The irony here is that priming white then washing is an old speed painting technique from before the days of contrast media. I think I still have some old sisters of battle I never finished from like 15 years ago that are still in that state

I am definitely a believer of tried and true ways, and not a fan of time-consuming fads like slapchop. It drives me nuts that that technique is so popular when older methods like this one, zenithal highlighting, and etc have been used successfully by painters for decades before.
And I’m definitely not claiming this technique as my own. I acknowledged at the start of the video that someone else gave me this idea and gave full credit to them.

I was going to say the same thing. Props to him, though. It’s good to see someone excel at a technique that was new to them.
When it comes to me and SpeedPaints / Contrasts, I suck. A buddy of mine is just like this guy- first time he touches speedpaints it looks amazing.
      What are y’all doing differently?

    • @peterclarke7240

      Mate...
Slapchop is just a silly name attached to a much, much older technique called gresaille (grey scale) that's been used by artists for centuries.
There's quicker ways of achieving similar results, but don't dismiss it as "new." it's just an old technique that people have rediscovered.

  • @peterclarke7240
    @peterclarke7240 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

I've been doing this since I discovered similar techniques from military model painters. You can speed the process up even more by filling a container with your wash mix, and just dunking your miniatures head first into it.
If your mix is runny enough, any excess will all pool down to base while it's drying, and you can basically shade whole platoon in the time it would take to dry rush a squad.

  • @kzr1973

You can have a lot lesser graininess with dry brush if you switch to using texture palette instead of paper towels. I use self healing mat for that. Paradoxically dry brush doesn't want to be too dry 😀

    • @no.6minis

I really like the drybrushed gritty look. I usually just use white for my slapchop and leave lots of places just black. After painting, I usually add some fine sawdust glue mix on the bases and then pigment powder (from crayons / similar). Quite often I just apply the pigment to the whole model, wash it off with something so that it is just in the recesses and then apply more to the legs & base in the end.

Thank you for this video. I will be using Splash Dash on certain miniatures in the future. I think they both have their uses, as Slap Chop can give a darker, grittier, almost Grimdark look, so I will be using that for Oathsworn and Deep Madness. Splash Dash can give a brighter look as there isn't as much darkness in the shading, so I will be using that method to paint minis for games like Okko Chronicles: Cycle of Earth and Wander: The Cult of Barnacle Bay.

    • @no.6minis

for blood rage I used this technique for all small minis: white primer and nuln oil. one video used this method to easily replicate the sundrop finish from awaken realms, I think he called it DIY sundrop.

I was interested in slapchop but don’t like the stark contrasts, the shadows are too black and the models look too grimy for my taste. I thought about grey with white dry brush but had never seen it in action. I’ve recently been thinking about a wash so great to find this.
I was thinking of a white prime, grey oil wash and then I can use sponge or q-tips to remove the wash from all of the surfaces, I suspect it’ll make a nice smooth surface colour while still offering the shading for the contrast. Anyone know any examples of this?

I moved away from slapchop. It is faster than standard painting and produces nice results on larger textured minis... But when doing smaller minis you just get really uneven black spots all over and its harder to hit certain areas even with a smaller brush. You also go through grey and white paint much faster. I use this method now, prime white, shade then paint. Looks better, is faster which you can use that extra time to take it even further if you want to. Never got why people say all of this is new though... Its ancient.
