    Oh gosh, I remember when you went to see Ella, it broke my heart seeing her under that table, trying to be invisible, then you came into her life. What a fantastic change you made. She is beautiful and what's more, you understand her and she definitely understands you. Brilliant video, love seeing the pack running free. Take care. Xxxx

    I had a dog that was half pit bull and and half wild dog from Peru-her mother had been rescued from a log she was clinging to in a flooded river by a member of the Ispca. She was very high energy and could easily jump over 6ft fence. She was a handful but the love she gave me was so worth it.
    Every dog should be given a chance to live a long happy life.

    Hi Lee thank you for Ella's story. I had a collie dog (rescue) who herded my cats and barked a lot. With time and patience loads of long walks he calmed down. He was a beautiful boy and loved him very much. He protected me all the time and miss him very much. I have another rescue and she never leaves my side but shes friendly with everyone she meets

    Lee, I saw your first video of Ella at the shelter. Today she’s literally a different dog. It’s wonderful to see how much she loves you, and it’s good for you to receive and give back that love. I’m a little concerned that you think that her anxiety is partly underlying her energy. I hope that anxiety will lessen as time goes on. I’m very glad to have seen this video and to have seen how much you and her new environment mean to her.

    I was one of the few lucky ones that got a heeler/lab mix who was an absolute potato that didn't even want to go around the block. She used to "smile" and wag her little bobtail whenever she was really excited. She was such a lazy toad that never really cared for most anyone but me, but one day put herself between my three year old nephew and some attacking pomeranians (those things were evil). I'd never seen her do anything like that before and thankfully never had to test it again. Such a good girl, may she rest in peace.

      @@beverlysachar5608 Oh some are! One of the sweetest dogs I ever met was a pom, these two just weren't. Their owners just let them run wild in the neighborhood, chasing cars, kids, bikes, etc. and they would bite if your back was turned. It was pretty sad but Animal Control finally confiscated them after so many incidents.

  • @andydufresne5297
    @andydufresne5297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Loved learning about Ella.That's one happy girl! All too often, an owner chooses an animal because that owner likes the way the breed looks, even though the typical breed temperament is not compatible with the owner's lifestyle. Then, when the dog is brought home, frustration ensues, because the dog is bouncing off the walls, or the dog is nipping at everyone's heels (trying to "herd"), and the owner is bewildered as to why.
    On a sort of related topic, this same thing can happen when senior--or almost senior--citizens get a high-energy breed and/or a large breed simply because that's the breed they owned years ago, when they were younger and more active. While it may work out fine for some older dog owners, I've noticed that many older folks no longer have the physical ability (or patience) to manage a higher energy dog, or to lift or otherwise maneuver a larger dog. Again, it's frustrating for everyone. And the dog may end up being rehomed, if there is no other family member available to take the dog.

    • @jillcampbell8019
      @jillcampbell8019 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have suggested breeds for seniors to adopt?

    • @andydufresne5297
      @andydufresne5297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jillcampbell8019 I don't know that it's a particular breed per se. Some breeds may be generally less active (like pugs) than other breeds, which is nice if the senior isn't too active. Bichon frises and French bulldogs are pretty popular among older folks as well. Just remember, there are _always_ exceptions in energy and temperament within each breed. You'd do best to meet the dog you are interested in in person, so you can guage for yourself what his or her energy and temperament is like.
      When looking for a dog, look for one that seems that it will fit into the older person's abilities and lifestyle.
      * For example, an older person who doesn't get a lot of exercise will usually do best with a dog that does not need very much exercise (unless there are other dogs and people in the house to play with the new dog).
      * Someone with a bad back might not be able to handle a larger dog or a dog that needs a lot of exercise. The older person's physical limitations, if any, should be considered in choosing the right dog.
      * If you are older, and there is no family member to take the dog if you should die, then I personally think you should reconsider getting a dog. Because if your dog has become substantially older by the time you pass away--or if you should need to go into a nursing home or other facility and be unable not take your dog with you--your dog's chance of finding a new home might be slim.
      * If you *do* decide to get a dog -- but there will be no one to care for it if you should die -- then look for an older dog. A dog that will keep you company and still hopefully have at least a few good years of life left. For example, maybe you can find a healthy, housebroken, even-tempered 7- or 8-year-old spaniel, or mixed breed. A dog that hopefully has another 4-6 years left in him. Again, if you are looking at a specific breed, make sure you understand the health issues of that breed so you have some idea of what you might expect.
      * For some people who feel too old to adopt another dog, consider fostering dogs instead. It may not be for everyone, but for those who are up to the challenge, it's another way to get doggie companionship without a long-term commitment.
      *If you find your dog at a shelter or an event at a pet store, do your best to determine whether the dog you are interested in is truly already house broken (you don't want to deal with that), reasonably even tempered, the right energy level for you, and good with kids (like your grandkids) or other adults (if relevant).

    My Sadie is a Shepard heeler mix, she protects her kitty brothers and sisters, can hear a ruckus between the cats and come barreling in like the referee,
    At first I wasn’t sure but I allowed her to be who she is and now I understand.
    And, get this, I always do a headcount of the animals before I leave the house and I have learned that with my Sadie girl! I cannot verbally speak their names when I’m looking for them and I also have to be Cautious that I don’t even have a thought process of me looking for the cats otherwise she senses it and picks up on it so easy and will come barreling in and help me start searching for the kitty cats

We see a lot of red and blue cattle dogs here in Australia. They are the best of dogs but best on properties with jobs. Great mates for workmen and farmers who revere them. Long lived with no particular health issues, strong and able. Very, very loyal, nothing like like seeing a good owner with his beloved blue heeler ever beside him. Generally as I say a tradesman or farmer. I think that they are very much a man’s dog too.

As the proud (and occasionally stressed out) mama of a heeler/lab mix, I 100% concur with everything Lee said. She is an amazing, loving, smart, agile dog, but she is also the Energizer Bunny. There is no amount of exercise that stops her. She is my velcro snugglebug, my cat herder, my mountain climber, and my flip-flop destroyer. She needs ALLLLLL the attention, all the time, but I wouldn't trade her for anything.

    My first rescue, Ellie May was a Catahoula. She was the last dog left at the Rescue center. I was hesitant to get her. The woman there looked stressed cause Ellie May was filled with "ENERGY". I decided to adopt her. Best decision I ever made. She is no longer with us but was the best dog I had ever had.

    I’ve been so stoked for Ella’s story!!! She looks so much like my Springador, Bruno. He’s also so high-energy and driven that he never stops unless we get him exercised and remind him it’s night time and time to calm down. It’s the mix of Lab and Spaniel in him, too! 😂❣ Love what you do, Lee. You’re one in a million. Give Ella a big kiss from her boy Bruno in Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    I have an aussie Shepherd and chocolate lab, and she just turned 5. I can attest that up til now she was a total ball of energy. Now she's starting to mellow out. She still loves to herd my cats, and tries to herd any other animal she sees outside.

    I got a pair of dogs at the shelter, seniors, who were not jumping at us when we met them. But they're so full of love now and character. We bought a van to enjoy the summer holiday with them and go on adventures!

    Beautiful girls, Ella is. I loved her from the moment I saw her in your video, hiding under that little table. I knew she would be all right when she took off with you and seeing her jumping into your car before the door was all the way open was sp precious. My current dog, a Springer Spaniel (Field) is like Ella too, super high engergy, anxiety, scared, constandly in motion and so on. She even broke her tail at one time from wagging it to furiously. She was returned by her first owner, because he could not handle her. She made him mad. He thinks of himself being a super trainer and if a dog not respond to that, then he says it's the dogs fault. I took her as a foster. She is a handful, has quite a few quirks, but sure is trainable, has an excellent recall and bonded to me from day one. She is mine now. I love her to bits and I'm lucky to have friends who help me out when needed. We take turns taking each others dogs to the off leash trails. There are four dogs and they know each other well.

    I agree with everything you said. I rescued a chihuahua min pin cross…. Wow! Now that is a hurricane in a tornado amount of energy!!!! The first week we just evaluated each other…. Not only does she have a high energy level, the silly girl is smarter than I am!!!! I took it real slow with my girl, and the results are phenomenal! I couldn’t ask for a better companion!!!! You are so right! If you let them be what they are meant to be…. Solid gold!!!!

    unlike animal hoarders who selfishly have a bunch of animals and can not tell them apart or see their needs, here you can see the unique understanding and personal relationship with every animal one on one, understanding the breed, the character and more deeply the soul of every creature ...

    My lab mix was pretty energetic too. We actually never stopped training her. She was lab/springer and border collie and she learned commands and skills with my parents and me. (I taught her commands in English,French,and hand signals.) She was an overly active dog but she was just the sweetest. Now the dog we have,Jack,who we adopted after Maddy passed,we are using training to instill confidence and make him feel like learning is a great way for him to garner confidence. Maddy and Ella sound pretty similar in the energy level. She was great for a hike,game for everything,but if I wanted to chill and watch a movie she was always game. Lots of bellyrubs for Ella. She's beautiful!

    We have a black lab/Anatolian Shepard. People we got her from was going to send a kill shelter. So I said I wanted her sight unseen. She is so standoffish still 3 yrs later. We had to gate her in the living room so she would stay around us. She was excited when my grandkids but she has never jumped on anyone or licked anyone. She has her hidden spot in the living. She comes to us when she wants attention and now will sleep on our bed. She is so beautiful and we are so lucky to have her in our pack of 7 dogs.

    Ella reminds me of our Jake who is a black Lab - Plott Hound mix. He is nearing nine years old and hasn't slowed down at all! He is also a very anxious dog and so pack centered (we have 4 rescues) that he hates being out of sight range of any of the other dogs or myself. Oddly, he seems to be alright with my husband not being home. But, the thing I love most about Jake is that he has never met another dog that he didn't want to bring into the pack. He would take in every stray if he were calling the shots! :)

    Wonderful! I'm going to jump to a concern. Whoever does the closed captioning made a huge error and it should be known. Lee was talking about the dog's HERDING. The captioner typed HURTING. Big difference, reason obvious. Otherwise, wonderful to learn another lesson on the personality of a new dog, a mix between chocolate lab and blue herder. (captioner !) Thank you, Lee!

      The captioning is extremely unreliable. Any accent or different pronunciation of a word greatly distorts the results.

    Ella is GORGEOUS❤❤❤ This is SOOOO true! It’s like the hype for Aussies/Mini Aussie’s or Huskies, etc ; People want to own breeds for aesthetic purposes without taking into account the specific breed traits & needs of the dog. They’re working dogs & NEED a job to do to avoid severe anxiety & destructive behaviors. Our Jaxson boy looks a lot like sweet Miss Ella!🥰🥰 He’s our amazing loving & VERY active 7 year old Boxer/GSP/Lab super mutt ( his entire DNA makeup is all working dogs.) We had no idea what breed(s) He was when we got him at 7 weeks old. My husband came home with him tucked into his coat, Jaxson had been gifted to hubby from a coworker who’s dog had puppies….. he’s been with us since then & the separation anxiety when he was NOT exercised/working before being kenneled, oh boy! It was BAD but if we took him for a nice fast walk outside or played an intense fetch session for 10-15 minutes- it’s like a completely different dog! 😂 He’s pooped but content on the drive home & not interested in window sniffles. 🤣 THANK you for sharing this 🫶🏼❤️🐾 This really is SUCH an IMPORTANT ISSUE! If I had a dollar for every shelter dog I was told was surrendered due to “being bigger or more active than they ASSumed 🙄💔 “ he’s like a completely different dog 😂 sleeping in the car in the way home not interested in window sniffles 🤣🤣🤣 thank you for sharing this 🫶🏼❤️🐾 This really is SUCH an IMPORTANT ISSUE! If I had a dollar for every shelter dog I I’ve worked with & networked that ended up being surrendered due to “being bigger or more active than their NOT-owner ASSumed 🙄💔 “

    Lee makes a good point about Ella chasing her tail and him instead of saying no, just giving her an alternative. For puppies in the first year of live the most important thing is to give them confidence, so you don't wana be telling them no, you just give them something else to do. That's how dogs raise their own young, they let them get away with a lot, unless Momma is weaning them, then she can get angry. I say the same thing is important for rescue dogs because you're teaching them from scratch.
    My dog is neurodivergent, she has sudden onset aggression with other animals that from 6months old just got worse and worse and the more I socialised her the worse she got, I have lot of rules for the people more than the dog, I do tell her no of course. But if she has an episode there is no snapping her out of it I've had to teach myself to snap out of shock and just grab her.
