I appreciate you doing the video at 4K despite the game only outputting at 1080P because it goes a long way towards getting around the compression issues of TH-cam and it really lets the visuals and art direction of the game shine.
Pretty sure that's the entire reason they upload at 4K. Most of their content is sub-4K, but it's important to upload at 4K 60 because YT bumps the bitrate up the higher the resolution and fps. They also have a website with all their stuff without YT compression, just huge raw files, if you really wanna pixel peep.

Real! This game, along with Kid Icarus Uprising and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, are prime examples I go to in order to show that the 3DS hardware isn't weak like people think. It's just that many devs didn't bother taking advantage of it.
It supported surround sound too, via Dolby Pro Logic II. Most modern surround sound systems should still have a mode that supports this, though it may be called by a different name (since most matrix surround decoders are more or less backwards compatible with Pro Logic). The easiest way to check that it's working is if the thunder is coming from your rear speakers.
The 3ds was a beast and nobody can tell me otherwise. I spent thousands of hours on my 3ds. Between monster hunters, Pokémon’s, Smash Brothers, Kingdom Hearts, I had hundreds of hours in each. And then just all the bangers in between, Kid Icarus Uprising, DragonBall Fusions, Mario Kart, the Zelda remakes, all the great Kirby games, Shovel Knight. I mean the list literally goes on and on. Battery life for days, the Circle Pad Pro before the XL became a thing. I can’t even begin to guess how much time I actually spent with mine in my hands
I was thrilled when it came to 3DS but I agree I would love to see a Switch 2 remake, 4k HDR with new textures but keeping the creepiness of the original.
I’m actually really happy you’re taking an objective look at the remastering work. A big criticism of the game I’ve been seeing is that people are thinking it was only made higher resolution and had some texture work
My wife, who does not play or care for video games at all, has beat luigi's mansion 3 about 4 times now 😅. Each time finding extra treasure somewhere or figuring out some game mechanic she didn't know before (like flashlighting the spiders, mice, bat's, and etc, instead of trying to suck them up.) Yeah, she definitely would love a 4th one, I'm sure she'll like 2.
For the price of $60 bucks? Yeah no. This game has no business being that expensive. It's not even 'Metroid Prime Remastered' (more of a complete remake in my opinion) level of quality graphical and performance conversion, and that game was only $40-50 bucks. However though, I am STILL glad that this game was even ported to the Switch with "some" noticeable improvements mostly to the number of polygons the characters got instead of a straight from the 3DS conversion job. Because I really so badly wanted to finish this game on my 3DS but never got around to finishing it. My Luigi's still stuck at the beginning of that old abandoned clocktower level on my red beat up N3DS XL to this day.
Quality of the Remake is nice. Really should have been bundled with the first to remotely justify that $60 price tag. Considering they already ported the first with updated assets to the Dark Moon engine for the 3ds port I don't think it would be too big of a hurdle. This seems like the kind of switch game that will go down to $30 for physical copies within a couple months. Will prolly pick it up then but no higher

I think it would've been worth the effort for Nintendo to remake this to the level of fidelity that Luigi's mansion 3 had. A similar treatment for the first part would have been the ultimate release
I'm sure if Retro Studios would do the Remaster, it would have been even better; and in 60. Retro Studios are those who made Metroid Prime Remastered. But they are busy with Metroid Prime 4 at the moment. I don't understand how anyone can get excited about Luigis Mansion 2 HD, in the sense of being amazing.
The only issue is that (even though I agree) is that Mansion 2 uses a different engine across the board versus 3, and implementing that kind of detail into a different engine would basically be a retooling of an older engine. I feel like we'll be getting Masnion 1 remake with the 3rd games engine in mind, I'm sure 2 was done to just pump some sales, and tbh it doesn't look bad! Yeah if they also remade the first game and included both in one box for 60$ then I would grab it day 1. Metroid Prime Remastered showed us how it's done.
The limited spaces of Luigi's Mansion games have always helped push in graphics. Idk what you're talking about cause this game is still graphically impressive, for the Switch. Looks really good from this video. Often times just highering the resolution does alot for games like the PS2 era, but they have gone the extra mile with this game.
One issue I noticed is E. Gadd's call theme plays for a second before the results theme plays, and in cutscenes if the level has that, like after the spider boss when Luigi does a little dance and gets scared by a tiny spider from behind.
Thank you for a great comparison. I thought they just ported it to Switch but I can see some attention was put into it and new art was made, I loved the way the light from the flashlight was bouncing off those pavers in the opening scene! Didn't they add some multiplayer mode too?
I appreciate your review as a lot of commentators online are making it out to be an upgrade to visuals and that is it. Your analysis shows more than that was done. I am seeing in the comments section people complaining about costs.
Im ok with 30fps to be honest, uncapped fps in my opinion belongs on PC where you can upgrade your machine eventually. If you cannot make your game running on your console (whichever console) at a solid 144, 120, 60 fps, just leave it at a solid 30, specially on more powerful consoles than the switch
Seeing what next level was able to accomplish with Luigi's Mansion 3 I'm very excited to see what they can do with another one in switch 2 with actual ray tracing
Any remaster of a game on portable device is worth. Let's admit it we love portable gaming but most everyone would take a big screen and looking forward than small screen and neck pain.
I must point out that, when you mentioned that the geometry was largely untouched in the exterior of the first mansion, it wasn't exactly correct. You can see on the fences and on the stones on the ground that the geometry was changed a little bit. The overall shape is the same, but both the fences and the stones have beveled edges now. Also, the vines climbing on poles and other stuff are much higher quality now
Tantalus's remasters of Nintendo games always seem to keep the feel of the originals, and it's hard to appreciate how much changed until you put them head-to-head. Great comparison
The stereoscopic 3D of the 3DS version is outstanding, I wouldn't give that up just for HD graphics. The game was made for the tiny screen so it works.
Indeed, since it's a John video, one would expect some retro references, and the Wipeout bit was precisely that :) Considering everything, those Wipeout Saturn ports were quite good.
I love all three games, but i still think the first has the best artstyle and atmosphere, when it comes to giving a feeling of "creepiness". The transparency look of the ghost and the excellent music, made it feel more like a horror game.
I personally think it looks excellent for what it is. They put the right amount of juice into all the most important graphical aspects. Imagine Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3D redone in the same way. If they're done on the Switch 2 they could look even better and potentially have more modern upgrades like HDR or even some light raytracing
I wasn't going to pick this up because I have the 3DS version, but this absolutely sold me on it. It looks beautiful! Side note: I kept thinking I heard birds near me while rewatching 3:36, then I realized it was the video
you said that Next level games had been quiet since the release of Luigi's mansion 3 but is not the case, they where the developers behind The Mario Strikers game from 2022, but i also hope they're currently working on a fourth game
It would be interesting to compare the models and stuff in this remaster with Capcom's Luigi's Mansion Arcade (which is an on-rails arcade adaptation of Dark Moon) since they probably go on different ways on HD-fying these stuff compared to the original 3DS game.
Admittedly the 3D doesn't work on my eyes half as well now that I am an older adult rather than a kid, even with getting a New 3DS xl. But I will really miss it on this game even if I am in the minority. I love this game and the 3D looked great on it I wonder if I can try emulating this game on a digital screen in VR for a higher resolution 3D screen, but I don't know if that emulator is Meta only or if it also works on PC headsets or if it supports upscaling. Would be interesting to mess around with although you obviously wouldn't get the higher resolution textures

Meanwhile, someone else released three Spyro games or three Crash Bandicoot games for 40 euros.
While also being remakes and running at 60 fps on consoles I guess.
@@xyoxus They weren't 60 lol
and still had the same flaws and archaic gameplay of the ps1 era, good visuals does not equal a good remake.
@@pothitoskourtisLuigis Mansion 2 is a very mediocre game itself
Luigi Mansion is a strong and popular IP and doesn't need to be released at cheap pricing to attract consumers.
Luigi's Mansion 1 destroys the later two games in atmosphere
1 is better in that regard but 2 does have some good atmosphere when you pay close attention, it can get creepy in places you wouldn't expect
True, but it's not a better game
@amadeus.7436 Eh you could definitely argue that it is
@@Mwchael I wouldn't. It's a glorified tech demo. Great idea and it's fairly fun to play but it's very short and shallow.
It's an even harder sale at $60.
Well I'm definitely buying this as soon as I can!
They should have done 1 and 2 bundle.
I am seeing in the comments section people complaining about costs.
it's a fair complaint. game is not worth $60, it was $40 at launch for 3DS.
Do miss Luigi's nervous humming of the theme tune!
Also, the vines climbing on poles and other stuff are much higher quality now
Can we get this for the Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask remakes? Ideally on a single cartridge?
Tantalus's remasters of Nintendo games always seem to keep the feel of the originals, and it's hard to appreciate how much changed until you put them head-to-head. Great comparison
We need that 1st game, even if it just gets ported to some gamecube online, we need it. (Though I'd love a Remaster/remake)
10:30 they forgot what bass is
The stereoscopic 3D of the 3DS version is outstanding, I wouldn't give that up just for HD graphics. The game was made for the tiny screen so it works.
Indeed, since it's a John video, one would expect some retro references, and the Wipeout bit was precisely that :) Considering everything, those Wipeout Saturn ports were quite good.
Yes Wipeout wasn't a game well suited to the Saturn's architecture
samus return on switch would be nice
The pixely look that the game has is honestly so iconic for it that I’d prefer that over Switch
Still crazy how good how good some 3DS games looked.
I love all three games, but i still think the first has the best artstyle and atmosphere, when it comes to giving a feeling of "creepiness". The transparency look of the ghost and the excellent music, made it feel more like a horror game.
Only glaring issue with this game... price. I feel like 30-40 dollar price tag would've been more appropriate for this title.
you can get a used copy for cheaper, especially when used physical Switch game prices become cheap.
The professor looks like Rich 10 years from now.
One of those remasters I’m glad exists, and I have absolutely no intention on buying.
I am actually surprised. When it was first announced I was not surprised and the frame rate looked bad. They ended up doing a very good job after all!
I personally love the idea that this game has more then one mansion
The price is crazy, compare that to the recent Monster Hunter Stories port from 3DS to console and PC, priced at $30.
I scored the game for $45 and have been enjoying it a lot.
I really wish more games on Switch (and honestly in general) put their focus on delivering a sharp clean image.
i know it’s a long shot but i would love if the Switch 2 had 3D display. i genuinely enjoyed it on the 3DS
Ah, Tantalus are the devs, nice! I wonder if that means Mario and Luigi Brothership is by next level with old dev support.
you said that Next level games had been quiet since the release of Luigi's mansion 3 but is not the case, they where the developers behind The Mario Strikers game from 2022,
but i also hope they're currently working on a fourth game
It would be interesting to compare the models and stuff in this remaster with Capcom's Luigi's Mansion Arcade (which is an on-rails arcade adaptation of Dark Moon) since they probably go on different ways on HD-fying these stuff compared to the original 3DS game.
2:03 Tantalus also developed Twilight Princess HD.
Awesome Review!
Hoping for a Switch 2 release title. The "Luigi's Mansion" titles have always been my favorite of mine.
Admittedly the 3D doesn't work on my eyes half as well now that I am an older adult rather than a kid, even with getting a New 3DS xl. But I will really miss it on this game even if I am in the minority. I love this game and the 3D looked great on it
I wonder if I can try emulating this game on a digital screen in VR for a higher resolution 3D screen, but I don't know if that emulator is Meta only or if it also works on PC headsets or if it supports upscaling. Would be interesting to mess around with although you obviously wouldn't get the higher resolution textures
Yo! I just realized with them doing this, I would love to see Ocarina of Time 3DS and Majoras Mask 3DS ports would be amazing
This was my, along with many others, childhood game. And I don't care what other people say (Though I can see why) I pre-ordered it.
This is going to look dope on my OLED!
Finished 60% of the game. I enjoy it❤
Seeing it compared to the 3ds version really makes me realize how much better it looks, but for a full $60 it should look better
