Simple, accurate and to the point. I had a very frustrating time as the string would suddenly UNWIND when i almost had it done! Haha, i wish id seen your vid a while ago( would have saved a lot of swearing!). Ignore the " dislike" votes, you made a good vid and there is ALWAYS a moron somewhere who likes to be difficult. Best regards pal.
I get on TH-cam to figure out things like changing a car battery, or in this case, re-spooling my weed eater. I appreciate the time you put into this video. It allows me to be more self-sufficient. Some of us don't have that person in their life or from childhood that would fill this role, and I appreciate the work.
Thank you for making a video that doesn't have 10 min of fluff in it and getting straight to the point! informative and effective. Also fellow MI native here!
When paper instructions are unclear, I then come to youtube to hopefully find a beautiful video such as this one! THANK YOU so much Mr. Hardware, you are a headache saver.
WOW. Thank you. It's so discouraging to be out in the yard working when the string runs out. All my garden energy became frustration with the restringing till your demo!
YOU ARE THE BOMB!!! 3 hours away from my house and the spook just combusted as I was wacking and I have never done this before and it was possible ALL BECAUSE OF YOU SIR!
Thanks! I can't believe I used to be so intimidated by the prospect of winding a spool that I paid many times more for pre-wound spools. It was actually fun and I feel like I accomplished something today!
Perfect video for a seemingly simple but tricky task. I love that in 3 minutes you saved me 45 minutes of string wrestling and an hour of trimmer headaches (yes, I am always tempted to figure it out for myself only to belatedly realise that I should seek help :) )
Thank you so much for your video! I don't know if you still check your comments, but you helped me so much. As a 55 year old woman, this was my first time trying to re-string a trimmer. Yours was the video that made me finally say, "Aha! I get it now!" Clear, concise, and to the point, and it worked beautifully, right down to your method of measuring the string. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Aaaaaah, Thank You!!! After restringing my trimmer MY way so many times and getting so frustrated with the trimmer not working its best, this is so refreshing. I love doing things right and I appreciate you helping me to learn :-)
Man, I got tired of my weed eater spool unwinding in the middle of my cutting. Ive never thought of doing both at once! Gonna save me the time and headache my word. Thank you!
OH my gosh! Thank you SO much for this video. My new trimmer was different than my previous one and I was clueless on how to restring it. I watched another video that was supposed to help, but in that video, it said to look for the hole on top of it- mine doesn't have it. Mine is exactly like the one you are using, so NOW everything finally makes sense!!
Hi Blair, it's 2024 and I just wanted to say thanks for the great, clear, and straightforward video. You saved me a headache and a whole lot of time and you can't put a price on that. You're the best. Cheers and have yourself a great day! 👍
USAF here stationed in the UK... Bought a Stiga trimmer and had never owned a dual line one before. Went to replace the line and quickly got frustrated. I was born and raised not far from St. Clair Shores over there in Michigan and as soon as I heard your accent and you said where you're from I knew I was good to go. Felt like back home hearing from an uncle. I'm subscribing! Thanks man!
THANK YOU SO MUCH I’ve been sitting here for an hour trying to figure this out! I should’ve looked this up sooner but I’m stubborn lol! Great video very informative :)
I cannot believe that after years of cursing that I should have been winding both strings instead of one at a time. This clip has saved me 20 minutes and I no longer have to worry that our neighbors' children are learning a new vocabulary
These instructions are perfect. I wish it had been made and I discovered it 30 years ago. What used to take me about half-an-hour I finished in about five minutes. Thank you for your excellent video.
You know what. I want to seriously thank you not only for the information but the clear way you presented it. I been around and never owned weed wacker but I can do most things in my life pretty easy. Thanks again and you made it easy to understand and the truth is a person get screw it up and not mean to.. Take care and best of luck and xmas always.....
I think I marveled at how to do this about 10 years ago and somehow I forgot and was just kind of cobbling it. Well thank goodness I found you because I like the way you do it and it sure does feed better
I've struggled with this task since I was a kid. Now as an adult with my weedwacker finally running out I NEEDED to do this. Or I should just sell my house and hand in all my tools... Your vid made it very easy. I know it's a simple thing but doing it without hassle for the first time in my life was something else. Thanks a bunch. Great explanation.
Well explained UNTIL near the end at about 2.40 minutes, when the "keeper was mentioned. It would have been helpful to have a close up of the two lines in their keeper. It seemed to me as if the lines had to cross over??
The keeper notches are there just to hold the lines while you install the spool on the trimmer. Then, you can push the lines back out so they are free. You do not leave the lines in the keeper slots.
I don’t think it really matters if they cross or not. As long as you stick each line into its notches to prevent them from unrolling. Remember, in the end, you have to un-notch them anyways. As long as each string is going into its own separate holes through the weed eater machine, you’re good.
You don't know what a keeper is? Hint, if you don't use it, you'll be rolling it back up again. And again. And again. I think you'll figure that part out lol
Thank you!! The instructions that came with the trimmer aren't worth two cents!!! This video here... priceless!!! This is my second time following the instructions in your video. It's been so long, I couldn't remember what I did last time. Tried the instructions. Then I remembered... I watched a video on TH-cam. It took a few minutes to seach through my history but there it was 👼💃
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? THAT'S IT? I was about to buy a different tool because I couldn't figure this out. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Seriously, from a woman who didn't have a father growing up to teach me these things. Thank you! 🙏
You sir are a life saver. I watched 5 other videos before this one each one leaving me more and more frustrated. You showed me in 40 seconds what others had 9 minute vidoes for thank you.
This is a very good video until the last part.....why does it jump so fast? I can't understand how to insert it into the weed eater. Unfortunately it is of no help to me :(
He spent all his time winding the string. I have one and after I put the line in per directions that came with the it replacement line, It chewed it up. The instructions were more in depth than the video.
There is a notch cut through both sides of the spool from the bottom half. It runs directly across and out the top, just like the top spool hangs out, so its same but doubled for the bottom. Once secured put head and spring back in, run the two spool strands out the heads outlets, press and hold down snug, secure the trimmer headbolt back on, remember counter clockwise, its a reverse thread. So righty loosey, lefty tighty in this case
BoostedBadBoy ZX12R it's still confusing in words, better to have shown that part in closeup video. However, I did figure out how to do that, by good ole trial and error!
Spicetruck (Nari) if you can't follow that, I'm sorry, can't help ya, it was literally explained word for word how it would be done. Top stran comes out in its width notch bottom stran goes through middle to top side to match the other out the top equal on opposite side. Put it through head outlets bolt it down.
+Frank Thomas 2:05, could be the assumption of, "that the a man engineered it". As a dad of girls who are little sparks of me, and surprise me with what ideas they come up with it might be the thumbs down answer you're looking for. Plenty of great women inventors and engineers alike. Very informative otherwise, thank you, Blair!
Jeffrey Moore because they are showing the person instead of the actual replacement of the string. nobody wants to see his face. we actually want to see what he is doing
This really helped make it easy for me. The owners manual to my string trimmer provided a much more cumbersome method and I just couldn't get it to feed reliably. After trying it with your method it works flawlessly. Thank you.
This is the best video I have seen on this subject. On a separate note, I wish that my Black and Decker weed eaters could use lots of attachments like the professional weed eaters. There is even an attachment to make a weed eater into a snow remover. I hope that the manufacturers look at this comment and start making versions of their attachments that can be used on other major manufacturer hardward.
Cheers Blair, The manual to my strimmer was lacking to say the least when it came to refilling the spool. Thankfully there are helpful people such as yourself on the planet. Thank you for uploading.
Great video. Made the job very easy. I have two modifications that worked for me. 1. Cut one length of string and feed one end through a hole to the center of the spool and then feed it back out through the other hole. 2. Make one side about 3 inches longer than the other side. Now, when you wind the cord it won't pull out of the holes (so you can make the first revolution fairly taut) and when you are done, you have approx the same length of excess string on both sides.
I have a Harbor Freight corded string trimmer with a similar kind of stringing system. My experience is that there is MORE to it than just what your describe. For example, there is a strong tendency when the spool is put back in the machine for the string inside to rewind, pulling the string back into the housing. Two tips that reduce the likelihood of that happening: 1: leave a foot or so of line outside both holes after inserting the holder into the trimmer. 2. Once the holder and trimmer have been reassembled, you can wind some of that excess back by winding the holder while it's inside the trimmer, but leave some surplus outside to avoid seeing that string disappear back into the housing! 3. The Harbor Freight trimmer has two detents used to relase the holder from the trimmer. These tend to be a pain to make work. What works for me is to work on pushing just one UP until the holder is released from the trimmer housing. Trying to open both at the same time is a waste of time. 4. This trimmer has an auto advance system. Each time the trimmer stops spinning you should hear a soft "click" which is thye trimmer line advancing a notch. You can do this repeatedly but just bumping the switch to start it rotating a bit, then let it slow down and listen for the click. If you don't hear the click, something is wrong and you'll probably have to open it up and fix what's wrong. Often the string is wrapped too tightly to be unwrapped by the feed mechanism. Have fun! I found it take a lot of practice to make this work reasonably well!
Simple and saved me a ton of time. My Dad never had the patience to teach me these things, as he liked his lawn a certain way. Thanks for filling that role!
Thanks Mr. Gilbert! I had been winding my spool wrong for a while. I did it your way and my Toro actually works better and the winding takes a fraction of the time than my way! Unbelievable!
thanks very much for this video! The line ran out on electric Homelite trimmer and I was like---? Then came you and your easy instruction and the trimming is now done! thanks again, Mr. Hardware!
I hate doing yard work, but I've had this Ryobi for decades. Finally ran out of string. Went to Home Depot, he had no clue. Thanks for that waste of time. Looked at this video on line and thought 'it CAN'T be that easy." even for a garden gnome like myself. Guess what, it is. Thank you so much for showing me how to do this. I can't wait to tell the Home Depot 'expert'.
Thank you so much for your help. I’m a single female that prefers to do my yard work. I can’t take advantage of myself. Thanks for saving me time and money. God bless♥️.
Thank you for a very good description! I will surprise my husband, don't think he thought I would make it. The back side is I have to do it from now on 🤔🙂. Greetings from an gal in Sweden 🤗
Very informative. Worked like a charm except that our spool did not have the starting holes. It did have grooves that went to the bottom on the center plastic wire separator. We stacked the lines with the help of a knife to make sure they were as low as possible and were able to wind as instructed. Thanks so much for this video. Now we can continue to use our Craftsman even though the replacement spools are no longer readily available.
What a simple genius explanation, thank you! This always intimidated me but it's so stinking easy! I'm a short woman so I'll do 2 arm lengths and cut off too much if necessary. So cool!
Thanks Blair - yr video saved the day for me (and about 1.5million before me too, by the looks!!). Nice and easy to follow - and it worked! My spool doesn't have the 2 holes to start the string - but 2 slots in the side - a little trickier but yr principal was the same - the biggest tip for me was locking the string into the notches at the top at the end of the winding - this holds it nicely as you insert the string into the actual eyelets of the machine as you re-install - then when its all refitted, just a gentle tug on the string both sides releases it from those notches. The number of times I've stuffed about trying to get that right!! Wasn't only the string unwinding at times!!! Cheers mate!
Simple, accurate and to the point. I had a very frustrating time as the string would suddenly UNWIND when i almost had it done! why does he clip the part where he feeds it through the keeper?

I have a Harbor Freight corded string trimmer with a similar kind of stringing system.
My experience is that there is MORE to it than just what your describe.
For example, there is a strong tendency when the spool is put back in the machine for the string inside to rewind, pulling the string back into the housing.
Two tips that reduce the likelihood of that happening:

Greetings from an gal in Sweden 🤗
It is cool to see I'm reaching across the pond. I feel so worldly.... lol
Lane of the best TH-cam videos ever. Succinct and presented excellently.
Thank you very much, I wish more presenters posted in your style.
I've only spooled singles before. My step dad got a double so this video helped give me some pointers when spooling doubles. Thanks!
This was great. Luckily I could rewind and pause the video several times to see exactly what he was doing. I do love my string trimmer.
Brilliant! Struggled with this job for years - it’s actually so simple when you know how. Many thanks from Scotland 👍
Being of the Gordon clan, you are welcome
Mr. Hardware Ha ha! Good man 😉
I never bother to take the time to know how to do it right. Now I did with your video. It was very easy and clear. Thanks Blair !
What a simple genius explanation, thank you! This always intimidated me but it's so stinking easy! I'm a short woman so I'll do 2 arm lengths and cut off too much if necessary. So cool!
This video is awesome. Start by saying to follow the arrows. Nobody else gave this tip. Thanks
I've referred to this video at least 3 times every summer for the last 5 years. Top Marks 👍
Only video that PROPERLY showed how to re spool the line onto a dual trimmer head
This video was a huge help to me. Let me restring my wacker without having to ask my dad or boyfriend. Thank you so much!
Empowerment to the women. Who needs a man????
thanks Blair
Thank you so very much! 2.7 million views really says a lot about the ease of instructions!
Thank you very much, Blair
Hello Gilbert, thank you for the no nonsense to the point very instructive, great sound level and lighting. Thank you from Ocala Florida.
