Fantastic interview. The Funhouse is one of those movies that I keep coming back to because it's just a lot of fun to watch. It's one of those horror movies with great characters that I don't really want to see die. Sure, they're kind of jerks and make some bad choices, but they feel like actual teenagers who are in over their heads, rather than stock characters who are only there to die. That really helps sell Larry's point about this being a cautionary tale. No one is going to take your message to heart if they're not thinking "Gee, that could be me and my friends." I loved hearing about how much thought was put into the script and the unfortunate reality of producers not recognizing it.
I remember the first time I saw it was on TV as a kid and found it absolutely terrifying. One scene that's always stuck with me is when the main girl is hiding in the vents and she can see her parents on the outside. She's screaming for help but the exhaust fan drowns her out and she just has to watch them drive away. That's just such an effective and relatable fear that it gets to me every time.

Very cool interview. I don't think I remember him being a part of the Blu-ray special features so this was really great.

Thanks for the comment. You’re correct. I was excluded from the Blu-ray commentary. Writers are often under appreciated in Hollywood which is pretty ironic, since all movies begin with the written word.

@@LarsBlock That's such a shame because writers have so much insight into the movie and provide so many tidbits. My favorite special features are often writer interviews and my favorite commentary is by a writer (David Morrell - "First Blood"). I listened to your interview in full here and could've listened for much more. You made me enjoy and appreciate "The Funhouse" even more.

Fantastic interview; great stories re: Tobe Hooper. Very much looking forward to a future interview, discussing Stan Lee. Since this interview was so horror-centric, I agree that it would be a better idea to make those two different podcasts, especially since it makes for a good reason to have more detailed interviews in regards to the respective subjects.

Great job letting him just go and stepping in to keep things on track. Love the follow up about the intent for a sequel. Honestly was going to skip this one, but it was a great watch.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s and being one of those kids who loved being scared, films like The Omen, Burnt Offerings and The Exorcist were terrifying.
The Funhouse fit into another category, popcorn horror. With its mysterious, nostalgic, and with a few jump scares made this one that I watched often, like Fright Night.
The Funhouse checks all the boxes. It balanced all the tropes and the characters of Amy and Joey were cast perfectly.
I'm curious if there are any updates on a reboot.
You didn’t talk about it but the novelization by Dean Koontz was excellent. If I were to do a reimagining of the story, I would incorporate more of Gunther's backstory and Amy's mother.
    Read the book!
