Well done on the method. I work at a STIHL shop myself. Only suggestions to make it easier would be that if you just take 4 arm lengths and cut it. Put each end in the spool as you did and spool it till you're left with a short loop. Latch each edge in the notches built into the spool for holding your line while putting the spool into the head and cut the loop of line. Pull the line from the edge of the spool into the appropriate eyelet and they hold themselves there. Put your faceplate on and go. Otherwise this is super helpful and will recommend it for people who don't have time in the shop. My method would just save you the time of measuring two seperate pieces cause you can cut it at the very end, the spool is built and designed for that. The notches on the top edge of the spool opposite each other. And the effort of holding the line once it's been spooled, hooking it into the notch on the top of the spool removes that risk/effort of holding it from unwinding completely.
Those are super great tips from a guy who has owned a Stihl string trimmer for probably 15 years and never completely done it the best way like you described. Thanks a lot!
Simple but genius!!! After watching your video, I had 5 yards to do and when I went to do the weed eating I was out a string and tried your method and it worked fantastic!!!Thanks so much for sharing, hope you have a great day!!!!👍😃
Thank you bunches. Always been a hard working chick but never have I ever used a weed whacker b4. Kind of proud that with a little of your help and my Jack of all trade skills I got all around the house, and edges. Thanks darlin.
Tip: If you notice more line breakage than what you feel is normal, drop your roll of unused line in a bucket of water for a day or two. Old line can become brittle and a good soaking can reverse this from happening. This is equally true with a new roll of line as there is no way of knowing how many seasons it was on the shelf prior to your purchase.
Never heard that before. I wouldn’t have thought the plastic string would soak up water. Today I was working on restringing and cursing the string. I’ll go soak it immediately.
The best video on this topic that I've found. Giving us the perfect perspective, enabling us to see exactly what's being done. This other guy had the side of the spool facing us but you couldn't see what he was doing with one of the lines.
You missed a very important and useful feature of the spool: There are a couple of roundish notches on the rims of the spool to hold the ends of the line so you can install it without holding on to the ends. Also some spools allow you to just bend the 24 feet of string in two and not have to cut it in two.
I have stihl fs90r I caught that also. I clean dirt out of mine before anything I don`t cut my line til it`s all put back together use ball hitch on truck stretch it to back door of truck gives me proper length ball holds it tight while I roll it up. I maintain a few yards for extra money his way is good also you dont always have a ball hitch

Great Video. I can't believe how I struggled with this task. It took forever and of course when you are trying to get a job done, you get frustrated when things aren;t going right. I used your method and got restung and whacking again in just a couple of minutes. Thank you!
My late mother purchased the original Weedeater after seeing a comercial on TV in mid 70's. I have used one ever since. I wish you were around when I started because you made a great video and this is very helpful.
I can't thank you enough for this! Doing this was hell for my husband every year, but since he passed in October, it's become mine. Until now! You broke it down perfectly. Took me less than 5 minutes and it worked flawlessly. I will definitely keep watching as I have so much to learn. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!!!
I’ve been asking my husband for years to put in new string and he has always done it but felt annoyed that I always had to wait until he had time. So it was time a learned to do it myself, this was the first video I watched and was able to get it in my first try...thank you!
Now you know that you can do a lot of things without your husband's help. I have learned this lesson also and now I'm very good at weed eating , using our farm tractor for various things by myself I would like to learn to operate an excavator and learn how to weld. LOL good for you! Keep going.
Good well executed video. Instead of holding the reel stationary, I hold the 2 sections of string on either side of my middle finger of one hand and hold the reel on top and bottom with the other hand then spin the reel in my hand. This keeps them from twisting and takes even more time off. Thanks!
I bought my first trimmer 4 years ago and yes spent money for a loaded wire thing and other attachment. Then I got a bigger one with more power an electric Einhell. But, didn't know hiw to reload the wire. Not until I saw this video. Reloading the wire was Really Easy. Thanks a million cause it saved me allot.😊😮❤
I've never used a weed eater. I never had to, until now. Someone else did those things, took care of the grass and all but things have changed and the time has come for me to put on my Big Girl Undies and do those things for myself! I was given a weed eater, I don't know what brand it is or anything but, I noticed it didn't have any cord sticking out of it and figured it was time for me to find some and figure out how to load the sucker! I hope the one I have will be as easy to load as what you've shown here. I greatly appreciated you showing the step by step process, even though mine may not work the same as yours. I kinda took the fear out of the unknown so, thanks again!
Thank You!!! I have to go to your video every year to find out how to remove the head from my trimmer and its always easy, but easy to forget! So you are a Godsend every spring when I replace my string and other simple things that most folks already know by my age (72). You are the one I search for and always get simple answers that I can go "AHAAA! Now I remember!"
Nice Job! This makes it twice as fast as the way I was doing it at one string at a time. Thanks for a super video (Short and right to the point without all the "extra talking") Thank You!
Thankyou for this very informative, non patronising video- for a complete novice, it was perfect 👌🏽 Above all, I really appreciated your sunny disposition- so Thankyou, lovely farmer man
Pro tip! If you are just starting out, use .095 line, it will help you get used to the trimmer and it's speed, then use .080 line to get a better cut, it will help you go faster if you have medium to small sized brush.
Thank you for this video, the landscaper, that cut my grass for many years passed away unfortunately, and I have equipment that I need to learn how to work, so I watched this video, and I am happy to have learned how to string a trimmer. Binge watching your videos now!!!
Been weedeating since I was kid but the old 80s/90s style weedeaters we had never seemed to let out string very well with dual strings, so I never bothered doing it. Hadn't had to do any trimming for a decade since moving away from the farm but got a Husqvarna and figured this would be a good time to look for any tricks for wrapping the line easier and doing the dual lines. Man the channels on the newer style heads are really nice! The one note I'd add is to check the way the line is anchored before cutting it. Mine doesn't have holes like that, it just has a notch between the two channels and you loop the line around that and wrap it. I didn't realize that before cutting, so the line is half what I meant to put on. That's alright though, I'll use the two smaller pieces and then I'll know for the next time after that. Still a nice helpful vid.
My husband is under way for a month, and it’s getting warm the grass is getting crazy! Thank you for this tutorial it was very simple and now there is something else I can do! :)
There are two slots on the spool that allow you to cam the string into the spool locking the strings to the spool. This allows you to handle the spool with one hand and guide the strings in one at a time.
This is my first time weed whacking, this was so daunting. But you have made it look super simple. . Will post update on my attempts . Thanks for sharing

" We'll set that down in a proper place " proceeds to throw the cover away...LOL...I have the same model, what a beast !!! I do one string at a time, after watching this I'll do it your way. Great help !!!
Thank you for this video soooo much just started helping my grandfather with his yard work and didn’t want to ask him how bc he memory issues and I was scared he wouldn’t remember and I didn’t want him to feel bad so I taught myself how to start everything up and he was shocked to say the least when he saw me weed eating 😂 he had me picking up pinecones and sticks before bc he didn’t think I could handle the weed eater so I just did it one day he was so shocked and happy
Great video Josh! There are two slots on the string spool where the loose ends of the newly strung string to be pulled into so they won't accidentally come unstrung before you get the spool back into the head. Once you have the spool reinstalled, just give a slight tug on each line to pull the line out of that holding slot. TaDa!!! :-)
Right Mark, those notches in the spool are my 3rd hand. The line being held by the 2 notches makes it so easy to drop the spool in with tension on the spring. Put the cover on then pull your both your stings at the same time to set the spring
Yeah I noticed that and defoz had to do that. He makes it look so easy in the video but I found that you almost do need 3 hands. The crap flies everywhere
Hey thank you sooo much Josh👊. I work a job now where I have to deal with riding mowers, backpack blowers and weed eaters. And I know how to do it all except when it came down to me having to "restring" my weed eater. Now thanks to you I know better how to restring and the proper direction for the string to go 👍👊💪🙌
Most interesting is that you took the protective shroud off the head. Brilliant! I also bought the same Kubota. Love mine! Hope you’re still enjoying yours.
I’ve got the same model I use for hundreds of hours a year, the way he wound works but it’s better to do the top and bottom separately, starting with the top and not letting the line twist like he does because it will bind on itself and you’ll spend a lot of time and hassle having to stop progress to unbind it because the line won’t come out when you tap it. Keep extra full spools nearby or in your pocket to quickly swap out. I keep my machine running 90-95% of the time I bill my clients for and can clear more area than two people typically can.
Dude, First try, thank you. First time, I've bought my own weed eater. Every other time I've dealt with it others have strung it up. This was easy to do. Well done, sir.
Man, this is so helpful, I have a country graveyard to strim this morning and the ground is BAD so this is a huge help as getting the strimmer line right was breaking my heart. Thank you 🇮🇪
I have a STIHL FS 94 R with a User Manual that's 44 pages, English version. It also came with a separately printed page that showed how to replace the string in ONLY 18 steps. Your method is so much easier. Thank you for making this video. I'm now a subscribed viewer and waiting for your next video. Two tips: When you buy a new trimmer, the manual will/should inform you to 'break in' the engine. This break-in period lasts for the first 3 tank fills. I also avoid using gas with ethanol as this additive can cause engine damage.
people are lazy to do all that everyone's been upgrading to new speed heads that load up string automatically I miss these line trimmers the old units are so strong and reliable . the new designs are really stupid if you ask me
After loading the new weedwacker string into cartridge, I spray WD40 in the places I can get the spray to go in to. It will keep the string coming out when needed, and pretty much eliminates the string binding up and "welding" itself to the other string inside the reel.
Very good video thanks 👍🏻 as a gardener al mi life I will just add that usually the still weed eater have an blade on the security cover and that is because if we leave the weed eater line we will end up damaging the motor so if the weed eater have the blade on the cover it cuts the line to the right size
I spray mine with super clean comes in a purple bottle at Wal mart…..cleans up the shaft, cover and spool very nice and then I lube spray with an lube even wd40…..my dad had me lube , oil all metal, lug nuts, bolts, his farm days as a kid taught me alot about preservation……
There are two notches on the reel you can stick the string in to hold it in place as you put it back in the weed wacker head. Just a little tip that helps keep the string from slipping out of your fingers so you don't have to start winding all over again LOL
Do the top first, put it in the notch, then the bottom. Then there is a groove that will hold the spool in place while you insert the line into the two metal holes on the base. Pop on the cap, pull the strings, and whip.
The notches will hold the string in place until you put the spool on the weedeater, so I always keep a spare spool ready to switch out. Rewind on a rainy day. :-)
That was the best demonstration I've found on how to restring the spool. Mine is empty and I need to edge with my Stihl RS70. I'm going to try it right now before I forget how. Thank you for sharing!!!

Great video. I think my mistake has been using a much heavier line. It's tough-wearing but hard to wrestle into place. I use an Austrian scythe for most of my maintenance. This is a beautiful tool, really satisfying to use, and no noise, no pollution.....definitely my preference unless theres lots of stones about.

QUESTION: At 3:44 you say it is not correct to go in the "same" direction. Instead you say to go in the "back" direction. Why do you say this? What would happen if you went in the "same" direction?
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer There are other videos online where it shows the string being wound up in the "forward" direction rather than the "back" direction. Does it simply depend on the weed wacker? Or do all the weed wackers need to be in this "back" direction you mention at 3:44?

Thanks for this! Parents told me to do some yard work today, so I figured I'd go the extra mile and surprise them with a nice weedeated front yard!
Now you tell me!
Never heard that before. I wouldn’t have thought the plastic string would soak up water. Today I was working on restringing and cursing the string. I’ll go soak it immediately.
@@baklash6079 lol
@@baklash6079 that’s funny
A synthetic string would NOT be soaked by water.
Amateur tip: wear nitrile gloves when changing your string if you're working in an area with poison ivy. Source: personal experience.
"Source; personal experience" 😭👍😅 I love it, no-one uses glothes until they learn the hard way, I was the same hahah
Oh my lmao I would have never thought about that guess no one does until it happens according to y’all lol
Now there's a comment worth reading! Good Point, thanks!
I dunk the head in plain water. Inactivates the Urushiol.
And then take the gloves off when urinating.
2.5 million views! Amazing for such a simple but effective video! Thanks!
I knew I missed something...better question...if ya already know how to do this...why are ya watching buddy? Just curious..thanks for the info

I watched three lame videos before finding yours and yours was the one that was actually helpful, cheers mate!
glad it helped...I guess that's why it's the top hit on yt...becuase it works lol
@@StoneyRidgeFarmermy mom told me to find a “how to string your weed eater” video. She knows I am good at finding these videos. Anyways this is a good tutorial. Thanks.
God Bless your dear husband.
I will bet he is proudly looking down on you with a smile!🙏
Your tutorial was all I needed. Thanks sir. I was getting so frustrated on how to properly line my string up. Now its a breeze thanks to you.
I’ve been asking my husband for years to put in new string and he has always done it but felt annoyed that I always had to wait until he had time. So it was time a learned to do it myself, this was the first video I watched and was able to get it in my first try...thank you!
TH-cam is absolutely wonderful for how to’s.
Could ask the guy next door
Now you know that you can do a lot of things without your husband's help. I have learned this lesson also and now I'm very good at weed eating , using our farm tractor for various things by myself I would like to learn to operate an excavator and learn how to weld. LOL good for you! Keep going.
Yeaaaaa Helen,👍
This video posted 5 yrs ago but it definitely helps me in 2024 thank you so much sir. Have a bless one
Well, you are a very jolly American gentleman, Sir! 😄 Brightened my morning and thank you for the very good tip. 👍
Shorts will be a nice addition. Congratulations on your new building- she is a beauty
I don’t have a dad. This helped me a lot. Thanks papa

Thankyou for this very informative, non patronising video- for a complete novice, it was perfect 👌🏽 Above all, I really appreciated your sunny disposition- so Thankyou, lovely farmer man
Thank you!!!!! Single mom here! I had no clue how to do this and it was so easy!
You are so welcome!
Pro tip! If you are just starting out, use
.095 line, it will help you get used to the trimmer and it's speed, then use .080 line to get a better cut, it will help you go faster if you have medium to small sized brush.
Never thought I was UNINTELLIGENT but I've had problems w/ this ...THANKS!
you just needed a little nudge in the right direction brotha
My husband is under way for a month, and it’s getting warm the grass is getting crazy! Thank you for this tutorial it was very simple and now there is something else I can do! :)
There are two slots on the spool that allow you to cam the string into the spool locking the strings to the spool. This allows you to handle the spool with one hand and guide the strings in one at a time.
This is my first time weed whacking, this was so daunting. But you have made it look super simple. . Will post update on my attempts . Thanks for sharing
Wow great educational video! I just got an fs 91 R and I wasnt used to having 2 separate lines in the weed eater so the way I put it in took me way longer than it should. You’re a real time saver thanks 🙏
Thank you for your wonderful help, my teenager son and me are trying to weed wack our 2 acre property, the landscape companies have outrageous prices in SD county and the fire department issue warnings about fire season, on this economy it's been hard to afford the prices to hire someone to do it and the upcoming scorching weather makes it very concerning, your tips and information are greatly appreciated, we are sending you our blessings for making this information available and free of charge, God bless you,

Great video my friend... I agree 👍 no need for fancy equipment is the best.. Old school lasts longer and makes life easier.. Last time I checked life is supposed make life as easiest as possible so we can enjoy our loved ones the most
" We'll set that down in a proper place " proceeds to throw the cover away...LOL...I have the same model, what a beast !!!
Nice job i also made my dad proud too 😅
Great video Josh! There are two slots on the string spool where the loose ends of the newly strung string to be pulled into so they won't accidentally come unstrung before you get the spool back into the head. Once you have the spool reinstalled, just give a slight tug on each line to pull the line out of that holding slot. TaDa!!! :-)
Yes I just discovered what those two notches were for a couple of months ago, makes a big difference putting it back in . 😊👍
Thanks. Hopefully this works for Milwaukee too?
Hey thank you sooo much Josh👊. I work a job now where I have to deal with riding mowers, backpack blowers and weed eaters. And I know how to do it all except when it came down to me having to "restring" my weed eater. Now thanks to you I know better how to restring and the proper direction for the string to go 👍👊💪🙌
Most interesting is that you took the protective shroud off the head. Brilliant!
I also bought the same Kubota. Love mine! Hope you’re still enjoying yours.
You make it look easy. I have spent 2 hours trying to do it before. Easier to buy a new one!
You can do it!
Is Vanna turning letters, too? Just kidding. What a neat way to re-string that head. Simple and effective, Josh. Thank you for sharing the quick tip.
You mean the correct way? 🙂
I know this is coming in late, but this saved me so much aggravation and time. Thank you!! You deserve two million views!! Godspeed my brother!!
Ty so much you solve my annoying problem, you are the best
Dude, First try, thank you. First time, I've bought my own weed eater. Every other time I've dealt with it others have strung it up. This was easy to do. Well done, sir.
Man, this is so helpful, I have a country graveyard to strim this morning and the ground is BAD so this is a huge help as getting the strimmer line right was breaking my heart. Thank you 🇮🇪

This worked awesome for me! Can’t thank you enough! Normally I have my husband do it, but he is in his busy season and I became determined!

This guy is a legend among men. Thanks for this tip man! Life saver
Farm tip. Buy extra spools and preload them. Drop em in your pockets, they have notchs on the spools so theyll stay nice and tight.
people are lazy to do all that everyone's been upgrading to new speed heads that load up string automatically I miss these line trimmers the old units are so strong and reliable . the new designs are really stupid if you ask me
After loading the new weedwacker string into cartridge, I spray WD40 in the places I can get the spray to go in to.
You beat me to it!
That's what I was trying to say and he thought I asked him why he didn't have 12 foot arms or something.
Do the top first, put it in the notch, then the bottom. Then there is a groove that will hold the spool in place while you insert the line into the two metal holes on the base. Pop on the cap, pull the strings, and whip.
Hoss Dude
Whatever man. Cynical douche bag.
The notches will hold the string in place until you put the spool on the weedeater, so I always keep a spare spool ready to switch out. Rewind on a rainy day. :-)
Thanks buddy, love been wrestling ,trying to do one side of.the string at the time..this is so much easier.
That was the best demonstration I've found on how to restring the spool. Mine is empty and I need to edge with my Stihl RS70. I'm going to try it right now before I forget how. Thank you for sharing!!!

Easiest way is to get a SpeedFeed head, Echo, they adapt to Stihl. Black diamond from echo is by far one of the best, razor sharp!

After over 20 years in landscaping, I would recommend the Speed Feed head
Just trust me
Echo speedfeed 400 or 450. Best heads on the market. They are cheap aswell. Also, my favorite strink is echo black diamond
Sniper___ yeah the echo speedfeed is the best
Do you know do they fit on other brands of weed eaters like my efco 2400s
Speedfeed is definitely the way to go
Echo speed feeds are the best. Takes all but 2 minutes to get back going again
Put an Echo speed feed with black diamond line on my Stihl trimmer, Game changer!

QUESTION: At 3:44 you say it is not correct to go in the "same" direction. Instead you say to go in the "back" direction. Why do you say this? What would happen if you went in the "same" direction?
the string won't feed correctly
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer There are other videos online where it shows the string being wound up in the "forward" direction rather than the "back" direction. Does it simply depend on the weed wacker? Or do all the weed wackers need to be in this "back" direction you mention at 3:44?
I have a Echo with a speed feed super easy to load, and i'm using Vortex line by Rotary. The Echo speed feed head would be worth trying, and are not expensive.
