the blended version from Valvoline. I believe we used the non-blended / non-synth version on the previous change and that is when the rattle started. My bet is that the synth sticks better/longer on the pin and thus it pops into place without issue.
Very well explained. I’ve worked on this engine on my 2.4 Accord and didn’t know exactly what these different solenoids did. I just knew they worked 😀 good video 👍
2014 crv. VTC actuator started making the rattle noise at 55,000 miles. It lasts for 1 sec only on morning startup. I now have 176000 miles . It still makes same noise , only on first startup. Honda technical advisor said leave it alone . I have and hope to get 250,000 miles on this engine . Remember regular oil/filter change and not by some econo-lube place.
Thankyou. 225,000 miles. 1/2 qt every 5000 miles. Still get rattle on cold start. Consider changing PCV valve if burning oil. Cheap and easy diy. Great vehicle , I hope to get 300,000 miles.
I bought my 2012 CRV used in 2015. The first time I changed the oil, it growled on the next cold start and I had never heard it do that before. Did some research online and found out that this is a thing. The oil was new, so I couldn't blame the oil (0-20 syn). But the filter was a fram. I changed the oil again and went with a better oil filter. The growl creeps it's head up every now and again. At one point I spent $500 to have the VTC replaced. The growl eventually comes back. I manage it now by doing oil/filter changes at 50% on the maintenance minder. I feel like the oil filter is the most critical part, with respect to managing this issue. Especially if you have the growl immediately after doing an oil change. Having a filter with a better anti-drain back valve helps with keeping oil on top of the engine on cold starts. I feel like when the weather gets literally cold, that seal on the anti-drain back valve doesn't keep the oil on top of the engine. I also use synthetic blend oil now. Sometimes I think conventional would be better (especially with the 50% oil changes), but conventional oil is getting harder to find. Synthetic oil has that ability to 'creep' through gaps that conventional oil does not have. So I think synthetic oil is more likely to get by a bad anti-drain back valve on a filter on a cold night. I've tried filters made by mobil, purolator and bosch (and I've tried honda filters...I didn't see any advantage in using a honda filter). Mostly I have been buying them on Amazon and I feel like some percentage of stuff I buy on Amazon is either knock off or factory reject. None them stick out as being able to completely solve this problem. The results have been a little bit inconsistent (but better than a fram). My most recent oil change, I used a K&N bought at a local parts store. I'm curious to see how that plays out over the next 4000 miles.
@@fredf.5901 this fall the noise became very frequent. Even started talking to shops about replacing vtc actuator and/or timing belt. Then for the first time I heard of the vtc/vvt oil solenoid. It isn't mentioned in the technical bulletin. I got my hands on a new one and took out the old one. The piston on the old one was already advanced with no power on it which isn't right. So I put in the new solenoid and also replaced the prescreen for the solenoid. Unfortunately I still get the noise but I feel it is not as frequent and is not as loud or as long as before. I wonder if the solenoid being bad damages the actuator. There is always another rabbit hole to go down.
@@fredf.5901 It's gotten more dynamic than that. The noise got real bad this fall. I thought about having the VTC replaced again but then I found out about the VTC/VVT oil solenoid. So I got one of them for about $60 and took the one on the engine out and my oil solenoid was already activated with no power on it which was opposite of the new one. So I installed the new one. I thought the crv idled smoother. The noise still occurred but not as often and I don't think it was as intense. Then I changed the oil solenoid prescreen. The old one wasn't blocked so I didn't think that would make much difference but after that, the frequency of the noise decreased again and had even more reduced intensity/duration. Not sure why or if it was my imagination. The technical bulletin on this issue doesn't even mention the oil solenoid and mine was obviously not working right. Maybe the faulty oil solenoid damages the VTC. If anybody gets the VTC changed, definitely change the oil solenoid. Or change the oil solenoid first. It's not too hard of a do-it-yourself thing if your hands are not too big. It really is a mystery to me that the oil solenoid isn't mentioned more.
Thanks Dave. I recall it happening on a family members Accord quite awhile back. Just an annoying and unnerving sound to hear. Thanks for sharing and hope all is well and stay safe 😊
I change the vtc actuator, my cars at about 3,500 miles was getting out of oil and making the noise I change and in cold start it doesn’t make it any more and doesn’t get out of oil but at about the same miles 3,500 it makes the noise and the oil light pops up so I’ll change this, thanks for the information. I also think I have a leak but will see in the next few days
Just completed replacement on mine however I must have got the one Honda that didn't have timing marks on the chain itself like all the manuals state. Got 1/2 link off which threw up a P0341 code. Had to do the job over counting links between sprocket marks. First time I put the sprocket on the link instead of between two links. Can't fool that computer!!!
That was brilliant and efficient lesson with excellent diagram. A first class video especially on your ability to convey technical information in a very time efficient manner that even people in the educational system do not often have. Only thing missing is the actual sound of this rattl but that doesn't take anything away from one of the best of youtube mechanics learning video.
When I start up my 09 Accord, it makes that sound. It has plenty of oil, but it makes that sound. It lasts for no more than 2-3 seconds, and then the car drives smoothly. Sometimes you can blatantly hear it other times it's barely noticeable. Other than that rattle noise at start up, my 09 Accord drives as if there's no problems.
@@oegesauto5619 i saw a video on here where a guy changed the springs on the VTC with more heavier duty ones and it cured the rattling. If i can find it i will add link
Great video! Owning a 2009 tsx with rattle noise issues at cold start. Not that bad, i can live with it for now, but definitely will have to replace all timing chain, tensioners, guides, 2 sprockets and 2 sensors and all seals if I wanttl my engine to keep running. 2nd owner, last was a really sweet but ignorant woman (about cars) sadly(^.^;
Dang... Mine was rattling at startup, but it also makes the same rattle-like sound between ~2250-3500 rpms, especially when warmed up. I have replaced the oil pump (RSX upgrade/balance shaft delete), i replaced the timing chain, all the guides, tensioner, and even replaced both the exhaust camshaft gear and intake gear (ie VTC actuator). I adjusted my valve clearances to spec. Replaced my VTEC solenoid, and my VTC solenoid. I replaced the VTC filter/gasket, along with all other gaskets. Even had my fuel injectors professionally cleaned. Ive also replaced my water pump, AC compressor, and rebuilt my PS pump Last night i double checked my valve clearances and inspected ALL of the valvetrain and i cant find anything that would be causing this rattle. Even verified all cam cap bolts were snug. Double checked that my timing was correct as well (it is). The startup rattle went away after replacing the VTC actuator, but i still get this rattle around ~2250-3500 RPMs when warm. Any ideas what it could be? At this point im beginning to think its my rod bearings or wrist pins that are worn. Engine has 148,000 miles on it. When i was replacing the oil pump (engine out) i also removed the crankshaft girdle and inspected the main bearings - all of them looked literally brand new. But i didnt inspect the rod bearings while i was in there... 🤦♂️ Its driving me crazy.
I had my vtc actuator replaced after it fried my sparkplugs, and a solenoid. 3 days after the new actuator was installed, the loud cranking/rattle sound appeared. So, sorry, replacing the actuator does not solve the rattle sound--its something else.
I had a 💩 2008 Accord with the same problem, I replaced myself the VTC actuator, the VTC solenoid and the chain tensioner at once , parts purchased from the Honda dealer and I fallowed the TSB by Honda technicians , the happiness just last 10k and the annoying noise came back, always using 5w20 synthetic ☹️ it looks to me that all engine using such technology develop this annoying noise 😞
I had a slight rattle on start up . accessory drive belt was very slightly stretched only 75000mi .Replaced the belt no more rattle. Tensioner rattled.
This just started happening to my 2009 Accord. Your explanation made me realize why it's happening. I had a mystery oil leak for a long time which means I was low on oil very often and just got it fixed. Do you have a repair video fixing the VTC actuator? And also, is this a major problem that needs to be repaired immediately?
Wow 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 thanks alot I've had this noise for a while and no mechanic has brought this up...my 2009 honda accord is driving slow maybe this has brought me a solution. Thanks New sub btw👋🏽
Nice information 👍... My Honda BR-V diesel engine starting & stopping with abnormal sound like "gadd"... This abnormal sound is more early in the morning... After running 30-40kms still abnormal sound is there but comparatively less... Please suggest the solution... Thank you
Will this problema make check engine light i get vtec solinoid ready replace it like 3 times i get actuator noise litle bit some times wont let me pass 3,000rpms
I just went through this on a 2004 EP3 Honda. Sounded horrible, screeching sound on cold start, starter?..NO, timing chain? NO..actuator? NO. The dealer wanted a fortune to fix it. Finally, a shop that specializes in Japanese autos, the old mechanic, told me that it was the PCV VALVE and told me to do it myself. I laughed at him. But the sound got worse, so, for $20.00 and 15 minutes, I replaced it. The old valve was 120,000 old and not functional. Not only is that horrible sound gone on start up, but the SI Ep3 runs better, idles correctly, MPG back where it was. Look for the simple things first before getting into a major headache. PCV VALVE.
How much would it cost to have this fixed. I have an 08 with that and want to fix it. I’m 17 and this is my first car I bought and want to take care of it. Thanks and best wishes
It runs about $800 at the Honda dealership and Honda American won't do anything about it. I went back and forth with them before I just said the heck with it. Mine has probably rattled for about five years/25,000 miles before I finally decided to get it fixed because I couldn't stand the grinding noise . The service tech said it wasn't something that was going to hurt the engine. Not sure if I believe that or not.
@@danielmoerke446 Exactly. I did some research and saw that actually I shouldn’t be even driving it if it makes that noise since it can hurt the engine in the long-run but who knows.
Hey I just had my timing done on my car bout 6 months ago, and I been keeping up with oil but just today my check engine light came on and I herd a lil rattle....should I try tighting the pully???need help thanks.
We are getting the lifter rattle on cold start on our 2011 Accord SE. I've found parking on a slight grade in the drive (front end higher) helps, possibly the oil sump pickup stays submerged or primed (my guess). Next, I'm going to try the 0w20 syn blend oil. I wished I had found the VCT as possible issue sooner, we had the timing chain replaced recently (240k miles) and they were right there...doah!
It's not the lifters making the rattle. It's the locking pin inside the VTC (not VCT) actuator moving back and forth across its detent. This is usually because the spring that works against the pin gets weak and shortened.
Hello man! Thank you so much for your amazing explanation, just a little question. I have a 2012 honda accord 2.4 with 200K kilometers and since i bought it, i have this rattle noise on cold starts. Is this going to affect the engine at any point if i don't change the vtc actuator?
My wifes 2012 CRV does this and has been for a few years. I have seen where people replace them and they still go bad. Honda has an issue with these but because it's not a saftey concern, there's no recall. I feel like I should have that replaced but knowing the part has never been corected and it doesn't seem to be doing anything so I keep putting it off. Frustrating.
Should be because if chain breaks on highway and engine stops, that should be a recall on it, get rearebded at 75 MPH on highway won't feel good if Timing Chain breaks.
I also have a 2012 CRV. Got it a few years ago in December 2021 and I’ve basically had the same problem since I’ve had the car. Last year, I paid to get the timing chain replaced because that’s what the mechanic told me had to be done. He said if’s all connected to the vtc actuator so it all has to be replaced.I go and pick up the car and he told me that the car still does a very soft rattle at startup, but it should be fixed. Well that literally only lasted until the next day. That whole rattle came back and has been there ever since. I didn’t have the time to take it back to him to have him correct it because I was out of town. I’m just about ready to give up on it. That timing chain replacement costed me a lot of money for me to still be having the same problem. I at least try to make sure I keep my oil changed as much as possible. The car runs fine other than this one issue. So hopefully it can stay that way until I can either figure out a way to get it fixed for good, or until I get another car.
@@mrpistonrecaro6483 yeah 3 times trying to get rid of the valve noise. The car runs good just has that rattle on startup, a little valve noises and when the vvt goes to the other lobe on the intake cam around 2200rpm it makes noise and that's the part I'd like more information on. Probably should've replaced that vvt solenoid when I did all the vtc, timing chain work. It's either that, the valves aren't properly adjusted or maybe it needs another intake cam. Idk the car runs good I'll figure it out eventually
Lol...did replace timing chain, water pump and all about 4 years ago. Just now after a oil change and first cold snap it started to rattle in the morning (coldstart). Put Lucas-additive in the oil but still does it. Frustrating....
Did you fix it? I have the same issue and I don’t know what to do. I always had Honda Civic same motor and never had this issue maybe because I used lucas oil all the time
I called my honda dealer and they said it needs to fixed. The issue has to do with timing and the longer and more worn the actuator gets more damage will be done to the engine. Its not just an annoying noise, it needs to be fixed.
I've read a lot about this and my conclusion is: No, at least not asap. It won't harm anything when the vtc rattles because the cam rotation will be within limits and non interfering. Some people say it will stretch the chain over time so that'd be concerning. I'm guessing tho, that people that report chain stretching missheard the noise and it was timing chain noise to begin with. Keep the oil topped of.
My 2010 Honda Accord EX with 110,000 miles does this for just a second on most cold starts. Do you have a repair video fixing the VTC actuator? And also, is this a major problem that needs to be repaired immediately??
Is there potential a bad vvt solenoid produces a low oil pressure light? first I had the p2646 code, then I had the oil changed at a jiffy lube (the last time, i swear), and then the low oil pressure light came on, along with a P0011 code. yeah I hear that rattle too, when i start it up, been giving me anxiety about my engine and I won't drive it much. I have purchased a new vtec spool assembly, a vvt solenoid, vvt filter/gasket, and a new oil pressure sender too. going to replace them all tomorrow and do an oil change.
My 2012 Honda Accord EX-L, a 4-door model, produces a juicer machine-like sound only in the morning when I first start the car. However, after the initial startup, I never hear this sound again until the next morning's first start. Interestingly, if I open the hood before starting the engine, and then start the engine with the hood open, there is no juicer machine-like sound. What could be the reason? Any ideas? Thanks
I have the same problem, but it’s been happening for so long it’s getting real bad to the point where it’s when I’m driving too now. It’s really loud and I feel like my cars gonna break down any second. It’s an 08 Accord. Is this something I can do myself or do I call a mechanic?
@@youtubersenlamira7562 hey so I found the problem. It s the tensioner. Don’t know too much about it but if it goes bad u need a new engine. Take your car to the mechanic immediately. Hope this helps. The timing belt and all that needs to be reset and I don’t trust myself messing with that stuff
One would think the bottom line of a rattle sound is metal rattling against metal. This video didn't pinpoint the cause of the rattling sound. Is the variable valve control solenoid making the rattling noise or is the solenoid causing the timing chain, valves, or something else to chatter which I would view as a major issue of concern?
Same problem with my Honda CR-V but now my crv is talking Tomuch gas like 7 or 8 km per litre . And wired noice came when car running and engine oil is getting low rapidly what to do ? 2014 crv touring with 178000 km
Some people go 100,000+ miles with it bad. Just make sure your oil is topped off biweekly. If it goes out, your check engine light will turn on and acceleration will be sluggish.
Hi I have a Honda accord 08 that when you start it makes that noise and I also have a check engine light with code P0341 with means sensors might be bad ? Sometimes when I'm driving it. it accelerates more when driving would the sensor cause that or does it have to do with the timing chain possibly? Or with what your saying in the video thanks for the help in advance.
The car is telling you it has a timing issue (probably not a sensor problem). Bad VTC actuators can cause this code but the problem that sets this code a lot is a "stretched" (out of spec) timing chain (the fix is usually a new timing chain and tensioner). Driving the car with low engine oil or not changing the oil frequently is usually the root cause of timing chain and VTC issues.
I have a 99 Honda Civic ex manual and when I first start it there is a high vibration when I’m sitting in the drivers seat, it’s not the exhaust because it’s 3 months old it’s not hood rattling either. What could it be? If I let the car warm up say 10 minutes it disappears. Again only when I first start it up
i got an acura rsx 2006 base model and my engine makes a little ticking/ rattle noise. idk what to do to solve it someone help. the noise gets faster when i accelerate
I’ve got only 116K on my 04 CR-V, I’ve been always ontop of my oil maintenance and this problem has been occurring with the knock on startup, is there nothing I can do about it now besides have that intake camshaft part replaced? Maybe replacing the oil pressure switch on lower side of the engine might help?
So basically because the vtec is oil pressure regulated the car is using the choppier cam lobes on initial startup because there’s a bunch of oil pressure?
So Chris Fix has a video showing a 2008 Honda with this rattle, and it exactly matches the noise coming out of my 2012 Accord. Can just the actuator itself be replaced. I don't want to get talked into other components like timing chain. Thanks.

I brought my 2014 Honda CR-V to the dealership after 1 week off the lot and mechanic at the dealership said it’s because the light weight oil falls after time and does not sit up in the engine, so when first starting with cold start the sound occurs prior to oil re-circulating. They told me nothing to worry about, but based on this video, perhaps it is something to seek second opinion for and rectify?.
Would this be the same for a Honda pilot 2007 EX my engine shakes up cold start up $127,000 MI ( NO check engine light) any suggestions 3.5lV6 please note I do not think spark plugs have been changed ever only timing belt water pump
I've got an fn2 typeR. My vtec kicks in at 4200rpm, at 6000rpm I noticed a surge of power... keeping in mind vtec kicks in like it should but at 6000rpm it feels like the real power kicked in. Could this be the cause of a faulty vtc gear/actuator?
Just thinking, if one allowed engine oil to get so low as to starve the timing chain of oil, wouldn't damage likely already have been done to other areas such as bearing surfaces, etc. that rely on constant oil pressure?
Can this be an issue with the '07 3.5 as well? I get a metallic rattle on start in my MILs van. Testing to see if it goes away. Just started hearing it today when I came over to her place.
You can change the VTC without removing the camshaft. Also changing the engine oil early may help. I had my 2012 CRV purchased brand new. Changed the engine oil religiously between 3-4k miles when the maintenance minder says 60% and I still have the cold start rattle startup noise. I'm going to try to use 5w-30 oil weight next time.
@@stephnicaise it did not fix it. I get a rattle at start up almost every time. It’s been like this for over a year. Engine is flawless other than the start up rattle. I have the ability to change the VTC actuator myself but I am choosing to ignore the noise as I am not convinced it causes any engine damage.
@@stephnicaise I read reports that the timing chain might stretch due to the rattle over time. If it indeed stretches the engine will throw a cam position sensor code. So once that happens you definitely need to change the VTC actuator along with timing chain, and tensioner all at once. If it ever happens I will change all three since it’s the same job. Not a big deal and not much extra cost as well.

i have the same issue. they dropped the ball with this Kengine. the ol 1990 engines was much better.
Same issue, only when I start the car. I don’t mind the noise! Is this something that needs to be replaced soon?? What if I don’t replace it and keep it for a year??? My car is not worth the repairs haha
ChrisFix just changed out one of these, he did it without having to remove the cam shaft, good video.
Great explanation. Very common issue on the K-series engines. Often misdiagnosed as starter not disengaging after starting car. This like you mentioned predominantly happens in cold weather, and VTC actuator losing oil “prime” in the cold weather. TSB was out a few years back.
Thanks 👍!
oh rickie, what you mean is that a bad Vtc actuator looses its oil? that's what is causing the rattle noise often misdiagnosed as bad timIng chain or tensioners... I'm having rattle issues 1/3 of the time when I cold start
@@louisfredgagnon what was the part you changed out to fix the cold start rattle?
Thanks Dave, best Honda videos on yt. I have a 2011 Accord with 120k miles with this issue. The rattle noise became more noticeable a year ago and I have probably driven 15k miles since. Fresh oil helps. I read somewhere that turning the key three times before cranking may help with the noise. Idk why this works but I do it every cold start and it makes the rattle noise less worse or sometimes I don’t even hear anything
👍
I got a 2011 accord too, it's had that sound since I gotten it. Now I'm got a code p0341 popping up and weird idle. Ohh nooo..
turning the key on primes the fuel pump. the engine needs to be turning to pump oil thats why the rattle stops seconds after starting and oil is flowing through the vtc actuator.
Definitely can't go wrong with regular oil changes, thanks for the comment!

Spark plugs NGK Iridium:
Originally $24 each. Paid $11.
Valve cover gasket:
Originally $38. Paid $18.
M1 Synthetic 5qt and M1 filter:
Originally $64.
Cool story, bro.
@ I can hear the sarcasm, but did you actually read that long af story?? Lol. I was straight up bored that night! As you can tell
Just the gasket?
Same situation here.. Had it fixed at the dealer and now the rattle is back..

For our 2018 Honda Fit with the startup rattle from the VCT the simple fix was to change the oil to the blended version from Valvoline. I believe we used the non-blended / non-synth version on the previous change and that is when the rattle started. My bet is that the synth sticks better/longer on the pin and thus it pops into place without issue.
thanks Matthew! the rattle started right after I changed oil. Your answer helps calm down my rattle sound issue.
What grade of synthetic blended oil did you use? I have the same problem with my v6 accord
@@alanchunlopez3037probably the correct one
The problem is a weak VTC actuator spring. Costs around $25 for the spring.

Consider changing PCV valve if burning oil. Cheap and easy diy. Great vehicle , I hope to get 300,000 miles.
Been trying to find what this was for a while. Thanks a lot! Now, it can actually get repaired.

This was a damn good explanation. 2012 Honda Crosstour doing this exact thing!!

how did you fix it having the same issue
Thanks for explaining the difference between a variable valve timing actuator and VTEC! I needed that! 😅
I don't using anything but Honda oil filters on the Hondas in my shop. Thanks for the input!
Thanks for those feedback, did kn filter solved the rattle problem?
Sorry I guess i replied twice. I don't do this type of stuff often enough, I guess.

Ive also replaced my water pump, AC compressor, and rebuilt my PS pump
Last night i double checked my valve clearances and inspected ALL of the valvetrain and i cant find anything that would be causing this rattle.
PCV VALVE.

Very nice 🤙🏼Mahalo for the simplied version of explaining that! Made something that isnt really common sense....kinda common sense now! 😲🤯😄🤙🏼
Hello man! Thank you so much for your amazing explanation, just a little question. I have a 2012 honda accord 2.4 with 200K kilometers and since i bought it, i have this rattle noise on cold starts. Is this going to affect the engine at any point if i don't change the vtc actuator?
What was the verdict? Did it die?
My wifes 2012 CRV does this and has been for a few years. I have seen where people replace them and they still go bad. Honda has an issue with these but because it's not a saftey concern, there's no recall. I feel like I should have that replaced but knowing the part has never been corected and it doesn't seem to be doing anything so I keep putting it off. Frustrating.
Interesting. I’m here because my 2012 CRV does the same! It’s only been a couple months, but I’m glad to hear that it’s good for years.
Should be because if chain breaks on highway and engine stops, that should be a recall on it, get rearebded at 75 MPH on highway won't feel good if Timing Chain breaks.
I also just came here for my 2012 crv as well lol. Fix yo shit Honda
I did the VTC intake gear, chain, tensioner etc, still makes the same rattle on startup
Did you adjusted valves

Bump - any insight on this?
Thank you for sharing
Thank you for the video 1 question I have is what problems can arise from driving a car with a bad actuator?
Big help. Appreciate it!
I have purchased a new vtec spool assembly, a vvt solenoid, vvt filter/gasket, and a new oil pressure sender too. going to replace them all tomorrow and do an oil change.
what happns if i didnt replace the vtc actuator and been driving it over a year and now the noise got worse? but no check engine yet
Any ideas? Thanks
How important is this to do? My 2013 (7th Gen) CR-V has been doing this for a year or two.
I have the same problem, but it’s been happening for so long it’s getting real bad to the point where it’s when I’m driving too now. It’s really loud and I feel like my cars gonna break down any second. It’s an 08 Accord. Is this something I can do myself or do I call a mechanic?
I have the same issue! Did you fix it already? How long you keep driving it after you discovered the sound?
@@youtubersenlamira7562 hey so I found the problem. It s the tensioner. Don’t know too much about it but if it goes bad u need a new engine. Take your car to the mechanic immediately. Hope this helps. The timing belt and all that needs to be reset and I don’t trust myself messing with that stuff
ive noticed this sound with my 2012 CRV. What should I expect to pay to have this fixed by a mechanic?
Hi, sometimes I have cold start-up rattle. If the VTC went bad, is it possible to have a small rattle sound in about 3k rpm? Thanks.
Having the same problem now did you find out why the rattle happens around 3k rpm ???
Same here
It's the timing chain tensioner going bad, I have the same problem on my 08 civic si. Getting it replaced In a few days along with a valve adjustment.
I have a 2018 Honda accord shakes for a few seconds coldstart do you think it would be the same problem please let me know thanks
Same problem with my Honda CR-V but now my crv is talking Tomuch gas like 7 or 8 km per litre . And wired noice came when car running and engine oil is getting low rapidly what to do ? 2014 crv touring with 178000 km
The fix in my page
Noticed a noise like that on my CRV. Wasn't sure what it was at first, now I know. If I don't get that replaced, how bad of an issue would that be?
Some people go 100,000+ miles with it bad. Just make sure your oil is topped off biweekly. If it goes out, your check engine light will turn on and acceleration will be sluggish.
Gil Arellano. Gotcha, thanks. So far acceleration is normal, I do need to check the oil, it’s been a minute 😬
@@BigDog50001 thank you i will check out it out and get it changed
I have a 99 Honda Civic ex manual and when I first start it there is a high vibration when I’m sitting in the drivers seat, it’s not the exhaust because it’s 3 months old it’s not hood rattling either. What could it be? If I let the car warm up say 10 minutes it disappears. Again only when I first start it up
mine is doing the same thing, could it be also the timing chain instead? my 08 accord has 170k miles on it.
i got an acura rsx 2006 base model and my engine makes a little ticking/ rattle noise. idk what to do to solve it someone help. the noise gets faster when i accelerate
Thanks.
Like chrisfix said in his video, if the timing chain has jumped, then it also needs to be replaced.
i have a 2016 honda accord will this cause toxic fumes to enter heat vent, i test the heat in another car the same year and i had no problem , when my heat is on my in side of the car is toxic it burn my eyes my mouth and make me sick , wondering if this was the problem . or does any one know a fix for this problem
I have a rattling noise on cold start on my 2012 Accord V6 Coupe. Could this be the same issue ?
Does the same apply to 01 accord coupe 4 cyl????
No, those engines do not have a VTC actuator (cam phaser).
Good video well spoken to the topic no drama .just facts thanks!!
Thanks 👍!
This video helped a million. Thanks.
Just thinking, if one allowed engine oil to get so low as to starve the timing chain of oil, wouldn't damage likely already have been done to other areas such as bearing surfaces, etc. that rely on constant oil pressure?
Possibly, but generally the chain goes first.
Controlled by the computer. That is the statement we as consumers should never have let happen.
It was my timing belt tensioner
2012 Honda accord v6
when changing the actuator do you have to change the timing chain? what other parts are recommended to change if any? 135K on engine.
Chrisfix did a video on this
Would adding a quart of Lucas during an oil change help?
Can this be an issue with the '07 3.5 as well? I get a metallic rattle on start in my MILs van. Testing to see if it goes away. Just started hearing it today when I came over to her place.
You can change the VTC without removing the camshaft. Also changing the engine oil early may help. I had my 2012 CRV purchased brand new. Changed the engine oil religiously between 3-4k miles when the maintenance minder says 60% and I still have the cold start rattle startup noise. I'm going to try to use 5w-30 oil weight next time.
Did you fix the problem before switching to a different oil? I’m trying to understand if this is a problem that actually need fixing
@@Tacoexplorer yeah same here. And based on other people doing the repair and it coming back I really don’t think it’s necessary
@@Tacoexplorer My 2011 accord just popped that code p0341. Changed the cam position sensor. No help. I'm hoping it didn't jump time. How much do u think they would charge to change the timing and vtc an tensioner? I'm hoping not to much.... lol
Can you please make a Honda Civic8th gen VTC actuator replacement please I’m in need of help step by step I enjoy your guidance
My 2007 Honda Fit just started making a rattling noise from the engine on a cold start. Has me worried as fuck. Hopefully it's not an expensive fix.
Did you fix it? Just oil and filter change??
The rattle started the day after I changed oil. Should I still have someone check my timing chain & VTC? great vid!
I have an 08 accord and mine last longer than a few seconds is this typical?
I have a 2017 honda accord so if i do an oil change the rattling will stop when i start the car in the morning
It probably wont stop it but having clean oil will help delay a major repair bill...
Does the VCT issue apply to 2013 Earth Dreams motor as well? Can't seem to find any relevant information for 2013 models. Did they change the design in 2013?
