That's good stuff I converted my three by eight to a one by 11 using the Shimano deore kit. Very easy install and I am very pleased with the range of shifting that I have probably won't ever go back to a 3x8 at this point. Thank you James the bike guy.
Just installed the cassette on my gravel bike, with tiagra. Upgrading 11-34T. Thank you, I was able to compare the weight. 35g, a bit under 10% increase.
I installed this set up (with an XT shifter, though 😎) in 2018. But I had been using 1x for four years prior. Watch videos from 2018 and they are all jumping on the 1x craze.
Fair warning i have the same set up with my m6000 sgs, had to buy a goatlink to fit the 11-46 cassette. You probably found a solution by now, mind telling me your take if you didn't get a goatlink.
I agree however I highly reccomend the Sram NX groupset over the Deore. Not much more cost but the 11 speed is a nice upgrade and the SRAM shifting is without a doubt better.
So i was wondering if 1 × 10 would be enough, since I'm considering pulling the trigger on a 2019 trek roscoe 6 that's been discounted by $200 at the bike shop. Wasn't sure if my fitness level was upto it.. Probably be more comfortable with the 1 × 11 on the roscoe 7, but its hard to overlook this deal..
My fat bike stock was running deore groupset m-6000 10 speed 11-42 cassete, 34t chainring, upgraded 30t wolf Tooth chainring , 11-46 10 speed cassette (shimano) , without changing rear derailleur, only adjusted B-tenssion bolt so it allows to shift easily on 46 cogs, the chain stays as long as it was before, i guess my derailleur is m-6000 SGS, so didn't need to upgrade to M-5120
Dunno what the others say, I installed it and am more than happy. Nice shifting, predictable shimano performance, quality was a positive surprise at this price level. Only, the clutch makes shifting rather heavy but I guess this is the case with most if not all clutch endowed derailleurs. Cannot see what is not to like. And I do not worry about hitting a rock or catching a stick. Cheap things are cheaply replaced.
i have a m6000 and a sunrace 42 cassette. Somehow the derailleur wont go to the lowest (42) gear. i have adjusted the highs and lows of the derailleur yet still no luck. any links on setting up a 11 to 42 10 speed drivetrain?
You will max out the b-tension if even possible. That will make the shifting in lower cogs terrible. Personally not worth it, just go to a smaller front ring if you need the climbing gear
@Jamesthebikeguy Bringing this back from the dead, was there a cable pull ratio change? What did they change it to? According to Shimano both are Dyna Sys 10spd. I'm asking because i'm planning to use an XT M780 shifter with an M6000 RD.
Cool! My 11-36T cassette is worn out on my 1x10. I'm planning to replace it with an 11-42T. Can you confirm that a goat link is not needed? Some say it does, some say it doesn't. I also have an M6000 rear derailleur. Thanks!
Pretty sure the 2020 Vitus Nucleus VRS comes equipped with both of these. I think they upgraded the cassette on the 2021 models though, perhaps this is why...
Unlikely to work well. Probably sold with a no-name cassette and questionable shift quality considering it would be out of the effective range of this derailleur.
I think it is silly of Shimano to make this 10 speed as there is 11 speed xt, the prices differences are not that huge, I think there is too much different models. For the consumer it would be nice if all of the components were the same apart from materials, as it would be easier to get spares. the slx shifts only 3 gears down the xt and xtr does 4, the xt shifters have different mounting to xtr. I think this is silly. but Sram can only shift one up and one down with triggers,m which sucks.
I disagree. It is all about ratios. A 34 in back and 20 (3x setup) can be beat by a 42 x 32. The bigger the difference, the better. The new 3x10 is great.
I imagine in some situations that the 3x10 drivetrain is the best solution. At least where I am riding that is not the case, but if Shimano is still producing it, they must be selling it.
Jamesthebikeguy : in fact, the new 2017 Deore has a 3x10 version. I can use both ends on my rides. There are open flats, and some crazy ridges and stairs
What would you suggest for a crankset to match these parts. I'm riding a Norco Storm 9.1 which is a 29er. I upgrade last year to Shimano M590 groupset. Shifting is slow, but I can take on hill like no tomorrow in 5th. Like less weight and a simple setup.

Sweet, worth the 35g for the extra gearing.
Does it work with 11-36?
I installed this set up (with an XT shifter, though 😎) in 2018. But I had been using 1x for four years prior. Watch videos from 2018 and they are all jumping on the 1x craze.
i'm planning to convert my bike to 1x setup. I ordered the m6000 sgs (long cage) with 11-42t. is it compatible with a 34t chainring?
About to buy the group set with a 11-46t cassette. Also a 1x crank set with a 34t oval chain ring as well as a new threaded BB. Conversion from 2x8
Fair warning i have the same set up with my m6000 sgs, had to buy a goatlink to fit the 11-46 cassette. You probably found a solution by now, mind telling me your take if you didn't get a goatlink.
I'm so tempted to going full 1x, but the nI remember the costs and prefer to save up a little bit more and get a full bike lmao
James I bought the M6000 with 11t to 42t. I came with an extension but not sure if I need it. Using a single 34t for the crank.
I have 11-42T with 1x 30T front. Should I get the GS or SGS derailleur cage?
GS if you don't ever plan to run a front derailleur
@@Jamesthebikeguy it's 10-42T rear i made a mistake. 30T front or possible 34T. So, GS?
Good job Shimano! An 11-42 10spd cassette is all that most causal riders need, especially at the price.
I agree however I highly reccomend the Sram NX groupset over the Deore. Not much more cost but the 11 speed is a nice upgrade and the SRAM shifting is without a doubt better.
Can this setup be used for converting a mountain to ride in the city and trails? Guess a 28T on a 29er would work?

did yours come with a 1mm spacer? I thought they were included in shimano cassettes but mine didnt have one. seems it's my issues at the moment
What order groupset for fee or free shipping to Philippines (international) plus tax or what?
Will Deore M6000 SGS derailleur work with 42t cassette in 1x10 configuration?
Pls help. What RD i will use for. 34t chain ring 11-42t cassette. GS or SGS?
is the rear Derailleur Cable Arm - Aluminium ? or Stamped steel ?

It sure does work well. Wish it was 11 speed, but I guess that is what SLX is for, lol.

Sounds like the B-tension needs to be adjusted.
Also my problem...
Max out the B screw and if it's not enough buy a derailleur extension.
Where is the thumb operated cable adjuster? I bought the same derailleur and it doesnt have it.
On the shifter
Is a long or medium cage needed to run the 11-42 cassette?
If you run a 1x front ring it does not matter, the parralelogram of the derailleur is the same on both. If you run 2x or 3x you need the long cage.
Alex S. the medium cage is the only one that works with the 42T cassette. check this information in the shimano Web site. big hug!
I have 30T front. Single chainring. 11-42T behind. SGS or GS cage?
I have m6000 long cage. Currently its at 11-42t. Can i use 11-50t and do i need goat link? Tyre size is 27.5...
Im rinding on cannondale trail 6 bike
Sir what is the full capacity if i have a 3x10 set up? How many teeth do it need?
Sir it is possible to used 11-46t cogs without using goatlink..in m6000 rd.?.
You will max out the b-tension if even possible. That will make the shifting in lower cogs terrible. Personally not worth it, just go to a smaller front ring if you need the climbing gear
So I was watching and was wondering does the shift cable need housing or is it meant to be exposed
Depends on the routing of the bike.
Jamesthebikeguy hahaha u suc what a joey
Great video!
Im planning to upgrade to 10s my Rd is m615 and my shifter is m6000 is this compatible?
I don't believe so, I think the m6000 uses the updated cable pull ratio.
@Jamesthebikeguy

Yes. Try to ask CRC.
My front crank is 32T cog is 11-42T rd is m615 gs medium cage
Hi James, I'm new the MTB and was wondering how you converted this groupset to 1X if Shimano only offers the cranks in 2X or 3X? Thanks!
Use other crank brand like Prowheel or the famous Chinese brand ZTTO or IXF.
hi, what derailleur are you using? GS or SGS
Depends on the situation
Could I use on a 7 rear speed bike with shims I trigger shifters?
I don't think so.
can you think that it is double less that what you eat everyday that's pretty light.
I guess
Is that an 11-42 cassette?
Sure is.

@@Travelakad It's perfectly fine, no need to use a goatlink for an 11-42T.
Can anyone recommend a good size of front chain ring for a 42 tooth cassette? Cheers
Flat 34t, some hills 32t, hilly 30t
Jamesthebikeguy thanks mate, went 32
Hi James. Can i use deore m6000 hub with tiagra 4700 derailleur? Or road only use road hubs only?
Tiagra is 10 speed so the cassette would fit fine on a deore hub.
Jamesthebikeguy
Thank you sifuu..
Did you use the M6000 crank? How did you convert it to a 1x?
No, using a Raceface Aeffect Crankset.
How mush?
Check with your local bike shop
Can the m6000 run with a sunrace 11-46 10v?
You can try but it will require significant b-screw adjustment and may mess us the shifting towards the 11-tooth side of the cassette.
Jamesthebikeguy thanks
Pretty sure the 2020 Vitus Nucleus VRS comes equipped with both of these. I think they upgraded the cassette on the 2021 models though, perhaps this is why...
seen this sold with a 11-50T, would it work?
Unlikely to work well. Probably sold with a no-name cassette and questionable shift quality considering it would be out of the effective range of this derailleur.
Has anyone tried pairing Shimano road shifter (4700, 5700, or 6700) with Shimano Deore M6000 rear derailleur and wide range cassette?
It wont work, the shifters and derailleur do not have a compatible pull ratio.
looks like the zee GS
I agree, it likely shares much of the design with the Zee.

The Raceface aeffect is always a great choice.
i have a 1x9 speed and a 1x10 speed
i find the 1x10 cassette too HEAVY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is laughable.
