A Faster, Better and Easier Alternative to Slap Chop!

  • I actually got the idea from the comment section of a previous video, and while I will not take credit for inventing this technique, I felt compelled to experiment and report on what I found.
    And this method, which I am dubbing “Splash-Dash” ("splash" on wash, and "dash" contrast/speed paints afterwards) may be a game changer for me. I am for sure going to be using this instead of zenithal highlighting or slap chopping in the future!

    The irony here is that priming white then washing is an old speed painting technique from before the days of contrast media. I think I still have some old sisters of battle I never finished from like 15 years ago that are still in that state

      I am definitely a believer of tried and true ways, and not a fan of time-consuming fads like slapchop. It drives me nuts that that technique is so popular when older methods like this one, zenithal highlighting, and etc have been used successfully by painters for decades before.
      And I’m definitely not claiming this technique as my own. I acknowledged at the start of the video that someone else gave me this idea and gave full credit to them.

      I was going to say the same thing. Props to him, though. It’s good to see someone excel at a technique that was new to them.
      When it comes to me and SpeedPaints / Contrasts, I suck. A buddy of mine is just like this guy- first time he touches speedpaints it looks amazing.
      What are y’all doing differently?

      Every time i watch a slap chop video I can't help but think that. Why not prime grey or white, whatever and ink wash at the end?

      Mate...
      Slapchop is just a silly name attached to a much, much older technique called gresaille (grey scale) that's been used by artists for centuries.
      There's quicker ways of achieving similar results, but don't dismiss it as "new." it's just an old technique that people have rediscovered.

    Thank you for this video. I will be using Splash Dash on certain miniatures in the future. I think they both have their uses, as Slap Chop can give a darker, grittier, almost Grimdark look, so I will be using that for Oathsworn and Deep Madness. Splash Dash can give a brighter look as there isn't as much darkness in the shading, so I will be using that method to paint minis for games like Okko Chronicles: Cycle of Earth and Wander: The Cult of Barnacle Bay.

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup or you can use two coats of wash for the same darkness effect. Or not water the wash down so it’s more concentrated

    I've been doing this since I discovered similar techniques from military model painters. You can speed the process up even more by filling a container with your wash mix, and just dunking your miniatures head first into it.
    If your mix is runny enough, any excess will all pool down to base while it's drying, and you can basically shade whole platoon in the time it would take to dry rush a squad.

    for blood rage I used this technique for all small minis: white primer and nuln oil. one video used this method to easily replicate the sundrop finish from awaken realms, I think he called it DIY sundrop.
    I also like zenithal as base for speedpaints, especially for large minis. in the end result the difference is not that significant in my opinion.
    but I always like comparisons like these, thank you!

    I start to paint like a month ago and with my second figure I did that thing of paint it white and then apply wash because I think that could work for make shades, now I still make dry brush after the wash to get more white zones.
    I was wonder if someone in youtube tryed this too so im glad that i get by myself an idea that someone with more experience tryed too.

    You can have a lot lesser graininess with dry brush if you switch to using texture palette instead of paper towels. I use self healing mat for that. Paradoxically dry brush doesn't want to be too dry 😀

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s cool. I drybrush now and then depending on my project so I’ll definitely need to try a texture palette.

    This is a game changer. I haven't seen anyone else mention it but think about how much paint (and money) will be saved by not Dry Brushing and watering down the wash. Plus it is quicker.

  • @BDA1137

    Thank you for sharing, wonderful concept. After the "black wash", as may have been suggested, you can always to a "dry brush" or add a few minutes by using "white ink" and carefully highlighting specific areas.

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely! Extra highlighting can always take the mini the extra mile so yes if you have the time definitely highlight.

    I've done this quite a bit and quite like it, although I do tend to build up from black to white wash and re highlight to get an amazing amount of depth.
    When I use the wash though I have special bottle I've mixed up of 50/50 dark tone and wash medium, it really flows and doesn't coffee stain by doing it with my mix.

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah diluting the wash is key. It can be too much otherwise.

  • @mattcooper1664
    @mattcooper1664 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You can still go in with a final white drybrush after the wash is properly dry to catch sharp edges etc

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a good thought! The thinned down wash does allow a lot of the white primer to show so I don’t think it’s super necessary but it’s an option.

  • @albertmockel6245
    @albertmockel6245 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've been doing that too, but I dilute the blackwash and apply a second coat of diluted wash in the recesses only. It's way faster than dryb rushing and yields much better results.

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nice. That’s a good approach too, two coats of wash. Makes the effect more dramatic.

    I was interested in slapchop but don’t like the stark contrasts, the shadows are too black and the models look too grimy for my taste. I thought about grey with white dry brush but had never seen it in action. I’ve recently been thinking about a wash so great to find this.
    I was thinking of a white prime, grey oil wash and then I can use sponge or q-tips to remove the wash from all of the surfaces, I suspect it’ll make a nice smooth surface colour while still offering the shading for the contrast. Anyone know any examples of this?

  • @edevans5991

    I've used Gloss Nuln Oil for this. Currently experimenting with an oil wash which really gets down in crevices. Seem good for mech and tanks at least.

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah the wash acts like panel lining on vehicles and mechs. Once contrast or speedpaints go on, it looks very good.

      I was thinking of the same idea with an "oil wash". Can you apply Speed/Contrast on the "oil wash"? or do we need to varnish first?

    I moved away from slapchop. It is faster than standard painting and produces nice results on larger textured minis... But when doing smaller minis you just get really uneven black spots all over and its harder to hit certain areas even with a smaller brush. You also go through grey and white paint much faster. I use this method now, prime white, shade then paint. Looks better, is faster which you can use that extra time to take it even further if you want to. Never got why people say all of this is new though... Its ancient.

    • @no.6minis
      @no.6minis  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right there’s a lot of repackaging and rebranding of old techniques. I’m not a huge slapchop fan myself. Takes much more time for not superior results.

      Cool. Never knew it had a name. Will look that up! In any case it’s a fast and viable option that not many people use. Hopefully this helps give people another faster option to prep their minis.

      Thanks for the compliment on the video, at least! What do you do instead? Simple primer, or something else?
      Anyway, with speedpaints or contrast paints, a white-ish canvass is super important so this method, zenithal highlighting with an airbrush, or a simple white prime works best for me. Slap chop works for some, but it’s not my thing.
