Fantastic approach with unfavorable wind conditions. I have been able to observe the difficulty of piloting, on final approach, in these conditions. But they make it so easy that explains the professionalism of the pilots and how safe we travel by plane. Graet job and thank you once again for feeling what it's like to fly a plane.

Paul, thanks for watching! Yes, the weather looked awful. But it was much better than forecasted. The forecast showed in addition to the wind some bad thunderstorms for our arrival time. This was also the reason for the large amount of extra fuel. Many greetings to Kent!
Thanks for watching and your great feedback! When it is very windy, usually the weather also may change very quickly. Clouds are coming and going. This is also true for thunderstorms. We know about those possibilities before because we check the weather forecasts for the flight. For this flight, we took - for example - a good amount of extra fuel because thunderstorms were forecasted for our arrival time. As you have seen in the video, the thunderstorms were already gone but the wind was still there.

Thanks for watching and your good feedback! No, I do not find flying into the clouds disconcerting. It is very normal and happens on most of the flights for a while. As long as we do not fly a visual approach, we rely on the instruments and the outside view is optional. It is just for our pleasure or helps to verify the position of other airplanes. We are trained to fly without outside references.

Stunning views as the aircraft descended through the clouds, absolutely beautiful. I have always wondered how often Pilots have to requalify, is it a standard requirement or does it vary from Airline to Airline? Thanks again for a lovely flight.
Thanks for watching and for sharing your good feedback! Also many thanks for your financial support of the channel! Twice a year we do train for 2 days in the simulator. The training ends with a check which is done by an examiner who is authorized by the aviation authority to check pilots. Also, we are checked yearly in the airplane by a check pilot. This is called linecheck and the checkpilot has to make sure that we work in accordance with all standards and valid procedures. In addition, once a year, we have to undergo flight safety and security training and check. This is usually done together with cabin crew members and includes such things like fire fighting, evacuation training and using the emergency slides ….
Thanks for you good feedback! We always switch both autopilots on when the autopilot is flying an ILS approach. This is standard procedure. And with the autopilot disconnect switch, they are both deactivated again when we fly manually.
Excellent video and good landing - you deserve a Krugbier after coping with those gusty conditions. I spend time here in Basingstoke in a full-size 737 simulator; it's not easy to maintain the approach speed and path accurately. How often do you glance at the instruments to check the speed, or is it all done by feel and experience?
Thanks for watching and for your financial support of the channel as a member! We do not fly by feelings. Instead, we continuously scan the instruments and adjust thrust levers and the sidestick as needed. We do not always include the exact power setting of the engine in the scan. If we are getting slow or too low, we just add thrust as needed. The amount of required change of the thrust levers is done in regard to the own experience.
I agree, he did a great job! Go arounds can happen on any approach but are luckily very rare. Most of the time, it is not needed - even during challenging approaches. We are always prepared for a go around.
Wow! Now that’s what you call a great landing! The FO deserves a praise! I noticed when you were on final there was a little bit of crabbing going on (you were slightly sideways). I don’t know why, but whenever I go flying, I always like the Captain as pilot flying, but in this one your FO nailed it! I should trust FOs more as pilot flying! At what point would there be to do a go around? Were you quite close to doing a go around in this landing? Regards, Louis.
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! The FO is very experienced. As you saw in the video, he was flying the approach perfectly. I could not have done it better. During this approach everything was fine. The First Officer kept all the parameters in limits. So there was no reason for a go around. We are doing go arounds for example if the approach is not stabilized or if the airplane is not controllable any more or if we do get a windshear alert. Have a nice day!
What an approach! Beautifully smooth given how you were being buffeted by the wind. The cameras focused on the instrument panels - are they new? The images are crystal clear! Apologies if this has been asked and answered, why do you have to wait a certain time from landing to shutting down the engines? Thanks for another great video! 🇦🇹🛫🌍🛬🇩🇪🧑🏻✈️
Thanks for watching and your great feedback! The instrument panel camera is not new. It was just placed at a different position, closer to the screens. The good thing is that the picture is much better to read. The bad thing is that there are way more reflections on the screens in comparison to the old camera position. On sunny days, it may be very difficult due to the reflections. I will continue to work on this to get the best possible solution for future videos!.
Spot on landing! One question, is FD on or off durings ILS approaches pilot discretion, or company procedures? Some Airbus youtubers say they turn the flight director off as soon they disengage the autopilot for ILS approaches. For me, flying at home with my desktop simulator, it’s much easier with the flight director on. :)
Morning Sir, nice video, always like to dive into the clouds, is it bettet to land with manual thurst in gusty winds or is that up to the pilot flying 🤔
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! The pilot flying decides if he or she wants to fly with autothrust on or off. Some prefer autothrust on, others prefer autothrust off in weather conditions like these.
Thank you for another good video. I just wondered if you could perhaps answer my question please. I recently flew on an A320 seated over the wing and when leaving the ramp and after landing there is a noise which sounds almost like somebody is storing a piece of wood. could you explain what this is ?
Thanks for watching and your great feedback! I am not sure about the origin of the noise. It may be coming from the brakes. The other noise, which sounds like a barking dog, origins from the PTU, which transfers hydraulic power from one system to another.
Amazing and professional video as always! I have a question if I may: When do you usually activate the APP phase? Is there a certain time always? And what does it do?
Thanks for your great feedback! In regards to the activation of the approach phase there are differnt options. Easiest option is to fly along a preprogrammed approach routing. Then the activation of the approach phase will be done automatically when the FMGS calculates that it is time to reduce the speed from 250 knots to green dot speed for the approach. Very often, we do activate it by hand if we start flying a selected speed below 10000 feet or if we want the plane already early to fly green dot speed. When the approach phase is activated, the plane flies green dot speed when clean, S speed with flaps 1, F speed with flaps 2 and 3 and the approach target speed when in landing configuration. Speed must be managed. Selected speed would be overriding the managed speeds.
I would not call it intense pressure. I would say he was highly concentrated and had to work hard on the sidestick and the thrustlevers to keep the plane on track. This - for sure - increases the pulse and the breathing frequency.
This landing is beautiful, I'd like to understand something. The pilot maneuvers the stick by adapting it to the septum he sees on the PFD display, or by feeling the movement of the airplane on his person. Thanks for your reply and congratulations. Have a nice weekend
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! We use the instruments as a primary source for our inputs. Sure, we also feel something. But especially in the clouds, it is dangerous to fly by the feelings because they may be completely wrong.
Hey, I go to see my family in Germany every year, in Paderborn. I have to fly from Manchester to Düsseldorf. If you ever do one of your full flight videos, could you do one from Manchester to Düsseldorf?
Thanks a lot for watching and for supporting the channel as a member! I will keep your request in mind! As soon as I am scheduled next time from Manchester to Düsseldorf, I will try to record and to publish a video. It may take a while because my duty schedule is always a surprise. Please stay tuned! Have a nice day!
Thanks for your good feedback! I currently work on the MCDU topic. It is difficult due to reflections and the very limited possible camera locations. One of the next videos will show the "live" MCDU during our approach preparation and on the ground during the full flight preparation. I hope that you will like it.
very good video as always and very instructive, but shouldn’t you have the runway in sight before turning off the autopilot? you were in the clouds when the FO took manual flight.
Thanks for watching, your good feedback and your question! We should have the runway in sight at the minimum descent altitude or the decision altitude of the instrument approach. The autopilot can be switched off whenever the pilot flying wants to do it. It does not matter if the plane is in clouds or flying in nice weather. Usually, we fly instrument approaches. They do not require any outside views until the decision altitude. And they can be flown completely manually, unless it is an autoland approach in fog.
Good question! This is in accordance to the new Airbus SOP. Airbus changed the briefing to the new style a while ago. The pilot flying does the setup. And the pilot monitoring checks it and briefs the highlights. Then the pilot flying explains how he or she wants to fly the approach and the taxi in after landing.
@ interesting, although we are trying to get more aligned with Airbus SOPs my airline hasn’t adopted that approach for briefing, it’s still the PF’s job to lead an interactive briefing, we also try to reduce the ‘how’ unless it’s part of a mitigating a threat
The new SOPs are the result of inputs from the airlines and a working group which consisted of representatives of several airlines and Airbus. My understanding is that it is not mandatory for an airline to implement the newest Airbus SOPs. An airline can still use the old version or even create own SOPs as long as it is related to the normal procedures.
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Configuration 3 is a possibility but not mandatory. I also would have chosen flaps full as pilot flying. The plane was not very heavy and has a good amount of power. The pitch at flaps full is lower as if we would land with flaps 3. Also, it was gusty, but we got no major windshear reports from other airplanes or the tower.
Yes. The pilot flying is using it to steer the airplane. The pilot monitoring is using the push to talk button for the radio, which is located at the sidestick.
I work on additional views. The ECAM screens are very difficult to show because of lots of reflections. The PFD/ND camera also records the screens. But they are unreadable. Camera locations are very limited. But I will try to find solutions to show more. It may take a while. Please stay tuned.
Why hand control over from the pilot flying or first officer in this case to the captain right before turning off onto the taxiway? Is that because the pilot that landed needs to relax for a moment from the focused concentration?
@@JeffreySmith1 This is in accordance to company procedures. The Captain is always taxiing the airplane, also when the First Officer is pilot flying. Different airlines have different procedures in regard to this. They all do an operational risk evaluation and decide afterwards who will be allowed to taxi the airplane.
The video is in realtime. If you check the touchdown timestamp and the timestamp at the parking position, you will see that it was less than 3 minutes from the runway to the parking position. Düsseldorf is a nice airport. Usually, taxiing in takes only a few minutes.
He made a great approach and a good landing! Due to the weather and the turbulence, the stabilization system of the cameras made the picture even more shaky.

Nice to hear the (sorry I cant spell it but) "tchus" or cheerio. Great place Germany
Thanks for watching and your good feedback!
Thanks for the great video Captain. Quick question on AP - why were both AP1 and AP2 activated on approach before switching to manual flight?
The amount of required change of the thrust levers is done in regard to the own experience.
well done by the F/O👍 would have been nice to watch a go around though😂
I agree, he did a great job! Go arounds can happen on any approach but are luckily very rare. Most of the time, it is not needed - even during challenging approaches. We are always prepared for a go around.
Shaky weather, nice approach
Thanks for watching and your good feedback!
Tolles Video!! Welcher call-out ist das bei 16:23? Schwer rauszuhören, was genau gesagt wird. Würde mich interessieren :)
@@paul-leonardneuske7096 LAND was called out by the First Officer. It showed up in the FMA portion of the PFD.
Love these videos, what's the purpose of waiting 3 minutes though before engine shutdown please?
Engine cooldown time.
Brilliant approach and landing by your first officer, can I ask what's the difference between cat 1 and cat 2 when landing?
Spot on landing! One question, is FD on or off durings ILS approaches pilot discretion, or company procedures? Some Airbus youtubers say they turn the flight director off as soon they disengage the autopilot for ILS approaches. For me, flying at home with my desktop simulator, it’s much easier with the flight director on. :)
The decision about the usage of the flight director and autopilot and autothrust is done by the pilot flying.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Cool, thanks! Appreciate the effort you make on your channel. Very enjoyable and always something to learn.
Thank you very much for your response and explanation happy and safe flying to you
Amazing and professional video as always!
I have a question if I may:
When do you usually activate the APP phase?
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Got it. Thanks so much for the detailed explanation!
The First Officer was clearly under intense pressure since you could hear hik breathing heavily at 16:11
I would not call it intense pressure.
Nice
Thanks for watching and your good feedback!
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thanks for the good content
captain you video is verygood, but i wish you add a MCDU video angle ,so i can learn how to setup mcdu. thanks
Thanks for your good feedback! I currently work on the MCDU topic. It is difficult due to reflections and the very limited possible camera locations. One of the next videos will show the "live" MCDU during our approach preparation and on the ground during the full flight preparation. I hope that you will like it.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos captain: i am very exciting you can take my idear thankyou
very good video as always and very instructive, but shouldn’t you have the runway in sight before turning off the autopilot? you were in the clouds when the FO took manual flight.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thanks for the detailed reply, i just had some confusion on the topic. fly safe!
New subscriber any chance u could do a live full video from manchester
Thanks for subscribing! I will keep your request in mind and hope that I will be scheduled to Manchester soon.
Is it your company’s SOP that the PM does an approach briefing or is that just a personal thing you like to do to make sure you are on the same page?
Hello Cpt (I assume). I have a question about Airbus FBW assistance on this approach. Are you still reading the comments?
I read all comments.
Very nice video! Wouldn’t Conf 3 be more favorable in these gusty conditions?
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Configuration 3 is a possibility but not mandatory. I also would have chosen flaps full as pilot flying. The plane was not very heavy and has a good amount of power. The pitch at flaps full is lower as if we would land with flaps 3. Also, it was gusty, but we got no major windshear reports from other airplanes or the tower.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you very much for your response. I don’t have many hours on the airbus family! The 737 has stolen me back 😅
Both crew holding the stick?
Yes. The pilot flying is using it to steer the airplane. The pilot monitoring is using the push to talk button for the radio, which is located at the sidestick.
Danke! Kein Problem
Can we see the EWD in the next video…as to see thrust setting with auto thrust off.
I work on additional views. The ECAM screens are very difficult to show because of lots of reflections. The PFD/ND camera also records the screens. But they are unreadable. Camera locations are very limited. But I will try to find solutions to show more. It may take a while. Please stay tuned.
Can someone tell me why they had to wait 3 minutes after touch down for engine shutoff?
Cooldown time for the engines. If we would shutdown earlier and do this frequently, we may damage the engines.
11:13 I could hear someone screaming out in the cabin while crossing the cloud.
Thanks for your feedback! I cannot hear anybody screaming at 11:13. The approach was a little bumpy, but the passengers were calm.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos haha, i'm just joking, super nice landing in such a strong gusty condition.
Why did you need to wait for 20s before shutting down engines when on stand?
We have to observe a 3 minute cooldown time for the engines.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Interesting.. is that due to the close proximity of that stand to the runway meaning the taxi in was
The video is in realtime. If you check the touchdown timestamp and the timestamp at the parking position, you will see that it was less than 3 minutes from the runway to the parking position. Düsseldorf is a nice airport. Usually, taxiing in takes only a few minutes.
He was all over the place trying to land that plane.
He made a great approach and a good landing! Due to the weather and the turbulence, the stabilization system of the cameras made the picture even more shaky.
