Sojourn + Mercy rocked OW2 for the entirety of the betas and lasted until 2023 when they finally changed how the rail gun gains charge from damage calculations to a static increase of charge per hit. But everyone was figuring the game out still so it probably only really affected people who played against a sojourn w/ good aim
I remember when double shield was starting to get out of hand and people realized that Symmetra was a great counter to it because she could bust shields easily......and a week later they nerfed her hard yet they left Sigma and Orisa untouched for years :^)
Not a meta, but I always enjoyed doing the old 'Backdoor' play. Have a Symmetra sneak past the enemies to the point, then bait the enemies to "spawn camp" your teammates while you set up your Teleporter. By the time the enemies get back to point it will either be captured or close to being captured, and your team will be turtled up to defend.
I remember climbing up to high diamond as a rein zarya two trick back during double sheild and bunker meta which was insane for me considering i used to hang around mid to high gold
Few things Tempo ressing has nothing to do with the Moth meta, Tempo ressing was about usage of the ressurect ult. The hide and seek meta wasn’t a problem competitively, Tempo ressing, which was ressing earlier, closer to 2 people was generally more effective. The rework was supposed to address Mercy’s hide and seek from being a play style at all, and in this it was successful. Also no, goats does not stand for go all tanks and supports, Goats was named after the contenders teams that pioneered it. And that comes from the term goat, which is short of greatest of all time. Goats was not exactly Rein, DVA, Zarya, Brig, Lucio and Moira. Moira especially fell out of favour as people started realising no, you don’t need her insane stats, you’d much rather have Transcendence and discord orb. This also ignores perhaps the greatest strength of goats, its adaptability. Swapping out the zen/Moira for an Ana was a real consideration on certain maps, and they all had different strengths. We also saw teams swap off of the DVA for something like Sombra, and this was how Seoul Dynasty ended up ending NYXLs winstreak during Goats. We also saw teams swap the Rein to Winston on certain maps. This was still all goats, but the deck was adaptable And saying goats fell apart after one member died also just isn’t true. Freauently, as long as exactly Brig, Zarya and Lucio stayed alive, the fight was not lost. Some people do say some positive things about double shield, not many, but it did require huge amounts of teamwork, and you can see that in the clip you showed. Pirate ship was also way before double shield and role queue. Pirate ship was just a bunker comp (which basically always existed in some sense, but especially after the release of orisa) that set up on a payload, as opposed to being set up on defense (although when Sym’s teleport became an ability, it did start to see some play during Goats, as hard bastion bunkers were one of the few things that could actually crack it (and even then it struggled).
Pharmacy+shields was a horeendous team comp to fight, usually the second healer was ana so the tsnks wont die, the supports are out of reach and the dps are being boosted/guarded
pirate ship isn't necessarily a double ship archetype, it's just what orisa-bastion comps were referred to since long bepfore when it was known as a cheese comp for payload maps. bastion later became a staple in all gamemodes during the second part of the double shield meta when the reaper-moira-lucio core was replaced with bastion-baptiste-zen. like goats, double shield went through several changes as the devs tried to balance it out. the sigma nerf in particular made the meta go from a slower deathball without any consequences to a more methodical defensive ability rotation management game where a misplacing a cooldown by 1s could mean you lose and get wiped by bastion. it was awful
In terms of sheer influence over all ranks, Goats was definitely the breaking point for OW1. Anything above Silver would be Goats or eventually become Goats halfway through the game, and barely anybody actually had fun doing it. Pirate ship was strong too but that was slightly more situational and did fall to pieces depending on the map. Also it's definitely worth remembering that we had the ranked 2CP game mode back then which was itself oppressive and forced problematic gameplay. This mode really encouraged the bunker and shield nonsense. Volskaya Industries that goes more than 6 rounds... 30+ minute games... Nightmare
Only thing I disagree with was that double shield lasted until the end of OW1. If it was still the meta, it wasn't nearly as oppressive at the end, since Sigma and Orisa's shields only had 3 digit health. Sigma had like 1600 when he first came out, meaning you basically needed a bastion to punch through it, but by the end, there were at least other options. Great video though!
Played ow at a very high level: peaked at around 128th NA. Double shield killed the game for me, I still played it, but that love and spark i had went with it
12:02 this is false. Double shield after receiving nerfs had a total health of 1300, 300 less than a rein shield which was at that point 1600. The problem came when you broke the shields where broken support abilities became an issu (I'm talking about bap lamp)
Why would he only talk about after nerf? He was talking about the peak for practically every comp, which during double shields peak, Orisa and Sig could cycle shields infinitely if you weren't running junk or bastion
@@ishtarrs because the person in the video about how it was miserable until ow2 release because double shield was meta despite the fact that this isn't true and that the meta had shifted to ball
I’m shocked joats wasn’t mentioned. Or the pocket rail gunner that dominated ow2 for half of its lifespan. Joats caused junker queen to get nerfed into the ground.
I take issue with saying the goats mirror match was boring though I did play regularly at the 4.3-4.4k band of the open division. A 70 page document on goats did not even scratch the surface of how diverse the comp was and how differently it could be played and when you constantly analysed your games and owl games to see the variations it was by far the most fun meta to play the game at a high level, except for one person, the poor dps player who is now forced to one trick brigitte. But that meta had the most diverse spread of potentially workable team compositions in the game at any one time, even if a lot of them were simple variations of goats: Boats (beam goats using Moira) Goats (using zenyatta) Moats (using the moth) Floats (using winston or ball) Snoats (using mei instead of d.va) Hoats (using sombra instead of d.va and Orisa instead of rein) Groats (using ana) Suicide dive (if the enemy ran zen, you could go tracer genji ball d.va zen lucio and if the enemy lucio did not hold speed boost you could hit the zen with everything and the brig can’t shift into everyone, then you have a damage boost and they don’t, lucio sticks with zen to prevent the potential counter charge and you kill them) Triple dps (situational but ball doomfist/sombra genji tracer can operate the same way as suicide dive if you are playing into a competent lucio) Quad dps (only worked on maps with a high wall such as route 66 first point but pharah, ball, doomfist, ashe/hanzo, tracer, mercy was brutal to play into as you had no effective counter to the pharmercy and hanzo and when everyone else’s job is just survive which they all do incredibly well due to their abilities it will eventually whittle you down and stall the fight. Very situational but it did work) Pulled pork (Orisa and roadhog, situational and could only be played into a comp involving ball to avoid shields blocking hooks but incredibly effective) Not to mention the constant counter play within the team itself, the shatter mindgames between rein, the grav mindgames between zarya and d.va, the speed mindgames between Lucio, landing effective discord orbs on the squishies and not tanks, literally every had fun except for the poor dps stuck on brig, who just held m1 and pressed shift every now and then
death blossom + nanoboost was called beyblade because of how fast blossom was. you could even combo with Lucio and mannn no speed cap made reaper go ZOOM
I can't even put into words how much i hated the double shield with bastion and Baptiste. Especially on Volksaya industry second point. Where the bastion could just sit in the corner on point
Actually double shield fell off after some time and was replaced by a Dva Ball comp featuring Zen and Brig on supports and Tracer Echo on dps. I played that Meta for like 1,5 Years until Overwatch 2 Came out
Great vid! However, I don't think GOATS stands for what you mentioned. Goats was called goats, because a contenders team called goats was the first one to play it

I remember when double shield was starting to get out of hand and people realized that Symmetra was a great counter to it because she could bust shields easily......and a week later they nerfed her hard yet they left Sigma and Orisa untouched for years :^)
first time hearing about hack fist my reaction to sombra
“perhaps i’ve been to harsh on you”
Overwatch classic: the pirate ship. Bastion on payload, with the team goose guarding bastion in sentry mode.
6:12 I hope this is a joke
If I had as much protection as Bastion in the double shield meta, I wouldn’t be paying so much in child support each month.
you forgot when genji got a shuriken dmg buff which made every game a nanoblade horror story
or when shields got nerfed and zarya and hog got buffed, so the game felt like a 6v6 battle royale
Good ol pirate ship hella busted in lower ranks
Because of Double Shield, I had to go back to my Junkrat days when 6v6 came back…
I remember climbing up to high diamond as a rein zarya two trick back during double sheild and bunker meta which was insane for me considering i used to hang around mid to high gold
Few things
Tempo ressing has nothing to do with the Moth meta, Tempo ressing was about usage of the ressurect ult.
This was still all goats, but the deck was adaptable
And saying goats fell apart after one member died also just isn’t true.
Genji was good with the speed boosted Nano too!
I think they should give Genji a passive speed boost with his ult to bring it back.
U decided to go with this thumbnail good choice
Even thought they’re gone, I will always remember fondly on how I raged at most of these metas ❤😂.
this is a great channel glad you popped up on my reccomended
Pharmacy+shields was a horeendous team comp to fight, usually the second healer was ana so the tsnks wont die, the supports are out of reach and the dps are being boosted/guarded
Congrats on 20k 🎉
"double shield nearly drove the player count to extinction"....no blizzard did that all on their own
pirate ship isn't necessarily a double ship archetype, it's just what orisa-bastion comps were referred to since long bepfore when it was known as a cheese comp for payload maps. bastion later became a staple in all gamemodes during the second part of the double shield meta when the reaper-moira-lucio core was replaced with bastion-baptiste-zen. like goats, double shield went through several changes as the devs tried to balance it out. the sigma nerf in particular made the meta go from a slower deathball without any consequences to a more methodical defensive ability rotation management game where a misplacing a cooldown by 1s could mean you lose and get wiped by bastion. it was awful
Nightmare
5:32 so he was uncounterable you see team play is scarce
Go all tank and supports is a backronym. The comp was created by the contenders team named Goats and was named after them
Only thing I disagree with was that double shield lasted until the end of OW1. If it was still the meta, it wasn't nearly as oppressive at the end, since Sigma and Orisa's shields only had 3 digit health. Sigma had like 1600 when he first came out, meaning you basically needed a bastion to punch through it, but by the end, there were at least other options.
Great video though!
was looking for this !
Only reason mauga was so broken was cause streamers kept saying he felt weak during half season test when he wasn’t
Played ow at a very high level: peaked at around 128th NA. Double shield killed the game for me, I still played it, but that love and spark i had went with it
DC double sheild and goats was peak
12:02 this is false. Double shield after receiving nerfs had a total health of 1300, 300 less than a rein shield which was at that point 1600. The problem came when you broke the shields where broken support abilities became an issu (I'm talking about bap lamp)
Also around the last year of OW1, double shield wasn't even meta anymore. It was the Ball sig comp mainly being meta
My favorite overwatch youtuber
I’m shocked joats wasn’t mentioned. Or the pocket rail gunner that dominated ow2 for half of its lifespan. Joats caused junker queen to get nerfed into the ground.
:D hey I'm the Sombra in that last game 😂😅
I take issue with saying the goats mirror match was boring though I did play regularly at the 4.3-4.4k band of the open division. A 70 page document on goats did not even scratch the surface of how diverse the comp was and how differently it could be played and when you constantly analysed your games and owl games to see the variations it was by far the most fun meta to play the game at a high level, except for one person, the poor dps player who is now forced to one trick brigitte.
But that meta had the most diverse spread of potentially workable team compositions in the game at any one time, even if a lot of them were simple variations of goats:
Boats (beam goats using Moira)
Goats (using zenyatta)
Moats (using the moth)
Floats (using winston or ball)
Snoats (using mei instead of d.va)
Hoats (using sombra instead of d.va and Orisa instead of rein)
Groats (using ana)
Suicide dive (if the enemy ran zen, you could go tracer genji ball d.va zen lucio and if the enemy lucio did not hold speed boost you could hit the zen with everything and the brig can’t shift into everyone, then you have a damage boost and they don’t, lucio sticks with zen to prevent the potential counter charge and you kill them)
Triple dps (situational but ball doomfist/sombra genji tracer can operate the same way as suicide dive if you are playing into a competent lucio)
Quad dps (only worked on maps with a high wall such as route 66 first point but pharah, ball, doomfist, ashe/hanzo, tracer, mercy was brutal to play into as you had no effective counter to the pharmercy and hanzo and when everyone else’s job is just survive which they all do incredibly well due to their abilities it will eventually whittle you down and stall the fight. Very situational but it did work)
Pulled pork (Orisa and roadhog, situational and could only be played into a comp involving ball to avoid shields blocking hooks but incredibly effective)
Not to mention the constant counter play within the team itself, the shatter mindgames between rein, the grav mindgames between zarya and d.va, the speed mindgames between Lucio, landing effective discord orbs on the squishies and not tanks, literally every had fun except for the poor dps stuck on brig, who just held m1 and pressed shift every now and then
That’s so weird, I played during the scatter arrow days but I don’t remember nano giving a speed boost. Granted I never played Ana then
death blossom + nanoboost was called beyblade because of how fast blossom was.
you could even combo with Lucio and mannn
no speed cap made reaper go ZOOM
I can't even put into words how much i hated the double shield with bastion and Baptiste. Especially on Volksaya industry second point. Where the bastion could just sit in the corner on point
Actually double shield fell off after some time and was replaced by a Dva Ball comp featuring Zen and Brig on supports and Tracer Echo on dps. I played that Meta for like 1,5 Years until Overwatch 2 Came out
You convinced me with that runescape soundtrack. Subbed with pleasure
lol the last clip is from quote not dafran?
Great vid! However, I don't think GOATS stands for what you mentioned. Goats was called goats, because a contenders team called goats was the first one to play it
20k before October the end broo let’s gooooo
Anyone else remember in OW1 where there was a week where Zarya Hog was a thing?
A good litmus test for a game is if the mirror match is interesting
no bc double sheild is the whole reason I don't want 6v6 to come back, like I don't want to go through that hell again spending 20 minutes just shooting sheilds.
Mauga was the bane of my existence as a support because I couldn’t focus on anyone else and if I didn’t heal the mauga we lost because the other mauga was getting sucked off by their supports 😭😭😭 I stopped playing for a while
Teleporting bastion was my fav thing to run in ow1
your alive! i was so worried mr watchover im sorry i missed the stream you caught me pursuing my educational prowess
Not mentioning soljourn mercy meta is criminal.
You forgot to at least throw the orisa ult to hog hook combo in the honorable or dishonorable mentions, lol.
'high quality vids' come now this is Stylosa level
your videos are very refreshing. you have a nice way of talking about bad stuff. keep up the good work.
Hey, I get a lot of comments, but this one means a lot to me. Genuinely, thank you from the bottom of my heart. In my content, this is one of the things that matters to me most.
It’s not really a meta but Quinston rolled an OWL championship back in the day
everyone always forgets when the game just launched and you could have 6 bastions sit on payload in ranked
Goats wouldn’t have been that bad of a meta if it just didn’t last as long, overall it was pretty cool to watch, it just got way over played in pros and top rank
with thirty something heroes it will always be hard to make it perfect
I’m surprised I did not see the infamous bastions sig Orisa and bap window
This video gave me ptsd in so many ways
I was a low diamond player during the heart of goats and it was never a major issue. Required too much coordination for most teams
Juno brig is going to evolve into a problem, and i cant wait
What about the soujurn meta in early ov 2? Every match was decided on whose soujurn was better
Idk how hackfist could be considered meta when only Element Mystic ran it
My subscription isn’t drastic
You in fact can hit 20k subs before the end of October
