I bought automobile model kits like this for my son when he was a kid. He'd put them together all the time in his room. It fascinatined me. I was impressed. I still find it interesting. A great hobby! 🍓
Wow I really want to get into building models now. Before I just liked watching your videos, but now I want to do it myself and I think that these would make cool gifts!
Huge thanks for making this vid. I haven't built a model car in over 45 yrs and found an old complete 70 Roadrunner kit. This was very informative and I'm looking forward to using these tips.
Great video, as always. One thing I would add is to double check for other parts that need to be painted the same color as the body. When I first started out I kept forgetting pieces that needed to be painted the body color (mirrors, hoods, spoilers) so I would have to go back and drag my materials out. Not a huge deal, but it was always annoying when I did it.
I made a list with two different columns for all of the parts. One column for the different primer colors, and one column for the different paint colors. Worked out great. This way, like you said, I got all of the same colored primer parts painted at once, and all of the same colored paint parts colored at one time.
thanks a lot for your video , very clear, and a think very important : your english is very good and easy to understand for people who are not british.
I love watching these videos, they are so relaxing and entertaining. I used to do Hot Wheels "customs" (not anymore), so this eventually caught my interest. Maybe one day I'll try one of these models.
Do it! Jun’s videos got me into it during the pandemic and it’s a super fun, meditative, relaxing hobby. It can take a decent amount of money to get into if you want an airbrush, all the tools, a good amount of paint colors, etc, but you can start for relatively cheap and build up from there.
@@LOGEZZZZZBRO yeah that's the only thing I'm a little nervous about is the painting. As much as I actually love to paint with rattle cans and things, I'm hesitant to buy an air brush, if I can find a pre-painted kit like Aoshima makes I will absolutely give it a try
@@neongrey784 Prepainted would be an awesome starting point. Honestly using Tamiya spray paints for the body isn’t hard. I’d say the trickiest part is masking the body after painting to paint all the black window trims. It’s time consuming but also super rewarding when complete.

Came here from scale models (mostly ww2 planes) and miniature painting and...dear lord, the precision and patience are way up here. You guys are playing this hobby on hardmode. To have an understanding of differences: The clear finish for the airplane after priming Is 1200 at best; almost all paints are matte, you don't even need an airbrush for land vehicles and can hide any paint imperfections behind weathering; airplane canopies are small, and have raised parts, that helps with masking, no worries about making perfect windshield copy for the mask.
I am so glad i found your channel, you describe everything in so much detail that everyone can start building scale models and perfecting them ! Keep up the good work !
Such a great video! Thanks for sharing and explaining so easily. I would class myself as a semi-experienced modeler, and seeing how the panel line scribing looked, and the applying the proper before cleaning the mold lines. That's going to improve my models realism
Building model cars is so much fun. I started with a tamiya 280z kit, and im in the process of building an aoshima initial d fc rx7 kit. By no means is it perfect, but im already noticing a lot of improvement compared to the 280z
Thanks, I got a hasegawa kit of my aw11 mr2 as a gift and I have a lot of experience with gunpla but no experience with primer and painting besides on real cars. I only did color correction and panels lines and decals on gunpla. This is very cool
Interesting video, thanks for the share. Even though I have built a lot of model cars, I still want to take tips from this video and adapt them into my procedure. Well done 👍🏼
Jun you're my favorite youtuber, I'm always amazed by ur model kits. But what are some essentials for building models?????(I'll hopefully make plenty of model kits in the future)
Nice guides, seeing this pushes the motivation to start my own building. As a car enthusiast I got a few kits of cars I admire, I just never started yet as I fear to screw them up lol
That EG was the first higher end import i built! Use to Revell and Tamiya if never paid so much for a model! I had the real car in the 90’s and had to order it through Hobby town! It was $68,in 99’ i believe! I loved the kit, still have it and from there got really deep into collecting these kits! Got deep into RC 1:10 too! The. got into model 1:24 hydraulics, and lowrider, custom molding diecast and airbrushing graphics! If you have an IG i’d love to send you pictures of what i had! A bunch of Gundam from 97-2005 as well! Subbed!
Nice dude. I'm following your other video where you did the Honda RA272 and I've been taking my time. Sometimes a single part takes days as I make sure it's perfect. Probably why I dont build many models :-) I got my inspiration from that video.
Your videos are so good brother. Im going through my first (practice) build on a revell 69 camaro rs and i have these couple videos on repeat. Cant wait til im not a rookie and challenge myself with more detail. And uh... scribing is hard 😂
Don’t you just hate it when a piece is super small or slim (like the wipers you mentioned), but the gate to cut them off from is unnecessarily thicker than the piece itself
Great question. Sometimes I do wash them with soapy water if the parts feel greasy. And if you are only painting with acrylic paint without using primer, giving them a wash and light sanding will ensure better paint adhesion. If I am lazy(I mostly am)then I just wipe them clean with isopropyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol does a great job removing oil and grease.
The more I watch, the more I can see I've been doing it wrong. But I still enjoy it though. I think it's the glue that they sell you. It seems these guys don't use testors model glue do they?
I also build, you do need thin jaw sidies, because some parts are to damn close to those small plastic branches, or sticks, & there still a bit to thick, i'm only just getting them inbetween the part & branch, thats how close these parts are, i have to slide the jaw back to the tip, then cut, & these sidies cost me $90 & have another a bit thicker.
Quick question Jun, with priming, is it necessary if you car colour is similar to the plastic mold colour, I am making a tamiya evo 6 and am going to paint it white and the plastic is already white, do I still need to prime the body? Also I love the videos, not just these (they are really helpful) but all of your videos... 👍
I will still prime it white even though the plastic color and the final color are the same. If you just paint it white without primer/checking/cleaning mold lines, the imperfections will show through the paint. Priming does allow you to check for imperfections and provide better paint adhesion.
Hey Jun. You said the scribing pen is easier to use than the regular scribed. Does that mean I don’t have to invest in both tools and just invest in the scribing pen, instead of the regular scriber?
Scribing pen is easier to control for rounded and curved areas, it’s not as sharp so using it to scriber straight lines isn’t very effective. A regular scriber is great for straight lines, it’s thin and sharp. I recommend getting both, you will be using both of them very often.👍
I have a question jun i recently got 2 kits so i can practice first and try paints and stuff, but i wanted to ask if its needed to sand the car body first before the primer or i can do it like you did in the video since i have seen poeple do both but i dont know if it makes a lot of diference between the methods (both kit and paints are from tamiya). And thanks for these amazing quality videos it has been almost a year since i began to watch your content and finally decided to enter the hobby and im really enjoying it.
Do you sand the body of the car kit before spraying the surface primer? I sanded a little bit to make it coarse so that the surface primer would stick better to the car body. After that I spray painted with a color of choice. Then I put tamiya masking tape over the car body paint (after drying out for a week), I painted black for some detailing then removed the masking tape. It sadly took away part of the paint and primer. What is the fix for this? And how to prevent this from happening?
I did sand the body with 600-1000 grit before priming. Tamiya’s lacquer paint dries too a hard finish so ripping off paint rarely happens. If the masking tape ripped the paint off it might be too “strong” for plastic models. What masking tapes did you use? Try using Tamiya’s masking tapes. If the paint and primer had been removed then you might have to sand down the affected area and re prime and re paint.
Sanding is needed to remove production mold lines and flaws on the body. It also makes the shell rougher so the primer/paint will be able to bond to it more easily.👍
Oh no I have been there😂What paint did you use on the car and the window trims? You might be able to do some touch ups without having to removing the paint.

Always sand the body or parts so the paint/primer can stick better but be sure to use the right sandpaper
