I wasn't bullied but I got fed up of shaving my legs constantly so went weeks without doing it during school and it's not nice having girls come over and ask why you don't shave as they screw their nose up. Every other girl who didn't want to shave like me just wore tights during winter but shaved all summer. It's sad really. The girls who question or might bully you probably don't fully understand why they're doing it because they've never thought to reflect on it it's that ingrained.

What makes me really sad is how the novel Lolita was never intended to portray a desirable young woman. Society was supposed to be beyond disgusted by the story, and to view the protagonist as a horribly twisted man lusting after childhood innocence.
The author was so successful in portraying this that the most disturbing aspect of the whole situation is how easy the media and pop culture managed to turn it into a glorification of pedophilia.

    • @saltiestsiren
      @saltiestsiren ปีที่แล้ว +477

Right. I guess it was supposed to be a mockery, or a parody, but not the "funny ha-ha" kind. Like horror novels/movies written/filmed in the perspective of the killer. (Kind of like what's-his-face in American Psycho, which was also a parody, and the Joker, who's just straight-up evil and not even trying to fake it but is still romanticized somehow.) Whoops, I guess?

Nabokov was not the inventor of the "Unreliable Narrator" genre, but I believe, he was a real genius and made this genre much more popular. He also made the book based on the real story of kidnapped American girl he was tracking in the newspaper. If Vladimir was alive today, he would be very, very ashamed how bad many people treat his story.

It feels like a version of the trope that provides the woman with much more agency, which makes her curiosity feel as though it is an attempt to reclaim a freedom that has been denied to her rather than turn her into an object of male desire.
That said, I can see the argument being made even if I don't see it the same way, and agree with the original point of woman's curiosity being fetishized in media.

Meanwhile if a dude is literally lookin like big foot, as long as he showers and wears deodorant it's completely hygienic???? Where's the logic exactly

This is absolutely not true. Women started shaving AGAINST the wishes of a man. It was revolution for women to shave. Please do not believe this. Companies will always expand their market for profit, but women were not coerced into shaving. Shaving for women was liberating and rebellious. It was compared to makeup, which was considered "unnatural" and "ungodly," therefore it was a religious sin to shave.

Growing up I was bullied relentlessly, for something I could not control, I begged my mom to let me shave my arms, I never wore tank tops, even when I was preschool age. The way this affected me growing up was traumatizing to say the least. So many nights staying up, having my mom veet my back hair so I could go swimming and not get laughed at. Lolita is truly a fascinating book in the aspect that the main character, our protagonist, is simultaneously the ANTAGONIST. Humbert is soft-spoken, likable, even funny at times that you FORGET that he is a P3DOPHILE (well, technically a hebeophile, but I digress). He is truly a monster who manipulated everyone around him to get close to his chosen prey. Dolores was playful, coy, flirtatious even but that doesn’t mean she consented to what happened to her. She may understand what she’s doing, but didn’t fully comprehend it. She was a child with very little supervision who had a grown man assault her and trap her in an unbelievably abusive situation. The fact that this movie became a style icon and a romantic love story perpetuated by people like Lana Del Rey is so incredibly alarming to me. Lolita was 12. She was in the 6th grade practically. This book truly encapsulates the complex, confusing, and blaming game that is child abuse.
I was a victim of child grooming around Lolita’s age and it nearly destroyed my views on healthy sexuality, men, and my own body. If I wasn’t attractive, I wasn’t anything. There was constant pressure to look girlish and cute and petite and delicate and perfect. Why can’t we address the fact that men are so obsessed with porn, they can’t even differentiate between a real person and a perverted sexual fantasy?

Unfortunately the world we live on has its roots planted in patriarchal and capitalist white supremacy. The state - similar to a facist states outward looking for enemies - needs to look within for people to victimize so as to constantly reaffirm its position at the top of the hierarchy and it's done this by creating more tiny hierarchies and imtrenching the means to violence within them.
Example, cops are stooges of the state, themselves prisoners in a system that trains them to view themselves outside of the people they (are supposed too) protect. You could argue that cops are victims of the state because of this brainwashing into violent thugs that many go through in training classes like "killology" (a real, not at all made up seminar that teaches cops yo kill people better) but being set at the top of a heirchiacal power structure, the state gives them permission to enact brutal violence onto us. Not as a way to rehabilitate or help communities, rather as a more insidious message that you are not in control and your system could choose to take you at any time if you ever step out of line.
Imo anarchy and mutual aid seem pretty dope a lot of the time and our decision to charge people for basic human necessities is where we went wrong.

These are the reasons when there are no reasons because racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, classism, are all reason-less. They are structures of control and oppression that intrinsically make no sense, and have no legitimate basis. Oppression is counter-intuitive, detrimental to the progress of the humanity... as we are now unfortunately experiencing with the climate crisis. These structures will always yield useless behaviors, products, social norms, laws, etc.

I have had ex boyfriends who said if I didn’t shave my legs, underarms, and private areas they would break up with me. Then I met my now fiancé who told me he really doesn’t care whether I have hair or not because it’s just hair and as long as I’m clean, it doesn’t matter. I knew he was a keeper after that. He truly just loves me for me and not for my looks. Since then I haven’t shaved nearly as often as I used to and he hasn’t once cared or noticed it. Talking about women and shaving always reminds me of high school and how our news thing was doing a bit on No shave November. I was in the cafeteria and walked over to my friend in the news class and her classmate who I didn't know and asked to be interviewed. I was met with severe confusion as "It's only for the boys? How could you participate?" to which I say "I haven't shaved since November started!" and rolled up my jeans to reveal my hairy legs. With how the girl cringed in disgust and threw herself away from me, shielding herself with her arms, you'd think she saw my leg slathered in dog doodoo or something. But no, it was just week and a half long leg hair.
She was so genuinely horrified and disgusted she instantly begged me to put my pant leg back down because that was, and I quote because I can't forget this, "nasty as hell." I was like "?????????????? It's just leg hair. Why are you freaking out." And they wouldn't let me participate.

The manic pixie dream girl trope negatively affects those of us on the autism spectrum. Sure, if helped us be seen as "cute" and not weird, but at the same time it infantilizes us. And the only girls who get that "cute" pass are those who are society's idea of beauty but with dyed hair.
Everyone compared me to Ramona Flowers in college, it took me two years to find out that was more of an insult than anything else.
The whole infantilism of autistic women is seen on TikTok too, where we are marketed as cute and child-like.

I'm extremely hairy (dark and thick) thanks to my ethnicity and I gave up controlling it. In school the boys (and even girls occasionally but not as much) would always mock me for my hairy arms and legs, once even a teacher made a comment. But at the exact same time, I was complimented on my long lashes, thick eyebrows, and very long and thick hair! Why rip out the hair on certain parts of my body except for the long hair on my eyes and head because that is okay? It just stopped making sense to me. My hair grew back dark the morning after shaving anyway. I still feel so self-conscious when I go out leg hair blowing in the wind but I'm trying not to care.

You're right it doesn't make sense. Your leg hair is just like any other hair you have.
In school, children are often very teasing, they haven't had much experience to form a real opinion. I'm sorry, again, that you went through that.

Though I did get made fun of because I was literally in 2nd or 3rd grade with hairy arms and legs and you know children are demons lol. I'm 17 now but I still have my hair and most girls at my school too, but ever since westernization is growing day by day it is frowned upon, even I myself didn't like and wanted to removed it. But now I know that it's part of my body and my hair genes and it's nothing to feel wrong about. My thick eyebrows, long lashes and thick head hair are always complimented. I just started to remove my underarm hair last year though because I sweat a lot and hair holds onto moisture and it felt very gross and smelly. Aside from... everything else... the amount of time, effort and discomfort from hair removal can be huge, it's a massive thing to expect of someone. I have thick hair and sensitive skin, but shaved for years due to social pressure. My hair would grow back to stubble every single day, so I just constantly had stubble on my body. It was itchy and sore, it made me sweat more, I got ingrown hairs, always had little accidental cuts, my skin looked blotchy/spotty and became super sensitive to soap/deodorant (even though I used fresh, clean razors, moisturised etc.) and even when I was freshly shaved you could still see dark hair under the surface so it didn't look 'good'. I tried waxing but most of the hair stayed rooted and my skin bled. I tried hair removal creams and they had no effect (none!) even if I left them on past the recommended time till my skin started to burn. I would spend so much time every day trying to remove hair (so much of my precious time wasted!) and I was always uncomfortable... all this so I could just be 'acceptable' to leave the house, all while I was trying to work and study and have fun. Insane. Not to mention I was SO paranoid about being freshly shaved before someone might touch my body, because if I hadn't shaved everywhere in the few hours beforehand I'd be stubbly and scratchy and uncomfortable. So glad I said "fuck this" and stopped shaving years ago.

I’m the same. Instant stubble! I never understood how anyone could shave and then be hairless for a while because I always grew my hair back immediately. Also, my mom always told me I didn’t need to shave above my knee because nothing grew there. Ummm I have dark coarse hair all over my thighs. I was always so ashamed in high school because I wasn’t supposed to have to shave there. Now I haven’t shaved anything for a few years but I still am very self conscious about wearing shorts in the summer. Maybe someday I’ll be confident enough…

I am a teenager and honestly the pressure is real, i dont shave or wear makeup because i know i do it for the wrong reasons and become insecure. My friends at school do wear makeup and shave and i feel bad seeing that they feel the need to shave for boyfriends and i was told by one friend her ex boyfriend made her so insecure of her leg hair because he called her really nasty names, she was 15. I still sometimes feel pressure to do these things to feel pretty by others standards but i really dont want to. Theres also shame within families, my parents would sometimes dress code me even when we would go out together, or i would get asked if i want to do my makeup when seeing family. Its like they are ashamed of the part of me that make me human sometimes. This is in no way to bash girls and women who do wear makeup or shave but to tell my story as someone who doesnt because of how i will be viewed differently especially by men. I like who i am and i wont change myself to feel pretty for others.

I was hanging out with my friend (a girl) and was wearing short sleeves. She said something along the lines of "Your arms are so hairy!" and I was sure she was going to mock me for it. Instead, she started running her hand over my arm and saying "It's so soft!" I don't know why that was thing that made me comfortable with my body hair again, but I've never shaved because of it.

    As a girl, I don’t shave/wax my legs because I think it’s pointless.
“Oh its for hygiene purposes and stuff” Oh really? Brushing your teeth and showering is for hygiene purposes. Leg hair has nothing to do with it. If it was a problem, EVERYONE would do it. The only advantage to removing leg hair is for when you do competitive bike racing and you fall off your bike, you don’t lose large swaths of skin when you fall off. That’s it.
There is no point to shave/wax other than aesthetics. And very weird aesthetics too.
Leg hair is not problematic in any way until you try to remove it, and then suddenly its problematic in that its incredibly expensive.
Personally, I find both shaving and waxing to be very painful, and found them to be frequently required. Why is it worth it? Why? Someone please explain to me. I’ve recently given up on it all together because I could not justify it.
Not to mention, WHY IS SOMEONE STARING AT YOUR LEG HAIR? Does it offend you that one hair on my legs is still there? WHY? ITS ONE HAIR!
The thing is, tho, now that I’ve stopped removing it, everyone around me seems to be silently judging me for not removing it. Isn’t it my choice on how I treat my body? And I’m not causing harm to anyone else or my self?

I'm a man, and I shave my armpits, and my parts. Since these are the most unsanitary areas, I make them as sanitary as possible. Not just form myself, but others.

Shaving your hair doesn't increase risk of infection or any other risk, it's just uncomfortable. If you're worried about razors, you should use a trimmer (electric razor), so you don't remove the entire exposed hair, just the vast majority of it.
Having hair on your body is inherently unhygenic, especially if you don't frequently shower, removing this hair removes surfaces for dirt, sweat, urine, etc to sit, so less bacteral growth is present, meaning you are more hygenic.
Body hair, on other parts of the body, were there to maintain temperature, on the pubic area to reduce friction, this is basically a non-issue in modern society, people have clothing, and lube.
No one wants to go down on their partner and eat hair, it's horrid, especially pissy sweaty hair. Remove it, or at the least trim it, otherwise don't expect people to go down on you. I wouldn't if I had a full bush around my parts. It's not about societal standards for women, it's not about 'women looking younger', it's about common decency with your sexual partner. (Now, if you don't have one, sure, do whatever, no one is going near it anyway, lmao)
For reference, I am a man, I shave my body hair almost every time I bathe/shower, I do no expect women to want to go down on me while I've got any bush at all, no one wants to deal with hair. It is more hygenic in general, since there's less places for sweat to stick to on my body, and I smell and feel fresher for it.
I'm not saying women, or men, SHOULD do it, I'm saying, be decent to your partners, you don't have to shave if you don't want, but, don't expect certain sexual acts because of it.

@@autumn5592 Shaving causes micro abrasions, and micro abrasions increase the likelihood of acquiring an STI. Body hair can also be washed. If someone has body hair, they can even shower before intimacy. That’s a pretty good practice for everyone. It’s ok for you to have personal preferences; just like it’s ok for everyone else to have their own unique preferences for body hair, or lack there of. The argument that simply having body hair is unhygienic is false. As long as people shower on a regular basis, the opposite is actually true. Consult some peer reviewed medical journals. Ask a few doctors. Shaving isn’t a necessity; it’s a preference.

I'm remembering of a day earlier this year when I was walking around my house in a tank top because it was so hot, I was in the kitchen minding my business when my dad walked in, he looked at me and said: "girl, go shave that, that isn't normal!". He was talking about my armpits. I looked at him with my best "I can't believe you said that" face and said: "ok". I didn't, because I didn't want to. But I still can't believe he had the courage to tell me, a 20 year old woman at the time, that having body hair is not normal

My dad and my mom both say things that they don't need to, its like they don't think of what to say before it comes out of their mouth. Like where did "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it at all" go, does that concept just disappear when they become parents? Most of the time if they say something like, what you mentioned, I normally just say "ok" and walk away and don't do what they want me to do. I'm 16 btw

Yeah, it's sad that men have girl children while remaining so terribly ignorant of normal development for a girl
