Wow, that was a close call! ❤Beautiful ❤
Yeah, it was a little scary!!! Thanks for the feedback!
That is an awesome bowl! Great work DD
Thank you, Jiggsy! I appreciate that!
You got lucky with that bowl, anyone else would have lost that bowl with that Rookie move.
While I'm not the most seasoned turner, this is not the first tenon I've removed. It is the first I've had that actually split up the middle, which is the only reason this happened.
That being said, I will be changing some things about my tenon removal to avoid the possibility going forward. I appreciate your watching and feedback.
Beautiful!
Thank you, Scott! I appreciate that!
First time watcher definitely enjoy the video, and my heart jumped out and that broke. That thing was a spin around like that. I am a newbie I’ve had my lead since my birthday of February 2023 got a lot to learn. Thank you for sharing will be looking for more of your videos.
Thank you for watching! The main thing is take every precaution you can, and don't go past your comfort level! I appreciate the feedback, and I hope to see your work soon!
@@TournageDubois thank you for the advice which I do try to pay attention to caution. So far the hardest for me is being trying to learn to sharpen my tools correctly and a piece of pecan wood that is on my lathe right now🤪🤪 it is some of the hardest wood I have tried to turn so far and it is making me crazy
Sounds like a good time! If you haven't yet, definitely make a grinding setup high on your list for an upgrade. It will make a HUGE difference.
@@TournageDubois I invested in the wolverine set up with a verbal jig. I think a lot of it just goes back to being patient when sharpening.
@lyndaowen2154 that is true, but definitely worth it!
Beautiful bowl
Thank you, Jean!
Nice bowl. I'm glad that you left the "battle scars" on the bottom. As you said, they're part of the wood's journey.
Yes they are! I truly appreciate your feedback!
Turned out beautiful and it looks like a tree within the bowl in the grain! Super excited with your new set up and to see what you create moving forward!
Thanks Kieran! I'm pretty excited too!!!
A very beautiful bowl. I use odles oil works better if done on lathe wipe on let it set for 20minutes then buff off at slow speed. That's how I do it, choice is yours. Oh try a cloth rag.
Thanks for the feedback! I had already removed the tenon, so putting it back out would proven to be difficult, but I'll think about that down the road!
Awesome! It is a beast for sure.
Thanks, Mark! It sure is, and I LOVE it!!!!
Boa Noite amigo, chegando para prestigiar seu trabalho. Ficou perfeito sucesso. Conectado""
Thank you very much! I am glad you appreciated it and I am thankful for the feedback!
Jealous of the new lathe. You deserve it! Nice work.
Thanks, Barry! Appreciate the feedback!
Beautiful
Thank you kindly! I appreciate the feedback!
Loving the new setup 👍 Beautiful bowl - this turning business definitely keeps us on our toes😀
Thanks, Jim. And yeah, after that I think my toes will be calloused quickly!
Beautiful wood and beautiful work.
Thank you very much!
beautiful piece my friend, good save and dang thats a sexy machine ;)
Thanks, Todd! I appreciate thay, and have been drooling since you got yours!!!
Sehr schöne Schale, trotz dem kleinen Unglück 👍👏👌
Thank you very much!!! I am glad it worked out!
Nice Bowl and that is a Sweet Lath.
Thank you, William! I'm pretty happy with both for sure!
Fantastic bowl, brother! You didn’t waste any time in maxing out Sully!!!
Great piece, and a great save!
Thanks, Seth! Definitely wanted to push him a bit, and he didn't disappoint! Appreciate you!
the bowl turned out great Daniel, if I ever get the funds to replace the Nova, that lathe you have will be my next ! Thumbs up as always
Thanks, Doug! It is indeed a beast, and I love it. Really helps being able to turn such large items with the safety of a tailstock. That live center is SUPER sharp, so I'll have to get one that won't split the tenon when it gets thinner!
Stunning piece and yes that lathe is a BEAST love the sliding bedways like the engraved logo too I do mine the same Well done
Thanks, Colin! Always appreciate your feedback!
Very pretty bowl and I love the colors in it. A number of years ago I turned a double crotch piece of Tulip. Much smaller than this one. The overall size of your bowl really shows off the wood.
Nice work!
The new lathe is pretty cool looking as well. I knew the bed slid back but did not know it did it under power.
Gary
Thanks, Gary! I was pretty happy as my largest bowl to date. The power is great, super smooth, and runs like a champ!
Gorgeous big bowl Double D and brilliant new lathe! 😃
Thanks, Val!!! Super happy with the decision!!!
Jolie Pièce Daniel et ouf pas de bobo , bravo 👍👏
Thank you! Definitely grateful that I wasn't hurt badly!
Good piece with a story really like it good job
Thank you, Uncle Rob! I really appreciate that!
great video! that machine is awesome I am so jealous
I am happy for you and wish you lots of luck with it!
Sully Rules!
Thanks, Luie! I have been blessed with this opportunity for sure! I will give Sully a pat on the headstock for you!
@@TournageDubois 🤪
That's a biggen alright, Daniel. Good job!
Thanks, Billy! I appreciate your support!
That crack looks scary! Great turning piece!
Thank you very much! That didn't scare me nearly as much as the Tenon splitting! Thanks for the feedback and for watching!
@@TournageDubois Yeah, that's always gets my heart racing
When you said you got a bigger lathe you weren't kidding. That laser thing is new. I have some catching up to do. I like the bowl. It has some nice coloring.
Thanks, Kevin! Yeah, Sully is a beast! Glad you like the bowl!
A great looking bowl nicely done and that lathe is impressive,
Kind regards
From Will 👍 😊
Thanks Will! It truly is impressive, and I'm glad I went that route!
Very nice bowl. 👍
My heart sunk when it came off, but thankfully it was saved. I’m interested in trying out Odie’s as well.
Mine did top, John! Thankfully it worked out OK, but lesson learned!
Awesome man, as per PM standby for something from mine
Thanks, Sid! Can't wait to see your project!
Very nice, Daniel! I don't know how to use anything sparingly 😁Glad the new lathe is getting a workout, great job once again👍
Thanks, Mike! I obviously used too much, but learned a lot from it!!!
Hi Daniel, I see that you are going big on your new lathe, I like the finish of the bowl.
Thank you, Hans! Had to start big for sure!!!! My second project was Keychain kits.... LOL
Nice piece. Tulip wood is rare here in Montana and I would definitely have cored that.
I would have too, if I had a coring system. I appreciate the feedback and your watching! I am hoping to get a system down the road!
1st timer, subbed. glad it wasn't worse. A bowl that size scares me to death. But it looks amazing.
Thanks you for the feedback and the sub! Thats the first time I've had that happen, so yeah.... rather scary. Going to try a different live center that won't be so pointy down the road!
@@TournageDubois When things go wrong, we learn quickly.
Absolutely!!!
I have the 70-3040 myself and love it.. Glad to see the piece didn't skip across your shop. Time to invest in a vacuum chuck??
Glad you love yours too! It is a beautiful piece of machinery!
I will in the near future for sure!
@@TournageDubois I'd be willing to share how I made my own rotary adapter for the vacuum line if you're interested
Sure, I'm always interested in seeing how people do things!
That a a beautiful piece of poplar. You did a great job. Sorry about the unexpected nub break, but looks like alls well in the end. When you get tired of that lathe I’ll rent a truck and come get it. Thanks for sharing.
LOL Doug! You'll be first on my list if I get tired of it.
Great job on the bowl. Glad you didn't get hurt when the bowl jumped out on you. What laser system are you using to burn your logo if I might ask?
Yeah, I was glad I didn't get hurt either. Just a small scratch on my hand.
I use the Laserpecker 2 for my engraving.
Nice.
Thank you kindly!
Nice turn! Just letting you know... I'm super jealous that your Rikon is not sitting in my shop! 😂 V
LOL!!! Thanks, Mike! Definitely was a great upgrade!
Nice lathe..you had me nervous with that 1200rpm and a large crack but it survived lol. You should invest in a coreing system it will pay for itself with the extra couple of bowls you can get from the large blanks that lathe can handle.
Thanks for the content
Yeah, coring system is in the list! Just have to save up! Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Great bowl! If I heard correctly, the Odie’s oil is a hard wax/ oil finish similar to Rubio Monocoat without the curing agent. Rubio applies very well with a white scotch bright pad and then you buff it with the same (aided by a drill, etc) and you can get an amazing finish. I wonder if the same technique would work well with Odie’s?
Thank you!!! I have heard similar, so I'll try that down the road!
Bela peça amigo parabéns 🇧🇷
Thank you for the kind words!
Gorgeous bowl Daniel.
Glad you weren't badly hurt when it cam off.
I have looked at Odies but at the price it is not on my list of things to buy.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw. The good thing about the Odie's is that it doesn't Take much at all, and lasts a long time!
@@TournageDubois I ahve heard it doesn't take a lot but at £50 per jar it is a bit too expensive for me.
Yeah. It's a tough bit to spend that much up front.
Ufff...beautiful...too heavy and too big for me to do it...congratulations!!!
Thank you! It was quote heavy for sure!!! Glad it wasn't thay when the tenon split, or I could have been hurt a lot worse!
Please give updates on how well you like, dislike the 70-3040 as I'm looking to buy. Could it use a wider stance between legs for more balance?
I LOVE this lathe. Only a couple of "dislikes" which I go over in another video later on.
This thing is heavy enough that it does NOT move at all. I am SUPER glad I got this lathe.
Nice recovery!! Thank goodness for the tailstock! How do you like the tulip wood?
Thanks, John! The tailstock definitely saved me!
Tulip wood is a type of poplar, and it turns and finished very nicely!
PS use Scotchbrite to apply the Odies, you can apply it real sparingly that way!
Definitely gonna try that!
I love tulip wood, so beautiful. 😎
That's an amazing bowl Double D! So glad you left the mark on the bottom. Also, interesting how the heartwood inside the bowl resembles your channel logo. 😎
How do I go about getting that bowl? 😉
Thanks, Tim! I appreciate the feedback!
This bowl is beautiful, i havent turned any tulip yet but its on my todo list of woods to acquire. How do you still like this bigger Rikon lathe? Ive got the smaller 70-150 its been good as ive been learning but down the road i know ill need to get into a larger lathe.
I really love the new lathe. There are a couple of things that aren't my favorite, but I'll be talking about those in my next video.
@@TournageDubois Ill keep an eye out for that then!
Beautiful bowl Daniel!
Couple questions: why didn’t you cut it round on the bandsaw before turning and… have you tried Brads tongue honey as a finish? Again, great job! Stuart
Thank you, Stuart.
I didn't round it off because I wanted to see how the 3hp motor handled the awkward piece as well as check the stability of the lathe with the off balance piece.
I LOVE the Tung Honey; all of Brad's products are great. I am just out of the Honey at the moment.
For any beginners wondering, this size bowl blank is best to start turning at about 1800 rpm..stay safe.
I think 1,800 RPM is very fast, especially if it's as out of balance as this one was. The best way to guage a speed that is appropriate is to slowly increase the speed until you get a vibration, then back it off a touch to eliminate the vibration.
Nice bowl, Daniel. What do you think about the centrifugal sander? When that piece let loose, I was thinking you should have been wearing brown pants (lol).
Bill
Thanks, Bill. It was pretty scary, but glad it saved it! The inertia sander is good, I just need to practice with it more. Definitely better than power sanding.
Lovely bowl - my heart almost stopped when the tenon snapped! I also use the Odies - how did you like it?
Mine almost stopped too... but I was pretty sure it would kill me. I liked the Odie's oil, but definitely gotta learn better. Definitely will try some white scotchbrite next time.
@@TournageDubois I sent you a link to one of my very limited videos, applying Odies to a big Red Mallee burl bowl I made - really enjoyed your Mallee video too - cheers bud!
Thanks for that info! I'll take a gander!
Hi I just found your channel. Would it not be easier to cut a circle on the bandsaw before putting that on the lathe? Thank you Ron USCG RET
Sure, it could be. This was my first turning with the 70-3040, and I wanted to test put the torque, balance, stability, and how it handled a large off balance piece. I hope that makes sense, and thanks for watching!
@@TournageDubois Yes Thank you. After the beginning of next year when I move into my new shop I will also order the 3040, because I love my Rikon 12 22 VSR Ron
Excellent! Always fun to upgrade!!!
Nice one! Finish could be better tho 😝🙌
LOL, Brad.... it's DEFINITELY not Tung Honey!
Awesome machine. New? How much if you don't mind me asking.
Yes, new lathe! The retail is around $5,000 but they do run sales (which I took advantage of).
Nice job I think its a requirement when you get a bigger lathe to throw the biggest piece of wood you have on it. Now you need to get a coring setup to save all that wood on the inside of those huge bowls.
Thanks! Yeah, a coring setup is on the list for sure.... first I gotta get some more money, as Sully took it all!
Who did the horrible job of putting a plug on that cord plugged into the wall? Hope that’s not your lathe cord! Very beautiful bowl! Another 1/4” would have been devastating!
Nope, that's not the lathe cord. That is temp wiring for a test circuit.
If you had the One-way coring attachment you could have gotten a couple of more bowls instead of putting the center in shavings on the floor, if you do get the One-way be Shure and get the Carbid cutting tip, the high speed metal tip that comes with it is junk, well worth the extra money.
Thanks for the feedback. A coring setup will come down the road after I save up for it. I will keep that in mind!
Have you ever experienced a failure with CA glue used to fill cracks? As you may know, some turners (e.g. Richard Raffan) do not use CA because of possible failure in the future.
I have not ever run into that. If the cracks are significantly wider than I am comfortable with, then I will use additional filler for durability.
I would have cored it and mad a nested set.
If I had a coring set, I certainly would have.
Sweet looking bowl DD! No problem for the new RIKON! We seen you pee a little also😂 take care!
Yes, I CERTAINLY did. It was fun, but scary too!
where’d the name tournage dubois come from?
My last name is Dubois, which is French (meaning "of wood"). Therefore I went with "Tournage Dubois", which is French for "Turning of Wood".
As a 70-3040 owner, I'd suggest getting LARGE faceplates....
Thanks for the feedback! My buddy Todd (Duka Heritage) is doing some machining, and is making faceplate as well as custom steady rests, so I'll be getting some from him when they are all ready.

2nd comment lol

@@williamellis8993 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
the second time i ever used a lathe i got a nasty catch, lifted my gouge up with hand under it, the gouge then caught the top of the piece i was turning and slammed the tool back down onto the tool rest with my fingers underneath the tool. broke my pinky, and blackened both the ring finger and pinky nails. my fingers were purple/blue. i cursed, and paced back and forth for 5 minutes panicking and questioning everything, then i finished the damn project. never looked at the seemingly "high price" for handmade things negatively (ignorantly) again.
Been there, done that for sure! Hopefully you didn't give up on turning, either!
@@TournageDubois never. i get a craving to do it, especially when its too late at night to start anything. half the pieces i do now im just doing to turn something for the act of turning, and have no vision of what the end product will be.
