    I apologize for the bad stabilization of the PFD/ND. Reason is that this camera is new as replacement for the previous broken camera. The basic stabilization was turned on to reduce camera vibrations caused by the airplane. Instead, the stabilization system of the camera added a good amount of movement to the picture all the time when there was any change in direction or acceleration or deceleration of the airplane.

    Love these videos💯💯. If I may ask, how exactly is the brake check done? I hear pilots mention it during taxi but I don't see any huge difference in speed . Or is it something little?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for your good feedback! The brake check is just a functional check of the brakes. When we start taxiing, I hit the brake pedals and see and feel what happens. It is usually not a large speed difference.

    Outstanding as usual but this was one was particularly interesting as I am from Edinburgh so it's my home town. Your videos are wonderful - I have been interested in aviation since I was a child 50 years ago and never could I have imagined then it might be possible to watch a film of a flight all the way from Dusseldorf to Edinburgh. Just perfect, thank you so much.

    Amazing video and so nice to see EGPH again and this time on a full flight! Quick question, when you are given a "level at" by ATC is it preferable to program that restriction in the mcdu if not there already and let the plane fly managed descent, or is it quicker to manually select a rate of descent on the FCU and use the visual ref on the ND to aim to be at that level at the reference point?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for watching and for your financial support of the channel as a member! When we get an instruction from ATC to be at a certain level at a certain point, we usually enter the value in the MCDU flight plan. The easiest way to do the descent is to do it managed and to start it not much before reaching the newly calculated top of descent. This will be most economical, but it does not take an early reduction of the vertical speed into account. So sometimes, we enter into the MCDU an altitude 1000 feet lower but dial the correct altitude in the FCU.

      Good question! I listened on our radio to an ATIS transmission. Those transmissions provide weather information and runways in use.... But it looks like, it was not what I expected. It sounds like Amsterdam or so. Usually those same frequencies are used by several airports which have a certain distance. If getting closer to the destination airport, we for sure can hear the correct transmission.

    I can’t help but wonder if your flight contained the returning Tartan Army… from what I’ve read they left quite an impact in Germany and represented Scotland very well.
    It’s probably just my perception, but was the departure from a rather dreich Düsseldorf fast? Felt like it took no time to get to V1! Made me wonder if the aircraft was light.
    Beautiful approach with a view of the Bridges, and a very smooth looking landing. I enjoyed seeing the aircraft bearing down, reflected on the windscreen of the tug.

    May I ask a question? Is there a certain amount of time after takeoff you have to hand fly the airbus or can you engage AP as soon as you're both ready? I'm assuming its more fun to fly by hand for as long as possible!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thank you for sharing your great feedback! The minimum autopilot engagement altitude is 100 feet above ground, but not less than 5 seconds after lift off. Usually, we engage the autopilot much later. It is up to the pilot flying to decide whatever he or she likes. Most of the pilots I have seen switch it on latest at about 10.000 feet.

    May I ask, on the navigation display, what are the two large yellow arrows that sometimes dance around and converge just below the bearing values between the range circles?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      I do assume that you mean the 2 white RMI pointers. These are Radio Magnetic Indicator pointers which point to VOR 1 and VOR 2. If you lookup the navigation display in the video at 57:28, you can see clearly in the right and left lower corner that we tuned TLA VOR on both VORs and that the pointers are both pointing to the location of TLA VOR. TLA VOR is also displayed on the map of the navigation display. Here you can see that the conventional navigation aids (VOR) match the navigation display map which is provided by the inertial reference system and updated via GPS, as long the GPS is reliable available.

Fantastic video as usual! I really like that this channel doesn't cut out the waits and shows all details. After watching many of your videos may I have one question: Why are First Officers not allowed to taxi? I guess because it requires a lot of experience. But how does a First officer acquires this real experience (outside the simulator)? How do they make sure that new captains already have a lot of experience taxiing. I get it, Heathrow or Frankfurt are no training grounds, but there are many small airports with little traffic..

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for your good feedback and your question! You are right. The Captain is always taxiing the airplane, even if he or she is not pilot flying. This is a company decision and procedure. All airlines do operational risk evaluations of the procedures. In regard to the taxiing, the result was that the company decided that only Captains should taxi the airplane. Some airlines are doing it this way. Other airlines allow the First Officers to taxi the airplane.
      If the First Officer is upgraded to a Captain, he or she receives comprehensive training, which includes the taxiing of the airplane.

      Thanks for watching and your good feedback! The CAPT PFD showed check altitude for a short moment because of a discrepancy between the CAPT PFD altitude and the FO PFD altitude. It went away as soon as the FO PFD was also set to local altimeter setting. Have a nice day!

      Thank you very much for watching, your great feedback and your important financial support of the channel! The airlines do operational risk assessments in regard to the SOPs and decide on the basis of the result who is allowed to taxi the airplane. Different airlines have different policies.

      Thanks for your good and very personal feedback! It is great to hear that my videos are inspiring you and you think now about a career in aviation. Landing an Airbus A320 is very similar to landing a conventional airplane. Start of the flare is at about 30 feet. With a heavy A321 it may be a little earlier or with a lightweight A319 a little later. Retarding the thrust levers at about 20 feet - when you hear retard - is usually a good idea. I wish you lots of fun in the fullflight simulator!

    May I ask you a short question: considering only the A320ceo family, do you as an A320 pilot notice a significant difference in whether you're flying an A320-214 (CFM 56-5B4), an A320-216 (CFM 56-5B6) or an A320-232 (IAE V2500) - for example performance-wise? And what do you actually prefer to fly with?
    Thanks in advance for your answer and have a nice weekend!!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for watching and your good feedback! I do not notice a big different between the mentioned engine variants. The A320-216 provides less power for takeoff. So on some runways we are restricted in regard to the takeoff weight. But when flying the airplane, I do not obsereve noticeable differences. I also wish you a great weekend!

    Good morning, thanks for another great video! ✈️ What is the reason for the "VLS check"? I've googled it and found that the VLS from the FMC differs from that on the PFD. But still not understand why you add several knots on the Vapp. For my understanding the Airbus keeps a constant GS(mini) and modifies the Vapp according to the wind. So why is it necessary to modify the Vapp so to say "on your own"? As the VLS is not the stall speed there should also be no danger? Thank you in advance for being so polite and answering the questions! Regards from "Hahn" 😊

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      First of all, thanks a lot for your financial support of the channel as a member! This helps to keep the channel alive!
      As you googled correctly, there are 2 different VLSs displayed. One on the PFD and one on the MCDU. Depending on the airplane modification status, they may have a different source. The PFD VLS is calculated on the basis of our entered CG and aerodynamic data (angle of attac). The MCDU VLS is calculated on the basis of the Zero Fuel Weight, which we entered from the loadsheet plus our actual fuel in the tanks.
      If the PFD VLS is higher than the MCDU VLS, we add the difference to the approach speed in the MCDU.
      It would not be dangerous if we would not do the VLS check with a possible increase of the approach speed.
      The VLS has nothing to do with the Groundspeed Mini Function.
      Have a nice day!

    • @danielpike3778

      Thank you ✈️👍 do you want to keep a certain margin to the VLS on the PFD?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      No. Ideally, they both are the same. If the VLS on the PFD is higher than the VLS on the MCDU, we find out the difference and add the difference to the approach speed on the MCDU. The result will be that the plane will fly not slower than the VLS PFD plus 5 knots.
