May the Lord Watch is the definitive story of Little Brother, the North Carolina rap group composed of rappers Phonte, Big Pooh, and (formerly) producer 9th Wonder, the underground legends that bridged the gap between The Roots and Kendrick, Tribe and Cole, De La and Drake. The film follows the rise, breakup, and reunion of the preeminent 2000s rap group, but the heart of the documentary lies in the unfolding relationship between members Phonte and Big Pooh, which begins at the Durham HBCU North Carolina Central University, strains while coming of age together in the music industry, and resolves with an enduring friendship as the two men reunite and make their 2019 album May the Lord Watch.

Proud to have even been at the same school with these guys. Phonte gave me a ride from the mall one day back to the campus. He said, this is our new album as we rode in the Honda. It hadn't even been released yet. He asked what did I think? I said it's dope! But no offense, you guys sound like A Tribe Called Quest... he said no offense taken, that's actually a compliment! We consider ourselves to be the " little brother " to groups like A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul etc. That type of vibe. I was like WOW! Everything makes sense now. Moral of the story is, that just because you're in a group together, doesn't mean you know each other or are actually real friends. These guys had a chance meeting in college, formed a group on the fly, and had success, but never got a chance to really know each other. I'm glad Pooh and Phonte got a chance to reconnect and actually become real friends before this last album. With age and experience comes wisdom.

9th Wonder beats are what first made me want to actually rap. I dropped an EP a decade ago and sunk back into self doubt, depression, hopelessness and fear. Watching this joint here, it's making me want to raise DARK PRINCE from the dead once again.

A mutual friend of a friend was like, you love Slum Village so much, my friend’s friends have a rap group you might like. So a year before The Listening came out, connecting on some six degrees of separation ish, I met Phonte in front of his apartment. He played the entire album for me in his car. Broke my neck bobbing my head to song after song! I begged him for a copy, forreal just as my own gem. He wouldn’t bc he knew what they had! Thankfully the album came out a year later, I got to hear it again and again and again Xs a million! And they should’ve got 5 mics in The Source.
Man, I will never ever forget 2001-2002 i was a senior @ Broughton High in Raleigh, I get home from school turn the TV on and I see " you hear first" on MTV and Kurt loader was talking about 9th, phonte and Pooh. I couldn't wait to get to school to tell my ppls about Little Brother. It was a big deal to me because they were here...like HERE HERE! As God is my witness, a few months later I walk down the street to Laural Hills park to play ball and their they were playing on the court! I balled out and the thing that stood out the most was 1). 9th can real hoop..D1 type talent. 2) he kept saying " he and 1 yal gotta pick him up early" 3). 9th had on some Flightposite III PE. 🔥🔥🔥💯
As a 17 old kids these dudes embodied everything that made me who I was and how I saw and listened to music still to this day!! The Listened is still my favorite work of art! I appreciate these dudes more than they even know.💯💪🏿💙🔥

I’m glad Little Brother represented NC in a time before J.Cole, DaBaby, Rapsody, Lute. I heard Lovin It when I was in middle school and I’ve been a fan since. Went to the Little Brother Block Party and it just felt amazing to be in that moment.

I got to see LB on my birthday weekend… three days before The Corona lockdown. When they broke up, I was so disappointed in thinking I’d never get to see one of my favorite groups live. I’m so fortunate to get to say I got to see them.
Also, mad props to Phonte for sharing his SA story. It’s so hard for men to open up about these things. This just makes me admire him even more.

I was a producer emcee while in college. I want to say that in my later 20s when y’all music came out, it was a breath of fresh air. I was getting my masters at the time. Your albums were amazing and like a rite of passage. Being from South Carolina and living in Maryland, I have always paid attention to the North Carolina, VA, DC, Philly connection in music and have always admired the influence.
One of the most heartfelt, real, human, creative documentary I've seen in a long time. The filming of it is solid, the perspectives, especially for those of us who've been on this musical journey, is truly relatable. Inspiring and motivational to tell our stories. Truthful, honest, and real. How LB has always been. Salute them dudes.

Little Brother was an intense movement in hip hop that will never be duplicated. The Minstrel Show was beyond perfection. If y’all not familiar w/ that Pharrell gangsta grillz, do yourself a favor and get familiar. Also that boy Median was COLD. Don’t get me started on the legacy of The Foreign Exchange. BIG salute to Phonte, Pooh & 9th for their offerings to the game. Y’all mean so much to this nga from the R. This is a beautiful story that had to be told exactly this way.🏴🏴
I'm shocked to learn that Minstrel Show was poorly received -- It remains one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. I gorged on it during blizzards in northern Canada. You never know who's listening and who'll be moved by your work.

The Minstrel Show release was what finally convinced me that BET had completely lost its way. Instead of being a place to showcase all aspects and levels of Black artistry, it was purely about chasing the quick and easy check. I know at that point they were owned by Viacom and would never be what it was when they started. However, I thought that they still could have tried harder to make space for a wider array of artistry.

LB was the sound of my college years. I was a white kid growing up in ATL in the 90s, Dungeon Fam changed my life, I got to see both 'Kast & Goodie live in the late 90s. The summer before college I went to both the Spitkicker & Okayplayer tour shows and that shit was amazing. I caught The Listening early on and from then on it was my job to put on everyone I met to LB. I finally got a chance to see them live at A3C in '08. I love seeing how much success these guys have had and appreciate them so much for their impact on my life 🙏

I said it back then. Even though it was a great opportunity for 9th to work with Jay-Z. It also made his head extremely big. That collaboration was the beginning of the end of this group being a trio.
This is so nostalgic that it brings so much joy to my heart. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet Little Brother. I was one of the singers on Big Pooh album, the song called Jungle. Such dope artists.
Man this was such a dope beautiful doc...i wish 9th was able to be a part of it but it is what it is... still respect the work and I'm glad I was able to see them live at Art Basel 2019 in Miami just before Covid hit... it was such a dope show

One of, if not the most poignant documentaries of this year. A collage blending coming-of-age with goal-achieving endeavors, heartbreak, friendship, endship, uncertainty, reconnecting, and ultimately finding solace. The 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop deserves this doc.
This was a good documentary. Even though I saw it at the prescreening, it felt like it was my first time seeing it. When Phonte said “People still F with us after all this time” I said yeah man we do. I play ya music as if it came out yesterday. I play all Little Brother, Phonte and Big Pooh albums individually, I play Legacy’s album, Medians (You need to put The Sender album back on streaming );), Edgar Allen Flows album, as if it was yesterday. I really do enjoy the type of music LB and the Justus League has made. That’s the type of music I was interested in growing up, and LB and there people like Yahzarah hearing her on Sincere smooth, hearing her on The beginning, crazy. I even recall seeing her in a Erykah Badu video, can’t recall what video. Muhsinah on Something to behold, I find my self driving, singing her ending part of the song. Darien Brockington, he has song on some many LB records, I recall listening to his album and my favorite song was Think It over. I heard his vocals on Right On Time, I knew it was him. Like yo I can go on for days, but again, LB great documentary and I will always be a supporter of LB and The Justus League and all other artist adjacent to the group. LB BIZ
Median!!! I stumbled onto him as a kid at 13 when I found "Visionary" on Napster. Very much a talented emcee. This whole era of Justus League emcees is like one of hip hops greatest secret. I don't think these guys will ever truly understand how man kids grew with their brand of lyricism. I could cry thinking of how man songs came from these guys yet not enough ppl have heard their offerings. They'll always hold a very big place in my heart

I've been an LB fan since 2002. I saw them in New Orleans at HOB a week to the day before Katrina hit. I saw them again in ATL back in Nov 2019. I'm super amped to see this! #LBbizness

Seeing Pooh wit Kendrick and Soul was Eatth Shattering for a Fan of these artists of this caliber. Its like seeing John Lennon and Jimi Hendeix working on an album or footage in the studio together or just showing eachother love, for fans of them (which i am of both amd a Beatles Stan)
This documentary gave me the push to pursue this music stuff fully and whole heartedly. I have a unique sound and style complemented with my art I can’t lose!!!

Play any LB track. I can tell you where I was, who I was with, and how I felt the first time I heard it. I felt so guilty for downloading The Listening, I bought every Little Brother, Big Pooh, Phonte, Nicolay, Foreign Exchange album, single, feature they’ve ever released, because the music has always had such a meaningful impact. I would say that I see you. But it has always felt like you see me. Thank you.

This was so wholesome i had the biggest smile on my face throughout the whole documentary. The story of little brother is a life lesson, "no matter what you do in life, your gonna have to struggle to be great jus dont stop working, maturing, and growing." Little Brother changed my life. Looking out my window at the section 8 apartments we lived in started to look different. The void buildings became colorful. I felt something I never felt with music. I heard little brother and 9th wonder for the first time in 2003. I was 13. The music made Richmond, VA look like a new landscape with new opportunities.

When I tell you Little Brother changed my life it's an understatement. I am the ultimate hip hop head and they introduced me to so much more music it was overwhelming at times trying to keep up. 9th Wonder is not a villain; I understand everything they were talking about. 9th wonder has his own story probably. These 3 guys made me listen to more positive artists. And!!! Being yourself and embracing flaws was the only to be. Little brother taught me that. I am the only no. 1 fan of Little brother just ask my friends lol
So blessed to finally see LB at the Roots Picnic last year, highlight of the festival. These guys deserve all the flowers they receive.

Genuinely Top 5 Documentaries I have ever seen. I fucking love this group. Their trials and tribulations were so unknown to me when I was bumping them at 14 years old back in 07. Shit so crazy. I'm so happy Te and Pooh were able to reconcile. Little Brother Top 5 Artists of all time I'm calling it. Te top 20 rapper of all time. 9th Top 5 producers of all time. This movement Justus League to then have 9th turn it to Jamla which LB was not included in. Just insane.

It was like hearing Angels sing to me thru hip hop. Yall showed me you could have more than just soul, yall had SPIRIT in your music. Thank you for always keeping God as a theme in your music no matter what the game looked like. Te your story about the sexual abuse has brought tears to my eyes bruh. I wrote a poem about my testimony, that is so DOPE but I only performed it once lol. I pray God will give me the opportunity to make it a song one day to heal someone else. Blessings kings!

As a long time fan from 03 when i first heard "The Listening" and went on to consume anything justus league related, i want to thank you for providing the soundtrack to my life. There were songs i liked, and grew to love because i was living life and relating the lyrics. You guys make age appropriate rap/music and this documentary made even more of a fan, and i didnt think it was possible. When May the Lord Watch album came out, i was going through personal turmoil, but travelling overseas while listening to that album and the happiness i felt my favorite group had delivered in that fashion was so inspirational to me even professionally.THANK YOU!
