That is really fast for early 90s on a car ~ 1 tonne heavy (my current E and CLS weight around 1,7-1,8, modern C-class - 1,5 tonnes))))) And google a Nardo endurance average speed record - 3 modified BASIC (not a DTM) cars made a non stop (except for short pit stops for refueling, oul and pilot swaps) 50 000 km on AVERAGE speed of 249,7 KM/H. It still holds, as far as i know)) But those cars had different gear ratios. Real road versions are actually struggling above 200kmh. They are made more for tight roads slalom. Though they differ a lot from road versions. Totally custom suspension (road ones are only different from "plain" 190s by different shock absorbers with SLS system and quicker ratio wormgear steering box, track ones had several variants of suspension geometry - usually 2 H-Arms back instead of a 5 link and steering rack instead of a steering box front ), different gearboxes, totally different ITB intake and phased injection (Against a contionius KE-Jetronic injection, basically a glorified elctronic carburator) , VANOSes, modified block with reinforcing ribs and a 5 atm oil pump from a diesel mounted below the block instead of a conventional 3 atm pump in the front cover. You can actually come across simpler 2.3-16 or 2.5-16 cars for reasonable prices (10-15 k USD) - and i totally reccommend that. They are easy to fix (apart from Cosworth sourced parts like a new engine head, crank, getrag dog-leag gearbox and SLS suspension components, these parts are hard to find and way too costly), extremely fun to drive (but thats mostly a BMW like, not a Mercedes experience))), can be tuned almost up to DTM level given enough money). I've bought a replica of 2.5-16 some years ago - all the internal parts swapped to a 2.3 common bodyshell, it was easier to get it in russia that way, customs fees are extreme and for some time it was impossible to import cars below euro-4, that is still barely possible now(((. Still fixing and tuning it, but hell, its a funny car to drive. It drives really better than 2008 E200 and 2013 CLS350. At the time this engine was developed, Mercedes and AMG were different companies. Mercedes had no experience with 4-Valve heads so Cosworth was commissioned to built one. Based on that engine AMG built up the DTM car.

Those DTM cars aint AMG, they are Cosworth (Lotus engines producer) developed. Mercedes has not yet bough AMG at those times. Google 190e 2.5-16 evo
