That's one of the things I love about St. Anger. The album sounds so angry, thrashy, and raw.
Mike is such a lovely guy and is really into helping up and coming drummers. i work FOH sound engineer, working the festival circuit here in america and then australia , uk, germany circuits , and have had the opportunity to meet him. i am also female and a drummer, the whole time i spoke to him, he wanted to here about me and how i have worked my way through a very male oriented profession. i had a heap of questions i wanted to ask him about his life and he just wasn't interested at all , no massive ego which is rare these days ! i got a free drum lesson as well, not on the kit but talking about the kit and he is the most knowledgeable drummer i have ever met.

Well, depending on the part, backing vocals typically are more just to add in harmonies rather than having a nice vocal texture. So even if you are a bad vocalist, you usually can pull off backing vocals just fine. But more over, drumming and singing at the same time usually don't mesh well. It's just too much splitting of attention to have both the drums and vocals sound nice. Some people can pull it off, but those are outliers, and they usually tone down the complexity of the drums during their vocal sections. This is one of the reasons you usually don't have the drummer be the main vocalist of any band.
