    As a Honda tech I must say this was wonderful. There's a reason the K series has been around for over 20 years, it's the chevy LS of the import world. It's very modular, robust, and modifiable. Plus working on them is significantly easier than a B-series because of the cylinder head design. All comes down to great cylinder head design, more airflow= more power.

    Back when I used to have one of my first S13 240sx’s in 2007 me and my friend would sometimes trade cars for the day. He had a CLEAN RSX Type S that was still fresh at the time. I used to LOVE driving that car around and taking it into the high rpm’s. VTEC cracked so loudly and it was such a blast. Fast forward to 2016 my friend, Honda and overall JDM head, would pass away. Now the year is 2022 and I own my first Honda EVER. A 1992 Civic SI hatch. I’m planning on going K20A because it’s the first K series I loved so much. I wish so much I could show him my current car and take him for a drive. My build is inspired by him.

      Feel ya man. I had a similar situation. Flew 1000's of miles to grab a car a friend recommended from the classifieds (a '95 SC VR6 Jetta). We talked about it for months. Never told him I pulled the trigger, and was just gonna park next to him at work, so when he came out, he'd see it, surprise style. He passed the day before I got the car back. This was 2006. Coincidentally, he never seemed too excited about my '92 Si tho, that I've had since 2002. (Captiva Blue, AC intact, OG D16Z6 w/ 303k). Cars come and go, but it's a lot easier to get another car than a good friend.

    The K24 was a remarkable powerplant. I've been driving an 01 Accord F23A1 for twenty years now and it's a terrific car. My wife had an 06 Accord K24 for several years, and that car drove me NUTS. It was a bigger, heavier car, with a higher displacement engine that made more horsepower and more torque than mine and was both quicker and faster, yet consistently gave 2-3mpg better even driven hard. Made no sense at all, but there it was. :D :D

    Hey man don't forget about the K23 in the first generation Acura RDX!
    The red-headed stepchild of the k-series that was the only one that came turbocharged STOCK. Downside is at the engine block doesn't mate to anything other than the Acura trans BUT the head is swappable with any K-series AND water cooling ports for the intake with a turbo that sits on top/back of the engine.
    2.3L with the same bore as the K20 and if you can get a hold of that RDX engine you get piston rods OEM Honda that are 30% beefier than the TSX and can handle more torque than any of the other K-series (because it was turbo designed)
    Salvage a first gen RDX and you get:
    A turbo
    RDX injectors
    Beefiest OEM piston rods you can get.
    K-series head, with turbo ready exhaust and water cooled intake manifold.
    I'm doing an RDX Frankenstein build right now with my k24 in my Honda Element. Everything just swaps in and I bought the engine with the turbo for only $500 bucks with only 120,000 miles. Want a budget k-series turbo build? Go that route.

  • @AustinPerdue
    @AustinPerdue 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The K20A3 does have actual VTEC. The valve lift on the intake side is asymmetrical until VTEC engagement, which promotes high swirl (and more torque) at low RPM, while not choking the engine in the midrange. This is still VTEC, even if it operates differently than the VTEC found on the B series (and more like you'd find on some D series).
    It's also worth noting that "K20A" can refer to what is effectively the K20A3 in Japanese vehicles, as well as what's found in the RSX Type S or the Type R. They simply did not stamp the blocks the same as those destined for other markets. You have to look at the code on the head (or under the valve cover) to determine which engine a K20A is.

    • @rsndriedrain2752
      @rsndriedrain2752 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where is this code on the head or under the valve cover? I'm going to look at a K20A stamped block tomorrow. Would the JDM version of the 'K20A3" have the single exhaust lobe where as the A2 has 3 lobes on both cam shafts? I only want to buy the engine if its the A2 model.

    • @AustinPerdue
      @AustinPerdue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rsndriedrain2752 The code is stamped in a few places. I believe you should find one above the header, right in the center. The "K20A3" version will have a single exhaust lobe. It's quite a bit of info most of which a lot of the ones that have live the birth of the K have gotten to know and being able to properly squeeze all of this in 8 minutes was amazing. I feel like the F20/22C would have offered some great comparisons as well as it was the last attempt and truly the first attempt at 2.0 + chain drive incorporating the bitter sweet FRM + high comp. Ultimately landing with the addition of VCT which pushed tech into older minds. Honda has now moved into forced induction where most of this momentum is focused on turbo efficiency.

    These engines (B, D, F, H, K series) are so tough the only way to kill them would be when the owner neglects or abuses them.
    It is next to impossible to kill these engines daily driving them (on public roads).

    I put a AEM intake, K turn header, skunk 2 full cat back and a IBR high flow cat. In 2017 Honda released the type R in America
    Love to have a type R but the dealerships put a 10-15,000 mark up over MSRP. Honda if you want to know why the market for the type R fall so fast and the 2020 yellow Special edition was the only type R that sold in 2020.
    All I'm saying is that 10-15,000 over the MSRP you can buy the mods to eat any type R.
    Start selling your cars straight to the buyer. Don't even drop ship to a dealership at all. The ones in my location are starting to keep people cars and ask for ransom.

    • @4bidn1
      @4bidn1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That last statement is unequivocally false.
      While it may have originally bumped car and part prices up, f&f also introduced an entire generation to the world of cars and modding, and that extra interest meant a lot of people grew up to work in the auto industry in one way or another. The more interest a scene has, the more competition business' within that scene have, and the more competition business' have, the more time and effort goes into making parts affordable.. Progress and innovation bring with them the r&d that leads to cheaper parts over time.
      You can get a set of wheels today that are as good as a set made in '95 for much cheaper, suspension parts have become more advanced but stayed relatively similar in cost in the same time-span, tyre technology is exponentially better than it was back then and you can now get sport/track focussed tyres for cheaper than you used to be able to get them..
      Inflation is also a thing, which I think is probably a factor in what you're talking about.. Inflation has absolutely 0 to do with fast and the furious tho....

Gen 1 depending on which motor it is have some cast parts thY aren't good, while others have forged. Gen 2 basically all have forged internals but only cast pistons. Gen 3 most have VCM and it causes piston ring blow by and burning oil. So Gen 2 has the majority best engines through all years/models. If you want mod suggestions it's too much for YT comments. You can reach out to us HalferLand Performance. Or HondaJseriesEngine the dot and the com is our main site

    I love your videos but id like to point out the k20z3 balance shaft in the oil pump doesnt cavitate until about 8900 to 9000 rpm* not 8000 rpm. Fuel cutoff is at 8300 rpm and flashpro raises it to 8600 stock so the oil pump doesnt cavitate at 8000 rpm. The valve springs and retainers also dont float until about 9000 rpm either.

    Ah i want that H-series engine pic in real high detail for my desktop, I had the 200hp H22 swapped into a '92 prelude with a short ratio gearbox and lsd shipped from japan. It was my favorite car. I vtec'd it daily right up to 250k miles before I donated it to someone to fix it up, it was rough by then, and someone in need got the coolest car ever. That thing was so easy to drive on the limit, once a tiny bit of wheel screeching set it, it would about to understeer and you were at the max, so simple, smooth as butter shifts (another reason it was donated, the shifter had a hard time getting into 1st and 2nd after i retired it, getting a 350Z instead). That car was a LONG part of my life, from my early 20's through college, it's in my wedding photos all painted up. Thanks honda, thanks 337 speed for the memberberries.
    Edit, I tried a K20A2 in the rsx type and even though it should have been roughly the same, there was no kick, no hard crossover for the vtec, with ivtec, that let you know it was working, also i felt cramped in that car and wind blew me around like nothing else. I also test drove an s2000 before getting the Z, that was some serious fun, but I was ready for something with better low-end. Also it had the FULLY red interior and I don't think I could've lived with that very long either.

    It’s the cam profiles and valve size, and basically flow characteristics. Plus the rod to stroke ratio is perfect

    Haven't read through the comments but I was one of the first people to swap k24 out of a CRV and slap the k20a2 head on it. Long story but owned a 2005 EP3 with the k20a3. We put a RevHard turbo kit on it and we'll that didn't last long. 😉 worst k20 series IMO ever built. I lived in San Diego at the time (thank God) this is the time everyone was doing H22 swaps in del sols and crxs. Idk if some of you remember those days. Anyways I wanted something different. So I hooked up with a friend that works at Brian Crower in El Cajon. How lucky was I? LOL crank and pistons head work and cams all crower with the turbo kit. Anything under 4k rpm 3rd gear was WILD. I was chewing up SRTs and z06s on a roll on a daily even with 2 jl 10s in the hatch... Miss that car. 😪 But it's so crazy how far the K series has come.

    My son just purchased a 2005 TSX with 79K miles on it, he loves that car, just a nice step up from the 2000 Mazda Protege that looked like it was from the 90's.

    In June I bought a Black 2008 Honda Civic Si Coupe with only 12k miles. I love it, I’ve put Tint, Rims, and an AEM Cold Air Intake on it and it runs great.

    Great video but you forgot the k20z4 found in the fn2 type r which are bulletproof and are found in some of the fastest k series cars

    Outstanding delivery. Concise, coherent, easily digestible information, great image layout. Been wondering about k20/k24 for a while now. Answered a lot of my questions, and then some.

    I have a 13 ILX with the k24z7 manual right now as my daily. I love it peppy, rare, and reliable. Iv had a RSX type S and a Integra type R in the past. My ILX Is faster and more reliable than both of those cars stock. Now my RSX after the Hondata ripped, but broke my transmission. My type R I didn't like the 5 speed and it just felt outdated. When I say my type R I mean I bought a JDM b18c and swapped it in a EK lol. My point is I had 3 K series motors, and the z7 is the most reliable and fastest stock.
