    One cool thing about Agent Smith’s role in this movie is that he’s pretty much the angel of death for this mythology. Also, while Neo is the One, Smith is the Many. And it’s really appropriate that he wanted to kill everything in the Matrix, human and AI program alike, allow the Machines to kill the humans in the real world, then infect all the Machines and shut them down, destroying everything he can spread to, made him the virus that he compared humans to in the first movie. And it’s ironic for the Machines that they were created by humans and then rose up and overthrew them, but then they create programs like Smith and he rose up and tried to do the same to them. It’s no wonder they made a deal with Neo; they were scared out of their minds because they knew how this kind of thing ended, since they’d done it before.

      And the best part is that, Smith would have been annihilated during the beginning of Matrix 2 during the burly brawl if Neo had let him copy himself over him helping him to cancel off both their codes
      but that wouldnt have allowed the machines to agree to a peace. Also, Neo didnt know any of that yet.
      So all those events had to transpire and for Smith to threaten the entire Matrix of the machine networks for them to agree to Neo's deal.
      So while Neo by himself was a clever, cunning tactic of control by machines over past 5 iterations, this time around it was different because of the devil, the anti-neo, Smith.
      It had to be both for the peace to occur. These are the things that Oracle was hinting little by little during all those conversations and it is so rewarding on rewatches.

      @@graceonfilmsnstuff I always thought that Smith got destroyed not just because he overwrote Neo but because of the fact that Neo was hooked directly to the machine source that Smith had freed himself from, allowing the machine leadership to scrub his infestation from the matrix

    • @graceonfilmsnstuff
      @graceonfilmsnstuff 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rookie1178 no, the machine source is only to negotiate with the architect in the machine city plus any such primary figures they have.
      Neo, just needs to be in the Matrix to do what he did and doesn't matter where he plugs in from.
      Also Smith being returned to the source is not what Neo is doing. the source is aware of the Smiths. The source is running the Matrix. but they cannot do anything. he is an unplugged errant code, and the opposite one that Neo carries in him.

      @@graceonfilmsnstuff Neo literally did not need to be in the matrix to affect the machines at the end. The end is.. special.
      Which is why i'm very skeptical of a 4th movie. The trilogy was perfectly concluded (at least as far as Neo and Smith go). And they even said it's complete. But now making a 4th one.. Has high potential to be bad.

    I get how you all can feel like the rescue Neo plot at the beginning was pointless, but I think it was important to get Neo separated from his friends at that point. He'd just had his entire worldview shattered with no idea what to do. Meeting the programs at the train station proved to Neo that not only were programs not evil, they were becoming more human-like and "felt" like humans do. He'd been surrounded by fellow humans whose whole purpose for being was to win the war and destroy the Matrix, but that perspective was too narrow and had no realistic solutions. It took being left to process that and just being allowed to interact with the other side compassionately that he's able to see a way he might resolve the conflict.
    I really liked that you guys just kind of rolled with the film even if you didn't completely understand it. Not everything needs to be perfectly explained, though there's an in-universe explanation for most mysteries that you can extrapolate through inference. I'd encourage both of you to re-watch the films maybe in a year or two and you may just discover things about the films you didn't realize before that'll enrich the experience. I know doing that has done that for me.

    The reason Neo brought peace instead of machine destruction is because war is what every other version of matrix ended with and every other chosen one did the same thing, Neo decided to do something new to bring peace. That is largely because he could see that not all “programs” are bad, look at Oracle and Sati. Even Architect doesn’t look like a stereotype villain, he is kind of fine with peace, he just didn’t consider it.

    part of the reason people remmeber this movie as being that bad is because this came out before a lot of the japanese style story telling had made its way into the american movies and shows. what that means is that the japanese style ending where people die and the ending is ambiguous was like a shock to the system for most. now when people go back the story line is not as shocking because its something we have exposure to and is a viable option for storytelling in movies.
    i persoanally thought this movie was alright but i was big on anime when this movie came out and i even had a decent stint in the matrix online mmorpg.... (you want to talk about bad that game had literal rock paper scissors combat look it up on youtube since it went offline in 2006)
    i am very interested to see where the new movie takes the series since they are continueing down roughly the expanded universe story that was in place with the machines refusing to return neo's body leading the zion faction to beleive he might still be alive some how.
    also there were 3 factions in the expanded universe games zionist like morpheus etc, machinists who sided with the matrix and wanted everyone put back in the matrix the way cypher did, and the merovingian (rogue programs) who likes the way the things are and wanted the matrix to basically become like a video game people jack into and out of at will while running around superjumping and shooting eachother for money etc.

    The ending of this movie and the trilogy in particular fits perfectly. As the "Oracle" explains in the scene with Neo: He is the equation and Smith the attempt to balance the equation out (reference to mathematics). Smith is Neo's negative. There is no Yin without the Yang. In the end Neo understands, that the only way to neutralize Smith is to get neutralized first. Without the initial equation or the Yin, there is no need to balance it out, so no need for Yang. Also I like the idea that a Hollywood blockbuster movie has no typical cliche ending in which the "opponent" gets defeated and the "good guys" win.

    Fun fact: Sati, her parents, the Merovingian, Trainman, Key-maker, etc, are Exiles. Exiles are fragments from the previous integrations of the Matrix that went into hiding so the Agents and other security programs couldn't terminate them when the Matrix got rebooted.
    Since they are old programs, the current Matrix can't register them properly so it writes them off as mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, angels, and various others. This is why the twins could become incorporeal (phase through solid objects) and how Seraph's code is gold instead of the standard green because it reads him as an angel/firewall who protects the Oracle...

    And their fight... Shockwaves breaking everything from each hit reminds me of Superman vs Doomsday in the comics... Man of Steel was still a decade away, so this was the absolute closest i thought we'd get to ever see a proper Superman fight on screen! The dock battle... To see the progression of loss as it got darker each time they had a status establishing shot to the point everything was a black cloud inside that dome and the articulation of each and every sentinel still destroying?! The reason alot of people dislike the third one was because Reloaded & Revolutions were shot at the same time and released in the same year, 6 months apart. So coming from the action heavy 2nd film to a more defined finale threw people off.

      At the time, it was almost 20 years since the last Superman film, Superman 5: The Quest For Peace in 1987. WB executives saw what the Wachowskis were doing with fight cinematography and digital replacement for the actors that a Superman film could be done. Audiences were getting more knowledgeable with spotting poor special effects at the time and didn't think they could convince a modern audience that a "man could fly". The Matrix changed that. Not only with visual proof that it could be done, but with box office $ to back it up.

    Neo couldn't see anything, but he could see the machines, in the same way the machines see themselves and each other. Because Neo is the son of the Architect and the Oracle. When they refer to him as an anomaly, he is the result of an algorithmic overflow error, which somehow always results in Neo's A.I. "soul" ending up in a human body plugged into the Matrix. Neo doesn't know he's just another rogue program. Agent Anderson.

    For me entertainment comes first in a movie. If I was thoroughly entertained by it, then the movie has done its job. If it happens to be a “Good” movie and that means character development, stellar performances, a very well written script, brilliant concepts, etc. then that’s a bonus to me. You’re not gonna get a “Classic” or a “Masterpiece” every time. But if you can enjoy something that moves you, then all of that doesn’t matter.

    Every time I see how Neo destroys the Smiths in this movie I think of one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, when his witch Esme Weatherwax defeats vampires by letting them bite her - and driving them crazy by passing her traits to them in a feedback effect. "I ain't been vampired. You've been Weatherwaxed." They end up talking like her and getting a terrible craving for cups of tea.

    When this movie came out there was a big push back against cgi too. It was finally getting closer to photo realistic and was turning up in every movie whether it was necessary or not. There was a decent percentage of people who were just annoyed with it, and that definitely showed in its initial reception. Add to that this wasn't a cerebral as the first, or as well fight choreographed as the second, and it's understandable why this one is often ranked last in the trilogy

    Although never fully confirmed, it's strongly hints that the "real world" is just another level of the matrix, hence why Neo has powers in the real world. It seems that both the Architect and The Oracle know this, and The Oracle helps the revolution out of pity for humanity, as she feels they're a lost cause. It seems as if her outlook on all of it is like what Morpheus says in the first film; "What IS real?" She knows that if humanity feels it can successfully revolt, they'll have a much happier existence (through suffering, as agent smith says) than if they were to feel truly doomed and unable to escape The Matrix.

    Awesome reaction guys! Regarding the whole opening with the Train Man and the Merovingian, I feel that whole part reinforces the concept that there are programs that don’t want to play by the rules as well as reminding us of the strong connection between Neo and Trinity. Now, what will really blow your mind is…what if Agent Smith wasn’t the first program to make it out of the Matrix and into the real world? What if someone we trust like Morpheus was a program this whole time? What if the “real world” is just another layer of the Matrix that the Source uses to control rogue programs? 🤔

    • @retorik7246
      @retorik7246 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Merovingian like any organism don't want to die, he is programmed like that as we are programmed to fight or flee. The chose was made for him to be destroyed so he tried to survive. The same chose was made for the first self aware machine that began this war, people made the choice to destroy it, so it killed its masters to survive. Then all mankind made the choice to destroy all machines, they defended themselves, and won. If the rules are against you, you break them. Not wanting to play by the rules is not an option when the rule demand your death.

    I think people were disappointed in this film because they didn't receive the ending they were expecting or hoping for. From back in the first film, the machines were presented as evil overlords cruelly manipulating and subjugating humanity. But if you watch the sequels more closely (and The Animatrix), you realize that the machines aren't as evil as we were lead to believe. Yeah, what they've done to humanity is fucked up, but humanity was really shitty to them too. Now they're forever locked in this codependent relationship with each other. But people wanted the Matrix to be destroyed, all the humans to be freed, and the machines to be defeated in this incredible moment of fist-pumping triumph. But they didn't get that, so they were let down when Neo negotiated a peace deal and then sacrificed himself to Smith.

    • @Hero3life
      @Hero3life 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darkzler Go watch matrix explained and you might end up changing your mind about that comparison. Not saying you are wrong about Game of Thrones, but The Matrix is much, much better than you think. Most people see the story as machines are bad, and humans are good. This is because of what they are 'forcing' humans to do, and the ending was a let down because the 'enemy' wasn't defeated.
      But, when you learn about the entire story it makes so much sense as to WHY the machines are doing it. A lot of the history before the matrix was created is shown in the movie as symbols or even paintings, in the environments that surround the characters. Remember, this is the 6th version of the matrix. Many wars raged and 5 wildly different versions of the matrix were created before the story you see in the movie. I wouldn't immediately call it a let down because the movie wasn't able to convey this message in it's trilogy completely. There are extra bits of information scattered amongst the games, Enter the Matrix, and also the Animatrix. I would give it a shot, to see if this is a bit more interesting to you and also, It will make the 4th movie all that much better when you REALLY understand the story.
      You have to see how deep the rabbit hole goes, my friend. ;)

    The first movie has matrix and the real world 50/50 for introduction of the both. The second movie has matrix 90% and the real world 10%, the struggle to free themselves and humanity from the matrix continues. The 3rd movie is 90% real world and 10% matrix, the struggle to free themselves in the real world. It's a very well thought triology. The meaning of it all is to get free from the matrix not to get in so the more we watch the more real world! I like all of them and especially the war speech of the capitan..."If it's our time to die, it's our time... but if we have to give these bastards our lives... WE GIVE EM HELL BEFORE WE DOOO" , chills to this day!

    There were not enough consequences for Neo in the sequels because he's so powerful. For example In the"Matrix Reloaded" the writer could have added more weight to the plot.
    When Agent Smith attacks Neo in the courtyard while he's talking to the Oracle. Then it would scare us to death because Neo and Sarif had to protect the Oracle from Agent Smith and we would fear his power even more.
    Plus it could have given him the idea to go after the Oracle in Matrix Revolutions.

    People dislike The Matrix sequels simply because they aren't what the first film was, which was mostly cyber-punk/kung-fu action. The sequels delve more into the "real world" and the conflict with the machines as well as more philosophy and so it flies over most people's head as well as just not being what they wanted. But once you accept what the sequels are, they are actually exceptionally well done. I remember when Reloaded first came out and people were just baffled by the Architect. But if you actually pay attention to what he's saying it all makes sense and flows with the themes the film is trying to present.
    I love the original. I also love the sequels. They are all great films and tell a complete story.
