  • Guitar tutor & professional musician reacts to band-maid manners. This is my first time hearing Manners from the black hole double header video live performance. Aside from a more standard reacts format, we also analyse learn about the various components that make song. Including a guitar lesson on the chorus chord progression, and that cool chromatic riff, with some bass for good measure! In-depth reaction of the this incredible all girl rock band
    Still working my way through the list of suggestions, but please do leave recommendations. I've started a tally, so anytime I see a song it gets another vote!
    Hopefully this analysis is accessible, if I ever go off on a music theory laden tangent, just hit me up in the comments and I'll try to explain what I'm rambling on about!
    Make sure to subscribe and do that notification thing so you don't miss next weeks video, finishing off this band maid manners and black hole reaction duo!

    That's part of the Backing Tracks. Kanami will put in whatever they can't reproduce LIVE in them, including synths, effects and vocals. They have played without in when the computer gets lost with the luggage, but their usually more worried about the sneakers they have bought along the way.

    I think Miku’s bend “solo” was intended as a joke about the fact that she didn’t know how to play at the beginning of the band’s history, which would make sense as the song is a sort of autobiography of the band.
    If you want to see her doing some lead work, look at “Wonderland” official live. At a certain point you can see that Kanami is just playing a nice riff on the lower strings while Miku plays a lead melody on the higher strings.
    Wonderland in general has some really excellent lead work from Kanami throughout, as well as some very jazzy bass and drum work.

    'Black Hole' was a Kanami challenge (so the apocryphal legend goes) to Akane. She asked Akane what her BPM limit was and, after Akane said 200, Kanami wrote this 220 BPM beauty. Akane probably replied "Hold my beer..." judging by her performance live!

  • @thomasrotweiler
    @thomasrotweiler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    IIRC Kanami wrote Manners after studying several Grammy award winners writing styles. So it's not surprising it sounds very familiar, very much a "Roots" track. The lyrics are like a mission statement of where the band is aiming to go.MISA gives a funky groove in places. (Btw you seen to have muted the end of the fade out, which has a Sister Sledge feel.)

      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

  • @YourMusicStore
    @YourMusicStore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This song is full of easter eggs, I think the horns are one because both the drummer and bass player used to play horns in school. And they are way louder here, on the album version is merely a suggestion.
    Kobato also plays leads on other songs. One you can see on YT is Wonderland but there's also RINNE and Glory but those you gotta be paying extra attention. The "1, 2, 3, 4" is probably her as well on the studio (Saiki said she is embarrassed to do ad-libs) but not live. The bass on this song sounds like an idling truck, it's so awesome!
    Also, during the guitar solo there's a bass solo going on too. 😂 This band is something else!
    Great breakdown, Jack! You never disappoint!

    Great job on another excellent tutorial and breakdown. Cool catch on your part of how Kanami's guitar part patterns the prior horns section. Ya' know, I've heard that video 100 times by now, and never picked up on that before. You heard it once, and immediately noticed it.
    I've heard other reactors comment about the distorted vocals, but you're the first to demonstrate it for us. That was hilarious. I genuinely laughed out loud hearing you go low and high.
    Lastly, that segment starting at 4:05, you felt a vibe of Skid Row or Guns n Roses. Okay, for me, I hear Red Hot Chili Peppers. At 40 seconds into "By The Way" th-cam.com/video/JnfyjwChuNU/w-d-xo.html , they start a 1-word per line rap. Slow that down a bit and Band-Maid is doing the same thing in that part of "Manners".

    I absolutely LOVE this tune, and a huge fan of the music video but....the more I listen to this LIVE version the more I'm liking it. Miku is my little star here. Speaking of MISA and 16th notes, her performance in "Blooming" syncing with Akane's kick is pretty awesome also. This is the first time I heard the "horns" as you called them, great touch. A lot of things in this live version I have a hard time picking up on the MV version, like Miku's "echo" vocal part, never heard it on the MV version but sticks out here. Good stuff as always JBF Thanks!

    Appreciate the Skid Row reference, my favourite band in the early nineties and I hear so many musical similarities in their songs, I hear 'My Enemy' from the greatly underrated 'Subhuman Race' in 'Manners', great songs and great bands. Just realised I used a few too many greats there, balls I ain't changing it.

She did like them and became a spokespigeon for them. To celebrate the 5 year anniversary of the collab, they made a signature named "Flappy Pigeon", which by many is considered a real work of art. Some really nice details! And highly exclusive since it was meant to only be made 50.

    Your remark that Band-Maid is heavily influenced by Skid Row and Guns’n Roses makes sense. These are the favorite bands (with Van Halen and Metallica) of the man that is responsible for Thrill, the song that more or less determined their musical direction. EVH was his all time favorite, maybe something to keep in mind when analyzing their classic rock songs.

    I never noticed it before, but that little riff at the end of the chorus part reminds me of Shine by Collective Soul. There's just two extra notes instead of saying "yeah" and the last note (or 3rd from last in the case of Manners) doesn't go up by a half step.

      Often she offers mincho alternative readings and mincho always sets her the completely impossible one.
      So in bandmaid style she rehearses until the whole band can play it note perfect then kanami makes them do it faster. Apparently she's a real martinet. I don't think she does the full George Solti "screaming skull" but she doesn't take prisoners in the studio or rehearsal room.

    I still don’t understand how you can resist listening to the song straight through at least one time before dissecting it by bar. (Maybe you do that but just don’t tell us.) I think the musical analysis is much more meaningful after you grasp the emotional impact of the song. Are you not interested is that aspect of music?

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have all these thoughts anyway, so it's nice to be able to express them. I tend to listen to the song afterwards. If I listen to it first, there would be no point having it playing in the behind me cause any 'reaction' would just be contrived, you know?
      I suppose the thing is for me that the emotion in any song comes from all of these components and I'm more interested in why or how something makes me feel a certain way or conveys an emotion. Rather than just the emotion itself, if that makes sense?
