Wood turning a tulip with 6 way inside out setup

  • This flower turning uses a 6 way inside out open ended method to create the likeness of a flower. The method has a lot of potential for exploration by scaling it up or down and varying the inside shape. Had some problems with overexposure. Hoping some fellow turners try it out.
Most of the turning speeds were around 700rpm and sanding didn't go over 350 grit. I squeezed 2 days of work into half an hour of video.

Thank you Mike. I bought a Shopsmith off of you in 2012 and have used it almost every day. Can’t wait to try out one of these tulip turnings.

Thanks for sharing, those petal’s certainly look fragile.
Good job can you give an idea of measurements whilst your turning as this would make reproduction easier.

Incredible work. I'm curious. How long in real time did it take you to make the tulip, start to finish?

I cut a bunch of the staves in advance in 4 or 5' lengths and then cut what I need for each project so that 's a couple hours. Then in a couple hours I can cut to length and tape together 6 sections and do a shallow turning for the inside and l pull them apart , reverse them and glue and clamp. Then next day I'll chuck and turn and sand the outside..

3' throat, no sheet metal. Was from a burned out shop so I had to re-pour the bearings and other stuff

Some dangerous practices in this video: Sanding the internal faces with his hand over the toolrest with vertices whizzing by that could catch fingers or clothing at any time was about as far as I could go. There were a number of other bad practices too but I just had to stop watching. 😵‍💫

With 52 years of turning I've learned what works and at times what doesn't. Appreciate your concern.

      No Gloves on turning Maschines.
It's dangerous with gloves, if you get caught somewhere with them, your arm is off.
1e paragraph when working on rotating machines. sorry muhamad,
please dont do it, i want you to keep your hands. greetings from germany👍🏼
