- I was looking for a quick, small turning due to a sore arm. First piece I saw was this little branch section of Cherry Plum. It proved to be the perfect piece for a simple project that would make an easy sell at a craft show, bazaar or as a neat, spur of the moment gift. Also, a great beginner project! Finished with Howard's Feed & Wax.

I appreciate how you note the gouge size and RPM you are using during this process. So many instructional videos forget these small but important details.

Agree. Even just a quick “3/8 bowl gouge here”… and RPMs helps alot. Confirms.
While I appreciate his video don't get sold to idea of running whatever rpm someone else is using. You wanna turn anything at the fastest speed it can safely be done. Which changes with every piece

It is alway appreciated when details of size, tools used and lathe speeds given. An experienced woodturner would know these things but the begginer needs all the advice they can get. Thank you.

Just the cutest little bowl. I'd invite you to dinner especially if I knew you were giving 1 of your beautiful creations as a thankyou gift. I'd probably even make a homemade pie. Hope your arm doesn't give you too many fits. I'm getting a total hip replacement June 28th and I've been in extreme pain for almost a year.On pain meds some but your videos help take my mind off of me. Thankyou My Dad always said that getting old isn't for sissies. Lol

I was thinking they might have been the little paper cups with paper lids of ice cream we would sometimes have with school lunches. Or maybe they were the tiny drinking cups that you would pull one from a plastic tube next to a drinking fountain or water bottle. Or maybe neither of those. I do know that's a really cute bowl anyone would be very happy to receive as a gift! I hope your arm and hand feel better soon. Don't overwork them! ☺️❤️👍

Dixie cup takes me back to childhood. That's the shape of them boats you used to get banana splits at the tasty freeze in. That's beautiful !

Ice cream? Wow, that was a ways ago. I remember Dixie cups as little paper cups for drinking out of for sanitary reasons. And what a pretty little bowl! If someone handed me one of these, I'd be over the moon!

Nice job, very cute and love the live edge on the sides. - Dixie Cups were single serving ice cream with a cardboard pull tab lid - we usually ate it with a flat wooden spoon. Nice job on the bowl, thanks for sharing

Dixie cups were small paper cups
They stacked into each other and in a dispenser. Remember having them at grandma's and in the camper.

Dixie cup in Canada is a small plastic dish of ice cream covered with a thin piece of cardboard usually has a little flat piece of wood shaped like a spoon to eat it with. This little bowel looks like you could put a small banana split in it. Love the shape and the bark and the beautiful cracks. Beautiful piece Phil

I remember the Dixie Chicks. Never hear of a group called the Dixie Cups. There was a brand of paper ware called Dixie and just an empty paper cup was referred to as a Dixie cup. I think you might be right that you could also buy ice cream in a cup that we called a Dixie cup too.

The Dixie Chicks are a relatively recent country group, as you know, Robert. The Dixie Cups were a girl group from the 60's. I think one of the best things I’ve learned from you is the use of the sand-o-flex. I purchased mine this past Christmas. Very nice. I hope your arm improves soon, Phil.

I had not heard of this sanding tool until tonight and just looked around online where I can buy one locally.. I can't tell if you're using the slashed or solid strips in your Sand O Flex, would you share?

lol Phil Dixie cups were disposable paper cups . alot of people use to keep them in there bathrooms to rinse there mouth out after brushing there teeth . or for small sample cups for treats at the ice cream shop or a craft sale . they were great for little ones to give drinks in cause they were small and easy for them to hold . cute little bowl be great for a end stand to through change in or maybe a candle .

As a child we used to get small cups of ice cream with a lid. We called them Dixie Cups!
Yes, that's what I was referring to, John, just not sure where they came from. Grocery store?
We got them from the ice cream stand! They were half chocolate and half vanilla, and came with a little wooden spoon to eat it. And sometimes there would be a picture on the under side of the lid! They held about 4 ounces, just right for a little kid!
Now they make spin-offs, not as much fun, and generally wretched ice cream. We get them for desert sometimes in this senior housing I live in! 🤪
@@beatricethomas3056 the new Dixie cup ice cream isn't ice cream. I don't know what the slimy sludge is, but definitely not ice cream. It should be against the Geneva Convention to serve it to road kill let alone people.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop What a nice flashback. I hadn't thought about those in years, but I do now remember them fondly. I guess that's what we would call the good old days, ;-).
I made something similar to that but a little larger. I went too deep and had a beautiful hole at the bottom. (too small for a sink) I fit a coffee filter in it, filled it with soil and a small plant. It was a hit at the craft sale. I am thinking of making more of these mistakes. 🙂

Lovely piece Phil. Plenty more inspiration to raid the fire log pile. Shows that we don’t need to be so worried about sawing off those cracked ends when they can add so much character. That is the Dixie Cup I remember, too, David. We used to get small ice cream cups, but they had a different name. I was.born in 1957. Maybe it was a regional thing?

My neighbors cut down a beautiful cherry wood tree. It was in bad shape but the wood is gorgeous. They let me grab pieces for my turtle habitat. I'd love to swipe the whole tree. 😆 Lots of cracks but beautiful grain. That is a perfect little bowl.

Dixi cups were vanilla ice cream with a little wooden flat spoon attached, usually sold in grocery stores.
The female group you were grasping at was the Dixie Chicks.
You are partly correct, Doreen. The ice cream part is right on! The Dixie Chicks were from the 90's. I think I might be much older than you if you don't remember the Dixie Cups Girl Group from the 60's, but you will when you listen to this song:

Phil, I just adore this little bowl. I do hope your arm feels better soon. Here in the US a dixie cup was in a holder in the bathroom to hold small cups for water. We also had one in the kitchen for small drinks of water, then you could just throw them out. No cup to wash. God Bless you!

Fruit wood will usually have some cracks, I found also.

That turned out very nice. I like the fact that is something small enough that I could do on my little 10" lathe. Anything over 7" is hard because it will not clear the banjo. I do a lot of spindle turning because of it.
