    My dad mistakenly bought Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" thinking it was John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" (1972).
    It immediately became my (7f) absolute favorite record. The opening riff changed my life. No more Disney Soundtracks for this little princess.
    To his credit, my dad bought me many albums that featured incredible guitar solos after this. It may have been a desperate attempt to stop the constant "Rocky Mountain Way".
    Anyway, . . .
    IF you like electric guitar, . . . 😉
    "Rocky Mountain Way " is worth a listen.

    You missed the entire point of the song. He isn't bragging, it's a sad song. He has everything that anyone ever wanted and he doesn't want it or doesn't need it. His friends think he has changed but it's them who can't handle his success that doesn't even make him happy. Some songs in the 70's were pretty deep.

      He was brought in to replace Bernie, the original 2nd guitar player of the Eagles. They want more credibility as a rock band. Funny story. Joe actually gave one of his Les Paul's to Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin. That guitar became Jimmy's number one. Jimmy played telecaster guitars before Joe gave him the Gibson.

    Mollyboy, this whole song is tongue-in-cheek. Although a lot of what he says is true (he did trash hotel rooms, etc.), he's really just mocking the rock star image. His fans are clearly in on the joke - Maserati and millions in the bank don't mean sh&t to Joe, he's as down to earth as they come. I knew his step father, George Walsh, a bit (he used to live in our building until passing away a few years ago in his mid-90s), but unfortunately, never got to meet Joe himself. But the dad was just like the son. Once we (my wife and I) met him, it was at least 2 years before we found out that he was Joe's father, because he didn't make a big deal about it. But in retrospect, we should have known something was up, because we never saw him when he wasn't wearing an Eagles t-shirt or baseball hat or denim Eagles jacket. Once he told us about the relationship, he explained that before each Eagles tour, Joe would send him a big box with one of each kind of Eagles clothing being sold for that tour - all in his size of course. How cool was that? Anyway, sorry for the long story, but just wanted you to know a bit more about the guy. (This song was from his solo career of course - not part of the Eagles original songs.)

      Joe went to Montclair HS in New Jersey. He was briefly in a band with my neighbor from the next block called "The Chessmen," that might have been his first band. They were on "American Bandstand," or some similar show, and at one time there was a B&W video clip online of that performance. I watched them jam a few times but never really got to know him (he was a year ahead of me). Joe was very generous to his MHS classmates, at least once when the Eagles were touring nearby, he gave everyone free tickets to great seats.

    • @Avicenna10
      @Avicenna10 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Awesome story. Like I said, I never got to meet him in person, but from things his dad told us about him, it sounds like something he would do. Wasn’t Joe’s mother a piano teacher or something? I think his dad told me she was some kind of music teacher, but I don’t remember. George Walsh, Joe’s dad, was a huge classical music fan. We noticed that he was going to, symphonies and ballets and such almost every day when they were playing at Lincoln Center in New York. When we asked him, he said Joe bought him season tickets every year. This was after Joe’s mom had already passed away, so Joe really seemed to take care of his dad from a distance, given that Joe was living in California at the time.

      @@Avicenna10 Nice that he took care of his dad--I believe he was Joe's step-father. Back in HS "The Chessmen" played at some small local venues, one was a church that held Saturday night mixers to give the teens something to do other than getting into trouble. They were basically covering the popular songs of the day. One I remember was "Gloria," which had just come out on the album by "Them" headed by Van Morrison. Those were the days.

    Any video you watch of late 70ish Eagles Joe is off in his own world and it looks like it's a hell of a place - he is an absolute giggle his interviews are amazing. When the Eagles got back together for the Hell Freezes Over tour he wanted to go- but the rest of the guys told him that if he didn't kick the booze and drugs they weren't having him... he did and he went on the tour. As far as this song, he was taking the absolute piss out of himself and that whole life he was leading. He straight up doesn't take himself seriously even now. He is an amazingly genuine guy and does an absolute shit ton of charity stuff.

    The usual answer to "what's making that noise" is a synthesizer. There are 3 synth parts in this: a bass part, that 'rubber band' sound and a little bit of another synth sound in the bridge.
    First thing you need to know about Joe Walsh is that he's an absolute nut, in a good way! In the Hotel California video, he was the one wearing the red bandana on his head and doing some goofy grins, oh and ripping it up on the Telecaster. Many of these lyrics on this song are very 'tongue-in-cheek'. That's just Joe. Gotta love him. Thanks for listening and sharing!
    Peace from SF

    • @dggydddy59
      @dggydddy59 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Well, that's not at all what it was like. That's quite a revisionist version of history that I doubt most people have ever heard before. Now, if you said they brought in Joe Walsh because Glenn Frey had always been trying to give the Eagles a harder edge from the beginning, which was why they had already added Don Felder, then you would've been right on. But they were definitely not in decline or anything remotely of the sort before he came along. Hotel California was a big selling album, absolutely, but their previous album, "Greatest Hits 1971-1975", is still their biggest selling album, as it was at the time, and Joe Walsh had absolutely nothing to do with anything about it. You can’t say a band was in decline when they have just had 5 multi-million selling albums in a row before Walsh was ever in the band. OK, have a good day. Cheers!

    Joe Walsh had a long career before he joined the Eagles in the mid-70's. His original band was James Gang, and their stuff is great. Then he did several solo albums and collaborated with many others. He was invited to join the Eagles, and their sound became much less country and much more rock after he joined. Other trivia: he sold his Gibson Les Paul custom to Jimmy Page when Led Zeppelin and James Gang were touring together in the early days of LZ. That is the guitar that made Jimmy famous. He is also Ringo Starr's brother-in-law; he's now married to Ringo's wife's sister. Joe tours with The Ringo Starr All-Star band on occasion.

    Joe Walsh is a treasure. Well-known before the Eagles with his band The James Gang. Try "Funk 49" by them. And as a solo artist, try "Rocky Mountain Way". He is very well regarded as a guitarist and is very funny, too (as you might be able to get a sense from Lifes been Good).

    The CLOWN PRINCE of Rock! Joe Walsh was the power in James Gang (THE BOMBER, FUNK #49, WALK AWAY), but really took off solo (ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY, IN THE CITY, ALL NIGHT LONG, ORDINARY AVERAGE GUY, ANALOG MAN etc.). He also joined EAGLES. That percussive sound is an African Thumb Piano. He was a real party animal - "Joe Walsh - a great bunch of guys." was a real quote from Glenn Frye.

    Joe Walsh is considered by music critics as one of the bast guitar players in music History. On this song, he opening kick and snare of “Life's Been Good” are joined after four bars by Walsh's Les Paul played through a Fender Twin Reverb; each time the pattern repeats itself, another electric guitar is layered in, using an assortment of Fender Twins, Tweeds and a Champ amp, miked with various condenser microphones ...

    Also, Joe Walsh is the inspiration behind Tom Petty’s song Don’t Come Around Here No More! Written by the guitarist of the Eurythmics(forgive me his name slips me) after he was partying with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. Joe was dating her at the time but they were in the middle of a fight & I guess Joe showed up the next morning, banging on the door & Stevie kept yelling, “Go away! Don’t come around here no more!” Rock N’ Roll!! I wish I could go back!
