Thank you sir! I have always loved Hondas. I am 39 and I still have a 709 whp EJ8 1997 Civic coupe with a fully built LSVTEC (B18 VTEC with a BIG turbo). I have also built a J32A turbo, six speed manual swapped 2001 Accord, and now I'm building a 2004 Acura TL with a six speed manual swap and a GTS3582 turbo.
It is mind blowing that Honda built a 200hp VTEC four cylinder engine in the early 1990’s, while other Japanese companies were still using V6’s or Turbo 4’s to make 190hp. Even American V8’s only pushed 220hp.
Most V8's in America are more intended for torque or smoothness. Not for the power. The few V8's actually being used for power put out a good average of 3-400 hp. Not down playing Honda of course, absolute legends
VTEC engines rely too much on extending the red line to achieve high HP numbers. You won't be able to rev that high in every day driving conditions. There's also the issue of low torque.
@@MrAnonymousRandom ehh, true, but not necessarily in thiss case. Throwing a 4cyl 200hp all motor engine in say, a mustang chassis, is stupid and overall would have the most negative torque/weight ratio of all time. But the thing about the 4cyl is the chassis’ that theyre used with. So theoretically, a 4cyl engine will perform (at least torque wise) to the standards of the owner trying to push power, whilst still maintaining high horsepower numbers. Vtec engines originally came N/A, therefore the vtec system naturally made more power as well as extended the rev range. As for torque, those small engines that love to rev up high, quickly through the powerband, don’t need this torque to match the hp acheived. And as for not being able to drive it everyday, there’s nothing that sleeves, e85, a fluctuating cooling system, and a good tune can’t do.
In the 90's HONDA, you'd get a hatchback with the same power as most turbo engines at that time. Because of no turbo and FWD, the car would be incredibly light, so more acceleration. The car also felt incredibly responsive and the torque delivery was consistent throughout the whole rev range. And then there's the suspension geometry of those old hatchbacks. You'd essentially get double wishbone suspension, which, again is unheard of in a FWD car. Because of Honda's meticulous suspensions tuning, you'd get a car which would very gently oversteer (not understeer as most FWD cars), giving you more rotation in the corner. Nothing comes close these days to old Hondas if you also factor in how low priced and reliable these cars were.
Yup~! I have a 90 integra 4 door and one of the nicest things about it, is with a decent but basic coil over setup, you have a REALLY nice neutral balanced car. Just a hint of understeer, but with the ability to get just that bit of oversteer to give it good rotation around tighter turns. even the B18 nonvtec engine is really good with some basic bolt ons and tuning. Really good torque and power for the size. They're really nimble cars. They're also the EASIEST cars to work on. Everything is pretty simple. You don't run into a lot of funky engineering when trying to work on them, just a few annoying quirks from being a RHD first car (alternator is under the brake master cylinder on LHD cars, making alternator swaps difficult compared to RHD cars)
Hondas from the late 80s to the early 2000s are essentially the best cars ever made all things considered. Especially the numble Civics, CRXs and Integras.
Old generation of Honda engineers. Putting racing DNA into economy cars for everyone. People who weren't even into racing would say "I like my civic, it's nice to drive."

Great episode 👍 I love my Civic with a b18c4 swapped in. @@trackshun its a motor from English, Rover based Civic Aerodeck (MB6/MC2). Out of factory its made to be economical, e.g. its head got lowest flow of any b series engine, it has stupid IAB and tiny exhaust to limit performance & improve efficiency; I guess its kinda similar to B18c1 - Integra GSR's motor
Hey thanks for the feature! That was a fun surprise haha. Also I just swapped a stock Integra GSR engine into my civic and with my turbo kit made 479whp. Stock internals. Pretty awesome.
"VTEC kicking in" has kinda become a meme but, man...you really DO feel it. Many moons ago, I had a 5th gen Prelude and was VERY surprised how pronounced it was. That car was gorgeous, too...had it less than a month when it was totaled. Hadn't even made a payment yet. I was heartbroken. RIP, 2001 Prelude.
Back in 2004 I put together a B18 swap with b16 transmission in my old 1991 Crx Hf along with numerous other mods , that car freaken ripped and took the abuse of being bounced off the Rev limiter numerous times a day just about every day of the 7 years that i owned and daily drove the car took out a lotta fox body mustangs with that b18 ,best engine family ever made Imho
It was that brrrrr sound the b18b made that was infectious. If you had any aftermarket intake on it after 4k rpm onward even more satisfying. Just that characteristic engine note was nice even if it was non VTEC.
I loved the b20vtec, plenty of torque that the b16/18 lacked for relaxed/street driving, and sounded even more amazing after hitting vtec. Now running a boosted b18 and it's a beast in itself :) Amazing how easy it is to make good power compared to other engines - when it puts down the same power NA as others are with boost
I love my b20v, my complaint with b16s and b18s is the lack of torque in traffic, and stop and go situations. with a b20v you have all the torque at low rpm
Those Hondas all had dual wishbone front suspensions during the 1990s. Civic stopped in 2000, Accord stopped in 2013, Acura TL stopped in 2016. Honda has slowly been getting rid of its dual wishbone fronts. I say this as an H series owner:)

What a well-researched and thoughtful video! I’d love to see you tackle other motors in the same way. The F series, or even other iconic motors like LS, etc.
even the humble D series was nothing to scoff at. Even the most basic versions were rev happy little engines. But for those who craved power, the B series made sense over building up a D series.
I have a D14Z1 with a D16Y2 VTEC head and intake from a 400.000 kilometer donor engine, and an aftermarket manifold + a tuned ecu to make all of it work. It's still capable of 40 MPG while revving to 7.700 RPM (the d14 block can rev higher than a d16 without killing itself in the process) Haven't measured the power but should be around 130 hp, it moves the 1 tonne chassis of my 1999 EJ9 really well. The D series is often overlooked over the B series but D series parts and mods are significantly cheaper in my experience and they get wonderful gas mileage.I have an LSD in my car as well. With some basic OEM strut bars and Koni street shocks it's a really fun package that you can drive like granny and get 40 mpg or hoon it around with good result.
God, I love these high revving Honda engines. The Sound, the power output and of course VTEC, which is undoubtedly a masterpiece of engineering! Now you have to do a video with the awesome S2000s F-Series. I'm lucky to own one since a few months. It makes so much fun with its 240HP and 9000RPM. It just screams for more revs. A dream has come true and I love to drive it so much.

Have a Del sol with a b16a3, Tanabe Medalion exhaust, intake and a tune and it is an absolute blast. Best powertrain setup for the cost. Good mpg, reliable, easy to repair, cheap parts, sounds amazing, super fun. VTEC go BRRRRRR
I had a del sol with a B16, an eg civic with a B16 which I sold to buy a S2000 and now I have a CRZ, but the B16 civic was by far the most fun. Great noise out of them, so fun to rev, planted to the ground.
Agreed 100%. Funnily enough, my dad owns both an ‘05 S2000 and a Milano red ‘95 Del Sol VTEC (B16A3), as well as an ‘02 RSX-S and ‘03 CL Type S 6MT (A lot I know, crazy ain’t it?). Out of all of them though, the Sol is easily the best sounding IMO and is my personal favorite.
Great video, especially love the old footage of the factories and Spoon racing in Best Motoring. Forgot to mention the ls motor. The b18a1/b1 non vtec 1.8 liter motors still performed quite well and if you also put a b16 head on them and chip the ecu it was an instant 200hp. A lot of people did this and the b20/vtec and didnt upgrade the bottom end for the higher revs. For that reason a lot of engines got destroyed over the years and now finding any unmolested b series vtec is dang near impossible. And thus the prices for them over here are going through the wazoo.

The aftermarket parts you need for k swaps are far more expensive, and there are a lot of them you will need. I drove a B16A2 swapped civic coupe (EJ8 - it originally had a D16 that bit the dust) for 5 years as a daily, and it was the most fun daily driver I've ever had. I've since turbocharged it and turned the car into a street/ track car. That one engine has lasted me 7 years and still revs to 8.5K regularly under 11PSI. It currently has 290000ish kms on the original stock head, but the pistons and sleeves had to be replaced with stronger aftermarket ones because of the stress. Nothing broke, I was just scared that it would. I'm glad it hasn't blown up yet considering B series are about as much as K series are now. The only person I know that has a turbo car as reliable as mine owns a 1JZ Toyota Soarer, but it's not as fun as the B series (he's wayyyyy faster in 1/4 mile and street tho, I only beat him at the track.)
My B16a was a pretty solid engine. Although it left a huge blue smoke trail behind whenever going WOT. Needed a top up of oil every 1000km. Only 130,000km at that stage..
I will put more trust in a 300k mile b16 banging 8k rpm daily than I would into a fresh L15 straight out of the factory. Once honda strayed away from that racing pedigree they had through the late 80's into the early 00's, things just went south... but thats just my $0.02
Oh yeah this makes so much sense to me. I'm a major engine head and totally a car guy so I understood everything said in this video. I even have some info to add to this.....
For sure the best Honda engine to consider for a project is the one you already have. To get serious power out of any of them, you can't go wrong with boost.
I don't find it a bad thing these things are an excellent engine for a little corner turner i pefer seeing them at home in the fwd platform not that its not cool seeing them in a rwd platform i just dont think that civics need rwd swaps like people give them rwd is good i love it but theres a place and purpose for everything

The reason B series engines are not used for RWD is that due to the orientation of the engine its designed to spin anti clockwise, you have to convert it to spin clockwise to make it work in a RWD application, and simply put its just not worth the effort when you could just use a K series instead.
@@AdityaKKannan well, technically two gears. It'd have to be pretty robust to handle the abuse and you'd lose power to the added friction, as well as adding weight. It doesn't really make sense, when you've just got the k series. I admit, it would be cool seeing a longitudinal b series though
@@AdityaKKannan I think it's more like your have to change the starter rotation, and switch to a different rotation cam to make it work. There are Chevrolet V8 engines that run counterclockwise for boats or something different, that just needed that.

Feel very blessed! I got myself my b18c1 swapped ej1 and my 09 si with k20z3 😍
Back in 2004 I put together a B18 swap with b16 transmission in my old 1991 Crx Hf along with numerous other mods , that car freaken ripped and took the abuse of being bounced off the Rev limiter numerous times a day just about every day of the 7 years that i owned and daily drove the car took out a lotta fox body mustangs with that b18 ,best engine family ever made Imho
basically it also looks beautiful with that symmetric square neat cam cover

29 and I still have my 98 ek hatch back with a b20 non Vtec b16 trans full bolt ons get some great runs from these motors aswell
B20v stock bottom with a built head. Chipped ecu no rev limiter, mega fun!!
@@bagfumbler I know what you mean, I love my b20b crv 5spd too. It chirps the tires when Im too heavy footed, b20v one day in the future.
they have plenty of torque for a lil crx or a hatch with bunch of weight reductions
B18b with cams and vtec pistons is already a beast
It’s simple they made 100 hp per liter unlike any car before add to a capable chassis it was the golden era of Honda engines
Not mine. 145hp for a B18. You had to have the R model to get that.
Damn that’s impressive
A Saab 9000 turbo has about 87HP per liter
I miss my b16a and k20a2, can't lie. The sound alone
I have a major issue with this video. V-tech doesn't "turn on". It kicks in yo!
Excellent video! I have an 03 RSX Type S with some bolt ons and absolutely love the K series but one day I will also own a B series build.
Those Hondas all had dual wishbone front suspensions during the 1990s. Civic stopped in 2000, Accord stopped in 2013, Acura TL stopped in 2016. Honda has slowly been getting rid of its dual wishbone fronts.
I say this as an H series owner:)
I love the B16. Easy to work on and bullet proof. only car i have ever rebuilt in the car with ease. love the k24s as well.
Love these new documentary videos you have now. Wow youve come a long way from simple compilations with no commentary, to amazing well researched videos like this speaking clearly in a language you didnt speak so well only a couple years ago. Inspirational !

It's because they are so reliable, parts are everywhere, eazy to work on and have decent power and run forever.

What a well-researched and thoughtful video! I’d love to see you tackle other motors in the same way. The F series, or even other iconic motors like LS, etc.
Thanks! Will do!
F series is basically a prototype for the K series
Double b18c owner ova hea :) got a stock one and and built one, 227bhp 173lb ft at the crank N/A. Awesome engines!… leaky tho lol
even the humble D series was nothing to scoff at.
It's still capable of 40 MPG while revving to 7.700 RPM (the d14 block can rev higher than a d16 without killing itself in the process)
Haven't measured the power but should be around 130 hp, it moves the 1 tonne chassis of my 1999 EJ9 really well.
Had a b18c1 dc2 gsr couple decades ago. I thought it had double vtec when I first got acquainted but it was the secondary butterflies opening. First time going WOT to 8k+ rpm was like waaaaa...WAAAAA *AAAAAAAAH*
The b16b and b18c5 are my favorite honda engines
Great video, especially love the old footage of the factories and Spoon racing in Best Motoring. Forgot to mention the ls motor. The b18a1/b1 non vtec 1.8 liter motors still performed quite well and if you also put a b16 head on them and chip the ecu it was an instant 200hp. A lot of people did this and the b20/vtec and didnt upgrade the bottom end for the higher revs. For that reason a lot of engines got destroyed over the years and now finding any unmolested b series vtec is dang near impossible. And thus the prices for them over here are going through the wazoo.
I love my B16a2 in the Em1 Si
finding cranks that aren't trash is hard especially. You cant turn them down if you trash a journal cause of the nitride coating on them.
@@kasuraga Correct. I sell honda parts to fund my own projects and can attest all B series stuff is hard to find these days. Especially crankshafts, cylinder heads, blocks, etc.
@@AcuraLvR82 It's probably cheaper to just do a kswap these days. I've got a b18 build that needs a full overhaul, including a B17 GSR transmission that needs to be gone through and all I think is "damn K series are getting cheap these days"
@@kasuraga Im at the finishing end of a k swap and I can assure you its definitely not cheaper. There is no such thing as cheap, no matter B or K series to do things the right way. Its nearly impossible to find any B or K car i the yards anymore, as most cars are being sold at auction by dealers exploiting the fact. The aftermarket parts you need for k swaps are far more expensive, and there are a lot of them you will need. Also replacement parts like timing chains, guides, etc are much more pricey and should only be purchased directly from Honda. Personally, im at about 5k in my swap and still have not finished exhaust yet. And thats after getting my k24a2 and 6 speed from a local u-pull.

The B16b will always be my poster hero engine! Maybe it lacks in certain segments compared to the larger 1.8L, but the sound alone makes it legendary!
That's what I ended up buying for my nostalgia build. I had the A2 in my 99 years ago, and it was FANTASTIC! It bet most cars it played against in those days, until the boost came in.

The lack of RWD conversions is probably because it rotates the wrong way for most other gearboxes
Hence the reason you see more people doing all wheel drive k series conversions 🤦🤷
I don't find it a bad thing these things are an excellent engine for a little corner turner i pefer seeing them at home in the fwd platform not that its not cool seeing them in a rwd platform i just dont think that civics need rwd swaps like people give them rwd is good i love it but theres a place and purpose for everything

The reason B series engines are not used for RWD is that due to the orientation of the engine its designed to spin anti clockwise, you have to convert it to spin clockwise to make it work in a RWD application, and simply put its just not worth the effort when you could just use a K series instead.
all it takes is one gear to make something anti clockwise spin clockwise though lol
@@AdityaKKannan but weight reduction
@@AdityaKKannan well, technically two gears. It'd have to be pretty robust to handle the abuse and you'd lose power to the added friction, as well as adding weight. It doesn't really make sense, when you've just got the k series. I admit, it would be cool seeing a longitudinal b series though
@@kamilzmich5961 In the UK b series engines are often fitted in rwd mk1&2 Ford escort.

Thank you for this truly awesome video! One thing I would like to note is his picture of the fuel economy add at 1:21 in the video. 67 mpg hwy an 51 mpg city. A Prius or Tesla has a difficult time achieving this level of fuel economy. Yet Honda did it in the 1980's. Where is that fuel efficiency today?
Weight plays a massive role. Both cars you mentioned weight 1000lbs more then the economy cars of old
On my list of stuff to own Honda sits firmly at the top, probably a small displacement bike like the Ruckus/Zoomer (NPS 50) because the GET engine is such an oddball being a water cooled scooter engine that is oversquare and has great aftermarket support.
